I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

So speaking of progress ... how're things going with your teeth SIX? Haven't heard much from you on the personal end, I hope things are going OK.

I have my fingers crossed that he will continue to get better.

As an aside, if the police had to "find" the guy that hit him, it sounds like a "hit and run". Maybe he was drunk at the time and needed a few hours to burn thru the alcohol, and maybe the RCMP (or whoever is handling the investigation) can't prove drunk driving so long after the fact, but he could be in a bunch of trouble.

That is true Sig.

It was a "hit and run". The driver left the scene but there were plenty of witnesses. And yes it is the RCMP. Not sure about the driver being drunk but he is in a world of trouble. Fleeing the scene of a accident and such.

I know. The box was labelled "Misc. papers to be double checked". So, I wrongly assumed that it held old papers that belonged to my mom and still needed to be sorted through and shredded. Boy, was I wrong. I found books that I inherited from my late guy and this coffee cup.

My priorities have always been straight. Up thread I mentioned that I found my copy of "Serenity" the novel. I even found my copy of "Serenity" the movie. So there.

Wow. What a find. That would have me on my heels for a day or two, sorting through the emotions.

It was quite the find. It is emotional when I find things like those books. Reminds me of how much I still miss him at times. The coffee cup was a gift from a friend who is still very much alive.

Obviously I had managed to clear out the papers that had been in it and then reused the box but never relabelled it.

The day before that I found my dad's hammer and old nail can in a bin. I kept both of those for hanging things up for my mom and repairing things. That was emotional too.

USGS reporting program DID YOU FEEL IT
I felt a gentle rocking.

M 6.4 - 12km SW of Searles Valley, CA appx 10:30 this am.

There seem to be a number of earthquakes in that area, some the USGS associates with Searles Valley and some with Ridgecrest which is nearby. Looking at the map, it looks to be about 200 mi almost due north of me.

All of these many quakes started with a few small ones so the small ones were foreshocks.

eta:

The first one of the Searles Valley / Ridgecrest set appears to be a small and shallow quake (as quakes go, but almost 3x as deep as the Glen Avon swarm)
M 0.5 - 11km SW of Searles Valley, CA 2019-07-04 09:07:20 10.2 km

with larger and smaller quakes quickly ramping up over an hour
M 1.5 - 11km SW of Searles Valley, CA 2019-07-04 09:13:43 11.1 km
M 4.0 - 11km SW of Searles Valley, CA 2019-07-04 10:02:55 10.3 km
M 2.5 - 11km SW of Searles Valley, CA 2019-07-04 10:09:20 11.6 km
M 0.9 - 10km SW of Searles Valley, CA 2019-07-04 10:11:32 11.5 km
M 2.1 - 12km SW of Searles Valley, CA 2019-07-04 10:12:15 9.6 km
M 1.9 - 11km SW of Searles Valley, CA 2019-07-04 10:12:38 10.7 km
M 0.9 - 9km SW of Searles Valley, CA 2019-07-04 10:13:51 13.6 km
M 1.4 - 10km SW of Searles Valley, CA 2019-07-04 10:15:47 11.2 km

to near-simultaneous 6.4 Searles Valley / Ridgecrest quakes not quite an hour and a half after the initial quake

M 6.4 - 12km SW of Searles Valley, CA 2019-07-04 10:33:49 10.7 km
M 6.4 - 10km ENE of Ridgecrest, CA 2019-07-04 10:35:01 4.8 km

followed by many aftershocks (though there's always a chance something even bigger is going to come along)

Neither Searles Valley nor Ridgecrest are associated with a major fault.

Expect more earthquakes, possible even larger ones, seismologist say

Seismologists said the 6.4 earthquake that struck Southern California likely broke ground near the epicenter but was far enough not to do damage in the Los Angeles area.

Seismologist Lucy Jones said the quake was far enough away from the dangerous San Andreas fault “that any impact on the system will be minimal.”

Still more quakes — possibly bigger ones — are likely.

“This does not make [the Big One] less likely. There is about a 1 in 20 chance that this location will be having an even bigger earthquake in the next few days, that we have not yet seen the biggest earthquake of the sequence,” she added.

There have already been dozens of aftershocks from the quake, and Jones says they should keep coming.

“Some aftershocks will probably exceed magnitude 5, which means they’ll probably be damaging,” she said. “The last time we had an earthquake above magnitude 6 in Southern California was in 1999.”

That was the Hector Mine quake. It was a 7.1.

Robert Graves, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, says the USGS was sending geologists to the field to look for surface rupture.

Near the epicenter in Ridgecrest, the quake maxed out at intensity level 7, or very strong shaking. The city of Ridgecrest, population 29,000, endured intensity level 6, or “very strong” shaking, in which damage that might occur could result in broken chimneys and considerable damage in poorly built or badly designed buildings, but negligible damage in buildings of good design and construction.

The earthquake was felt widely throughout the Los Angeles area, said Caltech seismologist Egill Hauksson. It’s unlikely there was significant damage in a major urban area given that the earthquake was centered in such a remotely populated area.

The area that ruptured occurred in an area of faults slightly east of the Sierra Nevada. The Little Lake fault is one of them, and last went through a magnitude 6 earthquake in 1984, Hauksson said.

Not much progress anywhere, really. I looked at some real estate down by my brother and found one out of the six houses to be promising. In the mean time, I've done a lot of yard work, because that's basically free. Clearing out as much crap as I can so I'm only left with what would basically fit in an apartment.

I think I'm back to selling the house for cash, or at least talking to a real estate agent and seeing what my options are. New developments have occurred that make it an impossibility for me to fix it up myself. I don't have the knowledge, the skill or the income to have somebody else do it. All I can really do now is try to get it in the hands of somebody who can do it before it gets worse and hopefully make a few bucks in the process. I've resigned myself to the fact that there is no way I'm getting what I paid for it now.

The teeth are just going to have to wait. No that there's no pain, my mouth is about 100 on my current priority list.

SIX. Life, as they say, is what happens as we make other plans. I'm sorry to hear that progress on your house it out of your hands. Sometimes things like that happen.

Sounds tho like you have a goal in mind, and that's to move someplace smaller and closer to your brother. It's good to have a goal to look forward to, instead of just treading water! Also, will you have AC??

Where I grew up, our bedrooms were basically a converted attic, right under the roof. The roof was well-insulated, but there were no windows facing west (where the wind usually blew from) and no cross-breeze, and I remember having an EXTREMELY hard time getting to sleep. I didn't realize it then because I was just a little kid, but it was just too damn hot. So I know a little about hot humid weather, and I know it's worse the further inland you go. I think I got my hatred of hot weather from that experience.

May I make a suggestion? For your next job, set your sights higher? You're a smart guy, you know how to problem-solve. Maybe there will be a responsible position where your problem-solving skills are an asset, and you don't have to be a droid manager. Licensed hanydman? Software developer? Not sure what fits your skillset, but I have faith in you.

BRENDA, you must REALLY have been in a cramped situation! It sounds to me like you were forced to move into a teeny tiny place with all of your wordly possessions quite a while ago, and you're FINALLY getting a chance to unearth/unpack your things, and make a home for yourself! I'm glad that you're able to arrange your things and make a nice place for yourself. I'm happy for you!

SIG, I was. I couldn't unpack because there was no place to put anything. All I had unpacked at the other place was the basics and even then that wasn't much.

It is good to be able to even use the word "home" to refer to where I am living. And it does feel more like home. I've got a good number of pictures done up. With more ideas for things.

Once I am more organized and get a couch, I will have people over.

KIKI, here in the flatlands some people felt it and some people didn't. I was out weeding in the front yard and moving around so I didn't feel a thing. Hubby had just stepped out onto the front stoop to offer me a cup of coffee and was standing still and he felt it.

I'm still chugging ahead with my earthquake preparedness. I had rinsed and refilled my two 55-gallon barrels and found that one of them had developed a crack - in the bottom, no less- so that one is no longer useable. So I'll be scrounging around for another barrel or alternate water storage. I figure one gallon per day per person for one month. Presumably afer a month emergency supplies will be brought in, and/or they will have energency repairs made and central water-distribution taps that people can fill up at.

Still sick from the previous sore throat, coughing and wheezing; hubby developed ear infection/ dizziness / deafness. The only person to have recovered 100% is dear daughter.

Anyway, I put myself on a "schedule" which is the only way I'll consistently get things done, and that means clearing out the two things that I kinda hate doing early in the AM when it's still relatively cool, and that's taking the dog for a walk and weeding. Once that's cleared out of the way (when family is still usually asleep) I can work in the kitchen while hubby and I talk geopolitics (his favorite topic!). Once THAT'S done I can make progress on all of the "projects" going on around here, starting 1PM. Dinner at 7PM, that's the plan.

Hey Jack

If it's any consolation, you probably lived in your place for less than $150/month, in terms of taxes and utilities. And I think you'll get at least 50% of your original investment back, if not 80%.

And that's not nothing!

Yeah... that's the way I'm looking at it. I figure if I get $30k I'll be alright with it, if not exactly ecstatic. Really hoping I can get at least $50 for it though. My friend who's into real estate seems to think I could get $60k and said if it wasn't for his fiancee he'd offer me that right now. He said he'd still might if they want another rental property. I'm not going to hold my breath on that one though. The market here has recovered quite a bit since I bought it near the bottom. I also did put a lot of work into it the first few years I lived here, and none of that work is compromised. It's just a shame that these issues are way out of my wheelhouse. I'd be able to sell for a profit already if they didn't exist, and if I'd been able to put just $10k more into the house before I sold it I could probably nearly double my money without them.

Got to do something soon though. Like I said, the problems aren't going to go away on their own and they're getting worse at an exponential rate.

Thanks.

I'm not worried about anything. Just like the loss of my job, I just needed some time to wrap my head around everything and "mourn" for lack of a better word.

I built up pretty good rapport with the realtor. She's old enough to retire, but loves what she does so she keeps doing it. I asked her about the job situation down there and she said her husband works at the Caterpillar plant and they're having a hard time getting good people that stick around. She then went on to talk about the "kids" these days and how they don't want to work and told me a story or two about people her husband must have known who didn't make the cut.

Asking myself the question "do I really want to work full time" might not be an option for me going forward anymore, at least until I put a sizable amount back in a bank account, anyhow. I let her know that when I first called her I thought I'd be coming down there with quite a lot more money than I likely will be now. The house I like that we looked at might not be something I can purchase without a mortgage at this point. It wouldn't be much, but it would still be a mortgage. Even if I manage to eek out enough in the sale of my current house to barely cover it, I wouldn't want to leave myself with virtually nothing and feel that panic of living paycheck to paycheck that I haven't felt since my early 20's.

Banks don't typically like giving loans out, even small ones like this, unless you have quite an established work history, so even if I have a decent job down there I might not be able to secure the cash I need unless I can get somebody to co-sign the loan with me. I'd like to think that would be an option, given that I'm really the only one in the position to move right down with my brother and they'd know that I'd be down there within a few miles of him (the house I like right now is only 3 blocks away, actually).

At the end of the day here, I'm still a lot better off than a majority of Americans. I'm going to have to do something about my income situation, but as far as cash on hand and whatever this house is still worth, I'm not in terrible shape. Even if my worst fears come true and I can't even get rid of this house for less than $30k.

I was talking to my mom and step-dad about it when I got back and said it's not as if I didn't learn a lot and improve myself while this was all going on. I also felt that maybe it came just a bit too easy for me this time around and I didn't appreciate it like I should have either. Sure... I had to sacrifice a lot of things to save up that kind of money, but let's face it... I'm not Mr. Social and it was a good excuse to stop going out and blowing all of my money socializing while I was making it.

I won't go as far as to say that I didn't deserve it. I made a lot of smart decisions. I showed a lot of restraint. I did without a lot of things that other people couldn't or wouldn't. But shortly after reaching my goal I just sort of fizzled out and stopped giving a shit about anything. This is actually a common theme to my life, and something I desperately need to do something about. I go full bore on something, sometimes for many years of my life and always to the exclusion of other things that should be important to me, only to reach the finish line and sit on my laurels... thus, in time, making any sacrifices I made to get there completely in vain.

As for the A/C? Yup. This house has it. Central air. It was turned on the day I looked at it and it was certainly noticeable, what with the 91 degree temps outside that felt like 98 degrees that day. One of those sticky days where your shirt is drenched in sweat just from doing nothing. The A/C was nice. :)

Just another reason I'd be thrilled to get out of my current house. It's so hot around here right now that I go out to work and sweat just because it's just so gross to sit around doing nothing and sweating.

My goals right now...

1. Make the outside curb appeal as nice as possible to showcase the huge lot and potential for a family to live there. It's a great spot for kids with almost zero through traffic.

2. Desperately try to get rid of the ants, or at least beat them back from the perimeter of the house. I haven't had them inside the house proper for a few years, but while doing weeding out front last weekend it was obvious they are in full force just outside the perimeter. Had I not put a lot of poison down around the foundation early this spring they probably would be inside the walls right now. I just put a full bag of stuff out with the spreader that is designed to cover 5,000 sq feet around the perimeter of the house and garage. A bit overkill, maybe, but desperate times yada, yada...

3. Double down on my de-cluttering effort and letting go of more things than I initially intended to. The goal is to bring it down to the size of a 12" moving truck, (a single bedroom apartment) leaving room for any appliances I might take taking up no more than a 16" truck. (The house I want has a washer and dryer, but no stove and fridge. I might even want to swap out the washer and dryer for my own since mine are amazing and the ones there are certainly a step down from what I have). I won't be getting rid of any tools or my lawnmower and snow blower. My old man will take all of that temporarily if I have to rent first.

4. Get in contact with a real estate agent and one or two reputable places with BBB certification that buy houses for cash and see what my options are.

5. Look for higher quality jobs both here and down by my brother.

I don't know how possible it would be, but I'd be thrilled if I was living down there by the first snowfall. I guess that would depend on how good of a cash offer I could get and/or if there is any chance of scoring a good job when I go down there. If the offers are far too low and/or I can't secure a decent job remotely, I'll have to go with an agent and I might be stuck here until next spring.

I'm getting the feeling that my friend was kind of talking out of his ass when he said he might buy the property for another rental if I was willing to sell it for "something low like $60k". He may have just been trying to cheer me up. I did think that if he were to do that though I could just hang here until winter and he'd have a live-in person to help him fix up the house and pay to keep the electric on (which is a must for the sump pump). That would be kind of cool.

Anyway...

Gotta get motivated now. I've got a lot of stuff to do.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

New major quake supersedes previous quakes, making the previous 'big' 6.4 quake a fore-shock.

7.1
17km NNE of Ridgecrest, CA
2019-07-06 03:19:52 UTC-0.9 km

Though it's named for Ridgecrest, it appears to be along the NW/SE Searles Valley earthquake axis, to the NW of the previous cluster. About 5 - 10mi to the NW of this new quake and cluster is a smaller cluster of new, 'smaller' earthquakes (up to magnitude 5.5) listed as Little Lake.

I had just got in my car and turned it on. It was a quite distinct NE/SW directional irregular shifting back and forth that lasted appx a minute, which is quite an extended time.

fwiw the largest earthquake I've experienced at close range was the M5.9 Whittier Narrows quake and I was basically on top of it - a quarter mile off. Log scales being what they are, a roughly M6 earthquake is 1/10 of a roughly M7 earthquake.

Looking at the earthquake map, and completely unrelated? to the recent large quakes I see three nearly parallel faults starting where the San Andreas branches off near Loma Linda. The main part of the San Andreas continues running to the SE, through Thousand Palms and east of the Salton Sea. Another fault set starts just to the west of the San Andreas around Loma Linda and branches off to the S then curving and running SE parallel to the San Andreas. They become a series of braided faults called the San Jacinto fault zone, west of the Salton Sea and down to near Mexicali. And west of those faults is a separate parallel set of braided faults, running SE to the west of Mexicali.

ALL of them have been very active over the last few days.

The more northern part of the San Andreas has been very active from San Fran SE to Simmler. The section SE from Simmler to Loma Linda is quiet. So everything's moving except for the section north of the San Gabriels, from Simmler SE to Loma Linda at the eastern end of the San Gabriels.

Last night I felt the earth move ...

No, seriously.
I've been dying to say that ever since whenever.

So, yes, a large earthquake. Fortunately for us very far away from here. (Not so fortunate for the ppl near Ridgecrest.)

What most people don't realize, and what I keep forgetting, is that earthquakes don't happen like on TV. They don't start with a bang, they usually start with Is something ...? followed byDo you feel that? We had a whole conversation while I figured out that hubby was right and indeed we were having a quake and I went down the hall to check on dear daughter (and noticed that the clothes in her closet were swinging on the rack) and went back to the kitchen. During most of that time the swaying slowly got harder and harder. Since the biggest earthquakes are also the longest, an earthquake could potentially "ramp up" for a long time into something eventually catastrophic. And it's not like it just quits, either. The earth still moves many times after the main shock.

*****

Just a couple of thoughts: Looking at the WORLD map, there are (of course) dozens of plate boundaries, but the only real active one seems to be the Pacific plate. I know that the motion is different at different parts of the boundary, leading to strike-slip and thrust faults but my brain just kind of cmompresses the whole thing into a general picture that the Pacific plate is, overall, ROTATING counterclockwise.

There was a discussion late last year IIRC about how the "big" earthquakes (>7) tend to occur in 32-year cycles. Last year was the 32nd year. I remember thinking that we might have snuck past "the big one" again! Of course, maybe there's some wobble in that timing.

It's a good reminder that we need to be prepared. I've been telling hubby about my efforts to collect up enough supplies, that the most probable disaster that's going to befall us isn't catastrophic societal collapse but earthquake (well, maybe earthquake followed by societal collapse!)

Hope you got earthquake insurance and an exit plan, Kiki.

Speaking of which, I may or may not have mentioned before, I don't have homeowner's insurance. I got rid of it around 4 years ago when the price went up over $1k/year. Stupid, right?

My heart kind of sank when all of my issues started revealing themselves knowing that I did this. But then I looked deeper into it......

Just like my teeth situation, insurance would not cover a single issue that I currently have. I already knew that about the water, but the ant issue isn't covered either. That's considered a problem that can be prevented with proper maintenance, and not an act of god like a tornado or a tree falling and destroying your roof. I wouldn't have gotten a single dime out of them for any of my current problems.

Go figure, huh?

Well.... Off to Goodwill. Got a carload of really good stuff to give them and it's half price Saturday so hopefully I find some good shirts and jeans.

• Earthquake preparedness: What to do before - and during - a big one

The odds that Southern California will experience another earthquake of magnitude 7 or greater in the next week are now nearly 11%, according to preliminary estimates from seismologists.

And the chances that a quake will surpass the 7.1 temblor that struck near Ridgecrest on Friday night are roughly 8% to 9%, said Caltech seismologist Lucy Jones.

...

The 7.1 quake on Friday night was about 8 times larger than the 6.4 quake on Thursday morning, said Robert Graves, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Pasadena.

Though such quakes would be more likely to occur in the next few days, the shaking could continue for quite some time.

“A magnitude 7 usually has aftershocks that last for years,” Jones said.

Jones said she could not recall a pattern of earthquakes in California where a 6.4 foreshock was followed by a 7.1 event, only to be followed by an even bigger quake.

But that doesn’t mean it can’t happen, she cautioned.

“It is clearly a very energetic sequence, so there’s no reason to think we can’t have more large earthquakes,” she said.

The last time California experienced a quake of this size was in 1999, when the 1999 Hector Mine quake struck the Mojave Desert. There were minor injuries and no deaths.

The years since have been marked by an unusual earthquake drought.

“In California, we expect to have a magnitude 7 once every 10 to 20 years, and the last one was 20 years ago,” Jones said. “Think of this as a return to what California is supposed to be doing.”

KIKI, the scientists have been talking about "The Big One" for the Lower Mainland of BC since I was a child.

First earthquake I experienced I was a child. It happened at night so I was in bed. It woke me up with my bed moving. All my classmates were talking about it the next day and it was on the news of course.

The other two I was an adult. The next one I was in my 30s and had fallen asleep on the couch. The couch moved out from the wall and then moved back. Woke up again but I guessed what was going on.

The next one I was in a shopping mall with my mom. We were sitting in a MacDonald's having coffee when the floor started shaking. 2 young Asian women sitting near us looked around scared and my mom looked at me and I said, "Earthquake" and we went back to our coffee. It lasted a minute or so. Then nothing.

Yeah that's what the news said. People were asking the scientists if the 6 one was big enough to relieve the pressure. The guy said no. That it would take 1,000 earthquakes magnitude 6 or better to do that.

There was a separate thread for the Hawaii Earthquakes. Seems like this topic is good enough for another one.

I lived through numerous quakes in LA & Orange Counties in the 80's, they were ramping up a bit in 1987. I only knew of 2 at the time they were happening, the rest were just news reports. First one I knew about I was sitting in my car in traffic, on a hot day, and it had a soft suspension. I noticed the traffic light was swaying back and forth, since I was waiting for the light to change. It wasn't wind, and I finally figured out it was a quake, but I didn't feel it. The second one was in a late morning, I think a Sunday, and I was on the verge of waking. So I wondered who it was that was giving me an orgasm - because that is what it feels like, you're not fully physically tethered to the earth, weightlessness, familiar disorientation. I was alone, and it wasn't an orgasm, just had the same corrollary sensation. That was when I finally understood "I felt the Earth move" - before that I thought it was just a euphemism for falling in Love, but it was really the same sensation as orgasm.

6ix, with all of your posts about videos which I don't watch, why have I not heard from here about Mini-AOC? Some 8 year old girl named Ava who has received death threats from the Party of Intolerance (Libtards) and had to remove all of her Mini-AOC content for fear of her life and her family's lives (she was doxxed).

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I remember reading about the upcoming devastation in the Seattle area. But it and Vancouver, Victoria, along with Portland are all part of the Cascadia(?) subduction zone. Here in SoCal the two sides of the San Andreas just slide past each other. There, one plate dives all the way under the other. And it seems pretty intuitive why subduction would cause far more devastating earthquakes than sliding plates, but I couldn't tell you the exact mechanism why! Anyway, predictions are that when there finally is a significant subduction earthquake, it'll be like all hell just broke loose.

Yes, Cascadia. That is the name of the coastal mountains.

It will. And up here with being so close to the water there will be Tsunamis which means water damage as well as what the earthquake will cause.

Tore out the back steps leading up to the porch that were falling apart. It was obvious water damage, but I assumed the ants had destroyed it as well. I wasn't disappointed. Now I know where half of the sand under the patio pavers went. It was a goddamned 3D ant farm under there. I've got no less than 15 minutes of animal planet worthy video footage to prove it (if you take the audio out because of all the swearing )

I flattened out the sand until my garbage cans are empty again, then I put a truckload of Triazacide on it and dumped a full gallon of spray poison on top of that.

My new stairs into the back porch are a patio paver and a old plastic milk carton thing.

I finally bit the bullet and did something I was dreading because I needed the piece of mind. I went down into the crawl space and checked out the wood foundation above the brick foundation from front to back between every joist and it all looks good. :)

I freaked myself out though and nearly had a heart attack with it at first. Before I figured out how to get a flashlight with one hand to show what was going on behind the pipes while pushing away insulation with the other hand, it hadn't occured to me the first section I checked out was where the drain pipe from the sump pump went out. I felt back there, sight unseen, and felt a LOT of wood damage and immediately imagined the foundation of my house looked like what my porch looks like. SHIT!!!!!

That wasn't the case though. Everything else checked out fine. When I went back, I realized that part was where the drain went out and the damage is only between those two sections of joist. I think "Uncle Bob" put the hole there for the pipe and just did a super sloppy job of it.

Seriously... Fuck Uncle Bob and his shoddy craftsmanship.

I did notice in spots around the rest of the foundation there was some damaged wood pieces and shavings that I was pulling out with a ton of dust. This had me worried at first, but the wood itself all looks dry and healthy. I strongly believe this is just debris from the original construction that they never bothered to clean up and it had just lie there undisturbed for the last 60 years before I went prodding around today.

I still have no idea what's going on with my roof, but seeing what I've been able to see both underneath the house and by checking out the facia itself while cleaning up debris from the roof, I have no reason to suspect it's ant damage. It might be the abnormal settling of the porch pulling away at the house as it's sinking.

I need to double my efforts to get everything clean and ready for a real estate agent and a "cash for homes" place to check it out and tell me what they think.

Maybe at that point, I'll at least tear down the porch since I can't afford to rebuild it or even stabilize it in any meaningful way that wouldn't potentially leave me open to legal action after selling the thing. Otherwise my option is to try selling it with everything exposed, as-is. I think it would be very foolish for me to try to half ass this and risk that somebody falls through the floor 5 years after I knowingly sell it in the state that it's in.

I'll have to see what a real estate agent says, but I imagine that even without doing any meaningful landscaping after the fact that I'd be adding $15 to $30 thousand bucks to the asking price if the porch was removed, the hole was filled in and that side of the house was re-sided before I sold it. Sure, it would diminish the value of the home to remove that three season room altogether if it was rock solid, but as-is, I think it's just a huge liability that would scare most buyers off and it's just killing the potential sale price.

It would open up my back yard to the world by removing it, and it would make the house look quite a bit smaller from the street (about 20 feet of house frontage would be removed since the shed is also attached at the end), but I could always just put a 6 ft privacy fence in between the new end of the house and the garage... or the new owner could do that... preferably after taking care of the ant problem.

I still don't know what I'm going to do. I absolutely have to get the house clean and do some minor repairs so I can get some people who know about money in here to weigh out my options properly and stop speculating and pulling numbers out of my ass here.

Do Right, Be Right. :)
