Speaking of crooked deals: Money Laundering and Trump

-purchases-related-to-money-laundering.html

The Washington Post reported Sunday that the Trump Organization had spent more than $400 million in cash acquiring properties, often without taking on any debt at all, beginning in 2006. The president’s son Eric Trump told the Post that the simple explanation was that Trump properties threw off so much cash, there was no need to borrow. Ha-ha-ha, Eric! Good joke! Getting back to how straight businesses run: even if Eric is truthful, experts agree, that’s weird.

Real estate buyers usually like to spend as little of their own cash as possible. Big purchases often come with massive loans—like the $1.2 billion mortgage Kushner Cos. took out on its flagship 666 5th Ave. skyscraper when the president’s son-in-law purchased the building in 2007. This was especially true of Donald Trump, a self-styled “King of Debt” who managed to escape disaster in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in part because so little of his own money was invested in the casinos he ran there. And never has it been more true than during the past decade, a period during which historically low interest rates made borrowing money cheaper than ever.

There are a few reasons a company might want to buy entirely with cash. Trouble with lenders is one of them. Cash purchases are important if you need to move quickly, something you see with money going into red-hot housing markets like Silicon Valley and out of insecure economies like China and Venezuela. And then, of course, there is the reason that the president’s former chief adviser, Steve Bannon, told Michael Wolff was at the center of the Mueller inquiry: money laundering.

Claims of money laundering have long swirled around the purchases made at Trump properties. In November, Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson—whose firm researched Trump at the behest of the conservative Washington Free Beacon, and later hired Christopher Steele to produce the now-infamous opposition research dossier—told a House panel that the firm saw condo sales in Trump buildings that “were suggestive of money-laundering.”

Time was money got laundered through such cash-intensive businesses as convenience stores, restaurants, parking garages, and retail. The basic idea is this: If you have a suitcase with $1 million in drug trade profits and you have a pizza place that makes no money, you tell the IRS the pizza place made $1 million, and you empty the suitcase into the cash register. Dirty money made clean through pizza. Or, in the case of Baltimore drug kingpin Avon Barksdale in The Wire, a photocopying business.

As Avon’s consigliere Stringer Bell realized, however, real estate can make a superior vessel. An investigation by BuzzFeed News found Trump buildings attracted an enormous number of all-cash purchases by shell companies, two characteristics considered red flags for money laundering. In a hypothetical money-laundering condo purchase made by a shell company, a buyer would endow an anodyne-sounding LLC with profits from illicit proceedings—cocaine trafficking, for example. Two years later, the LLC sells the property to any old joe, and the money—which is now “clean,” sourced from a legitimate real estate transaction—can be deposited into a U.S. bank account or wherever else its owner wants to put it.

Jewel, you will not like this story, either:

Rep. Devin Nunes has lately taken to demanding that the Justice Department turn over records of the Mueller investigation. For obvious reasons, records of active investigations are normally confidential since the FBI doesn’t want to (a) hurt innocent people who may get caught in their net and (b) doesn’t want to alert the guilty to what they’re doing. Nunes, of course, would very much like to alert the guilty, which is why he wants this stuff. He says he wants it in order to conduct oversight on possible misconduct by Mueller, but I think we can safely laugh that off.

All that is bad enough. But it gets worse:
Quote:

Last Wednesday, senior FBI and national intelligence officials relayed an urgent message to the White House: Information being sought by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes could endanger a top-secret intelligence source….After the White House sided with the department’s decision to refuse the request, Nunes (R-Calif.) publicly vented his frustration, saying Sunday that he may try to hold Sessions in contempt for refusing to comply.

….For the intelligence agencies, Nunes’s request threatened to cross a red line of compromising sources and methods of U.S. intelligence-gathering, according to people familiar with their views. Intelligence officials fear that providing even a redacted version of the information Nunes seeks could expose that person and damage relationships with other countries that serve as U.S. intelligence partners.

….On Tuesday, House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R.-Wis.) said he had not discussed the matter with Nunes but added that he expected congressional subpoenas to be enforced. “We expect the administration to comply with our document requests,” Ryan said.

So there you go. You can decide for yourself whether you believe the intelligence community, but they claim that turning over these docs could get people killed. Nunes, however, is so obsessed with covering for Donald Trump that he doesn’t care. He’s the ringleader of the conservative claim that the Mueller probe is a liberal fraud designed to bring down a Republican president, and if that means pretending that the FBI, CIA, NSA, and every other federal agency is corrupt, so be it. If it means leaking information that could get people killed, that’s probably OK too.

And Paul Ryan is perfectly fine with this. Welcome to the Republican Party in 2018.

So why are we finding out about this in WaPo? Is this just ANOTHER leak of classified info? Or just more propaganda?

In my opinion, Signym, you are a lying sack of shit. If you have proof you and Trump are not, you are welcome to post it. Moving on to Trump:

Trump’s tax returns will reveal who is paying him; congressional Republicans don’t want to know.

Thanks to Stormy Daniels’s attorney, Michael Avenatti, we learned last night that Michael Cohen’s shell company, Essential Consultants LLC, whose existence came to light as the vehicle for the hush money payments to Daniels, also had considerable income from Russian billionaire Viktor Vekselberg as well as corporations including AT&T and Novartis.

This raises any number of possible legal and political questions — including the disturbing but very real possibility that under currently prevailing legal standards, there’s nothing actually illegal about putting cash into the president’s fixer’s slush fund and hoping to gain political access in exchange.

But it also serves as a reminder of the fundamentally corrupt setup of the Trump administration and Donald Trump’s business interests.

In a normal presidency, it would be very difficult to make large, secret cash payments to the president of the United States as a means of currying favor with him. You could donate to his reelection campaign, but that would have to be disclosed. And you could hire people who you believe to have a relationship with him in hopes that they can peddle influence on your behalf (as AT&T and Novartis apparently did with Cohen), but it might not work.

But there would be basically no way to directly pay the president in secret. Trump has changed that. It’s completely unclear how Avenatti came to be in possession of the documents that reveal the payments to Essential Consultants, but it came about due to some kind of leak. Had they not leaked, we would still be in the dark. And since no financial documents related to any of the many LLCs that Trump controls personally have leaked, we have no idea who is paying him or why.

Replying to the scrupulously honest (I mock) Signym:

In a new statement (their third) Novartis says they paid $1.2 million to Michael Cohen, had one meeting with him and determined he would be "unable to provide the services that Novartis had anticipated related to US healthcare policy matters."

9:27 AM - 9 May 2018
https://twitter.com/Tom_Winter/status/994252653722046465

Man, does this deserve some scrutiny from the SEC. Why would anyone think that Donald Trump’s famously obnoxious bagman and fixer had any expertise in US health care policy? Answer: No one does. Why would Novartis hold one meeting and then pay Cohen $1.2 million anyway? Answer: As a bribe, more or less. What other possibility is there?

There’s a sense in which I sympathize with Novartis here. Trump has made it crystal clear that he’s a crudely transactional politician. If you want something, you have to give him something. If you praise him, he’ll refrain from attacking you. If you cross him, he’ll do his best to destroy you. As a result, Trump is the object of lots of praise because everyone knows this is how you stay on his good side. Then everyone hears the praise, and they assume Trump must be doing a good job. This is how cults of personality work in early stage autocracies.

Ditto for the bribes. You take a look at what Trump does to companies he’s annoyed with—Comcast, Boeing, Amazon, etc.—and who needs the grief? Just hire the insider dude for “consulting” and be done with it. Just praise Trump and move on. It’s what companies do in banana republics around the world, and America is lately little more than a really big banana republic.

FBI is not a Constitutional creation. Department of Injustice is not a Constitutional creation.
They are creations of Congress. As such, Congress has Oversight Authority. They must answer to both Congress and Commander in Chief (Chief Executive of The Executive Branch, where they reside).

All of your Spin to Usurp and Subvert The Constitution by conferring unrestricted Authority and dictatorial powers to Mueller does not change the facts.
They have repeatedly proven that their proclaimed "National Security Secrets" are merely their infantile embarrassments over getting caught lying to everybody. Only the most delusional can't see that Mueller's Witch Hunt Fishing Expedition is nothing more than Liberal Fraud.

I bring this up again because I want to reiterate what I posted BEFORE the election: Ethically, TRUMP AND HILLARY WERE ABOUT THE SAME. With maybe Trump having a slight edge because his financial depredations weren't quite on the same grand scale, and his personal failings were about on-par. 'Cause IMHO Hillary is just as skeezy as Trump.

To me, the critical difference is WHOSE INTERESTS each candidate represented. Hillary represented the interests and warmongering of the globalist financial elite and the (current) deep state which enforced the interests of the globalist elite. Trump represented the nationalist elite, and clearly the deep state has been gunning for him since before his election.

While I knew that he didn't have a viable plan to restore the American economy - AND I SAID SO QUITE OFTEN - at least he would pull us out of those international trade deals, reduce illegal immigration, and stop making war with Russia (and hopefully pull back our military involvement from other places around the world.) In any case, I voted for a loose cannon over "more of the same" and I think I got about what I voted for, even including Trump's apparently irrational grotch against Iran, which I pointed out AT THE TIME was a problem for me.

Did you know Cohen was getting money from Vekselberg? Do you know if any of that money went to Trump? Do you know what Mueller knows? I have no idea, do you? If you don't - and I know you don't - you can't possibly say "there is no evidence." Unless of course...

You better do it soon.

It appears on the front page of the RWED now there is a topic that can no longer be accessed.

Either the fff.net gremlins got to it, or "JJ" figured out how to shut down access to threads he creates.

Hey, I ASKED THUGR to add a title to his post, I pointed out the problem ...

Quote:

The original thread does not have a title. Without a title I (and I presume most people) can't access it directly, only thru this link. However, the link as posted by JSF has a problem: The capital "W" at the beginning of www needs to be replaced by lower-case "w" otherwise you will probably get an error message.
http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=62404

... and even gave THUGR INSTRUCTIONS on how to fix it.
Quote:

THUGR: Please "Edit thread" to add a title. (As the author of this thread you have the permissions to do so.) Look to the right of the thread, there is a "edit thread" button, click on that and it will allow you to add a title.

WITHOUT A TITLE, PEOPLE CANNOT ACCESS THIS THREAD DIRECTLY.

http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=62404

I can't help it if THUGR is too stupid to fix his own post (because he posted it without a title), but you can access it thru the link posted by JSF http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=62404

You may not have been here for the "title wars", but at one time ANYONE could change the title of a thread. Once that was discovered, Haken changed the permissions for that field to exclude anyone but the author of the thread itself. Now, AFAIK, only the author (in this case "JJ"/THUGR) can change the title of the thread.

THUGR, it's up to you. If you want people to be able to access THAT THREAD directly, YOU have to add a title to the thread. If you don't, the problem is all on you, not anyone else.

How Trump’s team worked the Trump Moscow deal during the presidential campaign

May 17, 2018

www.buzzfeed.com/anthonycormier/trump-moscow-micheal-cohen-felix-sater
-campaign

On the day of the third Republican presidential debate, Trump personally signed the letter of intent.

All through the hot summer campaign of 2016, as Donald Trump and his aides dismissed talk of unseemly ties to Moscow, two of his key business partners were working furiously on a secret track: negotiations to build what would have been the tallest building in Europe and an icon of the Trump empire — the Trump World Tower Moscow.

Talks to construct the 100-story building continued even as the presidential candidate alternately bragged about his relationship with Vladimir Putin and rejected suggestions of Russian influence, and as Russian agents worked to sway US public opinion on Trump’s behalf.

While fragments of the Trump Moscow venture have trickled out — most recently in a report last night by Yahoo News — this is the definitive story of the Moscow tower, told from a trove of emails, text messages, congressional testimony, architectural renderings, and other documents obtained exclusively by BuzzFeed News, as well as interviews with key players and investigators. The documents reveal a detailed and plausible plan, well-connected Russian counterparts, and an effort that extended from spearfishing with a Russian developer on a private island to planning for a mid-campaign trip to Moscow for the presidential candidate himself.

The tower — a sheer, glass-encased obelisk situated on a river — would have soared above every other building in Moscow, the architectural drawings show. And the sharply angled skyscraper would have climaxed in a diamond-shaped pinnacle emblazoned with the word “Trump,” putting his name atop the continent’s tallest structure.

Michael Cohen, the president’s embattled personal fixer, and Felix Sater, who helped negotiate deals around the world for Trump, led the effort. Working quietly behind the scenes, they tried to arrange a sit-down between Trump and Putin, the documents show. Those efforts ultimately fizzled. But the audacious venture has been a keen focus of federal investigators trying to determine if the Trump campaign colluded with the Kremlin. Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating the Trump-Russia case, helped nail New York mob boss John Gotti, the gangster known as the “Teflon Don.”

One of the most important things to understand about Donald Trump, the con man and hustler who happens to be president, is that he comes from the mob-tinged New York real estate industry and knows exactly what happened to Gotti and other mob bosses felled by racketeering prosecutions waged by the likes of Mueller.

Trump knows that Mueller is now conducting the same kind of racketeering investigation in the Trump-Russia case, and it frightens him.

Mueller is approaching his Trump-Russia investigation in the same way he and his fellow Justice Department prosecutors went after Gotti and other mobsters. He is rolling up Trump loyalists. He is slowly but surely climbing the ladder from low-level operatives to more prominent figures, and holding the threat of prison over their heads to get them to flip and talk about people higher up the ladder. Eventually, Mueller’s racketeering case will make its way to Trump.

Whenever Mueller seems to be making progress, Trump tries to distract. That is why a desperate Trump has been turning to crazed loyalists like Rudy Giuliani to go on cable news and spout incoherent attacks on the Mueller investigation. And it explains why Trump and his minions are now trying to focus the public’s attention on the FBI’s use of an informant to falsely claim that Trump was illegally spied on by the purported “deep state” during the 2016 campaign. To be sure, there is plenty of ugly history behind the FBI’s use of informants. In the 1960s, the FBI infiltrated the anti-war movement and other political organizations; more recently, it has used informants to entrap people in ginned-up terrorism cases.

But there is no evidence that the FBI engaged in any of those abusive tactics in the Trump-Russia investigation. Trump simply wants to depict himself as the victim of partisan intelligence operatives so that he can discredit and distract from Mueller’s actual investigation. It is the same kind of ploy he tried last year, when he claimed that he had been wiretapped.

In fact, the stunning number of very public actions taken by Trump to distract from or impede the Russia inquiry – a number that grows almost daily — suggests that he has been desperate to make the investigation go away from the moment it began.

I believe that it is obvious – and has been for more than a year – that Trump is doing everything he can to obstruct any investigation into evidence of collusion between his campaign and Russia in the 2016 presidential election. If that means discrediting the FBI, the Justice Department, and other government agencies, Trump will do it. He is quite willing to destroy crucial governmental checks and balances to impede the investigation.

Still No Evidence.
And Trump pointing out the FBI use of an illegal Spy is supposedly a false claim of the same FBI using the very same Illegal Spy.
Which makes a valid rationalization for Mueller, FBI, DoJ to hide their own crimes and constantly obstruct Congressional or Executive oversight of the crimes they committed and conspired to commit.
And Still they have No Evidence.

Some of us here have posted stories that concerned us from many of these different sources. The mainstream media we rely on is very well represented in this list.

To you, SIG, Jack, kiki and so on, this list of news outlets represents fake news. So, there's no place left for you to get your information from asshole. You guys dispute what they report daily in these threads. You do so without presenting any type of informed rebuttal. Instead what you post is ignorant bullshit. Fake news propaganda form zerohedge, facebook and twitter.

You're a joke JSF and a troll. And not a very good one.

Whatever You Think Of The Trump-Russia Investigation, Whistleblower Reality Winner Deserves Your Support
https://theintercept.com/2018/06/02/reality-winner-whistleblower-witho
ut-constituency
/

By this weekend, Reality Winner, the former NSA contractor accused of releasing national security information to the media, will have been in jail for more than a full year without being convicted of a crime. Her trial, originally scheduled for October 2017, has been pushed back multiple times and is now on the docket for October 2018. It’s anyone’s guess whether the case will drag on even longer.

Something curious has happened along the way: Winner’s case fell out of the public consciousness. National media pays scant attention to her plight, and many advocates from the left to the center of the political spectrum — all of whom should have ample reason to loudly protest the many injustices in her case — have been largely silent.

The story of Russian interference in the election has dominated front-page headlines for a year. Despite being consistently the most covered news story of the Trump presidency — with a seemingly avid readership — a whistleblower accused of releasing a top-secret National Security Agency document that gave the public an unprecedented window into how U.S. intelligence agencies think Russia tried to interfere has been all but forgotten.

Winner’s case is a miscarriage of justice. While powerful Washington figures have gotten off with a slap on the wrist for leaking classified information, Winner remains behind bars after being denied bail on extremely dubious grounds. Up until last month, when lawyer Alex van der Zwaan reported to prison to serve a 30-day sentence related to making false statements in the special counsel investigation, Winner was the only person with any relation to the Russian interference scandal in jail — and she has been there for a year.

Democrats and anti-Trump centrists should know better than anyone, thanks to the Hillary Clinton email server scandal, how warped and broken our classification system is — that the “national security risks” proffered by the intelligence community rarely, if ever, hold water. It should be obvious that no one should be prosecuted for trying to alert the public about potential vulnerabilities in our electoral process.

Still no idea what Mueller knows, do ya?

And G, no concerns whatsoever that Trumps trips to Mar a Lago are costing the taxpayers more than the Mueller investigation. That's a troll for ya.

Fact-checking President Trump’s attacks on the cost of Mueller’s investigation

An independent counsel investigation into the Whitewater dispute, the Monica Lewinsky scandal and other Clinton issues had cost $59.9 million. The probe was led at first by Kenneth Starr and then passed on to Robert W. Ray. The $59.9 million total was the highest ever, in raw dollars, after the $47.4 million spent by Lawrence E. Walsh in the 1980s Iran-contra inquiry. (Adjusting for inflation, the Iran-contra probe was probably more costly.)

$17 Million wasted on Loitering and Littering from 10 years ago.

Still no evidence.

Our lynch mob doesn't need no stinkin' evidence!

SECOND is a troll because it constantly misrepresents what people post, fails to address their actual positions, and resorts to personal attacks when its brain isn't working (which is most of the time).

I think people should read these indictments - the genuine originals - rather than continue to steep their brains in US media swill. https://www.justice.gov/sco

In regards to the non-Russian nationals like Manafort, zero charges have anything to do with Trump or the election.

Yet.

Watergate took 2 years. People are pleading guilty, going to jail and agreeing to testify.

You're just repeating yourself - I'll repeat my answer: You have no idea what further indictments are getting to rain down on Manafort. You have no idea what the charges are for beyond their type and general description. "Money laundering" - for what in return, from whom?

Do you know the details of counts 5 - 7 and their circumstances exactly:

COUNT FIVE (False Statements)
46. Paragraphs 1 through 36 and paragraph 45 are incorporated here.

"corruptly persuade another person" to do what? Do you know?
"fraudulent statements" about what?
etc, etc

Same smoke, same Kiki
