Didn't paint anything today. Didn't really have time anyhow. It's going to start raining here soon. It was nearly 70 degrees today for hours while I was out there sanding, but by the end of my time out there it dropped 20 degrees in about 15 minutes.

The 3 pieces I had left to do were by far the worst and really needed to be cleaned up good, so they took longer than the 4 pieces i did yesterday. But I did find a bunch of quarter round that needed cleaning and did all of that too. Most of it I won't need now, but I know for sure one of them is for the cabinet in the kitchen next to the stove. I knew I still had that piece but always wondered where it went to.

That should be it for sanding trim now for a very long time. The only trim I still have that could be sanded down at some point is all the actual baseboard and the door sides in the basement, and I don't imagine that would be going up for any reason any time soon, even if by some miracle I were able to manage to mitigate every possible flood issue... some of which like the city shutting down storm drains that are completely out of control and wouldn't ever be fixed unless millions were spent on more infrastructure.

To me, that's good news for now. Sanding dirty ass trim is a crap job even with power tools and a warm sunny day.

Going to clean up and relax the rest of the night. I'll finish up the house cleaning tomorrow before my dad drops by.

Got back around 5:30pm today and no luck. Best hand was the first and it was just down hill from there.

Oh well. Maybe my regular game tomorrow. Have to see.

We always, always, always pay for warm weather when we're not supposed to get it here.

Was not planning on waking up early today, but I've been up about an hour now because of the thunderstorms. I woke up several times last night to it, but it was in the distance and we weren't getting rain, but it's very much here at the moment.

Weather site is saying half an inch of rain just in this hour, and the skies are booming.

Looks like thunderstorms are coming and going all day today, with another 5 of them scheduled to pop up here through 9PM tonight.

At least, for now, it doesn't look like the rain is going to be heavy for the rest of the day despite those storms. The full rain forecast for 24 hours is 1.25 inches, so the current deluge should end in about an hour and not be the normal for the rest of the day.

If the power goes out I'm hoping it's during one of the later ones. If the power goes out right now I'm half tempted to skip the generator entirely and go down in the crawl with my cordless power light and drill and just use the drill pump from the well and feed it out the bathroom. Not only to stay dry, but to keep any of the water and mess out of the finished room and off my freshly painted staircase.

Well... The back yard is a marsh now, and so is the neighbors, but no water in the basement yet. There's a flood advisory here until noon, which isn't too far from now. The rest of the hourly reports show thunderstorms from 1PM to 9PM now with no breaks in between, but it looks like they dialed back the rainfall predictions in my area for the rest of the day quite substantially with less than .75 inches of rain in the 24 hour period, so only about .25 more for the rest of the day into the night. No water in the basement yet.

Fingers crossed, especially that the power stays on.

My old man is still coming by even though he's a little under the weather and the chance there may be a thunderstorm that could ruin our movie watching experience while he's here. I told him he didn't have to come today, but he wants to.

Hopefully that goes well...

I've got a little time to kill before he gets here since most of my cleanup is done and I've only got one quick errand to run before then, so I figured I'd upload some pics.

Finished staircase with vents...

This was before I'd even started sanding down the steps. I was just figuring my measurements for opening up those holes a bit more and trying to clean them up. You can see how bad those vents were, covered in several layers of paint and rusty.

Here's a pic of both the vents on my horses out back before I started cleaning them up with wire brushes.

Hours of work using my brushes on the cordless drill to get all this crap off.

As clean as they were ever going to get. I don't even know what that black stuff that remained was. They were nice and smooth otherwise. I almost suspect those were burn marks of some kind from the paint and the brushes.

Nice even coat of rust proof spray primer.

Several nice even coats of my oil rubbed bronze rustoleum spray paint. It's the same paint I've used for all of my hardware that I didn't replace, such as the hinges on the kitchen door and all of the internal shelf and lazy suzan hardware inside the kitchen cabinets.

And a closeup of the finish product where you can see the dark grey wall paint behind the grills. You can see here how even with the lights on with full daylight coming in that you can't make out anything behind the grills now but the face of the riser in front of the stringers that I repaired and reshaped with wood putty before painting.

Pretty sweet.

Been babying that for days now. Only walking on it with clean socks when I absolutely needed to or when I had my aunt come down to show her. Going to be showing the old man the work soon today too.

Can't wait for a few weeks to pass before it's fully cured and I can get the stair treads down.

Gotta get that freakin' generator plug installed outside now. The constant rain is a great reminder of that.

I hear ya, Brenda.

My computer gets slower every year. Might be time for me to think about getting a new one soon.

I think October of next year is when they discontinue updates for Windows 10, and I know this thing isn't going to be able to install Windows 11, so unless I want to learn Linux I'm going to be forced to upgrade then anyhow.

I've been hearing about how trash Windows 11 is with forced ads everywhere though, so I might make that switch to Linux regardless.

Hey Sigs...

My GAD65 is still off the charts, but it was a 48% decrease. I don't have the numbers right in front of me but it's something like a reduction from 523 units/mL to 273. (With 0 to 5 being the normal range).

Do you know anything about this or know somebody who does?

My Endo seems pretty disinterested in my C-Peptide change, which was very disappointing. I'm hoping once he sees this in conjunction with the 366% increase in C-Peptide he takes a little more interest in it.

I've read online that treatment to reduce GAD65 can range from plasma exchanges, to drugs to chemotherapy. I'm just eating better and taking vitamins and I cut it in half.

It also appears that one doesn't usually undergo any treatment to reduce GAD65 if it was a result of LADA Diabetes. GAD65 can also be a byproduct of some other serious shit like encephalitis, and it looks like that is the case where they do some serious stuff to reduce the GAD65, where they just let it ride with Diabetes. Otherwise, I just read some studies where they were attempting to chemically reduce GAD65 levels in Type 1 diabetics between teenagers to 45 year olds and noting a possible correlation between the reduction of GAD65 antibodies and an increase in C-Peptide secretion. Unfortunately, as smart as I think I am, those things read like Klingon to me for the most part, so I'm really just skimming over them and trying to get the gist of it is all.

I saw a headline just yesterday about vitamin D helping kids with Type 1. Didn't have time to read it, sorry. But it seemed like it needed a massive dose and i don't think you're taking massive doses of vita D.

Those changes seem meaningful to me, but I'm not a Dr Endo. Do you know if they intend to test again in, say, three to six months? Bc if it keeps changing in a good direction that establishes a positive trend.

*****

Been busting ass taking care of lots of stupid shit and right now tired. Also got a tentative dx, that Dr ENT is sending to my Dr Rheum (boy, I sure have a lot of specialists keeping track of me! I managed to drop Dr Cardio, but picked up Dr ENT instead. Also still have Dr Onco, Dr Onco surgeon, Dr Rheum, and Dr Nephro. A lot of it curcling around autoimmunity. ) So if Dr ENT is correct that's another monoclonal antibody infusion im looking forward to. Oh, yipee. But it might also explain my poor kidney function, high ferritin, and high-ish cancer marker.

No. Unfortunately, according to the Endochrinologist they don't trend either of these tests AT ALL.

I was simply the beneficiary of some sort of screw up with multiple doctors ordering the same tests at the same time and they didn't clear out the multiple entries when I had them done originally, so when I went to get blood work done that was needed we just did everything that was still in the system.

I might never have another one done, because they simply don't care about it and won't bother testing for trends.

This is kind of why I'd like a second opinion. Unfortunately, besides the doctors that I'm seeing I don't know any other people in the medical field to ask about this. And if they don't find this interesting or don't care, I might never know more about it and this feels like a wasted opportunity.

My hope is that this would actually mean something to the right person and that I could get on a trial for some sort of drugs that might further help counteract any of this. My doctor told me he looked into a trial but I was already "too advanced" for it. Maybe I still am with these numbers, but any reading I've done on either of those tests sounds to me like one number isn't supposed to go up without intervention and the other number isn't supposed to go down without intervention, yet they both trended ways they shouldn't be trending on their own.

P.S. I did add more to that last post while you were replying and I don't know if you saw it or not.

Oh.. and I am taking Vitamin D regularly now. Of all the vitamins out there, I did have a very slight vitamin D deficiency last year, so my doctor ordered me to take them. But I'm not taking super mega doses or anything like that. I don't even take them every day since they're in my multi-vitamin already. I'd say probably every 3 days. Along with my daily multi-vitamin for men 50 and older, I take Vitamin D, Vitamin B, Fish Oil and Potassium. I'd say every 3 days or twice per week I'm taking each one of those in the rotation.

Oh... and as of today my 30 day average glucose is 100.

I've even managed to bring my 45 day average to 109 and my 90 day average down to only 111.

My last three days my average is 90 with 100% in (my modified) range of only 60-160 with a standard deviation of only 23% (It's desired to be 36%). I believe my high in the last 72 hours was only 147.

It pays to take advantage of screwups like multiple tests having been ordered.

There are all kinds of clinical trials going on, I did a search recently for clinical trials involving my kind of cancer ... yanno, just in case... and found some interesting ones. I'm kind of beat right now, I think I got a little deflated by the tentative dx, but I can look around and see if there's anything open that might be meaningful to you.
The body has a million ways to screw up, but it also can fix itself. So I'm hopeful that whatever threw you off course, whatever you're doing seems to be working.
So keep on doing what you're doing and in the meantime I can poke around the internet and see if I can find anything useful.

Yeah. I feel like I got away with something I shouldn't have, but it's not going to amount to anything. I love my new Dr. Endo compared to the fossil I used to have, but he is fresh out of doctor school and if they told them we don't track these things for any reason he probably has no reason to think these results mean anything.

First place went to a lady that finished the morning with over 24,000points. She got the all elusive extra 100 points for having an all concealed hand then went out which is an extra 30 points then on top of all that she had winds and dragons which was at least another 3 doubles and maybe more.

So, yeah scores like mine and this other lady are possible. But it has to fall just right.

BC needs the rain because it means snow in the mountains. But so much good snow sitting on top of an unstable snow pack also means danger in the back country. Massive avalanche warnings for the whole province.

I was scheduled for oncology blood work, but my nephrologist wanted to check my kidneys, and it's been a zillion years since I've seen my GP, so I sucessfully rounded up a urinalysis and an A1C and lipid panel, so I've gotten all the tests done all at once. My GP wants a telemed in a couple of weeks so I can tell her about all the medical weirdness and she can review test results with me.
Right now sitting in the oncology waiting area for regular follow up.

I have a bathroom proposal with me to review.

Also paid contractor this AM for the replacement windows and made appointments for his hubby and walked the dog. DAMN but this dog has lots of energy!!! She wanted to run. Best I can manage is a slow jog!

Well, the guy got to my place a bit after I got back from my walk. Hoses under the bathroom sink needs replacing and he will get it unclogged as well. Told him that I had been trying to get that done since just after I moved in here.

Kitchen tap needs replacing and the trap is rusty so that will be replaced as well.

He said he will contact me in two or three weeks to see when he can get this work done. I think it will be longer than that.

Strange.

It's probably not even a job for a plumber. Unless somebody has leaky pipes upstairs that are flowing down the walls and are only noticeable in the basement where the pipes are exposed, it's much more likely a temperature control issue in the basement.

But if somebody had a leaky pipe, there would probably be a lot more evidence of water pooling somewhere on the ground too, and not just condensation on the pipes.

Don't know what plumbers charge per hour in Canada, but around these parts the only time I'm calling a plumber is after I've exhausted all other possibilities and I've just recently fallen down a flight of stairs and cracked my neck and incapable of doing any work on my own.

But it is one of the perks of renting. At least you don't have to pay the plumber to get work done.

None of that work is likely to have anything to do with the condensation problem in the basement, but fortune smiles upon you if a month from now you've got a kitchen sink that works from top to bottom.

I just bought a new kitchen faucet online that should arrive in a few weeks myself. Not at all looking forward to installing it, but really looking forward to having free flowing hot water again and not having to spend 30 minutes filling up the sink with hot water anymore.

I think that's probably the case in most apartment complexes unless you're living in some gated community 4-star complex.

Hopefully they at least get you a properly working faucet installed. We could probably fix the draining issue on our own.

You got to look on the bright side though. Whatever you're dealing with currently is still a huge step up from that last renting situation you were in, right?

I think I might clean up those risers and the trim on the stairs going up to the 2nd floor today and start working on painting them properly. I'll shoot some before pics of what it's looked like for the last 11 or 12 years after I did the initial work on them and never got around to finishing them.

It's funny how lousy it looks right now with everything else around it finished and looking good because you didn't even notice how bad it looked until now. My old man hadn't mentioned that staircase once in the last decade, but when he came by last week and saw the finished overlook/stairs/basement work he brought it up. He told me exactly what I already knew and that he never even noticed it until now because everything else around it looked so crappy before.

The risers actually looked good when I first did them, but the problem came when I stained the stairs afterward. Painters tape just sucks at its only job. The stain bled behind the tape all over the place on the white paint, both on the risers and the trim on the side. My memory couldn't tell me why paint had come off the risers in some parts and I attributed that to banging furniture legs on it, but that's not what happened. You can tell by the pattern of where it happened and how it looks that I actually peeled white paint off the risers when I took the tape off.

This will be another pretty intricate job in awkward positions. That's alright. I don't need to finish it today or anything. The weather outlook around here took a turn for the worse for the rest of the month and it's not like I'll be itching to do work outside anytime soon. Right now is the perfect time to finally get this done.

I think it's great that they're actually doing maintenance on the building. I believe I've read that they were working on the elevators and the wiring. Now, the plumbing. It may take them a while to get to it, just make sure you remind them frequently of all of the things they said they would do, if you have any way of keeping in touch. Or give the building manager a list, and keep one for yourself, and whenever the plumbers show up give them a copy and make sure they address the most important ones.

AFA slow drains ... if they are iron waste pipes (I have no idea how old the building is, but I suspect its on the older side) the pipes could be rusted shut, or at least significantly narrowed. We had our waste pipes replaced with ABS about three years ago bc the main kitchen drain rusted shut, and many of the other lines were at 25% capacity. The only fix for that was to replace them.

Rusted traps can break through if you try to snake them out aggressively. What can be done depends how thin the metal is.

Most landlords just let rentals run down. Although I know it's a huge inconvenience, I'm pleased every time I read that they're doing maintenance, and my only hope is that they do a good job that won't have to be revisited in 5 years.

Hey SIX, I don't know if you plan on using painter's tape this time or if you're going to cut in by hand, but there is a tape that doesn't let paint bleed thru very much. I forget the brand, but it's blue tape with chartreuse lettering on it. Possibly 3M. I used it a lot when we were painting dear daughter's room with those four horizontal stripes that went all the way around. Boy, THAT was a job! Anyway, it worked pretty well.

Today is THE LAST significant doctor's appt for the month, altho a telemed and one assistance agency meeting for dear daughter.

There were/ are 13 appointments of various kinds this month between myself, dear daugther, and hubby. Mostly mine. Really REALLY looking forward things slowing down.

My cancer marker is down, my kidneys are still so-so but that's my new normal, the rest of my bloodwork is fine, my sinus issue has been tentatively dx'd with a serious systemic disease (granulomatosis polyangiitis) but I'm waiting for the rheumatologist to weigh in bc she might back the dx down to something less dire.

I have the go-ahead from Dr ENT and Dr Rheumatologist to do yardwork, but I need to wear an N95 to keep those soil- dwelling gram negative bacteria and molds out of my nose. Small price to pay. On with the show!!!

If they can get the bathroom sink working it would be a good thing for sure.

This place is most definitely a huge step up from the other situation I was in. So, I shall just wait for the guy to get back to me and let me know when they can fix it.

Elevators and smoke detectors were replaced last year in this building.

He told me the trap in the kitchen and bathroom were rusty, which is why they need replacing. The pipes are plastic but the hoses are metal.

I will keep my fingers crossed that all the repairs go smoothly and I don't have to think about this again.

I'm just doing everything by hand this time. It's going to be like doing my touch ups on the stairs in the basement after the bleed through on the tape, only I'll be cutting in to stained wood steps instead of painted steps.

There's quite a lot of prep work involved this time though. Partly because I'm not sure how well my paint is going to cover any residual stain that got up on the risers and trim, and partially because the original work was done over a decade ago and everything needs vacuuming and a thorough wipe down before anything else gets done.

I may also choose to put a coat of wipe on poly on the steps too. I do remember that I ran out of polyurethane when I was doing those steps and they got one less coat than the floor upstairs got.

It's all held up really well regardless, but since I'll be cleaning them off real good anyhow it couldn't hurt to put a quick coat down on them. Fortunately, I knew many years ago that if you use furniture/floor polish on wood that you can't ever recoat the surface with poly unless you sand everything down bare and start over, so as long as I get them super clean I shouldn't have any problems with one coat of poly adhering.

As for tape, I use only 3M or Duck brand painters tape. I don't cheap out on that stuff.

It just doesn't work in most applications. The only circumstance I've ever used it where there weren't any problems was when I have a caulked corner that was smooth and uniform. If there are any imperfections below the surface of the tape you're going to get crap on the surface you taped off. There are quite a bit of them on these stairs. Nothing you'd see with the naked eye when it's touched up, but clearly evident when you're working on it and your eyes are only a foot away from the material.

I'm hoping the paint I put down will stick over the residual stain and it doesn't bleed through. I could spend 2 days sanding this stuff and still not get rid of all of it. I have to do it all freehand with my fingers and sheets of sandpaper and be careful not to scratch up the stained surface of the steps. I'm just getting all the worst spots, and then trying to get as close to the steps as I can right now.

Yeah... Just another one of those things that are going to take a lot longer than I thought they would going into it.

I wasn't planning on doing any sanding at all until a few hours ago, honestly, but I don't have any experience with this at all. Online searches aren't really a help either, because no matter how I type in the query all I get are results where people explain to you how to paint over furniture with poly/stain and get it to adhere with the right prepwork and materials.

None of that is helpful for me. The amount of stain we're talking about is insignificant compared to the amount of stain that would be on a piece of furniture somebody wanted to paint over. Not only that, but it's on top of trim enamel, and not deep in the wood grain.

I just don't want to make the mistake of painting over it and thinking it will cover correctly. I'm not really worried about it flaking off or anything, but if I need to try sanding down as much as possible it's better to do that now than realizing I made a mistake after covering it with one or two coats of my white enamel paint and seeing it still bleed through.

So who knows...? I may be wasting a whole ton of time and energy here today. Oh well... It feels good working again after more than a few days off.
