Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

KIKI: BRENDA: Yup, that is a big relief. No waiting on buses and hauling things up and down hills. Well, boots to keep feet dry and warm. Cane just for safety sake. Didn't know if there was any ice under the snow or just on the side walk around the gas station my apartment building is near.

And the vet gave him the all-clear, but he's still doing all those things. So, if this is due to allergies, I looked up Benadryl for cats. And I hope to go to the store tomorrow and get liquid Benadryl, and dose him with a 2mg dose, which is about half the standard feline dose. Hmm. Maybe I'll put that off till Monday, since vets are closed on Sunday and emergency vet care is hugely expensive, just in case he has an untoward reaction.

The other 2 I got all vetted and cleaned-up and happy to be with people (including one that looked to be half coyote, I appropriately named her Coyote), and then took them to a no-kill shelter where they were adopted in no time. But I only adopted the one dog who was my first one, because my work schedule changed, and I was away from home 12 hours a day, and it didn't seem fair to leave a dog alone for that long. And between all the previous fostered and adopted dogs and cats, and this cat, I was diagnosed with many, many allergies including to dogs and cats, so I refrained. But I made an exception for this cat despite my allergies because he had so MANY medical problems, I couldn't imagine anyone else giving him the $$$ care he needed. But my doctor has warned me - no more pets. Anyway Mr E aka The Big Guy is now my sole pet and I like to think he's now comfortable and happy, and healthy according to the vet, with a good sounding heart and no asthma recurrence, no more visible seizures since he was a kitten, and his gut problems under control ... with the exception of his chronic hairball problem, and perhaps ear itchiness due to allergies. So far, so good for him; knock on wood.

KIKI: I just have a love-hate history with vaccines and medications. Half of all antibiotics I've ever been put on as an adult had to be discontinued and permanently forbidden due to untoward body-wide rashes, along with the anti-viral Zovirax, which is why I had to go through shingles on pain medication alone. And aside from the flu vaccines, every other vaccination I've been given - shingles and pneumonia 2x - I've had some major localized reaction. Not to mention weird, supposedly rare side effects other medications I've been on. So, I think I'll need to discuss this with my doctor.

I think when the time comes you need to make the decision on whether to own another cat or not and don't let the doctor make that choice for you. You've been able to cope with it up until now, and obviously owning a pet is something you take a lot of joy in. Suddenly not having one someday and feeling like you're barred from doing so could be worse for you than what you're trying to prevent. Just my two cents.
Quote: It's kind of unfair for me to say all cats make terrible pets. They all have different personalities. When I lived at my grandmas she had 7 of them. 6 of them just pissed all over the place even though the boxes were cleaned all the time. I actually liked 3 of them for their personalities otherwise (including the one who went in the box), but the other 4 were just awful. One of them literally hissed the second you opened the door to the room they were in and had to be separated from the rest of the cats 24/7 because it would tear out another cat's eyes if it had the chance. The one I liked I gladly would have taken if it needed a place to stay, but my gram's is still very much alive and kicking and she was the last of the 7 cats to pass away a few years ago. Thankfully my aunt was living with her and put her foot down and didn't let my grandma become one of those cat ladies because left to her own devices I could totally have seen her with over 30 cats.
Quote: Did you like having a dog? I fekkin' love dogs.
Quote: People ask me all the time why I don't have one abecause I'm so good with them but it's because of the reason you stated. Right now, at this point in my life, it would probably be quite manageable. I mean, there's a ton of things I need to do, but I'm at home most of the time, but dogs live quite long and I can't say that would always be the case. I get so angry when I hear stories about all of the dogs that are just abandoned on the side of the road and whenever I really start thinking about getting one I start asking myself all the what if questions and I never follow through with it. My mom gave up the only dog I ever had shortly after the divorce on a weekend our dad had us.
Quote:I want one. Maybe I can finally do it when I get this place finished and settle into my "forever" home.

Quote:I've owned cats AND dogs (more cats than dogs, but that's just how life worked out) and they were all either "found" (as in, found on the street) or "pound". I had one cat that IMHO was even better than most dogs, personality-wise: He was an companionable as a dog, but not as slavish or demanding. He would walk with us when I walked the dog, and would sit with me when I wanted to sit quietly. He loved being petted but didn't demand it, and would look at me and talk to me trying to communicate, and when I had to have terrible procedures done to him for his health, and had to bathe him afterwards to clean all the poop off his rear end he seemed to understand that it was for his benefit, and trusted me completely to do the right thing.
Quote: All of the dogs I've owned have had completely different personalities. Two were rambunctious as hell (mostly labrador and mostly german short hair), one was a quietly-devoted one person dog (mostly samoyed, and I happened to be that oen person) and our current dog (prolly a miniature rat terrier) is a weird cross between a cat and a dog: she demands petting and lap time*, is playful and responsive and a terror to lizards everywhere, but scared of most other dogs and people * I have never seen a dog do this, but some time around 10PM when we're all settled in and watching TV she will climb up on hubby's chest, push her head under his chin, wagging her tail, and ... I swear to go ... batting her eyelashes at him so he'll pet and cuddle her. It's the darndest thing.
Quote:Oh, that was cruel, to all of you AND the dog.
Quote:You will get one some day. I'm sure of it.

When the whole group was playing we played indoors at a local seniors centre. It's too wet in the around here to play outside and windy. You could possibly play outside if you had the tables in the summer.
