Chapter 2- The Repercussions

The repercussions of what they did, hadn't hit either of them until supper. When they were around the others. Simon was extra cordial to Jayne, which made him feel really uncomfortable considering had had just sexed River. He couldn't even look at River because he kept having flashes about the way she looked while he made love to her. She was amazing. Much better than he could ever imagine. They caught each others eyes and then looked away.

"How are you feeling, River?" Mal asked and River looked startled for a second.

"I am within the correct parameters," she answered and then she looked at Jayne and blushed which made him shift uncomfortably.

"You were acting a little bit off earlier," Mal said.

"Mei, mei, maybe after we eat I can check you out," Simon said.

"No, need Doc, your sister was just bored," Jayne said, more worried that if Simon checked her out that he'd find the hickeys he had placed all over her body.

"And how would you know what's the matter with River, Oh ye great pillar of wisdom?" Mal asked and Jayne gave him his coldest smirk.

"I asked her, she told me she was bored, we played cards, the end," Jayne said and Mal sat back in his chair.

"Well I hope she ain't take all your money like she did me," Kaylee joked to break the tension coming from the two oldest males.

"I am proficient at card playing," River hunched her shoulders.

"You're proficient at being a reader," Kaylee shot back with a smile.

"I do not cheat," River stuck out her tongue and Jayne grinned.

"That's what you get for playing cards with a bona fide reader. There's always suspicion ," Zoe laughed and then tensed up. " The baby's been real active the last few days," she said and Simon went around the table to her.

"Well, it's almost time, any day now really," Simon said, placing his hands on her belly. "It feels like he dropped into position. I'll check later after supper," Simon said, smiling at Zoe.

"Thank God," she grinned.

"Then we can get out of the black, " Inara sighed. "We can go to a market, get some fresh air."

"Yeah and make some money," Jayne grumbled.

"We do need some parts for Serenity," Kaylee added.

"And once the baby's born we are going to need more medical supplies," Simon mentioned.

Jayne laughed suddenly drawing everyone's attention.

"What's so funny?" Mal asked annoyed.

"Nothing I just thought I was the only one going stark raving mad on this boat," he grinned and shoveled down the rest of his mash.

After supper Jayne went back to clean up his workout area, something he failed to do earlier. He was stacking the weights back in their holders when Inara appeared on the stairs. She said nothing, she just waited for Jayne to realize she was there.

"You got tired of Mal, already? I'm not the Capt. of this boat, I can't afford you," he said to her not looking at her as he continued to clean up. Inara ignored his insult with a smile.

"Actually the most peculiar thing happened to me this afternoon. I was redecorating my new quarters when I realized I left my favorite incense holder in my shuttle." she began and Jayne tensed. "Even more peculiar was that someone had resequenced the code on the door lock. I was about to get Mal to force open the door when I heard, and I do quote 'Ai ya, River, that's so good.'" she smirked and he sighed and put his head down.

"Your point?" Jayne asked and Inara walked over to him.

"My point is this, I didn't stop what was going on in there because I realized that she was a woman and it was her choice. She choose you Jayne, she gave something to you that is precious. Be careful with her." Inara walked up the stairs.

"You ain't telling Mal?"he asked her before she reached the catwalk.

"It's not my place to tell him, but if you hurt her, all bets are off," Inara smiled.

Jayne shook his head as he watched Inara walk away and made a hard call, "It won't happen again."
