A rash of stabbings, shootings and other violent incidents involving students in Russian schools has spread across the country in recent weeks.

Militarization, war propaganda and normalization of violence

Psychologists say that the surge in school violence is linked to the broader normalization of force in Russian society amid the war in Ukraine.

“Militaristic discourse is becoming more and more popular, more and more imposed,” Lapshin said.

He noted that war is framed not only as heroic but also as a legitimate way to resolve conflicts.

“Authoritative adults talk about it and invite children to play it as if it were an interesting game. War is presented as something just — we are defending our values and honor. At the same time, there is this underlying message: people solve their problems by going to war,” he said.

Alexandra Ivanova, a clinical psychologist working with adolescents, said exposure to narratives like this, combined with what she described as a perceived lack of accountability for violence, can distort how teenagers process conflict.

Throughout the war in Ukraine, Russian media have reported cases of men returning from the front, committing violent crimes and avoiding prison by re-enlisting.

Military servicemen, including Wagner mercenaries, have also regularly visited school classrooms to speak to students since the start of the war.

“When violence is normalized in society — and it is being normalized now — plus the absence of punishment, which they also see and hear about, these people who come back from the war and what they are allowed to do without consequences — then teenagers don’t have an adequate picture of reality,” she said.

While a Wagner mercenary might not necessarily become a role model to students in a direct sense, his visit amid the wider school militarization signals to students that this is normal, she said.

Pavel Talankin, a former school videographer in the Chelyabinsk region, said he witnessed a major shift toward military and patriotic-themed lessons at his school soon after the invasion in 2022.

“We started receiving prepared lesson plans, presentations and video materials. There was a lot about the war,” he told The Moscow Times.

Talankin's film “Mr. Nobody Against Putin,” which documents the militarization of Russian schools during the war, won the 2026 Academy Award for best documentary feature.

He said his school was instructed to broadcast slides and hold mandatory patriotic classes. While formally labeled “additional education,” refusal was often not an option in practice.

He also noted the growing presence of weapons in schools during visits by military personnel.

“Military personnel come in, show grenades, show real weapons and teach [students] how to use them,” Talankin said. “They show them where to put the bullets, how to disassemble and assemble the rifle, how to clean it, and explain which weapons are more effective and which are less effective.”

“There is a lot of war in society,” Lapshin said. “And if there is a lot of it in society, there will be a lot of it in people’s heads.”

Talankin argued that the impact is less about direct imitation and more about desensitization.

“When children are given very aggressive information in a very aggressive form, that human life is worth nothing, children become angry,” he said.

Officials also appear to have anticipated the rise in school violence, Talankin said. After leaving Russia in 2024, he remained subscribed to his school’s mailing list. That September, he received new guidelines “on how to identify violent and terrorist tendencies in children.”

Weekend Update #178: Two Weeks Into The Russian Spring Offensive And The Ukrainians Have Gained Territory

Phillips P. OBrien
Mar 29, 2026

https://phillipspobrien.substack.com/p/weekend-update-178-two-weeks-in
to

Starting around March 17, there was a massive spike in Russian ground attacks in Ukraine. According to General Syrskyi, in four days near the start of the offensive, the Russians launched more than 600 different assaults across the front.

When the Russians attacked this year, they ran into very well-prepared Ukrainian defenses. There were minefields, fortifications, and a growing and increasingly effective Ukrainian defensive drone wall.

Many factors seem to be interacting in the stopping of the Russian offensive. One thing that is getting more and more mention is the decreasing quality of the Russian soldier. This should not be surprising (I would have expected it to have happened sooner) but the enormous losses that the Russians have suffered, and their insatiable need to send more and more forces into the attack, seem to be reaching a point of diminishing returns.

Even in a closely guarded society such as Russia, news of the massive casualties, miserable conditions in the army, and poor training has been circulating. To actually raise soldiers, the Russians have to rely increasingly on those who have no other option and probably understand that they are signing up for close to certain death or serious disability. And those soldiers the Russians do raise seem barely trained. There were reports in the last week that the amount of training that Russian soldiers are getting before being sent to the front is down to one week.

And after their extremely quick training, these soldiers are sent forward quickly to make bloody assaults for little/no gain. The tactics are resulting in such high losses and low morale that the extremely nationalistic Russian milblogger community is now regularly bemoaning the present state of the Russian army. Btw, the casualty rates the Russians are suffering make this all plausible. While the week before saw two higher days, Russian casualties over the past week averaged comfortably over 1000 per day.

Here is the daily reported breakdown of Russian personnel losses as judged by the Ukrainians:

• March 28: 1,300 casualties

• March 27: 1,000 casualties

• March 26: 1,210 casualties

• March 25: 1,220 casualties

• March 24: 890 casualties

• March 23: 970 casualties

• March 22: 940 casualties

The issue with poorer quality soldiers getting less training, is that once a ship heads in that direction it is very hard to turn it around. The losses and frustrations on the battlefield will continue to be a disincentive (to put it mildly) dissuading those from serving, and that means those men that somehow end up in the Russian army will be needed at the front sooner and sooner—which means they will get even more degraded training. You can see the vicious cycle developing.

Btw, this was one of the reasons those who for two years were clamoring for Ukraine to draft more unwilling people for the army and send them to the front were being so dangerous. Compelling unmotivated soldiers to serve in such a horrible battle area could make things worse. It is far better to reform the military you have (the Ukrainian military was/is in need of reform) and adjust to the technological realities of the battlefield than generate soldiers through force and send them to the front. Here is a piece from late 2025 which tried to walk readers through just this dilemma. The Russians decided to throw troops at the question, the Ukrainians have tried to adapt.

Ukraine's defence minister: Every day we have frontline footage of Russians killing themselves after being hit by drones

By Roman Petrenko — 29 March, 15:53

"Secondly, the Russian military leadership forbids soldiers from surrendering. Their propaganda says it is better to die immediately, even though after being taken captive, a soldier has every chance of being exchanged – exchanges take place regularly between the parties. But Russia takes away its citizens' right to life."

Ukraine’s last friend in the Trump regime just walked away

Marco Rubio was supposed to be the exception—the adult in the room who understood how dangerous Putin is. But Marco has changed his mind. Ukraine and Europe should take note—because the guardrails are gone.

By Michael Andersen** | March 30, 2026

https://euromaidanpress.com/2026/03/30/ukraines-last-friend-in-the-tru
mp-regime-just-walked-away
/

In a Trump administration crowded with opportunists and MAGA cranks, Marco Rubio was meant to represent the last trace of old Republican foreign policy seriousness: alliances matter, dictators must be resisted, aggression must be punished. If there was one man expected to understand what Russia's war against Ukraine actually means, it was him.

That illusion has now collapsed. Ukraine and Europe better pay attention.

Rubio's public broadside against Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday was not a spur-of-the-moment outburst. It was a signal flare. When the US Secretary of State accuses Ukraine's president of lying and casually suggests American weapons could be diverted to the Middle East, he is not freelancing. He is announcing a new reality: in Trump's Washington, Ukraine is no longer a cause to be defended. It is a problem to be managed.

That matters because Rubio was never supposed to be this guy.

He built his political brand on confronting authoritarians, defending American alliances, and speaking clearly about Russian aggression. He was not an isolationist or a Tucker Carlson-style apologist. He was part of a Republican tradition that claimed to believe power should deter conquest. As recently as late 2025, NBC News reported that Rubio "sees Russia as the culprit for having launched an unprovoked invasion."

Now he sounds like a translator for Trump's worldview.

And Donald Trump's worldview has never had room for Ukraine. Trump does not think in terms of sovereignty, deterrence, or the moral and strategic cost of rewarding invasion. He thinks in terms of grievance, spectacle, and transactions. To him, Ukraine is not a frontline state resisting imperial violence. It is a nuisance. Zelenskyy is not a wartime leader. He is an annoying and dodgy skimmer of US taxpayers. The war is not a test of Western resolve. It is an annoying obstacle to "deals," headlines, and self-glorification. "Where is my Nobel Peace Prize?"

And now, even Marco Rubio has stopped resisting that worldview. Worse, he is now legitimizing it.

That is the real significance of his shift. It tells us how Trumpism works in power. It does not require every official to begin as a true believer. It only requires them to learn what cannot be said. And in Trump's White House, what cannot be said is that Ukraine is worth defending on its own terms—that its democracy and freedom are important.

So Rubio has adapted. His role is no longer to advocate for Ukraine or warn against Putin. His role is to dress up Trump's instincts in the language of statecraft. A year ago, he told reporters in Jeddah that Ukraine would have to make territorial concessions. By January 2026, he was telling senators that Donbas remained the central unresolved issue—framing Russia's demand for 5,000 square kilometers it never captured as a mere "gap to be bridged."

The consequences are enormous.

When Rubio suggests Ukraine's weapons could be sent elsewhere if Washington has "other priorities," he is saying something brutally simple: Ukraine has been demoted. Its survival is now contingent, negotiable, subordinate to whatever captures Trump's attention this week. That is not strategy. That is abandonment with bureaucratic polish.

Europe should hear this clearly. The guardrails are gone.

For too long, many in Kyiv and across the West clung to the comforting fantasy that "serious people" inside a second Trump administration would prevent the worst. Rubio was central to that fantasy. His transformation should kill it. As far back as February 2025, the Oval Office confrontation with Zelenskyy showed where the administration was heading—and Rubio sat quietly as Trump froze all military aid days later.

The hard truth is now impossible to avoid: Trump's America is not preparing to secure a just peace. It is preparing to pressure the victim, flatter the aggressor, and call the result diplomacy.

Ukraine has not merely lost Donald Trump. That was obvious long ago.

Now it has lost the last man in the room who was supposed to know better.

Marco Rubio has folded. Europe needs to stop hoping Washington has any serious interest in saving Ukraine—and start acting like it understands what is coming.

Ukrainian drones hit a shell casing factory in occupied Alchevsk — Russia’s air defense was nowhere to be seen

The same night, Ukrainian drones struck Russia’s Taganrog in “the worst attack” on the city since the war began, a chemical plant in Tolyatti, and targeted Krasnodar.

The complete absence of any interception attempt is consistent with a pattern Ukraine has been deliberately building. In the first half of March alone, Ukrainian forces destroyed 27 Russian air defense assets — most across occupied territories — S-400 launchers, Tor and Pantsir systems, and multiple radar stations, including several in Luhansk Oblast specifically.

Kyiv’s experimental project turns businesses into Russian drone killers — Zala already taken out

Private units linked to Unified Air Force Command with the full integration into national defense.

In Ukraine, businesses are joining the effort to destroy Russian attack drones. Early results have already been reported in downing Shahed-type strike drones from the private sector, according to Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov.

This is part of a government-launched experimental project involving the private sector in Ukraine’s air defense system.

“One of the companies participating in the project has already prepared its own air defense team. To date, several enemy drones have been shot down in Kharkiv Oblast, including Shahed and Zala,” Fedorov said. [Zala drones: https://zala-aero.com/en/about/ ]

Ukraine enters a revolutionary era of private air defense

The minister added that new air defense teams are being formed simultaneously at 13 other enterprises that have received official status from the Ministry of Defense as authorized economic entities.

“At present, all groups are at different stages of training: some are already performing combat missions, others are undergoing instruction,” Fedorov emphasized.

Experimental military initiative reduces defense load

Fedorov explained that private air defense is integrated into the Unified Air Force Command System of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and is already operational, protecting facilities and participating in Shahed interception operations.

“This is a systemic solution that allows rapid scaling of air defense capabilities without adding extra burden on front-line units,” the minister claimed.

He noted that a model has been created in which the state, the military, and private business operate as a single coordinated system.

“We are opening the air defense market and creating competition: businesses can develop private air defense capabilities and protect their own infrastructure,” Fedorov said.

These private air defense units are armed, operate under Air Force coordination, and become part of the overall air protection architecture, enabling fast responses to attacks and rapid scaling of defensive capabilities.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine negotiated with Arab countries to export naval drones, which are deterring the Russian fleet in the Black Sea. The parties discussed the possibility of Ukraine assisting in unblocking the Strait of Hormuz.

A prominent Russian ultranationalist military and political commentator claimed that Western economic potential is “orders of magnitude” larger than Russia’s and is becoming militarily evident as “Western-backed” Ukrainian drone strikes against Russia have increasingly involved hundreds of drones.[1] The commentator claimed that the size of such strikes will only increase, and that Russia cannot produce enough interceptor missiles to compete with Western economic potential and is thus “doomed to defeat” and forced to immediately “solve the problem of ending the war.”

The Ukrainian in Hungary Who Has Europe’s Hardest Job

Ukraine’s ambassador to Hungary represents a government that has become Viktor Orbán’s primary target.

By Isaac Stanley-Becker

March 31, 2026, 9:09 AM ET

https://www.theatlantic.com/national-security/2026/03/europe-ukraine-a
mbassador-hungary-orban/686617
/

It’s not easy being Fedir Shandor, the Ukrainian ambassador to Hungary. His host country is holding elections next month, and the prime minister, Viktor Orbán, has made his whole campaign about Ukraine. Specifically, Orbán is asking voters to believe that Hungary risks becoming a Ukrainian colony, and that he’s the only person standing in the way of Volodymyr Zelensky drafting them into the fight against Russia.

That might sound far-fetched, but Hungary occupies an awkward position as the most reliable Russian ally inside Europe. Its election is making things weirder and more sinister: Orbán’s government has tried to paint the main domestic opposition party as a Ukrainian front, accusing Kyiv of carrying out a hostile operation designed to depose Hungary’s leader.

So when the ambassador agreed to meet with me over the weekend, at a pastry shop on the outskirts of Budapest, I expected him to disguise himself in some way, or perhaps to talk in hushed tones and skirt sensitive topics. I was not prepared for the tank of a man who came careening into the shop’s sunroom—waving his arms, ripping off his hat, and speaking about 12 decibels louder than anyone else. His bearing is that of a bouncer, except for the traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt.

“Do you feel safe here?” I asked Shandor when we sat down. He is a favorite boogeyman of pro-government media, and he has been summoned to the foreign ministry for so many dressings-down that he says he has earned a place in the Guinness World Records. “Yes!” he replied immediately. “It’s no problem, no problem.” The reason for the absence of a problem is simple. “I am a sergeant,” he explained.

When you’ve actually gone to battle, as Shandor has, information warfare isn’t so daunting. Just outside the window from where we were speaking, Zelensky glowered from an Orbán campaign poster styled like a “Wanted” notice. “Yeah, it’s my president, very popular,” the ambassador said, slouching in his chair with his hands clasped over his stomach. “Maybe next election, he’ll be the president in Hungary.”

He sat upright and elbowed me. “It’s a joke,” he said.

The Russian system for recruiting new soldiers is malfunctioning. Putin has to get clever to find new soldiers. The Army will make soldiers from the five worst employees at businesses with fewer than 501 employees. The boss now has an easy way to rid himself of crappy employees: send them to die in Ukraine! The boss looks patriotic to Russia rather than vindictive toward the bad worker.

Russian authorities are increasingly turning to forced covert mobilization efforts as Russian forces suffer unsustainably high losses on the battlefield and Russian recruitment rates decline. Ryazan Oblast Governor Pavel Malkov signed a decree on March 20 requiring medium and large businesses in Ryazan Oblast to select employees to sign contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD), and the law will be in effect until at least September 20, 2026.[19] The decree requires businesses with between 150 and 500 employees to select two to five employees to sign contracts, depending on the size of the business. The decree uses several federal decrees that Russian President Vladimir Putin signed in October 2022 as a justification for these requirements. The March 20 decree is a continuation of Russian covert mobilization efforts that aim to avoid conducting another involuntary call-up of Russian men while continuing to generate manpower for the frontlines in Ukraine.[20] The Kremlin is setting conditions to deflect blame for this latest forced covert mobilization effort by making medium and large businesses responsible for selecting employees to sign contracts. Forcibly mobilized employees are likely to direct their ire at the businesses that selected them or the governor who issued the decree, though the Kremlin is ultimately responsible for the Russian forces’ unsustainable casualty rate in Ukraine that is necessitating this new covert mobilization effort. The Russian recruitment rate fell below its casualty rate for the first time since 2022 in January 2026, and the Russian MoD appears to be struggling to find new force generation mechanisms and target new populations, as their previous mechanism of offering high one-time signing bonuses to volunteers has declined in effectiveness in late 2025.[21] The Kremlin is likely to continue to pursue regional covert and rolling mobilization efforts that fall short of a large-scale involuntary call-up to make up for its losses in Ukraine.[22]

Ukraine’s $1,200 drone is getting an upgrade: swarm mode

Ukraine is pushing interceptor drone development into its next phase: swarms, according to Business Insider. Brave1, the Ukrainian government-backed body that channels and accelerates defense innovation, told the outlet that several companies in its cluster are actively developing swarm capability for interceptor drones — a weapon system that has become one of Kyiv's top defense priorities over the past year.

The technology under development would enable two distinct functions: allowing a single operator to control multiple interceptor drones simultaneously, both locally and remotely; and enabling drones to communicate with each other autonomously during flight. Brave1 said the first of these two scenarios is closer to scaled combat deployment.

A mechanized attack by Ukraine's 425th Assault Regiment — better known as Skelia — outside Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast has sparked a wave of criticism from key Ukrainian figures online concerning the unnecessary loss of manpower in reckless assaults.

On April 1, Serhii Sternenko — one of the most prominent Ukrainian volunteers providing support to the military and recently named advisor to newly-appointed Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov — spoke out about the failed attack the previous night, sharing Russian drone videos of the destroyed equipment that had been posted on Telegram.

The original video, posted by Russia's elite Rubicon drone unit, shows their drones destroying a Ukrainian M1 Abrams tank, a BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle, and a M1117 armored mobility vehicle, as well as several hits on individual soldiers in the field.

Later in the day, more footage of the destroyed vehicles emerged online, quickly geolocated to confirm the attack occurred on the E-50 highway running west from Pokrovsk, near the village of Hryshyne, now contested.

Skelia's tactics in this attack, Sternenko said, were just the latest example of a systemically wasteful approach to offensive operations in the unit — among other assault regiments — that leads to excess Ukrainian personnel losses, often for little to no tangible gains.

"Treating our people like this is a crime, and there must be accountability for this," the volunteer and advisor wrote.

"What they are doing to people in certain formations is no better than Russian practices. This must end."

Skelia's response concluded with a personal challenge to Sternenko himself.

"If Mr. Sternenko knows how to organize assault actions against the enemy's strongholds in Pokrovsk," the post read, "we are ready to give him, like all Ukrainian men and women who have not yet been mobilized, the opportunity to apply his experience in practice as part of our unit and take a direct part in the defense of the motherland."

The post was reshared by the official account of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, hinting at tension between the high command in the military and the new defense ministry leadership, which announced an audit of battlefield losses on March 2.

Since Russia's full-scale invasion, Sternenko has become one of Ukrainian society's most trusted thought leaders on matters regarding the war, often not holding back in his criticism of systemic issues in the country's military leadership. "We are headed toward a disaster of strategic magnitude, which could lead to the loss of statehood." https://kyivindependent.com/our-defense-is-falling-apart-prominent-ukr

A Ukrainian M-1 Tank Led An Assault Group On A Suicide Mission

The 425th Assault Regiment troopers were 'easy targets' for Russian drones

Apr 01, 2026

The Russians aren’t the only ones sending mechanized assault groups to get massacred in the miles-wide drone kill zone that straddles the contested gray zone threading 700 miles through northern, eastern and southern Ukraine.

On March 31, the Ukrainian 425th Assault “Rock” Regiment, supported by the 155th Mechanized Brigade, mustered an assault group with a M-1 tank and four BMP fighting vehicles—and sent it rolling along a notorious road of death between the front-line village of Hryshyne and the Russian-occupied ruins of Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine.

Commanders hoped foggy weather would hide the column from Russian drones. It didn’t. Fiber-optic first-person-view drones from Russia’s elite Rubicon Center barreled in, damaging or destroying several vehicles including the M-1 and killing as many as a dozen Ukrainians.

Ukrainian observers were horrified. “We often laugh at the enemy when he sends his troops in columns to storm our positions,” wrote Serhii Sternenko, a fundraiser and advisor to the Ukrainian defense ministry. “Under conditions of total drone dominance, columns become easy targets, and the enemy suffers heavy losses. And he keeps doing it again and again. But what about Ukrainian commanders who do the same thing?

In March, Russian forces suffered their highest personnel losses since the start of 2026 — 31,960 troops, according to analyst Oleksandr Kovalenko. These losses largely resulted from the launch of the spring–summer offensive campaign in Ukraine.

“This is not a record level of losses, but it is still very high, even compared to average figures from last year, especially in relation to territorial gains,” the expert notes.

In March, Russian forces captured 155 km² of Ukrainian territory — one of the lowest figures compared to the first half of 2025.

For comparison, during last year’s summer offensive, Russian troops advanced at an average rate of 130–150 km² per week. In other words, the pace has slowed nearly fourfold.

For comparison, during the 2025 spring-summer campaign, the ratios were:
• April — 36,260 losses over 186 km2 (194 per km2)
• May — 35,370 over 440 km2 (80 per km2)
• June — 32,420 over 497 km2 (65 per km2)
• July — 33,220 over 537 km2 (61 per km2)
• August — 27,940 over 467 km2 (59 per km2)

Russia’s Grinding War in Ukraine

Massive Losses and Tiny Gains

Brief by Seth G. Jones and Riley McCabe | January 27, 2026

"Despite Russian challenges, the great irony is that the United States and Europe have failed to fully wield the economic or military cudgels. Without greater pain, Putin will drag the talks out and keep fighting — even if it means millions of Russian and Ukrainian casualties."

Russia's military campaign in Ukraine stalls for the first time in more than two years

Russia’s advance in Ukraine stalled in March, with no territorial gains for the first time in over two years, according to the Institute for the Study of War. Ukrainian forces recaptured small areas, signalling a slowdown in Moscow’s momentum after months of progress, raising new questions about the war’s next phase.

In 2025, the Russian army made more progress in Ukraine than in the preceding 24 months. But in the first three months of 2026, Russian territorial gains were half those of the same period in 2025.

Four years after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Moscow occupies just over 19 percent of the country, the majority of which was seized during the first weeks of the conflict.

Approximately seven percent, including Crimea and areas in the Donbas region, was already under Russian or pro-Russian separatist control before the invasion.

MOSCOW, April 3 (Reuters) - Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia's powerful Security Council, said on Friday that Moscow should drop its "tolerant attitude" towards Ukraine's possible EU membership.

"The EU is no longer just an economic union. It can transform, and rather quickly, into a full-blown military alliance, one overtly hostile to Russia, and in some ways worse than NATO," Medvedev said.

"It’s time to drop the tolerant attitude toward our neighbors joining what is now a military-economic European Union."

Medvedev said that he did not believe the United States would leave the NATO military alliance but that Washington could make symbolic moves such as cutting the number of U.S. troops deployed to other NATO members.

Medvedev said, though, that the obvious divisions within NATO could push the EU towards becoming more than simply an economic union.

New Ukrainian Jammer Makes Russia’s Latest Glide Bombs Useless (Temporarily Again)

By David Hambling | Apr 03, 2026, 09:13 am EDT

Guided glide bombs or KABs have been one of Russia’s most dangerous weapons. Launched from jets 30 miles or more behind the lines to avoid air defenses, they inflict massive damage on Ukrainian cities and frontline positions alike, with more than 5,700 dopped in one month.

Countering them is a major challenge. A RAND piece from 2024 notes that jamming might be feasible but that “In warfare, silver bullets are rare.” In 2024 Ukraine could effectively counter the bombs with jammers, causing them to miss their targets, but new Russian receivers nullified the jamming and bombardment resumed. Now Ukraine is deploying an upgraded jammer that overcomes even the best Russian technology.

“The effectiveness of KABs dropped to zero,” a spokesman for the developers of the Lima-Quant system told me. “On a roughly 700 km stretch of the front, the enemy dropped 869 KABs in one of the previous months. The consequences of these strikes were minor injuries to eight servicemen.”

These are the same developers responsible for the earlier Lima system claimed to be responsible for diverting Kinzhal missiles into empty fields. Like Lima, the upgraded Lima Quant was developed with the Night Watch unit rather than central government or military organization. But the challenges involved in fielding it have been as much political as technical.

The Guided Bomb Threat

The KAB (“Korrektiruyemaya Aviatsionnaya Bomba “ or "Adjustable Aircraft Bomb") series is the direct Russian equivalent of the U.S. JDAM (“Joint Direct Attack Munition”) series. It upgrades a dumb, unguided bomb with steering fins and satellite guidance enabling it to hit a pre-programmed location on the map. Under good conditions accuracy is better than 20 meters, enough to hit a specific building.

Folding wings give the bombs an extended range. Some advanced versions have a claimed range of 120 miles, though most are more like 40 miles. This is much less than the 1,000+ mile range of the Shahed, but while Shaheds have a warhead of 100 or 200 pounds, KABs span a range from 500 and 1,000 pounds all the way up to block-busting 3,000-pound KAB-1500 which leaves a crater 50 feet across. They are used as super-heavy artillery to destroy Ukrainian bunkers and fighting positions, and to attack civilian infrastructure.

These glide bombs fly at hundreds of miles per hour and are extremely difficult to shoot down. But they do have an Achilles Heel, and in 2024 many were being jammed causing the navigation to fail so they missed their targets.

“The effectiveness of KABs depends directly on their guidance system,” says the spokesman. “Previously they used the Kometa-4 CRPA, and later—after Ukraine expanded its Electronic-Warfare (EW) system—Kometa-8.”

The CRPA or Controlled Reception Pattern Antenna or CRPA, pronounced “serper,” is also called an adaptive antenna, null-steering antenna or beamforming antenna. It uses multiple antenna elements and combines their signals in smart ways. One is addition: adding two signals together to boost the amplification. But it can also be used for subtraction. By shifting the phase of a signal when it is combined, a CRPA selectively removes that signal from the output, effectively tuning it out. This is similar to how noise-cancelling headphones selectively block out sounds.

This technique requires an additional antenna element to generate each null. The Kometa-4 had four elements, meaning it could generate three nulls and so cancel out three jammers. Kometa-8 with 8 elements could work against up to 7 jammers.

The same Kometa guidance systems are found in Shahed drones and other Russian weapons including the Kinzhal hypersonic missile. All are vulnerable to a sufficient volume of jamming. But the Russians kept increasing the number of elements to 12 and even 16. More importantly they changed the way their antenna arrays worked.

“The Russians developed a fundamentally new series of CRPAs,” says the spokesman. “We compare their creation to the development of the Enigma in World War II. These CRPAs are capable of resisting a level of jamming that significantly exceeds the number of their antenna elements.”

A new Russian 8-element system required 19 jammers to counter. The 16-element version could not be countered even with 104 jammers. And when jamming did work, it was only effective at short ranges -- “from tens of kilometers to hundreds of meters.”

The new CRPA technology meant that Russian KABs were again effective – until the development of the Lima-Quant system. Details remain secret, but the claimed effects are dramatic.

Jamming -- And Interference

“The KABs either did not hit or they could not even be released, because the guidance system produced a navigation error,” says the spokesman. “Russian pilots did not understand what was happening, because navigation on these CRPAs was lost 100 km before the line of combat. A similar situation occurred with Shahed drones. Objects protected by Lima EW could not be struck.”

Jamming does not distinguish friend from foe, though, and the system affects Ukrainian satellite navigation too.

“Brigade commanders conducting combat operations began imposing bans on EW operation, arguing that their Mavic drones and bombers could not carry out missions,” says the spokesman. “These bans are our main problem right now.”

The spokesman says the problem could be solved by modifying the Ukrainian drones, and blames local commanders for not wanting to invest the time, money and effort requires. They would rather lower the jamming shield at intervals and risk the consequences. There was also another problem from the Lima developers

“Competitors, unhappy with the extremely rapid pace of Lima deployment, began making unfounded complaints to law enforcement,” says the spokesman, and they were embroiled in a corruption investigation. “The work of the team and the manufacturer was suspended for more than half a year, which led to significant losses.”

Accusations of corruption (and actual corruption) are unfortunately common in the Ukrainian defense sector.

The various types of interference have not prevented Lima-Quant being deployed and the makers claim it is uniquely effective, with no other EW system able to counter the new Russian Kometas.

“Today, Lima Quant is the only system in the world capable of suppressing these CRPAs at a distance of 50 km; KABs at distances of more than 100 km; and cruise and ballistic missiles at even greater distances,” says the spokesman.

As well as glide bombs, he claims the system has been responsible for blocking Russia’s Kinzhal missiles – “Of 42 missiles launched, we managed to neutralize 41—most of them by breaking them apart in the air without detonation.”

The Game Of Cat And Mouse Continues

Claims about superweapons and silver bullets should always be regarded with caution, especially in the absence of any technical details. But an officer of the Night Watch was able to confirm the essential details of the Lima-Quant, adding:

“When implemented on a sufficiently large scale and coordinated across operational sectors, these systems can dramatically limit the ability of guided bombs and UAVs to strike intended targets.”

In 2025, Ukrainian officials confirmed that they were starting to counter Russian glide bombs with electronic warfare systems and said these were being extended, but gave no details.

Russian sources also note that some weapons have become inaccurate, complaining that Iskander ballistic missiles are missing by a kilometer.

Electronic warfare is a never-ending arms race. When one sides develops a better jammer, the other develops a counter-jamming receiver., and any advantage is temporary. If the developers are correct, Lima-Quant at present provide welcome respite from some of Russia’s deadliest weapons.

Russia drops record number of deadly glide bombs on Ukraine, steps up aerial attacks

In March, Russia dropped the largest number of aerial guided bombs (or glide bombs) on Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry reported on April 3.

Russian forces launched 7,987 glide bombs last month — over 1,500 more than the previous record in February. Russian forces also carried out 115,000 artillery attacks, including 2,834 multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS).

"Having failed to achieve the desired successes at the front, the Russian army is trying to apply pressure by increasing the number of airstrikes," the Defense Ministry said.

Guided aerial bombs, while having a shorter range than missiles, are cheaper to produce. They are launched from aircraft behind the front lines within Russian territory or Russian-occupied territories — beyond the reach of Ukrainian air defense.

They are nearly impossible to shoot down due to their heavy iron construction and their tendency to approach at extremely fast speeds, and from high altitudes, unlike cruise missiles or drones, according to experts.

But Ukraine has been able to deploy jammers that divert the bombs away from their targets. In the war’s typical cat-and-mouse game, Russia upgraded the weapon to overcome jammers last year, pushing Ukraine to develop a new jammer this year.

But it's not just glide bomb attacks that have increased. Russia also launched a record 1,000 drones over a 24-hour period on March 23-24, including a rare mass attack during daytime, killing 7 and injuring around 50.

In total, Russia launched nearly 6,500 drones in March. And there are no signs that Moscow intends to slow down, particularly as U.S.-brokered peace negotiations take a backseat following the outbreak of the American-Israeli war on Iran.
