I like Diablo 3...

But, article may have some honest points about flaws (I'm guessing the online element got hammered), so I'll read it when I get home.

Oh indeed, especially when it's compounded by that quiet hiss and my mic going silent as I have a "moment"...
And there's you, chugging along in the wake of epic destruction looking so unthreatening they don't even SHOOT at you.

That always did amuse me.

I am never, ever, EVER buying a single player game that requires me to beg someone elses permission, no way, no how, and don't think the nightmare ends here, just wait till they dump the authentication servers entire on you, reducing your $64 game to a coaster, so they can sell you Diablo IV... kinda like EA does.

Fuck That Noise.

That's an intersting article. Actually, a lot of Cracked articles are interesting, if you peel off the layers of juvenile humor. I miss having a job where I could catch up on Cracked articles during down time.

I agree with everything he said.

I'm playing first Torchlight on the broken XBox 360 that my brother gave me. The DVD tray doesn't work anymore, but I just found out from him that you don't need a LIVE subscription to pay for games (probably bad news that I found THAT out!!!!). When I retire my character and I'm able to make a personalized and completely maxed-out weapon from her playthrough called "Hooker's Epic Spooge-Cannon of Desecration" that will be available for use with any new character I create, I guess I should be thankful that Torchlight didn't go the way Diablo III did for the single player.

The only thing I'm worried about is that the HESCoD will not be able to carry over to Torchlight II when it's finally released on the XBox360..... At the very least, they should give you the option of changing the name of it so it makes the transfer (assuming that you can transfer the Retired Hero's weapon from the first game).

Hell... they let me change my Profile name, although I was pissed when I lost any record of achievements after doing so. My original name was something like "PuneK00n" and I had the icon of a monkey eating a bananna. It was just a silly name, and I NEVER logged into an online game with anybody. Anytime I play any game where you can name the characters, I always give them juvenile names. After about 2 years they flagged that name as inappropriate. I chuckle to this day wondering what was more offensive.... POON or COON?????

What makes it even funnier is the random name they generated for me was so hilarious that I chose to not change it. My new XBox gamertag is UnderhungPuppyXX (XX being some numbers I don't remember). LOL..... UnderhungPuppy. How is that any better than my original name?????

It's pretty much fixed. Haven't had any connection issues since Tuesday. It was only the first day that they had problems, they didn't have enough servers to handle the load. It was to be expected.

EDIT: so yeah, the article was just about the first day server issues. I got the game from a contract since I was paying for WoW anyway, so it was basically free, and one day out of the year or so or more of play I'm going to get out of this is a pittance.

Anyway, I didn't mind. Some hiccups were inevitable, and I still got to play every day I've had it.

Speaking of playing terrible games, I'm still playing swtor.

I guess I just want to see some of the end stories. But, in any case, both Mass Effect and swtor have kind of a problem that I've noticed, because for some reason Bioware likes to do this, but for some reason your companions in the games are romanceable. It's as horrible as it sounds. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RomanticPlotTumor

I finally got off Coruscant with my smuggler, and here's this guy written as upstanding and kind and I CAN'T STAND HIM. Every time I talk to him I have to take a deep breath and it usually talks multiple tries to even get through a conversation. That is when the dialogue even makes sense, which it doesn't always.

And yet all the times, there's these flirt options, and I can not understand the player creature that would ever pursue those options. There came a point where you can prevent any future romance arc from developing, and when I got there I found I couldn't even bring myself to attempt the alternative.

I suspect all the other romance plots will be equally awkward and poorly written and disturbing. ._. I am going to avoid them all like turret auto-fire.

So, Jack, in regards to Bioware games like Mass Effect, just watch out for that.

Hehe......

Did you ever play Fable?

I'm sure the answer is yes

Now, did you ever play Fable and have a roll count of kills of Guards that exceeded your kill count of Hobbes at the end?????

I guessed not... lol

Short of actual, physical, sexual stimulation, which I'm sure even the next generation of VG consoles is severly lacking in, what would ever possess you to assume I'd ever bother taking a NPC mindless robot of a Mate if it didn't give me some Ultimate Weapon that would make all of the Hobbes run away from me?

That being said, I did marry Lady Grey, simply because it was a rather large side-quest at the time. In the end though, totally not worth the trouble.....

Sorry Lady Grey, it's time for a divorce.....

It's not you, it's me.....

I can't find a Girl in Real Life striking enough to get me to live togehter and put up with all of her bullshit while she nags about mine. I don't believe the AI in your XBox 360 core is cabable enough of bridging that gap.

Come back to me 20 years from now when XBox5ive is launched, mmmmmmmmmmm kay?

Omigosh. You're like the first person who has agreed with me Jack. Everyone else LIKES the romance and I don't understand it at all.

WHY does anyone want a romance plot in a roleplaying game? The main character is YOU, which means it's like you're personally involved in it and actively pursuing the characters, just like everyone else playing the game.

And Bioware for some reason thinks that they need their romance plots to be more and more in your face right from the get go, it's driving me crazy.

Probably the main problem I have with them, apart from the times when it's just sheer personality conflicts, is that they're all kinda inappropriate. Every one of your companions is beholden to you, they're your employees, or military underlings, or in the case of Jedi/Sith, your apprentices.

You can like it, but every time it comes up it's just hella uncomfortable for me. The smuggler companion just gets the additional distinction of making me have to clamp down the aggravation due to him being a white knight and me being a anti-romance snarky stubborn tomboy.

Omigosh back to you BYTE

The reason that nobody wants a romance plot in a videogame today is because AI is stupid. The ONLY people who would get off to that type of thing are meglaomaniacs who can totally Domme their wives (or husbands). I've actually seen in FAQs that the way to get Skorne's Bow, the ONLY item I've never been able to get in the game, was to sacrifice NPCs and married wives at a certain hour of day to get it.

I'm sure all that Evil Succubus probably does a TON of damage to our youth though....

I remember fantasizing about doing anything the Dark Queen from Battletoads told me to do back in the NES days

That was when I was 12, and the only other exciting thing in the media back then besides a real relationship for me was when the new Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition came every year.

I shiver to imagine what I'd be today if I grew up with YouTube at that age.......

Hahhaha, battletoads, I actually played that, I could NOT get past that first level you were riding through that chutes on that jetski.

Well, I don't think that people who are into it necessarily just want someone to dominate. But there are just a host of problems with in-game NPC romance stories, and all of them make me weirded out.

I mean, if you think about it, that companion character who you've put so much time into hearing their story and courting, he or she has been with a million other people or more. And if it's an MMORPG, everyone in the game assumes you're having some kind of gooey smooch fests with the character if you're stuck running around with them. And some of those other people have written really dirty fanfic about themselves and their favourite characters. It's beyond awkward.

Imagine if you will that every eighth person you meet in the game is an ex of this person you're involved with. That is the level of WTFery you're up against.

Eventually I shoved a face-covering helmet over the one guy's head - more armor for him, don't have to look at him for me, clear and obvious message to anyone who sees me with him that I don't really like him much, it's win-win.

Hello,

Well, that's sometimes the case. If you are playing someone of questionable morals, this isn't a problem. If you are playing someone ethical then it is. I like having the choices available. In fact, I think every character interaction should have a flirt option in an RPG. I could see myself playing someone who uses relationships to manipulate people, and would have sex with anyone, male or female, old or young, ugly or beautiful, if it got him to his goals. (I'd have played a Sith this way, for instance.)

The Jedi, of course, would only have relationships (against the rules of his order) for true love. He'd probably date another Jedi simply because those are the only people around him that he'd regularly interact with.

Soldiers? Probably not kosher to date an underling.

Mercs/Traders? Could go in any direction.

I couldn't stand Corso either.
My Bounty Hunter never woulda had that problem given she's four-plus crazy and psychotic.

The ONLY romance option in a game lately I mighta went for was actually in Skyrim, as my character was female and I really did kind of take a shine to Farengar Secret-Fire, he was laid back, mildly snarky, and apolitical - and we kind of hit it off right up front when he asked about the runestone and I handed it to him having already collected it cause it looked important, then he offered suggestions and commentary on my enchanting - he just came off as a really decent sort of guy, good-hearted, yanno ?
And of COURSE, the game does not offer that as an option.

I dunno, he just seems a pretty cool dude.

Most of the really interesting characters in most games seem to be doing just fine without the PC. Maybe that's what makes them interesting.

Also, either I'm terrible at PC rail shooters, or a laptop touchpad is. I know I was pretty good at star fox 64?

Haha... you didn't miss much byte.

I've tried beating that goddamned game on NES for about 20 years now. Even in this day and age when I can play it on my XBox with save states and no worries about only 3 "continues" and starting over, it just gets all that more impossible. To this day, I've never seen the end of Battletoads, and I know it's out there on YouTube, but I will finally beat that game on my own and not have to watch somebody else beat it someday!

Others may disagree here, but of the NES games I've ever played, Battletoads is only matched in difficulty by Snake Rattle 'n Roll. Both games start out so awesome, but then they get so ridiculously hard really quick that today's youth would never spend more than 10 minutes on them.

The only WORTHY series with a gripping storyline and a hard, but beatable curve I've ever beaten legitimately on the NES without cheats, was Castlevaina.

By far, the first CV was the hardest since there were limited continues and no save states, and the 2nd was the easiest because you could level up and bosses were a joke, but overall, even better than Super Mario Bros series in my mind...

SMB is a very close second though. If there were any RPG elements in any of the titles and just a bit more story I'd have voted for it instead of Castlevania.

As for your romantic interactions in the past with CGI, I can't comment since I've no experience in such pursuits. I'm only speaking to the mindless CGI in a one-player game who's intelligence would insult a zombie.

I CAN'T PLAY ONE SECOND IN AN ONLINE MMORPG!!!!! IT WOULD ABSOLUTELY CONSUME MY LIFE!!!!

I spend enough time here at FFF.net as it is. I couldn't imagine how much time I'd burn up if I could have conversations like these 24/7 while hacking bad guys....

BTW... at least the fugly dude you covered up with a helmet was a real guy.....

I wouldn't even want to know the real statistics of anybody I've spoken with online in any forum who claimed they were female but had junk-in-front-of-the-trunk....
