I know what you mean SIX. My hands have a few scars on them. One hand has a burn scar on it. Pinky finger has a scar from when some skin got taken off in the cold. Got the tip of a finger caught in the door jam when I was in elementary school. No damage to the bone but the tip had to be stitched together. Then after it was all nicely healed, I hit with a hammer and broke open one side. You can definitely see the scar on that finger.

It's a good thing they heal on their own, or we'd be walking around with two bloody stumps by now.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Speaking of burn scars - there was one summer day when I had walked to my grandmother's house to mow her lawn. When I got back my mom had been doing some ironing at the time (remember irons?) but was taking a break, and I was chatting with her and my oldest sister about how was grandma doing - but they were both goggling at me until one of them said - YOUR ELBOW - which was apparently smoking. I had backed my elbow into the iron, but it was so hot I didn't feel it. (I've read that with really hot burns the nerve ends get instantly fried before they can send their signal.) That's a scar that I still have.

Dude! You're on fire!

I woke up one morning after having an ancient heating pad that is missing the bag on my back all night. I used a towel to cover it and thought I was safe because I almost never move while sleeping and wake up on my back just as I went to sleep.

Not that night. I had blisters all over my lower back after I somehow moved it all and exposed the full heat of the unit on my back for who knows how many hours.

I'm not exactly a heavy sleeper, so imagine my surprise. This was well after I'd quit drinking too.

Been busting butt (as much as I can anyway) over the past few days. The heavenly bamboo is finally as dug out as I'm going to dig it up, and the house had it's every-two-week cleaning. Dog has had her bath, all of the "daily" stuff is done, and got jump ahead on the cooking. Progress is being made on multiple fronts.

I actually started dusting the dining room table in prep for my belated "end of year filing", which I'm going to start tomorrow, now that the indoors in liveable again.

Good for you.

I've been doing literally nothing. Had some things happen that don't directly effect me and I don't want to get into that are weighing pretty heavy on my mind, then a few more unexpected surprises popped up.

It's ruts lie these that are the reason you shouldn't feel bad when I'm on fire. I'll get back on the horse, but sometimes it takes longer than others.

At least I got two more full cans of wood chips out to the trash last week, otherwise I'd have felt twice as bad about how the week went. If I don't get off my ass today, I'm going to miss my best opportunity to fill up two more.

Tree people still haven't fixed the lawn damage, but they haven't billed me yet either so not going to worry about it until I need to worry about it.

Was wondering why you haven't posted.

Sometimes, when faced with what seems like an insurmountable problem, I get stuck too, even if it's a problem I can't do much about and doesn't directly affect me in any way.

Well... one of them just indirectly effects me and is nothing I can do anything about and I just hope it works out for them.

The other one directly effects me and may well be something I can't do anything about either. That in and of itself is just life and can be dealt with, but unfortunately it's potentially such a large problem that it is making me question whether or not things I've been doing and plan to do in the future are moot at this point.

I don't mind challenges, which is a good thing because I've given myself no shortages of them to overcome, but it's the hopeless situations that I'm not all that fond of.

That feeling like your reward for trying to do things right is just being shit on even more, and instead of being pushed back to square one, you've just been bumped off the cliff and you're hanging on long enough to decide whether it's even safe to climb back up it or if you're better off just letting go and crossing your fingers that it will be a gentle landing.

Mine was from cooking. Something splashed out of a pan and landed on my hand. I didn't notice it for a minute till I washed my hand off. No serious damage though. Just one round spot on my left hand.

well, since you just visited your bro and you kinda stalled out after that, and it's no secret that you planned on selling your place and getting a smaller one near him so you could "take care" of him (relieving your dad's mind about what's going to happen to him) my guess is that you found your brother in worse shape than you expected.

So, there goes all of your plans!

But, yanno, you can STILL sell your place and hopefully replenish your bank account, and find a smaller place more suitable to your lifestyle and closer to your brother. The one thing you CAN'T do, and can't expect to do, is "take care" of him unless he wants to take care of himself. All you can do is be there to pick up the pieces and remind him that he's making terrible choices. Been there myself. I wound having a very distinct emotional break from my mom bc she played the alcoholic self-injurious card a few times too often and I realized that she was beyong my effort, so I stopped caring what she did. I ran away, in essence. But I could have limited my goal to just "picking up the pieces" and reminding her of her terrible choices. THAT would have been more doable!

You'll have to find a different goal worthy of your intelligence and prodigious work output. It will come to you, of that I have no doubt.

Well you're not wrong about the first half of the problems. But the rest a a tad closer to home and not involving my brother. Just feels like you can't catch a break sometimes.

I worked outside most of the day today, which really alleviates a lot of stress and clears the mind a bit. Hopefully I can get back to working without worrying about the things that are out of my control, and also hopefully ignoring my spidey sense telling me that something catastrophic is about to happen is the right choice in the mean time. It's not something I usually do, but this house has given me full blown PTSD and I don't think I can even assess anything objectively anymore.

Got the last two trash cans full of wood chips. I won't need to do that anymore at least. I've got only two very well groomed mounds where the trees used to be. Just got to play the waiting game and let them sink now before I can finish the work. Could be years...

I also cleaned up all of the lawn debris in both the front and back yard.

I wanted to start working on filling the pits and holes that I'm responsible for, but I'm beat and I ran out of sunlight anyhow. There should be some reasonably warm days without rain this week, so hopefully it's not too wet after it rains tomorrow and I can get to working on that and figuring out when the tree people are coming back to fix the mess they are responsible for.

Back from my walk on a mostly bright day. Got the kitchen garbage down when I got back. Put it off from yesterday as I was tired and didn't feel like it.

See the gate is down on the parking garage. There has been some trouble with bike theft and homeless sleeping in there.

Brenda - I thought your province made a big effort to house the homeless ... ?

I imagine it has a far greater homeless population than most other provinces, because the weather is more tolerable. I think being homeless - in Albert, or Saskatchewan, or even Quebec, as examples - would be far more dire, especially in winter.

It is making a big effort but a every city has its problems.

And you are right a lot of people come to BC from Alberta and east to get away from the rough winters. But with climate change even temperate BC is having some rough winters.

Had a return visit from the moles to handle today. I was outside just yesterday and the run from my driveway all along the side of my house and the back of the house wasn't there before, so this was fresh.

Poisoning the moles wasn't on the agenda today, but nothing like having a fresh track to work with.

Went next door and let the neighbors know to keep their kids inside for a while since this is some seriously toxic shit, then I let loose M-80 sized blocks of poison that would kill a horse and smoked out all the tunnels.

I'm not playing around anymore. I went scorched earth today. If nothing grows on this property for 1000 years, so be it.

Started collecting all the tax papers and sorting out end-of-year filing with dear daughter. When she has straightforward instructions, she's a giant help! I set out little "placecards" for "bank", "health insurance", "other insurance" "utilities" "things" and "miscellaneous" and we've taken up the whole dining room table. Got partway thru sorting the piles even further.

But ran into a bit of a snag with the tax papers. Most years, we're better off taking standard deduction but THIS year we may wind up being better off itemizing. But it will take a long trip thru the health insurance and medical bill papers just to be able to figure out whether we should go that route or not.

Oh, well, so be it.

At least, while sorting out the "THIS IS NOT A BILL" papers from Medicare I found the statement of payment (EOB) that the medigap insurance has been bugging me for for over six months. Now that the medigap insurance has my CORRECT info entered (they typoed my ID# off by one) and the Medicare EOB is available the doctor's office can finally get their second payment.

Sigh.

Our health insurance system and our tax system are both GIANT clusterfucks, unnecssarily complicated by wealthy special interests who want to make their slice of the pie bigger. BRENDA, thank your lucky stars you have single payer because insurances aren't fighting each other over which pocket the money is coming from, and the billing office doesn't have a couple of dozen different rates based on which insurance they're dealing with.

That's the plan. I've made it a point not to ignore issues to a fault since I stopped drinking. But this one Is something I likely couldn't remedy even if I did figure out what is causing it, and at the end of the day it's probably not nearly as bad as I imagine it is. At least, if I want to function properly now that's what I've made up my mind I'm going to do for now.

I'll worry about it when and if I ever need to worry about it.

Can't say for sure I killed those fucking moles yesterday, but there is zero new activity after putting enough poison in the tunnels to kill an elephant.

That could be good news since the displacement from the tunnels that were made in the previous 24 hours were worse than any I'd ever seen to that point.

I used up all of the "sod" that I had rolled up from the stuff I cut off the driveway when I edged it last year before I repaired and resurfaced it. It takes way more time than it's probably worth to beat out all of the dirt from them, but they're gone now and not looking like hillbilly trash on the side of my house. I still have quite a few ruts to fill, but I do have a huge wagon full of dirt I got from my neighbor last year that I'm going to use next. He was hoping I'd be done with the wagon when he gets back from a vacation next week anyhow, so it's really good timing.

Unfortunately, it's going to rain the next few days. But luckily I was able to work outside all day today even though we had a really good chance of rain all day and it was cold, windy and dark outside.

Think I'll get back to kitchen work tomorrow.

Damn... just checked the weather. Looks like we're getting 1 1/2 inches of rain tomorrow.

Might be too wet to work the next day even though it won't be raining. It's still too cold to really dry anything out after a rain like that.

Hopefully my neighbor doesn't need the wagon as soon as he gets home or I'll have to figure out what to do with the dirt if I can't get it out there right away.

Think I'm going to cook and eat early. Don't think I'll be up too long.

I actually did my first workout for a while today. I've been active working on the house all winter, but that's not the same as an actual workout. 2 days working outside in cool had me more winded than I'm comfortable with. Going to have to step up my game if I'm going to last very long once we start hitting the 80's and 90's. I got about 10 winter lbs I could stand to lose.

Nothing too serious yet. Just enough to get the blood flowing. Slow and steady wins the race. Gotta be tight and chiseled when I work outside without my shirt on.

Sorry to hear about the rain. But ... yanno... your particular area got deluged a few times when it wasn't supposed to. Maybe the rain will miss your neighborhood this time?

Speaking of rain ...

The northern Sierra snowpack is at 72% of yearly total, central Sierran snowpack at 68%. Southern Sierra a measly 42%.

Not a banner year for rainfall, but not devasating either.

It looks like winter and spring are over and summer is here. NOT my favorite season! Starting Saturday, the average hi temps for the forseeable future (thru next Saturday) are going to average around 82. :-( Music to some people's ears, not to mine.

Sorry to hear about the rain. But ... yanno... your particular area got deluged a few times when it wasn't supposed to. Maybe the rain will miss your neighborhood this time?

fingers crossed

Won't be the end of the world if we get it. In fact, I'm in a lot of trouble if I get even a drop of rain in my basement with only 2", if the last 5 springs are anything to go by. Should be a good preliminary test of the new systems in place.

Wish I'd gone over and introduced myself to the people who bought the house behind me when they were out on the driveway earlier, but I wanted to get my work done before it rained (which I did, with plenty of time to spare). Not sure if they bought for themselves or of they're going to flip it. Either way, they've got tons of work ahead of them and I wish them well. I think finally having somebody fix that garage and tear out the rotten fence (and hopefully put up a new one) will do wonders for my own house value when it comes time to sell.

The only bad news is that it's another owner in their 30's. I'm surrounded by them now.

Don't get me wrong. They're not rowdy or they don't have tons of shit on the lawn all hoarder style or anything, but they don't exactly care much for doing chores.

Now normally I wouldn't let this bother me, but it's freakin' Animal Planet around here, and I just discovered that the moles tore up an entire strip of my lawn on my side of my neighbor's chain link fence since he never edges the grass there and there is about 4 feet tall grass they were burrowing down into because he's not taking care of business. I showed him today that he's going to lose his fence because the moles have now unearthed and exposed the first three posts, concrete and all. He seems completely unconcerned about it.

His porch they just installed 6 or so years ago is rotting so bad I wouldn't want my wife and kids walking on it, since he painted it with the wrong paint for the job and zero primer underneath and never did anything about it when it all flaked off. Later on today I noticed that because of animal burrowing underneath his porch, there is a two feet section in the center of the house that has a 6 inch drop where water is just going to pool and leak into their basement this year.

I'm not even going to tell him about any of it anymore since he never does anything about any of it. But he better damn well start edging that grass on that fence since my lawn is getting ripped up because of his laziness.

But at least his garage is still standing. It wouldn't be after the 40" we had with zero melt had I not jacked up the back corner last year. Best $25 dollar gift card they ever bought. Especially since I bought $10 of parts.

Interesting story or rather cute story on the National news tonight. Conservation officers had to be called in to get a beaver out of a Toronto transit station. They don't know how it got in and was just wandering around. Reporter remarked, "They didn't know if he paid his nickel fare either."

Officers got the beaver and took him out, returning him to a local river.

Only in Canada, eh.

Last night was rather uneventful. Good news is no water in the basement. Bad news is there was only .40 inches of rain instead of 2 inches, so not really a good test.

On and off rain for the next two days, and it won't be warm enough to really dry anything for a while. Going to have to move operations back inside for the time being.

You must have beavers down there. Guess they just don't wander too far off their track. Toronto is largest city in Canada, so it has its share of critters getting into places they don't belong.

The internet says they should be around here. But I've always lived very near to big cities like Chicago and Milwaukee. I'm over 40 years old and have never actually seen a live beaver in my life, except I'm sure I must have seen one in a zoo when I was a kid if they've got any in there.

We don't have cute beavers by me. I recently was talking with city workers over the last few weeks. There's a major problem with our ditch that diverts all the flood water. It's not known yet whether it was caused by the muskrats or if the muskrats moved in after the problem got out of hand.

I noticed a house far down across the ditch that had a fence that was collapsing last year. At the time, of course, I just chalked it up to them being as disgusting as the guy who lived behind me and let his fence get destroyed, but now every fence over there is falling in. That ditch is ready to collapse, and these things are living all over inside of it...

It's the beaver's ugly cousin with it's scaly tail.

It seems that the muskrats are doing to the ditch what the moles are trying to do to my house.

I'm going to be in quite a lot of trouble if that ditch isn't fixed.

I'm not sure if I've seen a beaver in the wild. There is a slim chance I did when I was a kid. We lived out in the Fraser Valley when I was 7years old. Property across the road from our house got a lot of water and I think a beaver did build a small dam. This allowed the water to form a pond that froze in the winter. I remember going ice skating there.

Think there is muskrat up here in BC but I've never seen one.

Huh. Guess the city has some work to do to get rid of the muskrats and fix the problem.

With Spring being here now in BC, I suppose the local news will be covering bear stories. We've got brown and black bears. Some areas have even had cougars walking right around houses, attacking small dogs.

I sure hope they do it sooner than later. But that's going to be a costly bill to the city, particularly if they end up having to replace everybody's fences on that side. Somebody should have done something about it sooner for sure. The problem wasn't nearly as bad last year. Fortunately, I'm far enough away that the ditch isn't adding to my particular set of problems now. But if it actually collapses and ceases to work, I'm on the list of property owners who are going to be screwed first.

My buddy and his fiencee made a surprise visit today. Seems they're actually looking at property in my area and just looked at a house within a mile from my place. I'd love if they ended up fleeing Illinois taxes and living in my hood.

Had to apologize for the mess since it looks like a bomb hit the place with the kitchen work going on, but she really loved what I've done on the 2nd floor so far and envies my big front lawn despite the bare dirt I had to fill in after the trees came down.

FWIW I've seen both beavers and muskrats in the wild. Not here but back in WNY where I'm from. The last time I visited we all went to a small nature preserve that has a small beaver pond, and we saw the beavers come out and sit uptop their lodge and swim in the water. I think we were pretty lucky to see them.

A few miles away is a creek. It's way too big for a beaver dam (here in SoCal it'd probably be called a river and make in on a map) so I think that's why there were no beavers, but there were muskrats ambling along through the fields there.

That midgey-looking dam in the creek is well over 15' tall, but in spring the creek becomes a deep, raging torrent.

Here's a downstream picture where the creek is at a low point in fall.

Pretty.

We've got places like that which aren't too far a drive away from where I am, but it's far too built up here to have that kind of wildlife. Or at least it should be if the city wasn't sleeping at the wheel.

I'm going to get in touch with a lawyer that a woman who came to give me a quote on the trees told me about. I might already have a case against the city for damage that has happened since I've been here, but I'd really like to know that I'll have some protections if the ditch collapses. I can probably even hit the state up for damages since they decided to start adding more to the property taxes for it around 5 years ago.

There was another year I went back to visit and we heard that that particular creek was flooding at an all-time high. So OF COURSE we drove out there to see! even thought it was already dark out. We were standing on the bridge (briefly) and the water was a foot from the bottom. And every time a huge (think 20'x20'x20') chunk of ice or tree log went grinding under you could feel the bridge shake.

What some people won't do for excitement!

I got some important things finished yesterday, so today I start the week with a much lighter heart. I still have a crap-ton to catch up on from the days when I was still working and overwhelmed by pain to the point of incapacity, but the big stuff I've been working on is (mostly) done.

Today I've just got my 'daily' tasks on my list, plus grocery shopping, and shopping for my next recipe - which is vegetable-filled bbq turkey meatloaf. It's an experiment. I THINK I've learned a few things from my previous versions, like ... ketchup isn't really a good source of tomato flavor - it kind of disappears. So I'm going to be using tomato paste instead. And ketchup isn't really a good source of sweetness either, so I'll be using cooked, mashed sweet potato (partly as a panade) and a bit of sugar. And hot sauce isn't a good source of heat because the heat kind of cooks away, so I'll be using cayenne pepper. And fresh garlic isn't reliable for garlic flavor, so even though I'll put it in for its nutritional properties, for flavor I'm going to rely on garlic powder.

The other thing I did yesterday was order ingredients to make (low sodium, aluminum-free, non-GMO, and organic) home-made double-acting baking powder. I'm going to go back to trying to figure out how to make curry-spiced biscuits filled with chicken and vegetable.

I should probably put this is the recipe thread, but I'm lazy today.

Wild weather here a while ago. Dark clouds rolled in then heavy rain which turned into heavy hail which went back to rain then a light rain. This was also accompanied by wind which was blowing the trees around. Wind and rain both stopped for now.

Off to get my supper.
