So, I've missed the news lately.

Did CA fall into the ocean? Are the earthquakes continuing?

It seems a bit weird. I've heard in the past that many small earthquakes help relieve the stress and strain of the faultlines. That these help reduce the likelihood of a large quake, instead of letting the pressure build so that a large quake is the only way to suddenly relieve the forces and tensions.

But now the argument is opposite?

Are these 2 conflicting theories? Or does nobody know what they are talking about?

Not yet!

Yes, but it's slowed down to about a tenth of what it was.

But now the argument is opposite?

In THIS particular instance, the quakes were far away from the San Andreas, both in surface distance and depth. They were EXTREMELY shallow, roughly 2-4km. In contrast, the last few major quakes (which were also not on the San Andreas) were:
1987 Whittier Narrows Magnitude 5.9 Depth 14km (8.7mi)
1994 Northridge Magnitude 6.7 Depth 18.20km (11.31mi )
1999 Hector Mine magnitude 7.1 Depth 20km (12 mi)

So in my opinion, that swarm is unrelated to the San Andreas.

Well, these are my completely layman's ideas:

I think it depends where those quakes are and where you're looking for stress. Some fault areas constantly move, so stress never builds up in those places. OTOH if the fault is locked up on either side of that movement along the fault (upstream/ downstream of a freely sliding section), then the stress is offloaded where the movement is, but transferred to where it's locked up.

I think of an area where there are many faults braiding around like an ice pack. If they're locked together, nothing moves. But when one or two start bobbing around, all of the sudden there's room for the rest to move, too.

I'm trying to learn a bunch of landscaping things all at the same time. One thing I found out is that field-grown plants are better than container-grown or bare-root. Their roots radiate out rather than circle around, and when they're cut out of the field with a large plug of dirt, those cut root tips are aimed to grown directly into the site dirt. For some reason, they also seem to be sturdier - maybe because they've been swaying in the breezes.

We pounded nails out of an old bookshelf that we're going to keep, took the old furniture out of the back bedroom where we had been painting and put it into the den that we had just cleared. Dear daughter and I need to clean the paint spots off the floor, and the room will be ready for our furniture.

I need to measure the old metal bedframe and see if it fits dear daughter's mattress. If it does, and the box springs also fit, then her bed will be ready to set up once we paint her room. (She envisions a very complicated five-color scheme, in stripes no less. It'll be an interesting paint job!)

But in the middle of fixing dinner the kitchen sink stopped up completely. It wasn't in the P-trap or anywhere near the cleanout, but far down the pipe where somebody had kludged a part of the waste line that doubled back on itself, making snaking it out totally impossible. So the sink is still mostly stopped up, and we're looking at replacing about 12' of waste line to join up smoothly with the main waste line. We've known for years that there was something hinky about that connection, I've never used the disposal to actually dispose of anything, just to chop up the bits and pieces from dishwashing (and I scrape my dishes thoroughly before washing.) because it's a complete pain in the ass to snake. Apparently the pipe is corroded because it doesn't drain completely - not so much of an issue because waste lines aren't pressurized - but the corrosion has formed bosses and lumps that trap waste and grow muck, which is why it stopped up.

I've had similar issues.
My prior homeowners were apparently a lot of hispanics - I kept getting their mail, and/or finding their mail scattered around the place. They seemed to do a bunch of things which I am told are common screw-ups for them. They put in a false ceiling in the bathroom, but with no exhaust fan, so it just got insanely muggy.

Now I've been dealing with the kitchen sink drain. They used PVC pipes for the drain. Under the floor (ceiling of the basement), there is about a 20 foot section without support. When I got there, the part which came down from the kitchen was and elbow joint which was about 8 inches lower than the other end of the basement section, where it needs to drain to. To fix that, I had pushed the pipe up through the floor, which made the works under the kitchen sink unlevel, so that the top of that pipe was almost the same height as the drain of the sinks. With the J-pipe in between the drains and that pipe, it made for slow draining. The way it was set up, I just conjured they had set it up right at one point, but some support had just failed or fell. But no, they never had set it up right at all. And I found that the 20 foot section, when it got a bunch of water in it, would just sag from the weight, like about another 6 inches - I have no idea how it ever emptied, other than maybe evaporation or suction from flow.

We've decided to have all of the old iron waste pipes replaced with ABS. I took pictures of some of the old pipes after they were removed from under the house (Nobody here has a basement. It's either slab or crawl space. We at least have a crawl space.) I'd say most of the 3" lines were significantly blocked by corrosion; one was almost corroded shut. The main drain was OK, my guess is that the corrosion reduced the diameter about 20% but there was still a lot of drainage left over.

The more we fix up the house, the more we discover whacky thingsabout it. Like, the pipe that started this odyssey - kitchen drain - is actually unreachable: The plumbers found TWO footings under that end of the house about 2' apart, and the pipe is betweem the two.

I was wondering how things were going. I think you'll be much happier when the bad drain line is replaced with something better! You'll know for a fact that it'll be OK for a long time.

FWIW, in my place, many of the major, multi-thousands of dollars worth of problems are obvious! And then, there's the many things I haven't looked into yet ... like my main line. So I hope you're reassured enough - it's not just you. Many people are in the same boat!

Rained last night. We need the rain up here as there are fires burning up the Sunshine coast again. Little town called Pender Harbour is on evac. They've got one right on their doorstep.

There were also listed multiple thunder storms for yesterday across the province. Bad news as some lighting was predicted as well.

Just have to wait and see. His friend that I spoke to said that he is lucid but doesn't remember the accident. Normal for a head trauma. He's had a CT scan and been x-rayed. No broken bones. He was bleeding from one of his ears. He was hit on the left side.

There were lots of witnesses so hopefully the cops will get the guy. His friend has helped people in this situation before and so he is going to help my brother with whatever he needs doing. Figures he will be in hospital for a couple of days at least.

Well, the plumbing emergency and all of the additional work is done. Damn, those guys work hard!

Meanwhile, I'm still coughing and wheezing and feeling tired. I went to see my doctor for a pre-surgical physical (sinus surgery again) but she can't clear me for surgery because of pleural "rubbing" sounds (pleurisy) and very "bronchial" sounds (possible bronchitis)

So I came home with a fistful of meds (azithromycin, prednisolone, something else...) and instructions to go back in a week and see if they did any good.

Sigh.
Cough!

BRENDA

Found two more pictures to hang that I did and blew out my left shoulder. Bunch of things to donate donate and 2 pieces of dead electronics. Books too that are ready for me to reorganize a book shelf.

ETA Am now sitting down with a chocolate croissant for a well deserved rest.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Recovery is almost never a straight line. It's usually three steps forward and one (or two and occasionally four!) steps back. As long as over the course of several days he seems to be making progress, that's good.

I have my fingers crossed that he will continue to get better.

As an aside, if the police had to "find" the guy that hit him, it sounds like a "hit and run". Maybe he was drunk at the time and needed a few hours to burn thru the alcohol, and maybe the RCMP (or whoever is handling the investigation) can't prove drunk driving so long after the fact, but he could be in a bunch of trouble.
