"Run the test again,' Simon yelled at his helpless looking friend, Dr. Alex Channing. "I did before I came out here Simon, I ran the test three times for your benefit," he sat back in his chair. "I wish it was better news, but the test results, Simon, they're definitive." "I can't go home and tell my wife I'm sterile there's no way in hell," he stood up. "Not after all the tears and the heartache and the planning! She's planned the names Alex, I can't just dash her dreams like that." Simon collapsed back into the chair and sighed. He sat there silent and lost in thought for a second. Alex busied himself by shuffling some papers. "I need to know how this happened," Simon said suddenly. "It could have been a number of things, a genetic anomaly, a viral infection," he said. "I want you to request my medical records," Simon demanded and Alex shook his head. "Simon if I request your records thats going to send red flags straight to the Alliance," he said and Simon shook his head. "Ask Jeremiah to do it, he's a coroner, he can say he found a body that he thinks might be me, they'll send him the records and then he can send them to you," Simon stood up. "For what purpose Simon? It won't change anything," Alex argued as Simon put on his coat. "I've always felt like there was something my parents were hiding about me other than what they did to River. When you get the records, check them for genetic manipulation," Simon said and then left leaving Alex confused. After a moment he called Jeremiah. "Yes that's Tam, T-as in Tom, A-as in Adam M-as in Mary," he said. ~

"I need more time here," Simon looked like a steaming pile of go se. He had bags under his eyes his hair wasn't combed he hadn't shaved since he left Serenity. Mal sat back in the pilot's chair and shook his head. " You need to get back to Serenity," Mal said earnestly. "You look like hell and your wife is a basket case with worry." "I can't come back right now. It complicated." "More complicated than the Alliance getting wind of you pi-gu sitting pretty on one of their Core worlds?" "Don't worry I have it handled," Simon sighed. "Yeah, and you leave me to tell your wife." "Just--" he sighed running his hands over his face. "Tell her I love her." Mal nodded, slowly. "Watch your pi-gu," he sighed and then logged out. Simon gathered up his fake ids and a transport ticket. He was going to Osiris to see his parents they had a lot of explaining to do he thought as he picked uphis medical file. ~ "What do you mean a few more days? Every day out there is a day too long!" Kaylee cried. "He wanted me to tell you that he loves you," Mal said and Kaylee wiped her tears. Mal hugged her, he hated to see his adopted little sister in so much pain. "I don't wanna be a widow, Mal," she sniffed. Mal put his hands on her shoulders, "Simon'll be okay." "That's what everybody keeps telling me, everyone 'cept River." Kaylee sat on her bed. "River don't even talk to me bout Simon." "She's just being a good sister in law, you and Simon got enough to deal with, you don't need a reader stirring things up." "It's not that, she knows something bad is coming. She feels it, just like I do," she cried. "Look bao bei, we've gotten through tight parts before, we'll do it again, dong ma?" Mal squeezed her shoulders and Kaylee nodded. They did get through the tight parts, but a two important members of their family got left behind, Kaylee thought as Mal left her.

~ "Jayne!" River woke up in a panic, screaming so loud she could wake the entire verse. It sent Jayne jumping nearly to the ceiling of their shuttle scrambling naked as the day he was born for his trusty Marybelle, six shooter, he kept on the nightstand. He looked around frantically, side to side, then around in a circle. He banged his toe on the edge of the bed. "Ta ma de!" he cursed and hopped, one hand holding toe the other still holding Mary Belle. After a tense thrity seconds he put the gun down and gave his intended a harsh look. "Gorram it, River!" He began climbing back into bed. He was on his knees in the middle of the bed when she threw herself into his arms tears were streaming down her face. It took him only a moment to realize she was crying, it took him half of that for his anger to vanish. He put his hands in her hair, wrapping his strong arms around her. "What's wrong, bao bei?" he out Marybelle on back on the nightstand. "I don't want to lose you," she wept. Jayne took her chin in his hand, he tilted her lips towards his and kissed her, " I ain't going any where." "You might not have a choice," she tucked her head under his chin. He rubbed her bare back. Suddenly unnerved. "What did you see, girl?" he asked and she clung to him tighter. "Red," she whispered. "I saw red." "Well hell, that could be anything, that could be a paper cut for God's sake," Jayne joked and River pulled away from him, lying on the bed her back to him, her hands over the life she new was forming inside of her. "This girl is not amused," she took his hand pulling him down gently so he could spoon her. He kissed the back over her neck and she guided his hand over her abdomen. "Our child is growing, Jayne. Tiny little cells are dividing over and over again, multiplying as we speak," she said and Jayne's eyes went wide. "You can't possibly know that for sure," Jayne said and River turned to him giving him the "don't be a boob look". "Well maybe you can," he relented and then placed his hand protectively over her stomach. Jayne was quiet as the news sunk in, he was going to be someone's Pa. River smiled as she heard his very loud thoughts coming from him.Am I going to be a good father?, Will it be a boy? I hope it's a boy. The Cobb name will go on! Ai ya, I love her so much, I wonder who'll he'll favor. River smiled at his thoughts. Then her mind flashed to his face covered in red. He will not see his son, She shivered and Jayne held her closer. A tear rolled down her cheek. "I love you," he whispered feeling the tension in her body. Knowing it was because she was still shaken from her dream. "I love you, too," she said and Jayne rubbed her abdomen and drifted off to sleep. He was dreaming of children with a smile on his face. "I'll do whatever I have to protect you," River whispered.
