We had about 5 days of heaven here. Back to 50's and 60's here with nights in the 30's and 40's for a while. That's okay. I don't mind spring when we're not getting 50 times as much rain as Kiki is. Good for the new grass seeds, but I'll probably have to start actively watering them Tuesday and until they're fully germinated.

It's not the most appropriate paint ... primer and rust-preventative would have been better, but it's what I had on hand. I don't expect it to last.

Today I finished turning over veggie garden#2 and started building a "path" from leftover bricks and chunks of concrete which will allow me to pull the greenwaste bin from the front to the back of the garden.

That, sorting mail, and getting dear daughter to clear the house and take the bins to curb were the accomplishments for the day.

Oh good. You can be the busy one today for the both of us.

I finished de-caulking the kitchen window and giving it a TSP bath. A few hours time, but that's it. Should have done more, but I really hate that work. I'm just glad to finally have it done.

I think I'm going to put the legs on the step now before I go to bed. They came hours ago, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. No painting tonight though.

I put the rubber legs on. It's nice having 2 non-impact cordless drills that use the same batteries in instances like this when you're drilling a lot of pilot holes, or when I am using a countersink bit for something.

Since it was not going to be seen when it's done, I didn't go to the trouble of making a jig. I just put them where I wanted to on the legs and did my best to drill straight in the center of the washer, then zipped them in. If I only had one drill and had to switch bits 20 times, I would have made a jig though, since it's much easier lining them up when the first one is firmly in place.

A little voice in my head was worried that after I put these on it would rock a bit, but I powered through them and when I put it on my floor it didn't budge. Not a single millimeter.




I decided against putting it outside just yet. I believe the curing time for the paint is somewhere between 7 and 14 days. No reason to put it out in the elements and walk all over it until then. It's already been almost 2 years without it.




Here's what they look like:



I didn't measure them, but they look to be about 1/2" thick. Plenty of space between the wood and ground contact when it rains. I don't get nearly as much water up there (or mud) now that the gutters are up and there isn't two waterfalls off the sides of the porch when it rains, but if the rain isn't coming down perfectly straight or blowing the other way it still gets wet up there from time to time.

I'll let you know over time if they hold up and were worth the time and money, but out of the box I have to say that I'm very pleased.

Gave myself a second chance at today...

Didn't feel much like sleeping yet, so I caulked the window frame and hit the OG nails that were placed badly in the wood and I tamped down with a punch with some wood putty. It should all be dry tomorrow so I can prime the surface and get it ready for the new trim.

The window sill was awful. Not only was there a full tube of caulk that I had to remove on this window, but it looks as though it's been painted 30 times over the last 60 years and nobody ever tried to sand it down and make it look nice in between the various color changes the room has gone through.

Removing it and building a new one would have been a monster chore since I would have had to remove tiles that had been built around it too, but I believe I've sanded it down to a very nice looking finish and it should look brand new when I'm done.

I know I posted about this before, but this reminds me of the room I refinished in a then-100-year-old house that we bought when we first moved to LA. Some of the rooms had been re-done quite credibly, the kitchen had been re-done terribly, but I picked the worst looking bedroom and it was a mess. Aside from the fact that the previous owners had chosen a rust red/mustard yellow color scheme on ... everything... the window frames looked LUMPY. I dreaded what I was going to see when I stripped those suckers, but what I found was that someone had bent over/hammered down curtain rod holders and painted right over them. Once I stripped those suckers the wood underneath was in pristine condition, and once repainted white the fine details were crisp and clean.

Another thing they painted over? Crystal and brass doorknobs.

Sounds like you know exactly what I mean.

It's why I really don't want to remove anything that I don't have to. For all I know those cabinets are structural support in this damn house.



Speaking of painting over things that shouldn't be, I only now noticed that the plug outlet tucked away that the fridge plugs into was originally a brown unit and had been painted over baby blue (badly) whenever the cabinets and walls were all baby blue.


Killer day today with no break in between. I'm definately not going back to work on anything tonight.


Tamped down a few mole tunnels that I am hoping were old. They weren't visible from the surface and could have been residual.

Watered the seeds 3 times.

Then I primed the window and wanted to hit it with a second coat so found other things to prime while I was waiting on it to dry. One thing lead to another and I ended up putting the final coat of primer inside every lower cabinet and on the entire face. Also hit the final prime coat underneath the high cabs, the flex conduit coming over the stove and up from under the sink for the garbage disposal.

I know I did some other things in between.

Here's hoping the seedlings are starting to sprout. I'm going to go out and water them soon. Going to be pretty cold in these parts the next week or so, but it shouldn't be any danger of freezing overnight. That should help keep the ground wet in between watering while the sun is out.

I think I'll do some weed spraying today too. Fortunatlely, it looks as though my 5 to 10x Triazicide dump along the house and garage perimiter has done the trick this year finally. Mid April and I haven't seen any ants or hardly any bugs anywhere near the house. I've got more and will probably put it down in a month or two.

First thing after my first water is to paint (yes, actual finish paint) on some trim that will be going up. By tomorrow I hope to have the window and the entire valance/nook above the sink trimmed and painted so I can finally get my shiny new sink light installed and don't have to use a LED bar my buddy gave me for lights in the kitchen for non-working purposes.

Got me a new toy.

To treat myself for finally "getting" how to properly caulk without wasting a lot of it, I decided it was time to upgrade from whatever bargain bin caulk gun I was using that was terribly hard on your hands to a $20 model that has a lot more leverage, an ergonomic hand grip and the ability to rotate the nozzle on the fly.


I'm going to need 2 coats of paint on all that pre-primed trim. I didn't have this problem with the OG batch I used for teh 2nd floor windows/doors and floorboard, but whatever "primer" they put on this batch is a black hole for paint. I should at least be able to sand them down and get the 2nd coat on them before the day is through.

After hitting them, since the can was already open, I put the finish coat on the cabinet/wall under the sink, and on both of the flex conduit I primed yesterday. I know I said I wasn't going to paint any of the lower cabinets, but once I get another coat on there I can re-install the shiny new junction box to it and have a shiny new flapper switch to power my garbage disposal which has been out of order for well over a month now.




Oh... and the weed spray can wait until we're in the 60's again. It's depressingly cold outside today.


I'm going to TSP those tiles/grout now to prep for that grout marker while I'm waiting for the first coat to dry on everything.

Went through a pile of paper, some needed shredding and other things didn't. And to my astonishment I am almost done with shredding all old paper that has been hanging around since before my mom died. The two file holders they are in once they are emptied and shredded can be donated to a thrift store.

New caulk gun is awesome. I had no idea.

Got that trim scuff sanded and a 2nd coat on it. 2nd and final coat on the electric and the sink cabinet interior. 1st coat on the soffit behind the valance, the inside and bottom of the valance, the sides of the two upper cabinets on either side of the sink and the entire window frame and sill.

Used up a grout marker and got myself past the sink where I needed to be for the work in the next few days. Caulked everywhere that needed to be caulked on the underside of the high cabinets above the stove/microwave. Also caulked the sides of the two cabinets on either side of the sink to the tile.


Hopefully tomorrow I can get all the trim up around the valance and frame out that window, then I can caulk that and start caulking inside of the upper cabinets.

Play my cards right and I should have the new light above the sink and the microwave nook installed within the next 48 hours.

Over at this end, I managed to prep veggie#2 and plant all of these plants that I purchased so far: two tomatoes, six japanese cucumbers, six zucchini, a dozen cells of "bull's blood" beets, six cells of basil, one of thyme, and one of parsley.

On the way positive side, one of our backdoor neighbors (we have two, our lots are offset from each other) decided to take down/ thin out the jungle that was growing at the back wall. They had a decrepit apple tree, two volunteer ash trees right at the wall (They would have toppled the wall ina few years given their muscular roots) a Mugo pine that was beginning to shade our solar panels, a tree-sized and vigorous privet that we wereteying to cut back, a dead juniper,a grapefruit tree and god knows what else.

Mostly gone now.

I think I started it by having our avocado tree trimmed, there was a large limb that went way over their property and hid a multitude of sins.

It sounds (and looks) like a lot, but really it's not too much more than I'd been doing every day since early January, aside from the extra hours I've been able to put in this week just out of sheer excitement that real visible progress is finally being made.

I'm so glad I've documented everything with pictures along the way so I can remember all the steps necessary to get to the finish line. It's really cool going back through them and seeing it all.


If you ever need to do any caulking, seriously, do yourself a favor and get a good caulk gun. Caulking might have finally just "clicked" for me the other day after having done it time to time over years, but my hand was killing me and useless for the rest of the day. I've trained myself to do quite a bit with my left hand to be constantly switching back and forth to give each hand rest, but caulking is probably one of the things I'll never be good at with my left hand. With this gun I don't need to. It leaves my hand with zero pain and does most of the work for me. I think had I gotten a proper caulk gun in my youth I could have been a pro at it in my 20's.

Sometimes it pays not to be a cheap bastard.

Geez...

Thermostat is down to 55 and it's gone off three times just this morning and probably all night. I thought spring was here? We've already had a few days in the 80s before the cold turn.

I guess it turns out that it's quite normal for grass seed not to grow if it's continually dipping under 50 degrees at night, and for about a week straight we're just barely eeking out the low 50's for the high.

I'm going to have to mow the lawn. No way around it. Even the hillbillies mowed their lawn yesterday. Here's hoping I didn't waste that time and money on the seeds.

At least it doesn't look like the birds are interested in it. I've got a lot of robins and a few woodpeckers around here, but they prefer food with a little meat on it.

I forgot about my vice grip hands...

I decided I'm going to use my good caulk I bought the other day on the interior of the cabinets, but I didn't want the tube I was using of the moderately good store brand stuff to go to waste, and with nothing I could think of to use it on it would eventually go bad even with a nail in it like a tube I had from last year already did.

So... why not just hit the bottom of that sink cabinet that already looks a million times better just with a few coats of primer on it?

I didn't have enough for the full thing, but I almost got there. Looks way better now in any case.


But wow... This was a first for me. I blew out the top of the tube and more was leaking out of that than the nozzle.

I think I'll have to make adjustments to how much I cut off the tip for the flow I want. I'm not sure if this was because it's a tube that was already a few years old and/or it was a non-DAP product, or if this is something that I could regularly do now with this new gun if I'm not careful. I'd never heard anybody complaining about this happening before online.

Glad it happened with a tube that was otherwise going to go to waste in a section of work that really doesn't even need to be done and is going to be covered up anyhow.


First time in my life I've also cleaned up a caulk gun real good. Never had one I cared enough to actually do that with before.

I didn't finish caulking today, and that's all I was doing. Like anything else, it took longer than I imagined it would. Even though I've upped my skills and got the new gun, it's not easy caulking inside of boxes on a ladder. Not exactly hard, but much more time consuming than I thought it would be. I had to hit a few spots with the foam backer rod before caulking, but much less than I thought I would have to.

If I had to do it over again, I would have done it differently. I figured I'd do everything but the deep Lazy Susan corner cabs first, since every step in those have taken 2 to 3 times the effort and time than any other cabinet. But shortly after finishing all the other ones and moving onto the first LS I ran out of caulk in my first tube and had to start a second one.

No big deal, right?

OPPS... When you have a full tube of caulk, your caulk gun is more than twice the length of the tube.

Not impossible to do the work still, but much more difficult than it would have been had I started the LS cabs when my first tube was halfway used up.


Anyhow, I got everything done except for the last Lazy Susan, and in between the fronts of any of the three cabinets in that cluster. I should be able to wrap that up in around 90 or so minutes tomorrow morning and move on to framing out the window and the ceiling behind the valance.

And while all that is drying I get to start primering and painting the inside of the top cabinets.

By the weekend everything should be white and I should have my sink light back up.

About weed control. I just sprayed the front yard with glyphosate, again. I was all set to water in a bunch of corn gluten, too, but in looking it up (again) I found that Univ of Oregon (2006) could not reproduce Univ of Iowa's pre-emergent weed preventer results.

Since corn gluten has 10% nitrogen, an application might just wind up fertilizing the weeds! So I'm looking into a synthetic weed preventer that I can use after I reshape the front yard (dig in pathways etc) and bring more weeds seeds up to the surface.

Also, I was wondering what the 'sunset' period for its activity is. My neighbor put down some weed killer of some type on part of my parkway, and nothing would grow there for years. So be sure to check that caveat out! I think it shouldn't have a long-lasting effective period.

Bonide and some other products are selective for killing grasses, including Bermuda grass.

Everyone says that mulch works by 'smothering' weeds. My experience is that with new weed seeds, it works because if you have a thick enough layer, the seeds on top keep growing their roots longer and longer ... but don't get to the dirt where all the moisture is, and then they run out of energy. When it comes to seeds already in the soil, and established weeds, an Oregon prof who seems to be an expert (I'd have to dig around for her name and website) recommends a deep mulch layer for Bermuda grass to keep it shaded, but she cautions to NOT use cardboard (cardboard apparently being very tasty to termites). If she thinks it works on Bermuda grass, then it would probably work on already-established weeds once their tops have been burnt off by agricultural soaps, vinegar, etc.

Anyway, I appreciate the info!

I've just started on my yard, so it'll be a while before I can tell you about my experience. But I've decided to complete each small area at a time, from weeding to digging out dirt for the pathway to tilling the soil with pine shavings to mulching with pine shavings. My area limit will be whatever I can do using one bale of shavings at a time.

It turns out you can sand caulk, if you're very, very careful while using a sheet of dollar store 150 grit paper rolled up and take your sweet ass time with it. At least, you can sand it within the first 24 hours, anyway.

Did that on the deep cabinet joint first. Then instead of caulking the Lazy Susan, I cut and installed the trim to the ceiling/cabinets behind the valance and trimmed out the window frame and installed it. Caulked all of it. Then I finished caulking inside the last Lazy Susan and the outside joints of the three cabinets in that cluster as well as the cabinet on the bottom in that area.

After that, I primed the 2 cabinets over the stove/microwave inside and out as well as the Lazy Susan in that cluster and the upper cabinet to the left of the sink.

Everything is so white and clean.

Only 3 cabinets out of 15 haven't been primed yet, and the rest are in various stages up to and including final paint complete.

Glad my guilt gene has been kicking in on the slower days after dark...

After some shopping and mailing in a rebate, I did some yard work after poisoning yet another new mole track, but when I was mowing the lawn I didn't feel that great so I laid down. Don't think it's anything to worry about... I've had a lot of long days recently without taking a day off.

But then I at least got the final coat on the area behind the valance and the window frame so I can finally put that new light in tomorrow. I'm also going to put the first GFCI switch with the new screwless decorative plate since I won't be doing any more sanding above and the grout marker is done in that area. Probably the first time this entire house has ever seen Code on that front.




While I had the paint out, I went ahead and painted the seriously damaged flooring under the sink. I had put two coats of primer down over the weeks, and over the last few days I Shot some brad nails into it where it was pulling up, used up half a bottle of cheap caulk down there so it didn't go bad, and any of the "waste" caulk that were on my fingers from the interior cabinets went down there as well. At this point, that floor is half rubber and plastic.

It's all getting covered with a real nice surface anyhow, but if anybody goes poking around down there like I never did, it won't look ghastly anymore.

Primering cabinets continues tomorrow.

Seeds watered. Mole run poised yesterday caved in. Weeds sprayed.

Kitchen sink light installed. GFCI installed. 3 cabinets that hadn't been primered yet are now primered, inside and out. The other 4 top cabinets that were primered already got a 2nd coat inside and out.

The light is almost blinding in there now it's so bright.

I took a vacation today. Been pushing myself and today I was going to start some plants indoors, but decided to just do what needed to be done: sort mail, pay bills, get daughter to take out the trash, greenwaste, and recycling, and order some necessary stuff online. Didn't even do dishes, altho I'm sure facing a cleanup tomorrow! And for dinner we had leftovers: leftover glazed pork tenderloin for dd and hubby. leftover chicken tagine for me, and greek-style salad for everyone.


It was nice.

Not a fan of beige anything. It's why I don't smoke in the house.

My buddy is coming over one of these days to pick up that dishwasher. I put my foot down and told him last night that if he doesn't get it by Wednesday it's going out to the curb. It's blocking half of my tool bench in the garage, and the weather is warming up by the weekend so I can start using it again and moving my operations out of the basement just in case we end up getting a deluge of rain.

I'm going to see what he thinks about the white. His old man thinks I should go with a gunmetal grey that he did on a set of cabinets recently.


The only thing that really concerns me is the white showing the dirt/grime. I'm not worried about the final product being too white. The countertop is going to be a lot darker than the one in there now and eventually the floor will be tiled a dark color instead of the white primer down there now. I also haven't decided on color for the walls. I had bought few gallons back in late 2019 for the kitchen and living room that I might use. They are fairly dark blue and green which I thought I had decided against, but perhaps with the mega-white on the cabinets/tiles/trim and ceiling, it will still be okay to use it.

Rainy and cold outside. At least the ground should be plenty wet before the freeze sets in and we get our 2 inches of snow tomorrow night.


Massive cleanup and re-org today. I can hardly walk on the side of the kitchen opposite the cabinets, and the boxes of stuff in the living room have grown. I need to get everything out of the area that doesn't need to be there at this stage, and get the basement cleaned up and ready to start moving some of the work out to the garage when it warms up.

I'm still going to try to put a 2nd coat inside and out on those three that just got their first coat yesterday, but that will be my only kitchen work goal today.

Well... I cleaned the kitchen and living room and did the re-org and vacuumed everything up good. Even cleaned everything in the bathroom except for the tub. Didn't get to the basement today though. This was a pretty massive job.

I think I'm done for the day and I'm going to wait on any more painting too.

I love projects, but I hate chores.



My buddy came to get the dish washer today, so I have my tool bench back.
