KRA2PO: Another bad take. As you point out, in 2010, 49% of Ukrainians voted in a pro-Russian president. But in the 2019 elections only 16% of Ukrainians voted for pro-Russian candidates.

You carefully massage your messages to mean the opposite of what happened. Now I happen to remember that election, and one of the things that Zelenskiy ran AND WON ON was that he was Russian-speaking from central Ukraine, and promised peace and unity with Russian-speaking Ukraine. Even wikipedia... wikipedia, for god's sake, the notoriously pro-establishment "open source" website, knows about it

Quote:

He has positioned himself as an anti-establishment and anti-corruption figure. As president, Zelenskyy has been a proponent of e-government and of unity between the Ukrainian and Russian speaking parts of the country's population... During his presidential campaign, Zelenskyy promised to end Ukraine's protracted conflict with Russia, and he has attempted to engage in dialogue with Russian president Vladimir Putin.

He also promised a strong anti-corruption, populist program, but like most politicians he promised one agenda and delivered another.

Yeah, if you only poll Ukrainians on the Kiev side of the front ... which is what happened... and skew your polling to focus on people who agree with you, especially since Kiev has canceled all political opposition and has the state security apparatus to back that up, you will get the most skewed of skewed polls.

You're just a paid political propagandist. Unlike THUGR, who mindlessly and enthusiastically supports whatever he's told to support, and SECOND, who spews incoherently, YOU are vey carful with insinuations and words. A real paid operative if there ever was one.

For the first known time in public, Putin calls fighting in Ukraine a ‘war’

“Our goal is not to spin the flywheel of military conflict, but, on the contrary, to end this war,” Putin told reporters in Moscow, after attending a State Council meeting on youth policy.

Putin’s critics say that using the word “war” to describe the Ukraine conflict has effectively been illegal in Russia since March, when the Russian leader signed a censorship law that makes it a crime.

Nikita Yuferev, a municipal lawmaker from St. Petersburg who fled Russia due to his antiwar stance, on Thursday said he had asked Russian authorities to prosecute Putin for “spreading fake information about the army.”

“There was no decree to end the special military operation, no war was declared,” Yuferev wrote on Twitter. “Several thousand people have already been condemned for such words about the war.”

A US official told CNN their initial assessment was that Putin’s remark was not intentional and likely a slip of the tongue. However, officials will be watching closely to see what figures inside the Kremlin say about it in the coming days.

North Korea has delivered arms to Russia's private military group Wagner

The group, which is independent of the Russian defense establishment and is leading a bloody siege of Bakhmut, Ukraine, is spending more than $100 million each month on its Ukraine operations.

Wagner is emerging as a rival power center to the Russian military and other Russian ministries.

The mercenary-like army has been carrying out operations — ostensibly private but implicitly approved by the Kremlin — in Syria, Libya, Sudan, the Central African Republic and other countries in Africa.

In Ukraine, the group has served as an elite special forces-type operation that has better training, equipment and supplies than the mainstream Russian military.

Cool, cool. Your righteous determination to destroy democracy is not at all reminiscent of 1930s Germany.

That reminded me of an article written before the war started:

February 3, 2022 - The Reason Putin Would Risk War

He is threatening to invade Ukraine because he wants democracy to fail — and not just in that country.

Why would Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, attack a neighboring country that has not provoked him? Why would he risk the blood of his own soldiers? Why would he risk sanctions, and perhaps an economic crisis, as a result? Why is he playing this elaborate game?

Ukraine has extraordinary significance to Putin. Ukraine matters because it has tried — struggled, really — to join the world of prosperous Western democracies. Ukraine has staged not one but two pro-democracy, anti-oligarchy, anti-corruption revolutions in the past two decades. The most recent, in 2014, was particularly terrifying for the Kremlin. Young Ukrainians were chanting anti-corruption slogans, just like the Russian opposition does, and waving European Union flags. These protesters were inspired by the same ideals that Putin hates at home and seeks to overturn abroad. After Ukraine’s profoundly corrupt, pro-Russian president fled the country in February 2014, Ukrainian television began showing pictures of his palace, complete with gold taps, fountains, and statues in the yard — exactly the kind of palace Putin inhabits in Russia. Indeed, we know he inhabits such a palace because one of the videos produced by Navalny has already shown us pictures of it, along with its private ice-hockey rink and its hookah bar.

Putin’s subsequent invasion of Crimea punished Ukrainians for trying to escape from the kleptocratic system that he wanted them to live in — and it showed Putin’s own subjects that they too would pay a high cost for democratic revolution.

To explain why requires some history, but not the semi-mythological, faux-medieval history Putin has used in the past to declare that Ukraine is not a country, or that its existence is an accident, or that its sense of nationhood is not real. Nor do we need to know that much about the more recent history of Ukraine or its 70 years as a Soviet republic—though it is true that the Soviet ties of the Russian president, most notably his years spent as a KGB officer, matter a great deal. Indeed, many of his tactics—the use of sham Russian-backed “separatists” to carry out his war in eastern Ukraine, the creation of a puppet government in Crimea—are old KGB tactics, familiar from the Soviet past. Fake political groupings played a role in the KGB’s domination of Central Europe after World War II; sham separatists played a role in the Bolshevik conquest of Ukraine itself in 1918.

Fuck you idiot. I've been warning you about this for years.

And I've been warning Democrats they need to close those loopholes before Republicans even started talking about using them against you just this year.

No. Blame GOP Neo-Con "leadership" and en masse mail-in fraud ballots.

This guy gets it:

Republicans need to figure out mail-in voting

It’s being used by Democrats to influence the course of elections

https://spectatorworld.com/topic/democrats-mail-voting-midterms-fix/

Quote:

I raised the idea of outlawing mail-in voting with a canny friend. “The Dems would never allow it,” he said, comparing the practice to nuclear weapons. Once they exist, it is impossible to get rid of them. Maybe so, in which case it behooves Republicans to become experts in organizing and deploying mail-in voting for their own candidates.

If nothing else, a little competition in the mail-in ballot sweepstakes would counter the invitation to corruption that follows on the feeling that the fix is in. In the election just past, it seemed, despite media forecasts of a red wave, that a certain complacency was abroad in and about the headquarters of certain contentious races. Gretchen Whitmer never seemed particularly worried about Tudor Dixon, nor did John Fetterman seem worried about Dr. Oz. Of course, Fetterman is a special case. But the point is, I believe, they knew that the fix was in and therefore — to employ another common idiom — that the race was in the bag.

Let me break that down for you...

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. ~Bugs Bunny

If they want to cheat, let 'em cheat. We're going to cheat better, and we're going to end up taking all the Democrat strongholds away from them co-opting the platform that they championed to allow widespread cheating and never let them cheat better than we will cheat.

We don't allow the cheating in Indiana, but I just might stay overnight at my Grandma's for a few weeks in 2024 and go door to door collecting thousands of ballots from people who would have otherwise been too lazy to vote. That's how they win. We can do it better. And it will all be legal because they made it legal.

Since we're never going to put the shit back in the horse and put an end to covid mail-in fraud ballots in the blue states, it's time for Republicans to start canvassing the streets and ballot harvesting like the Democrats do.

Here in Indiana I only have one vote; one voice. If I spend a week at my Grandma's house in Illinois though, I could have 2,500 votes; 2,500 voices, simply by using Democrat's method of legalizing cheating against them.

When Trump gets that memo what do you think your chances in 2024 are?

Yup. If a guy living in the middle of flyover country who hasn't made any money since June of 2019 could figure this one out, how long did you think it would take the strategists making the big bucks to come around to the same conclusion?

I hope you're happy opening up the floodgates for cheating, now that they're open for everyone.

Who do you think is better at cheating? I mean, the answer to that question that you'd always give under any other circumstance probably has to have you terrified right about now, huh?

Hmmmm... Maybe 2,500 votes; 2,500 voices is far too low a goal for me. I did win a SONY Boombox back in middle school for out-selling every other student in the place with one of the fundraisers, despite the fact that very little of that money came from my family and nobody else helped me sell any of it.

Just door to door knocking every day after school for hours with my eye on the prize.

Yeah. I'd better wrap up my outside work in 2024 early, because I know what I'm going to be doing in October. And Trump doesn't even have to pay me any of that campaign money to do it.

You want to cheat, motherfuckers? Suit yourself. I guaranty you that I'm better at it than you are.

Go ahead dipshits. Keep telling me that what you did hasn't opened up the door for all sorts of cheating with no checks and balances in place.

Not only can you amplify the amount of voices and votes you have, but you can actually delete voices an votes from the other side during the process, and nobody is ever going to be able to verify or prove that this happened.

You dumb fucks have been doing EXACTLY this for two elections and you still lost the house and the popular vote by 3.5 Million votes last week.

What do you think happens to Blue States when Trump decides not to throw the money into TV ads and instead mobilizes and funds grassroots campaigns to canvas blue states for ballot harvesting that you made legal for him?

Do you get it now? Is this finally sinking in?

This would still allow for your vote to be private information, but it would give you a means of making sure that somebody didn't fuck you.

I shouldn't have to remind you dipshits, but I'm NOT a Republican and I've spent most of my life loathing the Republican Party until the Democrats went insane.

My desire was that the Republicans take back the blue and swing states in one or two elections by cheating better than Democrats cheat using their own rules against them and then STOP THE CHEATING APPARATUS you dumb shits set up for them, but now I have my doubts that this will ever happen.

Why give up that amount of power?

You want to save Democracy, Democrats? I mean REALLY SAVE DEMOCRACY?

You've got two months left to do it.

On a state level you need to put the shit back in the horse now and end all mail-in and dropbox voting before you lose the house. Put the Republicans, who are just fucking itching to cheat in 2024 using the rules you set up, in a position where they would have to change those rules back and explain to their base why they're doing it (making pure hypocrites out of them in the process).

I think I should probably create a thread about this so it doesn't keep getting buried under tons of other crap. I know that everybody is sick of elections right now and nobody is paying attention to my thoughts on this issue at the moment, but now you've got the WSJ weighing in on this today too.

I'm not joking, Democrats. You don't have a lot of time to close those COVID loopholes you created for mail-in voting, and you can be damn sure that just like the Ring of Sauron the Republicans won't give that up if it's still open by next election now that they're figuring out how best to exploit it.

You'd better close them up and put Republicans in the hypocritical spot of opening them back up for no damn good reason, or elections are never going to be the same again.

Pennsylvania Republicans reconsider their war on mail voting

“There’s no question in my mind that Republicans have to have a different mail-in strategy,” said Andy Reilly, a Republican National Committeeman in Pennsylvania. “When one party votes for 30 days and one party votes for one, you’re definitely going to lose.”

...

Quote:

But, to a large degree, Republicans in the state seem poised to move forward with mail voting regardless of what Trump says. Many have concluded they can’t win otherwise. Charlie Gerow, the Pennsylvania-based vice chair of the Conservative Political Action Coalition, likened the GOP’s approach to mail-in voting to a basketball player who abstains from shooting from behind the three-point line because he doesn’t like the rule.

“You could play a game that way. And more times than not, you would lose,” he said. “Or you can say, ‘Hey, I don’t like the three-point line. But by gosh, I’m going to be the best three-point shooter you can find.’ And that’s what I think the Republicans have to be now.”

I'll ask the question again...

I know this is hard for some of you to hear, but as it happens, Republicans are quite capable of voting by mail too. And, as has been shown in several key California districts critical to the GOP taking over the House next month, they can also ballot harvest. It just takes a paradigm shift that has been a long time coming.

Attorney Harmeet Dhillon, who should be running the Republican National Committee instead of perpetual losers like Ronna McDaniel, suggested as much during an appearance on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” last week. “We are not chasing ballots,” she said. “We are not doing what the Democrats do, which is making sure that we hunt down every Republican ballot and get it to the polls and get it in early.”

The Democrat Party's mail-in fraud grift is being co-opted.

You're running out of time to make sure that they can't cheat better than you can using the cheating apparatus you made for them going forward. Because spoiler alert... they can and apparently that's what they fully intend to do.

You say that now because you just won.

Hillary Clinton is a lot of things, but she isn't stupid. She's been saying that Republicans are going to cheat and win in 2024 since two months before the 2022 election.

What she didn't tell you was that they're going to cheat using the cheating apparatus that the Democrat party set up for them during Covid. The same cheating apparatus that saw Joe Biden* SHATTER any previous popular vote total for a President in history by over 10 MILLION VOTES, other than Trump's 74.2 Million in the same election which would have been the most popular votes for a President in history. This is because while Republicans all voted on one day, Democrats were canvassing streets and stuffing ballot boxes for at least a month before the election on top of whatever Democrats voted in person at the polling place on Election Day like we used to do before Covid.

In 2020, Democrats made these new rules and funded and organized the vast efforts to exploit those rules, completely fucking obliterating the off-guard Republicans.

In 2022, after two years of Republicans crying about it and powerless to change any of it in blue states and swing states where it was enabled, Democrats spent even more money and time exploiting those new rules while Republicans once again only spent one day voting, doomed to lose once again because of it. (The only exceptions being in parts of New York and California where Republicans DID spend time and money exploiting Democrat's new voting rules and won races they otherwise never would have won). IN OTHER WORDS... THE ONLY REASON THE REPUBLICANS REGAINED CONTROL OF THE HOUSE IN 2022 IS BECAUSE THEY CHEATED IN PARTS OF NEW YORK AND CALIFORNIA USING THE CHEATING APPARATUS DEMOCRATS MADE LEGALLY AVAILABLE TO THEM IN 2020 DURING COVID LOCKDOWNS.

Now that Republican politicians and strategists have acknowledged this and fully plan on embracing and exploiting it rather than trying to close it all back up, I don't want to hear you whining about it when it doesn't go your way, Ted.

6ix, I really am impressed by how insane you are and yet you can't see it about yourself. It is very similar to Arthur Fleck being blatantly insane and yet not understanding that was why he was an unsuccessful performer. Or the Russians being incapable of seeing why their country is unsuccessful compared to Canada or most countries in the EU. Insanity prevents them from understanding what is wrong with themselves and correcting their mistakes and prospering in the future. FYI to Signym, killing Ukrainians and destroying Ukrainian real estate is not on the pathway to a better life for Russians, but will keep Putin in power. Putin knows what will help himself, but Russians in general do not know Putin is leading them toward very unsuccessful lives.

I'm just paraphrasing the articles as they're being written by Republicans now.

Where up until the last election they were trying to fight these new covid induced cheat codes to the election, they've now decided to embrace them.

It worked for DeSantis. Florida elections are far from secure, but DeSantis blew Democrats out of the water even in Miami-Dade. It also worked in a fair amount of districts in New York and California and that's the only reason that Republicans took back the house.

Now that they know it works and they have plenty of data to pour over in those three states, just watch what happens when they draw up the plans to cheat in all the other Blue and Purple states where Democrats opened up this level of cheating and they take some of their campaign money out of advertising and instead use it to canvass neighborhoods and stuff ballot boxes the way that Democrats have been since 2020.

I'll state once again... I do not like the idea of Republicans harnessing this power either. That door should never have been opened for them by people with no foresight who were just looking for some immediate short-term wins.

And because Democrats still can't see it and will refuse to close up the cheating apperatus they set up post-Covid before their House majority ends, it will never be closed back up and this will be the new normal in our elections going forward. Once Republicans crush it, they're never going to close it up either.

By the way, here's a good graph that shows clearly what I'm talking about, and the opposite of what you're talking about re: Ukraine's "polarisation":

He should have pocketed his gains (Crimea) and cut his losses (the rest of Ukraine) back in 2014. Or failing that, he shouldn't have drank his own Kool-Aid, as you Americans say, about his invading troops being greeted as liberators. But he did, and here we are. He's blown it, and the only question is how much more suffering he can inflict on Ukrainians and Russians in his losing cause. And how much longer his fanboys and fangirls in the West will shamelessly support him even though they're taking L after L after L.

Plenty of ethnic Russians and Russian speakers in these parts of Ukraine (isn't that the basis of this illegal ongoing war?). Anyway, the polling shows they are more and more strongly anti-Russia. I did not plan for that.

You were here for them. We've argued about it before. It's nothing that I haven't been saying since after the 2020 elections.

I have no interest in going back to find them either. Stick around for another two years so I can watch you cry about the outcome.

That is, if you don't lose the password to this account too. Don't upgrade your smartphone again until after November of 2024, mkay?

But I will take this as a concession that your last accusation of me was bullshit since you completely dropped it in this reply.

Yes. But using the cheating apparatus that Democrats set up for them to exploit post-Covid in 2020.

I am serious. I don't want to see them do it, but in case you missed it with the media that you regularly consume, that's exactly what they seem to be embracing now instead of their previous claims that they want to close those loopholes. (As much as I dump on the terrible line-up of Democrats we've had in the last decade or so, I still hate Republicans, FYI).

This will not be good for any of us. I imagine the next step would be simply voting via smartphone as if we were watching American Idol. Elections would be meaningless by that point.

Quote:

Maybe. Maybe not. I'm not defecting from Trump to "Trump Lite" with DeSantis though. I like what DeSantis did in his state during Covid, but his foreign policy statements lead me to believe he might be anther Bushite NeoCon in sheeps clothing. And our current leaders from both parties seem to want to drive us into what might end up being the largest war in the lives of anybody living under 80 years old.

There's a LONG time until election day. It's impossible to even make any predictions that mean anything for the next 1 1/2 years. Anybody claiming to do so in the media is just doing the regular old click-baity thing they need to do to survive. Especially in this economy.

What If the U.S. Hadn’t Helped Ukraine?

Ukrainian resistance and American support prevented a wide range of horrors.

By Anne Applebaum

December 22, 2022, 8:35 AM ET

On the shortest day of the year, after 10 months of war, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, finally left his country and came to Washington to thank Americans for their support. He went to the White House, where he appeared at a press conference. He went to Congress, where he handed a Ukrainian flag, signed by the defenders of Bakhmut, to the vice president and House speaker. He congratulated all of us on our first, joint American-Ukrainian victory: “We defeated Russia in the battle for minds of the world.”

Nothing about this trip—not the applause, not the flag, not the speech—was inevitable. Zelensky’s very survival was not inevitable. Ukraine’s continued existence as a sovereign state was not inevitable either. Back in February, many considered these things to be improbable.

On the eve of the invasion, some American experts advised against offering military aid to Ukraine, on the grounds that the war was going to be over too quickly. Other Americans repeated Russian propaganda, questioning whether Ukraine deserved to exist or whether it deserved to be defended. Some American politicians echoed those views and indeed continue to do so. What if they had prevailed? What if a different president had been in the White House? What if a different president had been elected in Ukraine? Let’s imagine, just for a moment, a world without Ukrainian courage, or American and European weapons, or the unity and support of democracies around the world.

Had the Russian plan been carried out as it was written, Kyiv would have been conquered in just a few days. Zelensky, his wife, and his children would have been murdered by one of the hit squads that roamed the capital city. The Ukrainian state would have been taken over by the collaborators who had already chosen their Kyiv apartments. Then, city by city, region by region, the Russian army would have fought the remnants of the Ukrainian army until it finally conquered the entire country. Originally, the Russian general staff imagined that this victory would require six weeks.

Had all of that happened as planned, Ukraine would now be pockmarked with the concentration camps, torture chambers, and makeshift prisons that have been discovered in Bucha, Izyum, Kherson, and all the other territories temporarily occupied by Russia and liberated by the Ukrainian army. A generation of Ukrainian writers, artists, politicians, journalists, and civic leaders would already be buried in mass graves. Ukrainian books would have been removed from schools and libraries. The Ukrainian language would have been suppressed in all public spaces. Hundreds of thousands more Ukrainian children would have been kidnapped and transported to Russia or trafficked farther around the world.

Russian soldiers, strengthened by their stunning victory, would already be on the borders of Poland, setting up new command posts, digging new trenches. NATO would be in chaos; the entire alliance would be forced to spend billions to prepare for the inevitable invasion of Warsaw, Vilnius, or Berlin. Millions of Ukrainian refugees would be living in camps all across Europe, with no prospect of ever returning home; the tide of sympathy that originally greeted them would have ebbed long ago, the money would be running out, the backlash under way. The Moldovan economy would have collapsed entirely; a pro-Russian government in Moldova would perhaps already be planning to incorporate that country into the emerging Russian-Belarusian-Ukrainian federation that one Russian propagandist hailed, too early, on February 26.

This disaster would not have been confined to Europe. On the other side of the world, Chinese plans to invade Taiwan would be well under way, because Beijing would assume that an America unwilling to defend a European ally, and now totally bogged down in a long-term battle against an emboldened Russia, would never go out of its way to help an island in the Pacific. The Iranian mullahs, equally cheered by Russia’s success and Ukraine’s defeat, would have boldly announced that they had finally acquired nuclear weapons. From Venezuela to Zimbabwe to Myanmar, dictatorships around the world would have tightened their regimes and stepped up the persecution of their opponents, now certain that the old rules—the conventions on human rights and genocide, the laws of war, the taboo against changing borders by force—no longer applied. From Washington to London, from Tokyo to Canberra, the democratic world would be grimly facing up to its obsolescence.

But none of this happened. Because Zelensky stayed in Kyiv, declaring that he needed “ammunition, not a ride”; because Ukrainian soldiers repulsed the first Russian attack on their capital; because Ukrainian society pulled together to support its army; because Ukrainians at all levels were creative in their use of limited resources; because Ukrainian civilians were, and are, willing to endure terrible hardship; because of all of that, we are not living in that ugly, alternate reality.

Because they were inspired by those first weeks of Ukrainian courage, President Joe Biden and the U.S. Congress resisted the temptation of “America First” isolationism and rejected the cult of autocracy that now captivates a part of the American right. The leaders of Europe—with the sole exception of the Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orbán, one of the chief ideologues of that same cult—also resisted carefully targeted Russian disinformation and blackmail campaigns and agreed to support Ukraine with both military and humanitarian aid. People around the world saw the Ukrainians stand up to a brutal dictatorship, and volunteered their time and their money to help.

Because of everything that all of us did together, Kyiv still stands. Ukrainians still control most of Ukraine. The massacres, the executions, the mass violence planned by the Russians did not take place in most of Ukraine. The legend of Russia’s military prowess has been shattered. China and Iran are roiled by unhappiness and unrest. The democratic world did not collapse but has instead been strengthened. As the Ukrainian president said last night, we “succeeded in uniting the global community to protect freedom and international law.” Zelensky came to Washington to thank Americans on behalf of Ukraine, but in truth, it is we who should be thanking them.

For the heroism of its people, and for standing up to a bully

Picking The Economist’s country of the year is hard in normal times. Our writers and editors usually begin with a freewheeling debate in which they spar over the rival claims of half a dozen shortlisted nations. But this year, for the first time since we started naming countries of the year in 2013, the choice is obvious. It can only be Ukraine.

The honour normally goes to the country which, in our view, has improved the most in the previous 12 months. So Ukraine is in one sense an unusual choice, in that life for most Ukrainians has grown spectacularly worse since Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked invasion of their country in February. Multitudes have died. Cities have been smashed and charred. Millions have fled their homes. Ukraine’s economy has shrunk by about a third. Because of Russian attacks, many Ukrainians are shivering in the dark without electricity.

Yet Ukrainians have proved themselves this year. Four of their qualities stand out. The first is heroism. When the invasion began, most people thought Ukraine would be crushed by its much larger neighbour. Many would have understood if Ukraine’s defenders had run away. Mr Putin clearly expected the Ukrainian army to fold: his troops arrived with their dress uniforms ready for a victory parade but without nearly enough food.

The Ukrainians stood and fought. President Volodymyr Zelensky, spurning Western offers to spirit him out of Kyiv, supposedly snapped that he needed “ammunition, not a ride”. Ordinary Ukrainians showed similar mettle. Professors, plumbers and pop stars flocked to enlist, swapping comfortable beds for frosty foxholes and the risk of agonising death. In battle after battle they routed the Russians. In defending themselves against an aggressor who disputed their country’s right to exist as an independent state, they found a new sense of nationhood.

They showed ingenuity, too. They spotted their enemies’ weaknesses, blew up their fuel and ammunition supplies, and quickly learned how to use new Western-supplied weapons. They devolved decision-making to officers in the field, making their units more nimble and adaptable than the plodding, hierarchical Russians. They made deft use of help from friendly intelligence services, especially America’s, while their enemies fought half-blind, and sometimes gave away their own positions by making phone calls on open lines.

Ukrainians have also demonstrated resilience. When there is no tap water at home, they melt snow. When there is no electricity, they find heat and light in cafés with diesel generators, or sleep in the offices where they work, many of which now have bomb shelters and bottled water. The horrors Mr Putin keeps inflicting on them do not seem to have dented their morale.

And with a few exceptions, they have not answered war crimes with war crimes. Russian forces have routinely bombed civilians, tortured captives and plundered villages. By contrast, Russians are startled at how well they are treated as prisoners of war. This is largely because Ukraine is a democracy where human lives matter. It has its flaws, notably corruption, but its government and people had rejected Putinism even before the war, and now they reject it more strenuously.

By standing up to Russia’s despot, Ukrainians have protected their neighbours. Had he conquered Ukraine, he might have attacked Moldova or Georgia next, or menaced the Baltic states. Ukraine has shown that underdogs can stand up to bullies, even enormous ones. Underdog heroes and heroines do not merely surmount obstacles or defeat adversaries. The best and most moving beat a whole rotten system. They hold out hope that might — or reputation, power and influence — will not always prevail; that even if the rules are rigged, the game can still be won. They suggest life is not predetermined. They make their own fate.

It has thus been an inspiration not only to places with predatory neighbours, such as Taiwan, but also to oppressed people everywhere. Many tyrants broadcast big lies to justify their misdeeds, and impose their will through terror. Ukrainians have shown that lies can be exposed and terror can be resisted. Their struggle is far from over. But their example in 2022 was second to none. Slava Ukraini!

Each year The Economist picks a “country of the year”. The award goes not to the biggest, the richest or the happiest, but to the one that improved the most that year. Past winners have included Uzbekistan (for abolishing slavery), Colombia (for making peace) and Tunisia (for embracing democracy).

In 2021, some of the contestants for “country of the year” were:

Moldova, one of the poorest countries in Europe. It had long been a sink of Russian money-laundering. But in late 2020 it elected the graft-busting Maia Sandu as president and in 2021 it gave her party control of parliament.

Zambia reclaimed its democracy in 2021. In August its rulers tried to rig an election, but Zambians voted for Hakainde Hichilema, a liberal businessman, by such a wide margin that the rigging failed.

Lithuania stood up to authoritarian regimes in 2021. It gave sanctuary to dissidents from next-door Belarus and Russia, including the woman who probably won Belarus’s most recent election, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. The despot who stole that poll, Alexander Lukashenko -- who was visited by Putin 6 days ago -- tried to take revenge by forcing crowds of refugees across the Lithuanian border. Similarly, China is determined to bully Lithuania into submission. A Chinese newspaper mocked its size, likening it with great originality to “a mouse, or even a flea” because it defied the government in Beijing by letting Taiwan open a representative office in Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital.

I would certainly hope that they improved.

They've now gotten $113 Billion in gifts from US Taxpayers in 2022 alone. And this last $45 Billion gift comes at the cost of 19 Million Americans losing Medicaid in April of 2023.

It would be like giving Rookie of the Year status to a guy who was shot up with horse steroids all year by his coach while the media turned a blind eye to that and the corked bat that Sammy Sosa gave him, all while the stadium they played in crumbled around them and they couldn't afford to repair it because his salary ate up all the revenue.

It is states controlled by Republicans that will be kicking people off of Medicaid. Those states hated the idea that Covid was a public health emergency ("PHE" in the legal jargon) and hated that Congress forbid kicking people out of Medicaid during the PHE. That you would think this Medicaid eligibility (more legal jargon: "continuous enrollment requirement") was about lack of money, then blame Ukraine rather than Republican state officials administering Medicaid, is so very you, 6ix.

Each year The Economist picks a “country of the year”. The award goes not to the biggest, the richest or the happiest, but to the one that improved the most that year.

In the states controlled by Republicans, such as Texas, Republican state officials do what they can to exclude "undesirables", but in the original legislation there was an escape clause to thwart Republicans: the Federal government could, temporarily, override the local Republicans during a PHE (public health emergency). Local Republicans have always wanted to kick "undesirables" from Medicaid, but they also want to blame it on Ukraine or Democrats, not themselves and their own mean-spiritedness.

Yep. Merry Christmas, everyone! And fuck Ukraine.

Too early! Christmas is on January 7th. Some Ukrainians, who usually celebrate Christmas on January 7, as do the Russians, have changed their tradition as a reaction to Russia’s war.

Some Orthodox Ukrainians decided to observe the festival celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25 like members of Western Christian churches.

In October, the leadership of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which is not aligned with the Russian church and is one of the two branches of Orthodox Christianity in the country, agreed to allow the faithful to celebrate on December 25.

“What began on February 24, the full-scale invasion, is an awakening and an understanding that we can no longer be part of the Russian world,” Olena Paliy, a 33-year-old resident of Bobrytsia near Kyiv, told AP.

President Vladimir Putin says Russia’s offensive in Ukraine is being carried out to “unite the Russian people”. Putin used the concept of “historical Russia” to argue in an interview to be aired on Sunday that Ukrainians and Russians are one people. Russia’s “geopolitical opponents were aiming to tear apart Russia, the historical Russia”, Putin said in excerpts from a broadcast for Rossiya 1 national television.

“Divide and conquer, that’s what they have always sought to accomplish and are still seeking to do,” Putin said.

$8 trillion

Why is the U.S. not sending troops to Ukraine? Because sending troops to Afghanistan and Iraq caused over $2.2 trillion in obligations for veterans’ care over the next 30 years.

I won't get as big of a credit now that Democrats voted unanimously to remove the enhanced child tax credit with the recent Omnibus Bill, but what's left should pay for the increase in gasoline and home energy expenses under the Joe Biden* administration.

Russian-born historian Sergey Radchenko wrote about what Putin will do next: We need to steel ourselves for a painful struggle that may take years before it is resolved in one way or another. When Putin sees the world through our eyes, does he see unflinching conviction and a willingness to go to the brink? He probably doesn’t. That contributes to his confidence. A year on, there is light at the end of the tunnel. It’s Putin burning down his off-ramp as he prepares for a long, long war.
https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/what-will-putin-do-next/

Sergey Radchenko tweeted: “Russia is being turned into a garrison state, where people live short, nasty, brutish lives, and where all reality ultimately resolves itself into misery, tyranny and war.”
https://twitter.com/DrRadchenko/status/1605572912127176704

What will Putin do next? Sergey Radchenko puts himself in Putin’s position to predict his final move:

Russia is a nuclear power, and so I can’t lose. Would Hitler have used all the means at his disposal if he could avert Germany’s defeat? Yes, he would. That’s my premise, too. I will push forward, until I have no options left. With God’s help, I will win, but if I don’t, I am not averse to dying in glory. We all must die someday. Why not today? Why not in the service of the Great Russian Idea? That is what they don’t understand. They think I will flinch when faced with the choice: defeat (and my humiliation, and even ouster) or the end of civilisation. Had the end of civilisation ever looked more attractive?

But civilisation does not have to end – not at all. There is a long way to go from irradiated Ukraine to a global nuclear cataclysm. They – the Americans – will have to make the choice to escalate. Will they? I doubt it. They know that I know that in the big scheme of things, Ukraine is a sideshow. For them, that is. Not for me. For me it’s a matter of life and death. For now, I will keep the nuclear card in reserve. Some say it’s just an empty threat. Maybe it is and maybe it isn’t. Let’s find out when it comes to it.

Let’s be clear ok. The Democrats had a history making mid-term election. Trump has legal problems too numerous to list. The House Republicans can’t get their act together enough to elect a House Majority leader. And if they do, not only will he not have the power to get anything done. He’s going to be led around by the nose by the Republican looneys. That is going to be very entertaining and helpful to the Democrats in 2024.

Now, Biden wins again. He is signing a just passed 1.7 trillion-dollar Federal spending bill. A bill the house Republicans threatened the Senate Republicans not to pass. It includes 45 billion in aid to Ukraine and our NATO allies. 777.2 billion in nondefense discretionary spending. 858 billion in defense spending.

It includes The Electoral Count Reform Act. $47.5 billion for the National Institutes of Health, $9.2 billion for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and $950 million for the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. It has a $13.4 billion increase for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It has a boost of $28.5 billion for child nutrition programs.

New Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers they say would support over 11,000 additional low-income households, as well as a boost to maximum Pell Grant award.

Eight amendments adopted include proposals aimed at allowing proceeds from assets seized from sanctioned Russian oligarchs to be put toward Ukraine aid . Plus a measure aimed at strengthening protections for breastfeeding workers and another dealing with compensation for 9/11 victims.

Biden just keeps winning guys, so again I say let’s be clear. All the news is, has been, and is going to continue to be, happy news for me, not so much for you.

Sorry to tell you this, but kicking Russians' asses is a National priority. Not your priority but who the hell cares what your priority is, dear Putin lovers 6ix and Signym? In contrast to National priorities, groceries are a very local problem and so is health care. If your state legislature and next-door neighbors don't care whether you die, too bad for you. Move to where people care. Citizens of Trumptard-controlled states should look to their Trumptard legislature and governor for food and medicine. If your Trumptard government won't do what you want, vote them out of office because Congressional Democrats from rich California feel no legal or moral obligation to pay for angry poor white trash Trumptards' healthcare and food in Indiana, especially after Trumptards piss on California.

Democrats own this one. They had the power. They didn't need to open the doors for any states to cut people off of Medicaid in April of next year, but every single one of them voted for that this week.

19 Million American's will be thrown off of Medicaid in order to fund over $900 BILLION in military spending, including the $45 Billion going to Ukraine that alone could end world hunger for an entire year.

Merry Christmas, America!

Volodymyr Zelenskyy is the Grinch who stole your children's medical insurance in April.

Merry Christmas, Citizens of Earth!

Fuck your hunger. Democrats would rather watch you starve to death and team up with NeoCons to feed the war machine instead.

SECOND: Sorry to tell you this, but kicking Russians' asses is a National priority. Not your priority

Do you remember the ORIGINAL issue that the neocons used to wedge Ukrainian society apart and depose a democratically elected President?

A trade deal! With the EU! When Ukraine should have been focusing on the corruption which was draining their economy and distorting their society, western NGOs (funded in large part by the USA) hammered on this "trade deal")

Russia and Yanukovich were willing to negotiate a three-way deal between the EU and the EEAU, but the EU, propelled by "fuck the EU" Nuland, refused to negotiate.

The EU and USA-funded NGOs (AID, NED, etc) turned trade into a "civilizational choice between west and east". By constantly hammering on it, polarizing people and setting up snipers...BTW Yanukovich had agreed to all the protest demands including early elections before being violently deposed... the USA set Ukraine up for a civil war at best, and a war with Russia (which was our real intent) at worst.

And who the fuck gets anything out of ginning up this war except neocons and their lobbyists, corrupt Ukrainian oligarchs and the military industrial complex?

100,000 dead Ukrainian soldiers. Billions of American taxpayer dollars pumped into the pockets of corrupt politicians and oligarchs.

Yeah, Merry FUCKING Christmas to us.

Second didn't even know Ukraine was a country until February of this year.

Yeah. I knew what was going on and I remember.

The only reason Ukranians didn't fold in two weeks this year is because the $100 BILLION plus we've given them, only to see weapons systems we've gifted them turn up in the Middle East and Africa this year.

All Ukraine is, is the biggest money laundering scam the NeoCons/MIC/Democrats have ever inflicted upon our country and the world.

Fuck Ukraine. Fuck Joe Biden*. Fuck NeoCons. Fuck the War Machine. Fuck Democrats. And Fuck Second and Ted and all of their soy fueled pussy coward facsimiles out there for being so stupid and gargling the balls of the fucking Bushite NeoCon monsters they used to pretend to be against 20 years ago.
