Michelle Goldberg: Why Ukrainians believe they can win (and prove the Bible Prophesy Wrong about the King of the North, aka Putin)

I met Volodymyr Yermolenko, a Ukrainian philosopher and the chief editor of UkraineWorld, an English-language news site, in Kyiv in 2019.

I’d gone there to report on how Ukrainians felt about Donald Trump’s attempts to extort their president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and on the American right’s demonization of Ukrainians who’d worked against corruption. Yermolenko spoke, then, of Ukraine as a front line in the global battle between democracy and authoritarianism, with Europe on one side and Vladimir Putin’s Russia on the other — and the role of the United States under Trump confusing and ambiguous.

“It’s about whether democracy, rule of law, are spreading farther to the east,” he said of the conflict over Ukraine’s future. “It’s a long story how it spread to Eastern Europe — first it was Eastern Europe, Central Europe, then there was Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova. We hope it will someday reach Russia.” But it was possible that the ideological tide would go the other way. “There is a new authoritarianism going westward,” said Yermolenko. In this view, the fate of Ukraine’s nascent democracy was a sort of weather vane for the world.

I spoke to Yermolenko again Sunday, as Russian troops besieged his country. “The spirit is very strong,” he said. “There is no fatalism, no willingness to negotiate on Russia’s terms. There is decisiveness.” Ukrainian self-defense, he said, was chiefly a matter of patriotism, of people defending their home and way of life against a cruel foreign power. But he also saw it as part of the great ideological contest we’d discussed 2 1/2 years ago.

“There is a strong feeling that if Ukraine wins — and I’m sure it wins — that can bring the end of both Putin’s and Lukashenko’s regimes,” he said, referring to Alexander Lukashenko, the strongman president of Belarus, who is reportedly preparing to send troops to Ukraine to fight alongside Russia.

His confidence amazed me, but it appears to be widely shared across the country: According to a recent poll, 70% of Ukrainians outside of Russian-occupied territories think they will prevail against Russia. Oleksandra Ustinova, a member of the Ukrainian Parliament who is in Washington working on diplomatic outreach, said that Putin thought he could easily seize control of her country. “Ukrainians have proved that we’re not going to go down, and we do believe that we will win this war,” she said.

I have no idea if she’s right, though obviously I hope she is. Russia appears to have stumbled in the opening days of the invasion, but Ukraine’s army is still enormously overmatched, and Putin has the power to rain hell on the country. The Ukrainians’ stalwart faith in their ability to resist Russia, however, is an important political fact, one that people who predicted a quick Russian victory didn’t fully account for. It’s a faith that has stirred much of the world to unite against Russia, reinvigorating a liberal internationalism that until recently seemed spent and flaccid.

As inspiring as Ukrainian determination has been, it’s perhaps not that surprising. Anyone who’s visited Kyiv in recent years could see how much pride people took in the 2014 revolution that forced Viktor Yanukovych, the Kremlin-backed kleptocratic president, to flee to Russia. In Kyiv’s Independence Square, a monument to the revolution included photos, mounted on giant copper-colored plinths, of demonstrators burning tires to repel a crackdown and getting ready to pelt the riot police with cobblestones. Nearby, a vendor sold toilet paper with Putin’s face on it.

Sides are definitely coming into sharper focus. At this point it's starting to look like there's Russia and everybody else:

Apple Stops Sales in Russia—and Takes a Rare Stand
ON TUESDAY, APPLE said it was pausing all product sales and limiting the functionality of some of its services in Russia in response to Russian president Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. iPhones and other Apple products are currently not being sold through Apple Stores in Russia, and Apple Pay and other services have been limited.

The company has also removed Russian news apps—including the app for the Kremlin-backed news services Russia Today and Sputnik—from its App Stores in countries outside of Russia and said it has disabled traffic patterns and live incident reports in Apple Maps in Ukraine in order to deter the tracking of Ukrainians’ movements.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/01/energy/exxon-russia-sakhalin-project-ex
it/index.html

New York CNN Business —
ExxonMobil pledged Tuesday to leave its last remaining oil-and-gas project in Russia, and it will not invest in new developments in the oil-rich country.

By moving to discontinue its Sakhalin-1 project in Russia, Exxon joins a growing list of energy companies, including BP (BP) and Shell, that have announced their intention to leave Russia. Other Western companies including Apple (AAPL), Ford (F) and General Motors have also distanced themselves from Moscow in recent days.

“ExxonMobil supports the people of Ukraine as they seek to defend their freedom and determine their own future as a nation,” the company said in a statement. “We deplore Russia’s military action that violates the territorial integrity of Ukraine and endangers its people.”

At some point you'd think Putin would do the math. Or maybe he's ok with, "if I can't have it no one can."

Russia can’t access its stockpile of money, and freezing the ruble will also give China second thoughts about its own territorial and economic ambitions

The decision to block Russia’s central bank from international financial markets (effectively freezing the country’s foreign-exchange reserves) is arguably a masterstroke.

Insufficient funds

True, Russia has diversified its reserves away from the dollar in recent years. But judging by the scale of the international response and its immediate impact on the Russian economy, this strategy appears to have been insufficient to maintain access to the financing it needs. Even Switzerland has announced that it will participate in the new sanctions regime by freezing Russian assets.

Unless Russia has considerable reserves held in Chinese renminbi or currencies issued by other countries that still support it, the squeeze on its economy will be unavoidable.

It doesn’t take a deep thinker to appreciate that China must be alarmed and displeased by the audacity of both Russia’s war and the Western reaction to it. If China were to pursue military action against Taiwan, it, too, could expect to lose much of its access to the global financial system.

Many emerging economies will reconsider the textbook approach to building up foreign-exchange reserves to protect against economic crises. The need for such self-insurance was the big lesson from the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis. But now that Russia’s central bank has lost the ability to convert its foreign currencies into rubles, the strategy would appear to come with some new risks.

This is particularly true for countries whose aspirations might run afoul of the Western democratic world’s prevailing norms—as threatening and then invading a smaller neighbor obviously does.

You know nothing about American Bible Thumpers. Pat Robertson, biggest Bible Thumper in America, is a serial doomsday cheerleader. In the 1970s, he predicted a 1982 ending of the World. In the 1990s, he predicted a 2007 ending of the World. In 2020, he predicted Donald Trump would win reelection “without question” and it would lead to the end of the World. (In that case, it wasn’t a war that would end the World, as he is currently predicting about Russia vs Ukraine, but something a lot more natural, like an asteroid.)

“It’s sudden destruction. It’s not going to be some nuclear war,” Robertson said, per USA Today. “We’re not going to be allowed to blow this earth up.”

Centuries-old religious divide sharpens between Ukraine and Russia

President Putin’s battle to control the “Russian world” includes a religious front: a centuries-old spiritual and nationalist struggle within the Orthodox church – a part of the consciousness of average churchgoers worldwide.

The Orthodox Church of Ukraine, supported by the diaspora in North America, broke free from Moscow in 2019 – winning official recognition from the seat of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, based in Istanbul.

As a consequence of the autocephaly, Mr. Putin cut off all ties with Constantinople, a move that has split the Orthodox world over who has primacy to grant independence and where allegiances lie politically, says Frank Sysyn, a Toronto-based religious historian at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta.

“Putin’s battle for dominance in Ukraine is also what he would view as a spiritual struggle,” Dr. Sysyn says. “Putin has had to search for an ideology to replace communism for Moscow to be the center of what he calls the ‘Russian world,’ all the people who speak Russian or used to be part of the Russian Empire, and for him they should be part of this fortress that’s going to oppose the West and take over the Orthodox world.

“He argues the reason that Ukraine cannot be separate from Russia is they are one nation, one people, and should have one religion and one faith.”

The Orthodox churches in Ukraine had been under the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church since 1686. The fight for an autocephalous, or independent, church is a long and divisive history.

The Orthodox independence movement gained force in Ukraine after the fall of the officially atheist Soviet Union and, once again, after Mr. Putin’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. When Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko was elected that year, he saw an opportunity to appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians, for autocephaly, which was finally granted in 2019.

It was a huge event in the Orthodox world – and a major blow to Mr. Putin, who claims his own post-Soviet Orthodox religious awakening after his family narrowly escaped a fire at their dacha.

The issue has been more complex inside Ukraine than within the North American diaspora. By and large, the Orthodox diaspora in Canada and the U.S. identifies with an independent Ukrainian church, rather than the church that remained loyal to Moscow, and takes some credit for its new independence. When autocephaly was granted, Ukrainian Orthodox bishops from Canada and the U.S. were consulted – bolstering Mr. Putin’s claim that the independence movement was Western-backed.

Canada has one of the largest shares of the Ukrainian diaspora in the world, with 1.3 million people of Ukrainian descent, according to census figures. The U.S. Census Bureau identifies over 1 million people of Ukrainian descent in the U.S. And while the Ukrainian diaspora identifies primarily as Orthodox and Ukrainian Greek Catholic, which had its roots in western Ukraine, Mr. Putin invoked the Orthodox faith as one justification for invasion.

Ukrainian Orthodox churches outside Ukraine were not granted autocephaly; they remain under Constantinople. But most align and identify with the independence movement in Ukraine.

Claiming historical justifications for war in a Feb. 21 speech, Mr. Putin alleged that Kyiv was preparing “the destruction” of the Russian-backed Orthodox church in Ukraine – a Western attempt to betray Ukraine’s true, Russian, identity. But even that Russian-backed church’s leader has since compared the invasion to “the sin of Cain.”

The autocephaly issue is viewed on both sides as a reflection of the bigger struggle for Ukrainian independence that goes well beyond a distinct political or theological moment.

“By pursuing relentlessly the path of independence, this was clearly a way for the church to remove any semblance of subordination to Moscow. It was really, in a certain sense, a firm and final rejection of Russian Orthodox governance,” says the Rev. Nicholas Denysenko, Emil and Elfriede Jochum professor at Valparaiso University in Indiana. “It was Ukrainians claiming their own Orthodox life, but it was also in a certain sense experienced and interpreted by Russians as an affront.”

Why don't you tell us how you're going to murder Trump and feed him to the pigs again, or tell us how everybody needs to rise up and murder their bosses and steal everything they own, Arthur.

I've got a very, very long list of archived posts of yours that would show anyone who read them everything they need to know about you.

Humanitarian corridors were negotiated.

This could be useful

Reminds me of the battle for Aleppo. Remember, however, it wasn't the Russians who blocked the humanitarian corridors, but the various terrorist groups (ISIS,HTS etc) who didn't want to lose their human shields.

So let's hope that the far right Ukies stick to the agreement- something they don't have a great history of doing- and allow civilians and surrendering soldiers to exit safely.

The best summary of the military situation is that the Ukrainian army - appx 15 divisions (somewhere between 50,000-75,000 troops) are bottled up Ina cauldron in the SE, unable to get to Kiev. Small groups of unarmed troops will probably be allowed to "melt away", as happened in 2014 cauldrons, but arms and military equipment will have to stay behind.

Azov (far right pro Nazi) Battalion is entrenched in Mariupol. He said/he said, Moscow blames failure of the cease fire on Azov not allowing civilians to leave, that the other side never agreed to cease fire terms . Deputy Mayor claims it is Russian shelling. International Red Cross (IRC) says negotiations continue and hopes an agreement can be reached.

There are reports of regular army firing on Azov Battalion. Not sure how credible, but hearing from multiple sources. If true, my guess is that many in the regular army would like to surrender but Azov Battalion and other far right groups are trying to stiffen the army.

Meanwhile several other cauldrons are being formed: an obvious one around Odessa, another around Kiev, and one (or possibly two) large cauldrons in central Ukraine.

A Ukrainian negotiator who was present during the first round with Russia was assassinated by the Ukrainian secret police.

Zelensky has been threatened more than once with death by the Right Sector if he makes peace with Russia. If he remains in Ukraine he will be at risk; maybe he needs to negotiate from another location?

I still think we will see a replay of tactics in Syria, altho Russians really didn't t have a lot of "boots on the ground" (the Syrian Army filled that role) there: that is, humanitarian corridors, negotiate safe passage for the enemy to a known location where they could be concentrated.

What I should have reminded people is that, in Syria, the humanitarian corridors operated as well as the terrorists who occupied the cities allowed them to operate.

Russians had no interest in shooting civilians or surrendering soldiers there, just like they have no interest in shooting civilians in Ukraine. But those who hold civilians hostage don't want to lose their human shields.

This was very obvious to anyone following the fight for Aleppo: It was a combination of humanitarian corridors (which the terrorists did not allow to function), shelling/bombing, negotiations and street fighting. It took over a month to free Aleppo from the terrorists' grip.

Many Ukrainian cities will probably surrender, but Mariupol is occupied by a bunch of committed pro-Nazi fascists, so this will be a slog.

If I want to know what the idiot M$M wants us to think, all I need to do you read your posts.

What is Signym reading? This:
Quote:

Cities provide a very desirable environment for defensive operations, especially if you are willing to have a lot of civilian casualties. In our case, not only are the Ukronazis willing, they have established an entire system to maximize causalities. In several cities the Ukies are holding the locals has human shields (remember that under the Bandera ideology, the eastern Ukrainians are “separs” which only deserve death anyway, so murdering them is a no-brainer).
Do you really believe this, Signym? Meanwhile, in reality:

Ukraine war: 'My city's being shelled, but mum won’t believe me'

"When I heard the first explosions, I ran out of the house to get my dogs from their enclosures outside. People were panicking, abandoning their cars. I was so scared," she says.

The 25-year-old has been speaking regularly to her mother, who lives in Moscow. But in these conversations, and even after sending videos from her heavily bombarded hometown, Oleksandra is unable to convince her mother about the danger she is in.

"I didn't want to scare my parents, but I started telling them directly that civilians and children are dying," she says.

"But even though they worry about me, they still say it probably happens only by accident, that the Russian army would never target civilians. That it's Ukrainians who're killing their own people."

It's common for Ukrainians to have family across the border in Russia. But for some, like Oleksandra, their Russian relatives have a contrasting understanding of the conflict. She believes it's down to the stories they are told by the tightly-controlled Russian media.

Seems like Putin's caught between a rock and a hard place. How sad.

Paul Krugman @paulkrugman tweeted:

The speed with which Russia has been cut off from the world economy has been as stunning as the slowness with which Russian forces have advanced in Ukraine. But can Putin offset the de facto blockade by dealing with China? That would be harder than many imagine 1/

For one thing, while China and Russia are technically neighbors, in economic terms they really aren't. Russia's economy is mostly west of the Urals, China's near the coasts. The population centers of gravity are very far apart 2/

As Noah Smith documents, the economies aren't very complementary either 3/

Furthermore, Chinese banks — which do a lot of business with the rest of the world — will be very reluctant to deal with Russia 4/

Why China’s Banks Won’t Come to Russia’s Rescue
On paper, China’s banks and its homegrown payments system could offer Russia respite from crippling Western sanctions. In practice, it isn’t that simple.

And there's one more point, which I haven't seen people making: the huge imbalance between the national economies. Russia is really tiny compared with China 5/

So if you imagine that China and Russia will somehow form a new authoritarian Axis, Russia would be overwhelmingly the junior partner. In fact, Russia is far less powerful relative to China than Mussolini's Italy was relative to Germany 6/

The only thing Russia might have had to offset this imbalance was its reputation for having a highly effective military machine. That reputation has already been lost in the Ukrainian mud 7/

It would be ironic if Putin's attempt to reestablish the Russian empire ends up turning Russia into a Chinese vassal state. But that's exactly what will happen if he relies on China to bail him out now 8/

Perhaps a more realistic strep from the Saker

Quote:

First, since Boris Rozhin did take the time to write up a summary for the day, I will begin by sharing with you a machine translation of his summary of the day:

1. Negotiations between the Russian Federation and Ukraine will be held tomorrow on the territory of Belarus. Moscow has made it clear once again today that if Kiev does not accept the conditions (without any concessions), the consequences for Ukrainian statehood will be severe. The United States says that the second phase of the operation may begin on Monday, including operations to establish control over Odessa and Kiev, as well as the encirclement of the AFU group in the Donbas. In the statements of Zelensky’s gang, there are more and more hysterical notes and accusations against the West that he threw (there has never been such a thing).

2. Humanitarian corridors in Mariupol and Volnovakha are still being disrupted by the Nazis from Azov, despite all agreements. Is anyone surprised? I’m not. So far, it has been possible to free about 300 people from the hands of terrorists who were holed up in Mariupol. Several dozen more were able to escape from Volnovakha. Ukrainian terrorists do not want to get rid of their human shield in any way. Which condemns many people to death when the counter-terrorist operation begins in Mariupol itself and the active cleaning of Volnovakha continues.

3. Misunderstandings continue with Zelensky’s real whereabouts, and Ukrainian and American sources are dispersing the news about Zelensky’s impending evacuation to the West, and the search for spies and traitors is also continuing. Kivu was accused of “high treason” and put on the wanted list. They’ll catch him, probably kill him like Kireev. And there they will already think who he is a “traitor” or a “hero”. Zelensky himself said today that the West wants Ukrainians to be killed (woke up) and that “we are fighting for where the new border will be.” The old border will obviously no longer exist. The borders will change in any case – the question of course is interesting, where they will pass.

4. Anti-war rallies are taking place in the Russian Federation today, with the help of which Zelensky called for stopping the operation in Ukraine. Judging by the number of people gathered, even the arrest of Navalny (who is this, by the way?) and coronavirus restrictions (by the way, where is covid?) they worried citizens more. But let’s see, maybe by the evening the number will grow up. In the meantime, everything is pretty pathetic, which was apparently facilitated by a fierce information sweep, which continued today.

5. The enforcement of the law on fakes on the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation has begun today. The first lucky person got off with a fine of 60,000 rubles. I had the idea to write about the problems in the offensive operation (of course, they also exist), but I’ll wait for now – we need to see how the law works in practice. Well, or after the end of the operation there will be material when military censorship will not be so fierce.
With regard to the operation itself, it is worth noting that even in the West there are discrepancies regarding the plans of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, although the progress on the map gives some idea of what they are striving for. From a subjective point of view, priority No. 1 is the destruction of the AFU group in the Donbas by encircling and defeating this group, which will deprive Ukraine of most of the armed forces and heavy equipment.

***

Yesterday Putin had a most interesting conversations with members of what look like members of an flight attendant union. We hope to bring the the whole thing subtitled in English later today, but here is the key sentence made by Putin during that conversation:

Translation: If the leadership of Ukraine continues to do what they are doing, it will call into question the future of Ukrainian statehood, and that will be entirely their responsibility

I think that it is important to understand the context in which Putin made this statement. As a reminder

The Ukronazi armed forces are down to less than 25% of its original size.
Almost all the remaining forces are in some type or another of cauldrons.
Russia has full air supremacy
The Ukronazi fleet does not exist anymore
In spite of all the propaganda, no help from abroad will affect the outcome of this war
It appears that Russia will surround Odessa and eventually take control of the entire Ukrainian Black Sea coast

In other words, what seems to be shaping up is that Russia will soon have control over the entire Ukraine except for the western provinces (west of Vinnitsa and Zhitomir). In other words, the war is over, at least militarily. There will be a meeting between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators tomorrow, and it shall be interesting to see if something, anything, will come out of it.

The west is clearly determined to heroically fight Russia down to the last Ukrainian. Russia wants to stop this operation as soon as possible, but only after her double goals of 1) disarmament and 2) denazification are achieved.

Right now the big question is Kiev. It’s a big city with plenty of civilians and probably 30-50 thousand combatants of all different kinds (VSU, SBU, Volkssturm, deathsquads, looters, etc.). The logical solution would be to offer the combatants (and the civilians) corridors to exit the city, but the West can’t have that.

Now if the Ukies won’t vacate Kiev, then some rather serious fighting will take place inside the city and clearing the city from the Nazis will demand the involvement of a major Russian force. It appears that these forces are now in their staging areas all around the city (except for the south).

Think about it this way: the frontline (line of contact) is now very long and the Ukies don’t have enough forces to even try to hold any frontline in such a context.

However, remember the number of Russian forces deployed along the Ukrainian border – about 100’000+ or so soldiers? It appears that there are currently not enough Russia forces to fully exploit the Russian advances over the past ten days. Alternatively, we could say that the Russian force is big enough, but that now it has to sharply increase its use of firepower to further develop its operations.

For all these reasons, here is what I suppose is in the making:

If the Ukrainian delegation agrees to a surrender, then things can be resolved with the least amount of needless deaths and suffering. However, the West will not allow the Ukrainians to surrender and those Ukrainians who might agree to talk will get shot by their own (it is happening all over Banderastan right now).
Having received a Ukrainian rejection, I believe that Russia will bring in more forces and will begin by clearing out the Mariupol and Odessa cauldrons (or “soon to be cauldrons”).
In at least one case (near Voznesensk) a Ukrainian counter-attack did break through the Russian defensive lines. This shows that the Russian lines are thinning out as a consequence of their own successes, and that then allows the Nazi forces to mount successful counter-attacks.
It is also quite clear that the US/NATO is offering the Ukrainians its full reconnaissance/intelligence support and that while their own networks and command posts are gone, the US/NATO continue to support Ukie operations.

For all these reasons, and failing some kind of ceasefire, the next 7-10 days ought to see a sharp increase in Russian operations not only in the air and on the ground, but also on the sea where the Black Sea Fleet will be engaged to secure the Ukrainian coast line. The Russian might also have to do something about NATO’s intel/recon support for Ukrainian forces, either overtly or with a modicum of plausible deniability.

Which begs one question: how far west are the Russians willing to go?

I don’t know. But I know that during his talk yesterday Putin indicated that “only” supporting and defending the LDNR would not be enough because the Ukrainian forces in the Donbass would receive a constant flow of support from the West.

Hence the Russian General Staff decided that it needed to do two things first: destroy the Ukrainian defense infrastructure and 2, encircle the Ukronazi forces in the Donbass by a envelopment/pincer movement from the south and the north. I still am waiting for a confirmation that this operational-level cauldron is locked, but nobody (that I know of) produced any recent map for today. Still, I think that we can safely assume that cauldron will be locked very soon (or has already been locked).

Still, major (relatively speaking) Ukrainian force concentrations have dug in and are ready for long urban combat operations in at least the following cities: Odessa, Dnepr and Kiev. Could the Russian military evict the Nazis from these cities? Yes, Mariupol is being cleaned up as we speak, but only at a high human cost (on all sides) and by bringing in more firepower (on the ground and in the air).

My guess is that the Russians have decided to clear the entire south front first. Russian forces are already in between Nikolaev and Odessa, and the Black Sea Fleet has reportedly conducted strikes southwest of Odessa. Right now the Black Sea Fleet is keeping the Ukrainians guessing whether there will be an amphibious assault and if yes, were.

I am no prophet, but a securing a bridgehead southwest of Odessa to then land an amphibious assault force and develop it all from there seems like a reasonable idea to me.

Once both Odessa and Nikolaev are either taken or, at least, solidly surrounded then Russia can free more forces to move north. Likewise, as soon as the operational cauldron in the Donbass is locked, this will also free more forces to then move west. If this is successful, then Russia will have achieved a strategic cauldron encompassing the entire Ukraine west of the Vinnitsa-Zhitomir line.

If this is not successful and Russians lose their tempo, then the only solution left will be to sharply increase the intensity of the entire operation. I think that this is exactly what Putin had in mind when he said “If the leadership of Ukraine continues to do what they are doing, it will call into question the future of Ukrainian statehood, and that will be entirely their responsibility“.

So, to sum it all up:

Russia would prefer to end this war at the negotiations table
The West wants to fight Russia down to the last Ukrainian
and the Ukrainians… …actually, I have no idea what they are up to, what they still hope for, what they understand or not, but the best thing they could do would be to rise up against the Nazis, disarm them and declare their cities open. Either that, or emigrate.

This is a totally depressing thought, but I see no other option for Russia but to turn up the “pain dial” on both the Ukrainians and the West and see if they are now willing to stop this war.

If not, then turn it up again, and then repeat as many times as needed until either 1) the West capitulates or 2) the Ukraine is unilaterally disarmed and denazified by Russia.

Here is what is also crucial to understand:

Russia was willing, when forced, to intervene in the Ukraine. If forced, Russia will take on any country, including any NATO member country, which will assist the Ukrainians militarily. If forced, Russia will even fight all of NATO and the USA together and, if forced, she will use all her weapons, including nuclear ones. And if that means that the entire planet is nuked then, as Putin said, “we have no need for a planet without Russia”. All this is to say that Russia is not bluffing, Putin will not back down and that there is no price which Russia would not be willing to pay to prevail in this existential war.

Russia will not stop until her existence is made safe again.

What about the West?

I believe that the West has a “smartass policy”: we do fight down the the last Ukie, and we get as many Steppe Niggers and Snow Niggers to kill each other, but then we stop just short of nuclear war with Russia.

Question: do you trust the geniuses in power in the West to successfully walk this tightrope?

I sure don’t.

Reach your own conclusions.

Andrei

Most of the Russians in Russia who repeat the propaganda are typically older and only have access to that information. Most of those who say they are with Putin do so because they are afraid to speak out. The majority of Russians are against what is going on. And innocent Russians in America and around the world are being targeted. Targeted in different ways like people not wanting to eat in their establishments. They’ve done nothing so unless they are like Signym and kiki that’s very sad.

Have you noticed how Signym and kiki don't protest, that in Russia if you peacefully object to Putins’ invasion you can be put in jail for 15 years? I’d say that’s evidence she is ok with that. And I’d say that demonstrates when others call her vermin, they are correct. And let’s never let her forget when she is criticizing others, she is much much worse.

I see she is posting extremely long posts again. If she keeps it up I’m going to repost her posts in her gardens thread. She doesn’t like when current events are posted in her utopia thread. It’s where she hides after posting bullshit in everyone else’s threads.

Did Putin Use A Green Screen To Fake An Aeroflot Meeting?

Why Would Putin Fake The Aeroflot Video?

There’s good reason to question this video being real. Putin has appeared on TV several times recently. Every time he’s very far away from everyone else. In fact, he’s becoming a bit of a meme for it.

It’s not immediately clear why he sits so far away from everyone else. It might be a ploy to make the people of Russia believe he’s the only one in control. It may be something a lot more practical; Covid-19. Yes, Putin, like his buddy Trump, is a germaphobe.

The long tables keep him away from others and should keep him slightly safer too. Realistically, this is the most likely reason for the long tables. Which does make the Aeroflot video very odd.

Assuming the long tables are about self-preservation, why would Putin be sitting near flight attendants? Flight attendants that were likely flying with hundreds of passengers until very recently.

That would be another massive indication that the video was faked. I’ll also admit that there are several scenes where the video just looks weird. One of the biggest tricks with green screening is getting the lighting perfect. Yet in parts, it does look slightly off – like here for example.

However, it’s also entirely possible we’re just trying to find something that isn’t there. Occam’s Razor suggests the simplest answer is often the most likely. And the simplest answer here is everyone had PCR tests, Putin was really in the room and took the risk to look cool beside a load of female flight attendants.

At the end of the day, he’s up against Volodymyr Zelenskyy who is infinitely cooler and more impressive anyway.

Please remember to donate to the Irish Red Cross if you can.

141 vote to condemn Russia:

This is what was being voted on:

Item 5 - Draft resolution A/ES-11/L.1 Aggression against Ukraine

Condemning the 24 February 2022 declaration by the Russian Federation of a “special military operation” in Ukraine,

Reaffirming that no territorial acquisition resulting from the threat or use of force shall be recognized as legal,

Expressing grave concern at reports of attacks on civilian facilities such as residences, schools and hospitals, and of civilian casualties, including women, older persons, persons with disabilities, and children,

Recognizing that the military operations of the Russian Federation inside the sovereign territory of Ukraine are on a scale that the international community has not seen in Europe in decades and that urgent action is needed to save this generation from the scourge of war,

Endorsing the Secretary-General’s statement of 24 February 2022 in which he recalled that the use of force by one country against another is the repudiation of the principles that every country has committed to uphold and that the present military offensive of the Russian Federation is against the Charter,

Condemning the decision of the Russian Federation to increase the readiness of its nuclear forces,

Fuck you you Russian pig. 99% of the world knows you're full of shit, that you are lying. It is why they have wrapped their hands around Putins' throat and are strangling him.

I would add, once again everyone who is traveling is traveling away from Russa not towards. That includes Russians in Russia.

Russian Defence Ministry says they found evidence of US-funded biolabs in Ukraine, deadly pathogens were ‘urgently destroyed’

Obviously, after the launch of the special military operations, Pentagon became afraid that secret biological experiments in Ukraine will be exposed. We will share the results of the analysis of the documents we have received in the near future. Some of them, in particular, the Ukrainian health ministry's instruction to destroy pathogens and certificates of completion from the Kharkiv and Poltava bio laboratories we are publishing right now", said Igor Konashenkov, a defence ministry spokesperson in Russia.

Hey, that's not me. I'm just passing on stuff. Biowarfare research is a serious allegation. If there is evidence I'm sure it will be presented. If there's no evidence, then we can drop it

Russia said Monday it will open humanitarian corridors the next day to allow civilians to evacuate form several Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kyiv and the port city of Mariupol, Russian news agencies reported.

"From 10:00 MSK (0700 GMT) on March 8, 2022 the Russian Federation is declaring a 'regime of silence' and is ready to provide humanitarian corridors," said a cell of the Russian defence ministry charged with humanitarian operations in Ukraine.

It listed evacuation routes from Kyiv as well as Mariupol, Kharkiv and Sumy -- all of which have been under heavy Russian attacks in recent days.

However, if Aleppo is any guide, while Russian forces can open humanitarian corridors, forces occupying the city won't necessarily allow residents to use them

Quote:

... in the mean time, there are numerous reports from many towns and cities under Nazi occupation of the local municipal authorities warning that anybody using a humanitarian corridor leading to the “occupier force” will be shot on sight and with no warning. There are many confirmed instances of such fleeing refugees being executed by the Ukronazis. The western presstitutes are blaming it all on Russia. What else is new?

I suppose one way to tell if the civilians are being executed by Ukie-Nazi forces is to look at the victims' wounds. If they're all short range small arms fire, most likely it was an execution. But if they're from mortar, artillery, bombs, or missiles, I suppose that would be from invaders.

In Aleppo, which I followed very closely, much was made (in the western press) of the hundreds of thousands of trapped civilians, without ever addressing the fact that the Russians withheld fire on these corridors but very few residents were able to escape, and when they did it was under fire from ISIS/HTS terrorists.

Interestingly, the residents seem to be able to melt from one neighborhood to another, so even as Syrian troops established control over one neighborhood after another, rather than the civilian hostages being concentrated into a smaller and smaller area, they seemed to slip thru the terrorists' grasp. Let's hope that Ukie civilians are as slippery as the Syrians.

Putin announced that he will use biological warfare and blame the U.S. because it is impossible to tell who killed the Ukrainians.

Russia says U.S. has biolabs with plague and anthrax in Ukraine

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said evidence of the alleged programme had been uncovered by Russia during what it calls its military operation in Ukraine, which its forces invaded on Feb. 24. It involved deadly pathogens including plague and anthrax, she said.

Zakharova said Russia had documents showing that the Ukrainian health ministry had ordered the destruction of samples of plague, cholera, anthrax and other pathogens after Feb. 24.

"We can already conclude that in Ukrainian biological laboratories in direct proximity to the territory of our country, development of components of biological weapons was being carried out," she said.

It was not possible to independently confirm the authenticity of any such documents. (Reuters goes to silly extremes to not call this a hoax by Putin.)

Zakharova said the alleged programme was financed by the Pentagon. "We are not talking here about peaceful uses or scientific goals."

The Biden administration must officially explain to the world "officially, not through talking heads" about the programmes in Ukraine, she said, adding: "We demand details."

Zakharova said it was not clear if the alleged materials had been destroyed and she asked if they had fallen into the hands of extremists or nationalists.

CAPTAINCRUNCH

... stay crunchy...

Russia's ability to lie is without peer, but their lies are so immature and juvenile (not unlike Iraq's), always easy to spot.

Twitter user: Joanna Szostek ????@Joanna_SzostekLecturer in Political Communication @UofGlasgow and associate fellow of @CHRussiaEurasia. Researching & tweeting mainly about media, politics, Ukraine & Russia.

"I'm regularly asked what Russian media are reporting about Ukraine, usually by people who don't speak Russian.
And I struggle to convey the **scale of lies and sheer depravity** of Russian state media content.
Words like "disinfo" aren't enough.

There is an article on the website of Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. It is one of Russia's top news websites. Hundreds of thousands of people have already read the article. It is titled "Kiev has experienced an exodus". Here are some highlights.

Ukrainian "patriotic bloggers and other so-called leaders of public opinion" "created moral hell" by their presence in Kyiv and now they will do the same in Moldova, Poland and Zakarpattia to which they have fled.

Municipal authorities in Kyiv now "can't organize the most basic things" and the "main problem" is their "inability to organize normal provisions of medicines" even though "Kyiv isn't even blocked, roads to the south and south-west are open".

"Most people still in the city are still rather optimistic about the military action thanks to a powerful flood of information", although they "don't believe in victory so hysterically any more".

"It is completely obvious that the Ukrainian leadership is not particularly interested in saving civilian lives"

"If the de-Nazification operation is not completed, the scale of human skulls in the Third Reich will look like nothing against what they will come up with in the New Ukraine", with risk of this spreading to Russia.

This is just one awful, awful article on one major Russian "news" website. But there are dozens and dozens of websites and TV channels saying the same thing. You see, it's not just "disinformation". It's not even just the Russian-language equivalent of RT or Sputnik.

It isn't even the absense of truth which is most nauseating (although that's nauseating enough). It's the total absense of humanity, the callousness towards people who are Russians' neigbours & relatives.
No hell can be hot enough for those who work now for Russia's state media."

No wonder they like Steven Segal movies.
