BRENDA

Not worried about being attacked outside my apartment SIX.

Already dealt with a stressed out lab technician this morning and a snarky manager from a local fast food place that is contemplating reopening.

Yeah, it is good. I hate vampires.

Should be next Monday. I will drop by my doc's office tomorrow and make an appointment to go in and see her about that as well as get refills for my meds.

Me too.

It shouldn't get too hot in my house tomorrow. It usually takes a day or two of hot weather and warm nights to really heat up. I'll have it keeping the humidity out for sure though.

Any luck figuring out how that skunk got in?

A little stiff like always, but so far, vastly improved from when I woke up really jacked-up a few days ago. Thanks for asking!

So far the house is staying cool(ish) because it's cooling down nicely at night and the structure as well as the ground haven't heated up yet. In the PM when the ocean breeze kicks in - it makes it all the way here to the foothills! - I open up the doors and windows, and in the AM I close them back up. I'm glad I had those 2 (security) screen doors put in! which helps to create a nice cross breeze as well. This upcoming summer will be the first summer I test them out both together since I had the second screen door put in only later last summer.

I have a very simple but tasty recipe, makes 12 servings:
3.5lbs of ground pork made into 24 small meatballs and baked (you can always just brown it loose), with the juice drained off, then defatted, and returned. If your ground pork is like this new brand I tried out, you'll lose at least a pound of fat. (I may just buy a pork shoulder and have it trimmed and ground instead of getting that pre-ground type.)
1.5 lbs dried white beans (I used navy because that's what I had, but any white bean will do. My personal favorite so far is great northern.), cleaned, rinsed, and soaked in just regular water - no salt of anything - at least a full 24 hours at room temperature, or up to 36 (that I know of). (A good long pre-soak makes beans uniformly cooked and smooth on the inside and keeps the skins intact. Some beans become soft and creamy on the inside while others stay a bit firmer, depending on the type of bean. But the long pre-soak works for every kind of bean I've tried it with. And my experience is you can't oversoak beans. It's OK if they release air and get a few bubbles on the water at room temps. And if you're not ready to cook them, you can move them to the frig for 3 days until you cook them.)
Into a large pot add the beans AND soaking water, a pound of chopped onion, the meatballs/ ground meat and their defatted juice, 2 large bay leaves, and a mere half cup of tomato juice (or 1 medium tomato, blendered - the tomato adds a hint of umami but you don't want to taste it, which is why there's so little in the recipe). Cook covered at 350F till the beans are done, and portion out to serve or freeze.

The Canadian news has covered 3 protests in Canada 1 in Vancouver that happened today. Was quiet and 1 in Victoria also quiet. 1 in Toronto after an incident there, a young woman fell from her apartment balcony and it is being investigated. Nothing happened at that one. There was 1 in Montreal, Sunday. There was some windows broken, small fires and I think some stuff stolen. 11 people arrested.

The one in Victoria wasn't really covered as it just popped up and was only mentioned by another reporter after covering Dr. Henry talking about schools reopening in BC.

I don't know about now, but overall your government has a long history of caring about its citizens, what with universal healthcare, low-cost post-high-school education, well-supported public transport, and other public services. People up there don't have their backs to the wall quite like here. The well-off aren't quite so obscenely well-off, and the desperate aren't quite so hungry and desperate.

Yes, we have but big brother to the south has been late to help out through 2 world wars then tends to grab all the credit. Your military spending has also led to... I don't want to cause a row in here Jack. As I said before Canada's population and economy won't lend to big military spending. So we don't.

You mentioned minorities to me the other day Jack and you forget technically I am a minority. In Canada I and my family going back to my dad's mother are Metis which means Indian and French blood. The only thing that stops us from claiming any sort of status in regard to that was the fact that my grandmother was an American.

It does but big cities in Canada do have big to hug homeless problems. Reserves can be in shoddy shape all across country with high rates of alcoholism and other substance abuses on them.

I just want to point out that if you want to see homelessness, you should come here to SoCal. Canada isn't nirvana, but it sure isn't the US either!

Los Angeles County has about 60,000 homeless people out of a population of about 10M. The greater Vancouver area has about 2,200 homeless people out of a population of 2.5M. So Los Angeles County has about 7X more homeless people on a per-person basis. And that's not counting the other counties is SoCal!

I believe that Vancouver might have a lot more homeless people than elsewhere in Canada, because it has a mild climate (for Canada, that is ... nowhere in Canada is nearly as balmy as SoCal), astronomically expensive housing (and congratulations!! again on your new place), and sadly a drug problem as the port is a major drug import point.

I'm sorry I can't help with your twitter question, as I've never been a twitter user.

Very true Kiki. Canada is not perfect but right now, I am very glad not to be down in the US.

Thank you for the numbers, I didn't know how they compared.

And you are right. Homeless from the rest of Canada do flock to the Lower Mainland (Vancouver area) because of the mild climate though the climate in the winter is slowly changing. Yes, the housing prices are out of control for apartment living. Makes things very hard.
Thanks but without help I would still be on the BC Housing list, I say probably.
True again. RCMP do make major busts every so often of drugs coming in. And Vancouver city does work on the drug and overdose issues.

Don't worry about the Twitter thing. I will see if I can sort it out.

A/C worked great today and kept the whole house dehumidified and comfortable, even though it was 92 and gross outside.

I had it on for 7 straight hours. Not something I want to do all the time, but it won't get this hot all the time either. It maintained an even temp 20+ below the temp outside all day long, on every level of the house. Though it's dropped 9 degrees since I turned it off, it's only increased 1 degree inside, and tonight it will go lower than the current temp inside, so it shouldn't rise much.

Looking forward to testing out day two. I'm also going to do some experimenting with what is the best way to use it. The "ECO" setting won't be helpful since it bases its behavior on the ambient temperature of the room it is installed in and would not work on the whole house like it did today. However, from what I read online today about window units they don't maintain maximum efficiency and effectiveness if left on for a long straight time and you benefit from cycling the time it is on over a longer period in the day.

There is a timer function that I will have to learn how to use. That might be the best solution.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I've got to remember that I did this for the house first, and my own comfort is just the side benefit.

If you remember, I was using that furnace blower as a whole house fan last summer. It did the trick well enough and made the house moderately comfortable, but it did nothing to reduce the humidity at all and I'd leave that thing on all night, sometimes over 10 hours per day. And by the end of the day I'd still be reaching the mid to high 80's at the 2nd floor with temps over 100 in the attic and have to do it all again the following night. This shouldn't cost too much more than the $30 or so dollars extra per month to run... maybe double at worst if I'm not doing anything at all to try to be conservative with it.

I don't think it will use that much though once I learn the best way to use it, and today was a great test at 92 degrees. Got some mid-80's days coming before the 70's return, so I should be able to get a way with less than 7 hours on most days.

It's been off for 3 hours now and although it's raised 2 degrees at the 2nd floor, it feels downright chilly in my house without my shirt on and I don't need to have the boxfan on tonight when I'm sleeping (and obviously didn't need to have it on at all during the day either). And it shouldn't get any higher now since the inside and outside temps are pretty much the same and it's still supposed to go down 5 more degrees overnight.

The way I figure it, I cut $30 a month from my cable bill, and that's year round. I can put that toward the A/C in the summer and keeping the house a degree or two warmer in the winter.

I also drained out my water heater that was making a lot of knocking noises when I found out that was sediment buildup that was making it much less efficient. I used that opportunity to adjust the heat down on it because if you didn't use both the hot and cold knob together in the bathroom sink you would literally burn your hands. Between those two things I barely ever hear the heater go off anymore if I'm not showering or doing laundry, and it used to go off all the time. To be fair though, without the loud knocking that I could hear from the 2nd floor, I can't be too sure it's still not going off a lot.

It will be interesting to see my next energy bill for sure.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

6:00AM by me and it's the same temp that it was last night before I went to sleep. 75 degrees. No fan necessary last night, very cool and dry and comfortable.

Only a high of 81 today. I probably wouldn't need to use it at all today.

I am going to do a little experiment though. It's only 70 out right now. I'm going back to sleep for a few, so I'm just putting it on now and I'll turn it off when I wake up. I want to see how well it does when it's not fighting the baking sun at the hottest point of the day when the sun isn't beating down on the roof. I'm guessing the cold will probably wake me up.

The attic is very dry and comfortable right now too. I really should get a few dollar store thermometers to know exactly what my temps are around my house. It's probably 10 degrees warmer up here, but it must be pretty dry because it doesn't feel hot when you're up there and I don't get sweaty at all. Not bad considering how hot it got up there early in the day before the A/C was even on and it reached over 90 yesterday. Up until just 5 minutes ago the door to the attic wasn't open at all either.

Just to give you an idea of our electric rates, if we were to keep a drafty old house of about your house's size comfortable by running a room A/C for seven hours straight, let's say (for the sake of argument) all day, every day, for a month .... one ton is approx 12,000 BTU .... calculating ... my guess is that we would be facing a bill somewhere north of $550 at the end of the month.

What they have here is TOU (Time of use) charges, where they charge you more for "peak" usage hours (between 2Pm and 6PM IIRC) and the maximum charge is almost $0.30/KWH.

We don't have any peak hour charges here. The closest thing we have is a discount on our power bill if we let them come out and install some sort of limiter on our house that will regulate the A/C during the summer (I don't have one).

I did just check two bills from this year and they were both under $0.14/kwh. (I think it was .136 and .139).

I didn't believe the energyguide tag that came with the machine claiming $96 per year estimated energy cost and assumed it would be higher. But I might have to figure out exactly HOW much higher, so I can better understand what my parameters are when figuring out the optimal way to use this thing.

Yesterday was a test, so I won't beat myself up for that one. It was good data that I've recorded. And now I know that when it gets unbearably hot this single unit seems up to the job of making the house comfortable, and on those days I'm not really going to care all that much. They don't usually come very often around here.

It was also too cold for me as well. It didn't need to be on that long, or at least that much time in a single block, despite the temp outside. 75 degrees is a lot colder when your house isn't so humid it's about to start raining inside.

So... my tag says this "Estimated energy cost based on a national average electricty cost of 13 cents per kwh and a seasonal use of 8 hours a day over a 3 month period.

Well... That right there is probably bullshit. I bet they mean having the thing turned powered up for 8 hours a day, but in the ECO mode and only cooling one room, so it's not actually "ON" very long at all. Otherwise, they're telling me that I spent less than a buck yesterday and I know that ain't right.

Hmmmm....

How can this be?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084WQ8WYH?tag=rocky009-20&linkCode=osi&
amp;th=1&psc=1&keywords=12000%20Btu%20Window%20Air%20Conditioner

Both a review website and the Amazon listing say it runs 992 watts. (I checked all the documentation and it says nothing at all about wattage).

But a BTU calculator site says that 12,000BTU is 3.5168528333 KWH.

I think they've got to be calculating for however long it shuts down on average when used within specs to get that 992 watts. Because 30 (days) x 3 (months) x 8 (hours) x (.13) cents = $93.6.

I just used 7 hours full boar, and assuming the calculator was right that's 3.52KWH x .14 (cents) x 7 (hours) = $3.44

Roughly $1 every two hours to run it.

Still though... Not too bad. I've spent $4 on worse things. Even if we have a month from hell and I did that every single day, that's only $120 additional bucks on the bill for the month.

I did run it for about an hour this morning with the attic door open to get the humidity and some of that residual heat out, and it's quite comfortable up there now. It's actually more comfortable up there than it is in the rest of my house since I prefer it warmer as long as it's dry... which it is.

High of 81 today, cloudy and rain, and I don't imagine I'm even going to be turning it on at all. I still don't feel any desire to turn on a box fan anywhere in the house.

Accuweather is only showing 2 or 3 days this month where it's supposed to get close to 90, and no more days in the 90s... for whatever that's worth a whole month out.

I can probably get by just fine running that thing an hour or two per day on average for the rest of June.

Hehe... nice.

I just noticed on that Amazon listing that it's selling for $100 more than I bought it for a few weeks back.

That's 24 more days of running it like I did yesterday already paid for right there.

Plus it's on a new card that I'm only about $300 away from getting a $200 statement credit. My A/C is basically free this summer.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

That's great Jack.

I bought a fan over a month ago but so far I haven't been able to use it. Heading for more rain but at least the flood watches have stopped for the Interior.

Do tell?

12,000BTU hrs = 3.52KW

3.52KWH x .14 (cents) x 7 (hours) = $3.44

Less than $4 per day, times 25 days is $100. An additional $200 is an additional 50 days.

Yesterday I ran it 7 hours to get less than $4 in charges.

Today I ran it one hour.

Next week it will be in the 70's and I won't use it at all.

Free A/C this summer for me.

Prove me wrong.

No, I haven't and no it hasn't. I am so looking forward to some warm, dry weather Jack. You have no idea. I am tired of a couple of days dry then about a week of rain. It's the beginning of June for heaven's sake!

Yesterday I chipped away, so to speak, on cleaning up that "compost pile" area. The farther down I dig, the more leafmold I find, so this time for one 65 gallon bin of leves to be shredded I managed to shovel up a whole 33-gallon bin of compost. But every now and again I come across a layer of pristine leaves ... it's like a friggin' archaeological dig!

It was too beastly hot today to do anything outside, especially since i goofed and slept late. The only thing I did was water the veggie garden and take the dog for a short walk. The veggies are growing spectacularly; the zucchini and tomato just started flowering, the peppers have been flowering for a week or more, the beets will need to be thinned soon (beet greens! yay!) and the melons are growing their fourth set of leaves.

But since my outdoor work was minimal, I did indoor stuff and we did the weekly shopping.

Beef prices are still out of sight. The best I could snag was "manager's special" ground beef, out of which I made empanada burgers (onion, salt, paprika, flour, cumin, cinnamon, raisins, green olives and - for those not allergic - chopped cooked potatoes) with cole slaw (I make the BEST!) and cherries (on sale!) for dessert. But since I'm allergic to beef, I had sardines instead. Not that it makes any difference since I can't taste much anyway, and the family really likes these burgers!

Well, kitchen cleanup time.

As for me, I was doing a lot of cleanup/ tidyup yesterday and kinked my back again. So last night I used the heating pad which helped enough to let me walk around today, but it was an uncomfortable, restless night what with trying to stay centered in it. So today I decided to do a lot of sit-down work.

If you'd like Kiki to keep her trash talking out of this thread, I'd ask Sigs and Brenda to say as much.

There's no need for it in here, and it's just as welcome now as it is when T brings it into the Garden.

Thanks.

Oh, and either you're too stupid to get my post about your shit-ass accounting, or you're playing dumb. So let me spell it out.

Hey look, I didn't spend $100 because the price went up after I bought the AC!
Hey look, I didn't spend tens of millions of dollars on a private jet yesterday!

Therefore, my AC is going to be free!
Therefore, me driving my car around is going to be free!

SIX, I would hve said it differently, and out of concern for you, but I agree with KIKI's point. The money that you "don't spend" is NOT income. It's great to get rebates and points and shit, but spent money is just spent money.

We used to have a joke where I worked... someone would find an ad for some really expensive luxury item .... HALF OFF ON TOP LINE CALLAWAY GOLF CLUB SET WITH FREE SET OF BALLS!... and we would laugh and say we couldn't afford to save like that, and toss the ad in the recycler.

Or dd brings me a coupon $0.75 off on [some comparatively expensive meat] and I explain, again, that even if I use the coupon it will still cost more $6 more than if I threw the coupon out and bought a cheaper brand.

I don't see you buying luxuries, and I'm glad you have an A/C, but to say that you didn't spend $100 [more] on the unit means that your A/C is basically "free" is the kind of contextual thinking that gets people in trouble.

The $100 I saved by buying it 3 weeks early is only 1/3rd of the money I am talking about. The other 2/3rds is the $200 credit I get on my new card when I spend $1,000 in 3 months, and THAT IS income. I regularly get over $500 tax free every year doing this.

I have zero debt and I pay the cards off every month. I've done so since August of 2005.

So yes... My A/C is free this year.

EDIT:

I just realized I'm celebrating 15 years of debt independence in 2 months and 4 days.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

In other words, you spent $1000 to get $200 back. That calculates out to 20% off the cost.

You may have reduced your cost. But in the end, buying your AC cost you money. Running it will cost you money. Nothing about your AC is completely free, dork.

You're such a joke.

Oh, btw, I easily have 4 decades of debt free living. You will never catch up to that ... you will always, ALWAYS, be decades behind me!
