Wherever possible there must be independent confirmation of the facts.

Encourage substantive debate on the evidence by knowledgeable proponents of all points of view.

Arguments from authority carry little weight (in science there are no "authorities").

Spin more than one hypothesis - don't simply run with the first idea that caught your fancy.

Try not to get overly attached to a hypothesis just because it's yours.

Quantify, wherever possible.

If there is a chain of argument every link in the chain must work.

Occam's razor - if there are two hypotheses that explain the data equally well choose the simpler.

Ask whether the hypothesis can, at least in principle, be falsified (shown to be false by some unambiguous test). In other words, it is testable? Can others duplicate the experiment and get the same result?

Good for you!

I finally got an explanation of the origin of "boxing day" in Britain: The day after Christmas, the deacons and/or priests open up the collection boxes for the poor, and people are supposed to donate. It has since taken on a more secular meaning. Something about shopping.

Well, I finally got my rear in gear and got outside to do some cleanup. (As I've mentioned b4, I'm a little distressed at the aches and pains that have derailed me. I looked over all of the projects that I've finished, and all of the physical ones were in the first roughly 7 months of the year, and it's been a bust ever since then.)

Dear daughter weed-torched some obnoxious weeds while I cleaned out one gutter and downspout that had been clogged in the last rain, in prep for the upcoming (light) rain.

I pulled some weeds and did some more weed-torching myself and the backyard looks overall better, altho it still needs a lot of work!

Yeah, I just needed some batteries for the mini-arcade game I bought for myself. I needed the walk after being in all day Christmas.

Boxing Day has. My brother back in the day used to be big on doing stupid things like lining up for hours at a local mall. He doesn't do things like that anymore and I never did.

It may be a soggy day here too. Or not. Maybe tomorrow?

There is something truly bonked about Wunderground forecasts when it comes to rain. Today, they predict "mostly cloudy" with a zero percent chance of rain and 0.46" rainfall accumulation. Tommorrow, they predict 50-100% chance of rain, showers, and a 0.33" accumulation.

How do you get 0.46" accumulation from zero pct chance and "partly cloud"? So the program that they use to predict "accumulation" is definitely NOT the program that they use to predict amount of cloudiness and chance of rain!

I am infinitely jealous of your weather right now Sigs.

Any "chance of rain" around here is just snow for the next few months.

I've got to get out of my funk and start working on the 1st floor remodel.

I'm going to leave all the existing cabinets in the kitchen since they were actually quality units except for the cheap countertop. I'm going to paint them all the same white enamel that I've used on the baseboard and door/window trim, and I'll replace all the 30+ year old hardware with some bright shiny silver colored hardware.

Not sure if I'm going to paint the insides of them though. What do you think? Should I paint inside the cabinets too?

What have you done today to earn your place in this crowded world? :)

That is definitely wonky. Even the weather site I go to on the internet is usually right. I only use it when I miss the weather on the news.

There might be a chance of rain tomorrow and then dry for a bit. Wednesday might see some snow with rain then rain for New Years.

re painting the insides of cabinets - unless you're absolutely CERTAIN that the paint will dry hard with no tack at all, and stay that way 100% of the time for eternity, i'd say no. or you might find your dishes fusing to the paint, and when you pull the dishes up, some paint will come with them.

or you could try milk paint w/out tung oil.

I didn't post much b/c my Christmas efforts were extremely paltry.

As for the rain - BLESSED RAIN! - my area got about half an inch. And yesterday evening, there was one really long peal of thunder, which happens rarely here.

All we need to do in terms of rain is do that half-inch again 48 more times and my area will be at normal.

Yeah... That's something to consider. (Anything that talks me out of it is probably a good thing).

It's super dry in the house during the winter with the heat on, and now that I use the A/C it's never uncomfortably humid either. But the jury is still out on how well my outdoor fixes will keep the water out of the house until we have another spring with terrible rain (which will probably be in a few months since the last 5 or 6 have gotten progressively worse each year).

I use a high quality primer and enamel paint, but I know exactly what you're talking about though since up at the halfway point of the walls in the basement the walls are deeper up top, making a "shelf" along the outside perimeter around the house. This was painted white before I moved in. It was high enough that it wasn't removed when I did the mold remediation, but it already looked pretty beat up and over the years I'd left various cans of paint up there (for months to years at a time) and the cans fused to the paint in a few places. I know from everything else I've done in the house so far that people who did work here before cut corners wherever they could and used crap materials all over the place, but I can't just assume this was the case with the trim paint. Even though they did the roofing themselves and did a terrible job at it, they did spring for top-shelf shingles.

I suppose if I still wanted to paint inside I could find a pattern-less covering for the bottoms and shelves that would match the colors of the walls or something? Something that would do the job but would be unlikely to be hated by the next buyer (like the horrible plaid stuff, and a few other mismatched patterns that are still on a few shelves 10 years after I bought the place).

Learned something new today after Googling "Milk Paint".

Neat.

KIKI: Only 1/2"??? I sure hope you've accumulated more by now!!

Either there's something truly hinky about my "rain gage" or something really wrong about the placement, but it's accumulated 2.25" since rain started last night.

We had one exceptionally strong band start off with a bang: lots of lightning and thunder and a deluge of rain, then another moderate band ... and then I fell asleep but when puppy woke me up (twice) for duty calls it was raining lightly each time*. Then it actually cleared up this AM but got seriously cloudy by 1PM, another band of rain, and then another more intense one with LOTS of lightning and thunder and more deluge that looked like it accumulated 1" in less than an hour.

I think that's it for this storm.

* I let the dog out before I go to bed to give her a potty break. Last night, I let her out THREE times, but each time she gets so distracted by tree rats or 'possums that she never DOES go. So dog bounces all over me to wake me up at 3 AM (almost 10 hours since she peed last) and I groggily put on my bathrobe and stagger to the kitchen door and open it. She takes one look at the rain and scoots back under the bedcovers! Then she wakes me... AGAIN ... at 5AM because this time she REALLY has to pee ... looks out the door is is turning away- again- when I pick her up and literally toss her outside, onto the dry-ish area under the house eaves. FINALLY she relieves herself. I'm relieved too because then I have a chance of getting more than 2 hours of contiguous sleep.

No, I just think patterns have changed. It used to be that rains came in from the SW and would hit the southern slopes of the San Gabriels, and dump their water there. Now they come in from the NW and I'm in the rain shadow.

Prolly something hinky with where I'm placing it, because looking at LADWP rain gage map, nobody near me got more than 1.6". FWIW most of the foothills got over 1.5" and Agoura got over 2".

https://dpw.lacounty.gov/wrd/rainfall/#

But you're right- the distribution is unusual. The high deserts (N side of the SGs and SBs) is dry, but the foothills didn't get more than anyone else. My guess is it came directly from the west.

Could be. Nextdoor is all abuzz about the lightning and thunder and somebody posted a picture of actual hail accumulation. We might have had a series of cloudbursts pass right over us.

This storm was the third-worst in terms of lightning and thunder I've experienced since moving here (the worst was a cell over a nearby city that had the meteorologists trying to figure out if it was a small tornado or a downburst) and the third-worst in terms of rapid rainfall (again, the first was that storm cell, and the second-worst was one that chased us off the tennis court).

Oh, btw Signy, on your map that big area outlined in red - that was the Bobcat fire. It started in Azusa and burned northward in a (on average) 17 miles wide swath of the foothills and the Angeles National Forest, clear up the San Gabriel mountain range, and all the way down the other side, and into the desert. It looks like it took out a quarter of the whole Angeles National Forest.

Yeah, that Bobcat Fire. Cute name, terrible event.

At least the ashes have been washed from the leaves, roofs, streets, sidewalks and solar panels. I was tracking ash in wherever I walked, and it kept being lofted up, swirling around and redepositing.

Plants are happy. New ones will grow, eventually. Curious thing about replanting trees in burned areas: they seldom take. Most areas seem to need some kind of progression. But there have been successful replantings in the San Gabriels, so at least ALL of the trees aren't gone!

No problem. I've become VERY accustomed to using that link during the spring unfortunately.

It's pretty insane how accurate they are too, down to the block by block view. (You can scroll the view down to your house if you haven't figured that out yet).

I remember fuming one day earlier this year when I had more water in the basement after I was in the middle of a half-mile radius dump of 2.5" of rain that would have all but completely missed me if I had lived only 1 mile away in literally any direction.

Sometimes it's hard to shake the feeling that you've got a rain cloud over your head when you've got topographical evidence backing you up.

No sense in not laughing about it.

Who knows... Maybe I fixed the issue?

Not really wanting to know the answer to that question is the only reason I'm not looking forward to winter ending.

What have you done today to earn your place in this crowded world? :)

No work for me today. Boss called and she isn't feeling good. So I am out for a walk in all the lovely rain in a bit.

Im glad she warned you away. The most contagious thing going around right now is Covid-19, so if she's got a virus it's unlikely to be anything else.

I'd say it's still very likely to be one of dozens of other things. Colds and the flu are still very much a thing. So is insomnia and food poisoning, as well as just a case of the seasonal "mehs". Depression in winter of 2020 is probably worse than it has ever been for a lot of people in Western culture who are too young to remember things like Nam.

I'm not telling anybody not to play it safe if that's how they want to roll, but let's not pretend that the lockdowns eradicated everything but the one thing we've supposedly been trying to prevent spreading.

I doubt it is depression Jack. Religious types don't get depressed as they have god on their side.

Really, I have no idea what is running through her head or what she and her husband have been discussing about her possible retirement next year.

And I know enough about depression this year Jack. It's bitten me enough times thank you very much.

Nah. Anybody who's religious that tells you that they don't get depressed are lying through their teeth. What a wonder drug God would be if that were actually the case though.

Everybody has problems. 2020 has just really sucked for everybody. Most churches around here have been closed for nearly 2 months again too, and Christmas celebrations were almost non-existent, so I'd imagine that feeling like God has your back is in pretty short supply these days.

You might want to put some feelers out for other avenues of employment if that's the case. When I was mentioning the "seasonal mehs" (SAD), I was kind of thinking that maybe with the way things have been their business has been hit particularly hard this year and if she's not feeling like working maybe she's just deciding it isn't worth it. Maybe they're planning their exit strategy.

I hear ya. Going through a bout of it myself at the moment. Trying to shake out of it, but this one's got a pretty good grip on me.

Hang in there.

Oh, I know and these two would never admit to that feeling anyways.

Churches across Canada I think have been closed longer than that. But in BC a couple in the Valley have been fined pretty heavy for breaking health orders.

There were a couple of virtual things that happened in BC and some drive through stuff. But yeah quiet.

I am thinking on things. He's completely retired now but she's still practicing medicine some, though she works mostly in clinics and that has taken a hit. She's on staff at a retirement home and does that remotely. She is into her early 70s now and I will just have to see what happens.

Yeah, I've beaten back several bouts of it this year. I'm crawling out of the Christmas blues right now. Almost there.

I think I'm crawling out of the "there was no Christmas this year and we've still got 3 miserable months of cold and snow" blues.

Got all my kitchen cabinet doors down and all the old hinges and hardware off of them today. Going to take this opportunity to go through everything still in the cabinets and get rid of anything I haven't used since the last de-hoard since I'm going to have to pack away everything that I don't use regularly until they're finished.

It turns out you can paint ceramic tile if you prepare it right beforehand and it actually looks really cool if you do it right. It's a good thing too, because I thought I would just remove them but the cabinets were built on top of them and there's no way to cleanly break the ones that are half covered. They're white tiles and I'm going to be painting the cabinets white. This is a kitchen, and not a hospital. I didn't want that much white in there. Now I don't have to. Going to make a bigger mess doing the kitchen now than I thought though. All of those tiles have to be power sanded.

What have you done today to earn your place in this crowded world? :)

Well, I gotta say, if Christmas was canceled, New Year's Eve looks like it's going full blast. Judging by the grocery store lines today, anyway. It looked like people were buying for the gorram millenium!

Fog and rain here right now. Massive snow and avalanche warnings about the back country. Hopefully people won't be stupid enough to try and go skiing, hiking or whatever. But you never know.

Tuck yourself in and be warm and cozy.

Think nice thoughts, and have pleasant dreams.

Happy New Year, BRENDA. May the new one be better to us all than the old one.

Sorry about the miscommunication in the other thread Brenda. Entirely my fault. I haven't been in a good headspace lately, and although it feels good to have been getting some things accomplished the last few days and getting back to solving problems I wasn't even aware I had in the first place, the SAD without Holiday relief is hitting me a lot harder than usual.

I've changed my signature...

Normally, I'd tell somebody to find something big to bounce on, and I didn't like the way you came at me with it, particularly on a thread where outside of a rare JSF appearance I get dumped on from every side as it is, but you are one of the few genuinely good people on this board and if my signature is making you uncomfortable, that is not my wish. I think you're taking it in the wrong context, and it certainly wasn't directed at you, but now that I know that it's bringing down your mood at a time where we both don't usually do as well as we do when it's warmer and sunny, I see no reason to keep using it.

My brother went through something very similar and equally undeserved, and though I don't believe that excuses somebody and gives them a life-long pass to not try to be a better person everyday, I can empathize with the situation and, from what I know of your online persona at least, on your worst day you don't contribute to the problems, which is a lot more than you could say for the rest of us.

FWIW, I haven't been doing all that much to earn my own place in this crowded world since it got cold out, and my negative output has certainly outweighed the positive...

Anyhow. You're the only person on these boards I'd change my signature for.

Sorry it was bringing you down.
