It is completely predictable that Russians would be POOR compared to EU citizens since Russians can't trust other Russians to not kill them when convenient. To grow wealthy requires citizens to trust that fellow citizens won't murder them.

Unlike the US in all wars of the 20th and 21st centuries, Russia does NOT keep a list of every soldier who dies because Russia does NOT give a damn how many millions of its citizens die. Back in 1990, Russia had killed 62 million of its own citizens as proof Russia does NOT care who dies.

Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has spurred NATO members to plan in detail what has been unthinkable since the end of the Cold War — a direct conflict with Russia.

However, ahead of the bloc's summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, starting on July 11 when countering Russia will be top of the agenda, Sir Richard Shirreff, the former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, said NATO was not ready for a war with Moscow.

"It needs a real kick up the backside," he told Newsweek, as he took aim at dwindling military budgets across alliance members, although there are exceptions, such as Poland.

"There is a massive war going on in Eastern Europe. It's a land war and it's an air war, and so you need to invest in air and land, and that hasn't been done," Shirreff said. "Last year at its Madrid summit, (Alliance Secretary General) Jens Stoltenberg announced that NATO would ramp up its very high readiness forces to 300,000 — that simply hasn't happened."

The former British general said that the U.K. Army was an example of such cuts across the bloc being run down to a "ludicrous size" as he believed that the defense establishment had believed that China, not Russia, was the major long-term threat.

"Geography matters here and Russia is the wolf nearest the sledge," said Shirreff, the managing partner at the consultancy Strategia Worldwide. He believed there has been a "failure of deterrence" by the alliance, which missed an opportunity to build up capability after Putin seized Crimea in 2014.

"Am I confident that NATO will really be able to generate conventional forces ready for a conventional war with Russia? No, I'm not."

Signym, Russia and North Korea both build nukes so that nobody outside the country can make those countries behave decently. Russia and North Korea also killed their own people by the millions so that nobody inside those countries can make those countries behave decently. What is the result? No decent person outside those countries trusts those countries. That lack of trust is why both countries are poor. Russia is less poor because it does have cheap oil and natural gas to export, but North Korea does not have that good fortune.

I am old enough to remember Civil Defense Bomb Shelters. A new poll shows dismal support for Putin’s use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine – a possibility Putin almost immediately reinforced he is considering.

The polling center – considered the most accurate for insights regarding the public reaction to the Kremlin’s increasingly autocratic governance – left open-ended the main question it posed to respondents, who are typically wary of publicly criticizing Putin’s regime.

“Some believe that in order to win in Ukraine Russia must use nuclear weapons, others believe that it is impossible to use nuclear weapons under any circumstances,” it posed, according to a translation. “And which of these points of view do you most adhere to?”

Putin himself, however, expressed on Friday that he remains undeterred by any opposition to the use of any weapons in his arsenals.

“The use of extreme means is possible if there is a threat to Russian statehood. And in this case, of course, we will use all the forces and means at the disposal of the Russian state,” Putin said at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in response to a question about nuclear weapons use.

And, predictably, he referenced that the U.S. is the only nuclear-armed country to have employed them in battle.

“Such a precedent has been created – created by the United States,” he said, according to a translation.

Western officials and analysts have fretted in recent months about whether to take seriously Putin’s increasingly aggressive nuclear saber-rattling. He has ordered the deployment of strategic nuclear weapons to Belarus, one of its sole remaining loyal post-Soviet allies and has engaged in other provocative behavior, such as deploying ships armed with hypersonic missiles – which U.S. analysts believe could carry a nuclear warhead – into the Atlantic.

Less catastrophic, but equally perilous for Ukraine, others fear that the mere threats of using nuclear weapons could amount to enough to force Kyiv’s allies in Europe to begin backing away from staunch support for its military, particularly as it escalates its spring offensive.

Other analysts tell U.S. News the possibility Putin would use nuclear weapons is remote, but not impossible.

“The likelihood of Russia choosing – or Putin choosing – to use nuclear weapons directly against the West is astronomically low. It should not even be seriously considered at this stage,” Katherine Lawlor, senior intelligence analyst at the independent Institute for the Study of War, which has fastidiously tracked Russia’s military movements since it first invaded Ukraine, said in February.

“Putin would love it if Western leaders believed that he might. He is many things, but he is not suicidal,” Lawlor said. She adds that Putin ultimately does not want war with NATO – particularly given the current state of the Russian army. “He couldn’t even win a conventional war in Ukraine.”

Lawlor adds these circumstances could change if Russia feels it is squarely in a defensive position and needs to prevent “all-out disaster” – a scenario with renewed significance in light of Ukraine’s offensive.

“You have to think about the human response to nuclear use,” she said, describing the effect on a Ukrainian soldier who witnesses a rising mushroom cloud several miles away toward the front lines. “The Russians may assume it would have a devastating effect on the morale of the surviving Ukrainian forces.”

If Putin was a useful man, he would not be following the path that Kim Jong Un of North Korea follows in making NK citizens poor compared to South Koreans. Instead, Putin would be following the Canadian path which made Canadian citizens richer than United States citizens. See below, where the median Canadian is richer than the median American. If Canada can do it, Russia could do it better, but Putin's path is definitely not helping Russian citizens.

Actually, we should be looking at modal income and modal wealth (i.e. where most people are,"typical"). If you were to plot (for example) number of people on the vertical axis against income on the horizontal axis, you would find at least one peak.

The typical family gets appx $20,000 in income.

A dam in Ukraine was designed to withstand almost any attack imaginable — from the outside. The evidence suggests Russia blew it up from within.

Deep inside the dam was an Achilles’ heel. And because the dam was built during Soviet times, Moscow had every page of the engineering drawings and knew where it was. The dam was built with an enormous concrete block as its foundation. A small passageway runs through it, reachable from the dam's machine room. It was in this passageway, the evidence suggests, that an explosive charge detonated and destroyed the dam. At 2:35 a.m on June 6, seismic sensors in Ukraine and Romania detected the telltale signs of large explosions. As the water levels further dropped this week, they fell below the top of the concrete foundation. The section that collapsed was not visible above the water line — strong evidence that the foundation had suffered structural damage, engineers said. In the chaotic aftermath, with each side blaming the other for the collapse, multiple explanations are theoretically possible. But the evidence clearly suggests the dam was crippled by an explosion set off by the side that controls it: Russia.

The US spends 3.5% of gdp on defense and Ukraine spends 34%

If you were spending 3.5% of your income on alcohol and drinking it all, it would seriously addle your brain and lower your income (cutting it in half or worse) because of hangovers. But if you poured the alcohol down the drain or gave it to friends who are alcoholics rather than drinking it yourself, your life would be almost unaffected by wasting 3.5% of your income. Every time the US spent 3.5% of gdp to send US troops overseas, the entire US got a hangover. See the Iraq War or the Afghanistan War for recent examples. It is much better to NOT send US troops. Send US money instead and avoid the terrible hangover.

why send either troops or money?

Are not many of these other nations that receive our foreign aid, troops, and/or protection themselves prosperous, developed nations able to look after their own national security? As I recall, that was the reason for Trump's inisistance that the NATO nations pay at least 2.2 pct of their GDP into military spending. After all, an aliance is supposed to be about MUTUAL defense, not giving 32 other nations a free ride forever.

Altho IMHO NATO has morphed into an aggressive entity not a muual defense pact.
It should be reduced and reconstituted, and ALL member nations should be equally responsible for defense.

In addition, every single one of our deployments has been to fight as aggessors on foreign soil. The USA has not fought a war to defend itself since the War of 1812. Or, some would say, the Civil War. What did the FF say about avoiding foreign entanglements?

Anyway, to get to prosperity for a moment: IMHO a nation cant be TRULY properous unless it has a productive, balanced economy as much as it is able. And that means ... yes, actually prosucing things. Tons of steel. Tons of grain. Barrels of oil, cubic meters of gas, tons of cement, chips, fertilizer, basic industrial chemicals, pharamceuticals, wood products, textiles, whatever it can produce it should. Many nations bc of historical accident are too small and have too few resources to be even modestly self sufficient; Japan and Cuba for example lack nearly every critical resource necessary for a modern economy. The USA, Russia, Canada, India and Brazil tho have great promise.

USA elites ditched production in favor of financialism, where costs are lower and returns are higher. Altho technically richer, if you discount non-productive entries int our GDP like the 'value' homeowners MIGHT receive IF they were torent their homes (yes, such bullshit really does enter into our so-called 'GDP') or look at purchasing power parity (PPP) or modal living standards, the USA doesnt stack up so hot

There have been multiple reports of this, even since 2014 when they invaded Donetsk region. And same happened in Georgia in 2008 and Chechnya in the 90s. Afghanistan, Syria, African countries….the list goes on.

Russian spy chief flags 'suspicious' Ukrainian nuclear activity

Firefly has lessons on how to handle Russians. Did you see Serenity? The big moment in Serenity was River standing on a pile of dead Reavers. Think Reavers as Russians. River did not capture the Russians and assign them POW status. River didn't contact the International Criminal Court prosecutors and present evidence that the Russians were guilty of War Crimes. Instead, River methodically killed all Russians. Nobody but the Russians would mourn the Russians passing away because Russians are horrible people who have killed tens of millions of Russians and also killed millions of innocent people who aren't Russian. Signym, if you keep insisting the Russians are not murderers, you are worse than a Russian. The Russians will die as Ukrainians slaughter the Russian horde because Russians don't listen to reason, Russians are trying to grow wealthy by stealing Ukrainian land, Russians won't stop murdering people, and Russians can no more stop lying than Signym can.
