Julian Assange and Russia

During the press conference, Assange tried to back away from accusations linking him to Russia and said the WikiLeaks operation was “a neutral, digital Switzerland.”

However, some experts question the organization’s motives, pointing to alleged ties between WikiLeaks and Russia.

"Everything they have done over the last few months suggests they are operating as a front for a different leaker [Russia],” Ryan Kalember, SVP of Cybersecurity Strategy at Proofpoint, told the Guardian .

Kalember added the apparent ties to the Kremlin and WikiLeaks’ record of publishing identifying information about individuals has dwindled trust in the organization.

“No one in the information security community really trusts him and his motives,” he said. “I think at this point Assange is effectively acting in the service of the Russian government, whether intentionally or not,” said Kalember.

Assange has been viewed as favoring Trump after WikiLeaks released hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman John Podesta last year. Top U.S. intel officials believe Russia hacked Democrats to help President Donald Trump win the election last November. A Russian state-backed group called Cozy Bear is believed to be behind the DNC hacks last year. The release of hacked documents had a major impact on Clinton’s presidency bid, leading her to lose the election to Trump.

The social media behemoth announced on its blog today that it is in the process of building a tool to allow users to see which posts from the Russian Internet Research Agency—now the Federal News Agency, or FAN—appeared in their feeds during the 20-month period between January 2015 and August 2016.

The move is part of the company’s “ongoing effort to protect our platforms and the people who use them from bad actors who try to undermine our democracy,” wrote a Facebook spokesperson in an un-bylined post.

THUGR, let's take this step by step.

What are the essential features of OUR democracy (aside from a free, fair, and private vote... which I'm pretty sure we don't have anymore)?

Some Founding Fathers were highly educated. They read Plato and other philoosphers. They were aware of the injustices and errors of previous governments:

Star Chamber proceedings (ie secret trials by the monarch), followed by brutal punishment and death. This was a common practice by monarchies who would routinely imprison political rivals in places like the infamous Tower of London ("Here comes a candle to light you to bed, here comes a chopper to chop off your head" or 'London Bridge is falling down... take the key and lock her up, my fair lady"), the equally infamous Bastile, or other nasty dungeons.

Interminable religious wars between Catholics and Protestants, culminating in the 30 years war.
Quote:

The Thirty Years’ War was a 17th-century religious conflict fought primarily in central Europe. It remains one of the longest and most brutal wars in human history, with more than 8 million casualties resulting from military battles as well as from the famine and disease

https://www.history.com/topics/reformation/thirty-years-war#section_5
The sectarian wars were so intense that in one city in Switzerland (IIRC Bern) as two Protestant sects seesawed for control, the people were afraid to even glance at cemeteries as they were passing, lest they be accused of idolatry and punished or killed.
Since many FF were Catholic and many were Protestant, some were deist and a few were (quietly) agnostic, they decided to not let religion be a division.

Oppressive taxation. The legend of Robin Hood didn't come from nothing!

The role of monopolies, then Crown Corporations like the East India Company operating under a "charter" granted by the King of England. It was East India tea that was dumped into Boston Harbor.

They were even aware of the noxious role if private banks, like the Bank if England (which was indeed private, and not a government bank despite its name.
Quote:

The Bank of England was incorporated by act of Parliament in 1694 with the immediate purpose of raising funds to allow the English government to wage war against France in the Low Countries. A royal charter allowed the bank to operate as a joint-stock bank with limited liability. No other joint-stock banks were permitted in England and Wales until 1826. This special status and its position as the government’s banker gave the bank considerable competitive advantages.

Unremitting spying on the people for any sign of revolt. It's a mistake to think that kings and queens only concerned themselves with other titled families. Common nursery rhymes you might have heard when you were little were actually coded protests that allowed the population to grumble without being imprisoned. "Jack Sprat could eat no fat, His wife could eat no lean" was a coded protests against taxation.

... time to go. Later.

The framers of the Constitution were a diverse group. Northeasterners tended to be farmers, shopkeepers and clergymen. Middle East coast were often overseas merchants. Southerners tended to have plantations and slaves. They all wanted their interests represented. (See "Decision in Philadelphia") But the theorists among them were a sophisticated group, and they thought long and hard about how to NOT recreate the oppressive centralized tyranny they escaped.

After drafting the Constitution they set about formalizing the liberties they felt would ensure that the government remsun responsive to the people.

You should know most of them. I'll get to them later. Aside from the vote, it is those rights which form our democracy.

It's hard for me to see how Russia could upend our democracy any more than we've done it ourselves.

SIGNY: Wow. I guess uundestanding western democracy is just too much for you?
Yanno, when I went to school (IN THE UNITED STATES) I was given basic civic lessons: a gloss of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, division of powers. They even covered the whole "3/5 of slaves" compromise. Some of the history of why the Constitution has some of the provisions that it does.

You must have been playing hooky that week.

I've learned additional history since then. Did you know, for example, that Ben Franklin was not only a scientist, writer and publisher, he was so concerned about deforestation he invented a more efficient stove (the Ben Franklin stove). And that he believed that it was so important Americans be educated and be able to communicate he opened the first library and founded the US Postal Service.

He was also our ambassador to France, tasked with obtaining help for our revolution. And despite his advice in Poor Richard's Almanac, he was quite a libertine and enjoyed the company of many French ladies.

It recommended the Kremlin launch a propaganda campaign on social media and Russian state-backed global news outlets to encourage U.S. voters to elect a president who would take a softer line toward Russia than the administration of then-President Barack Obama, the seven officials said.

A second institute document, drafted in October and distributed in the same way, warned that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was likely to win the election. For that reason, it argued, it was better for Russia to end its pro-Trump propaganda and instead intensify its messaging about voter fraud to undermine the U.S. electoral system’s legitimacy and damage Clinton’s reputation in an effort to undermine her presidency, the seven officials said.

Nothing.

Patton wanted to drive through Berlin and not stop until he reached Moscow. He never trusted the Russian govt. So how is it a shock to anyone that a former KGB man like Putin would change his spots ? Point is, this is nothing new ! Been going on for 70+ years.

Substack writer Matt Taibbi previously reported how top Democrats like California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, as well as Connecticut Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal, kept promoting claims that the Kremlin had significant influence in public discourse despite being told otherwise by Twitter executives.

On Friday, Taibbi did a deep dive into their source, Hamilton 68, a so-called "dashboard" that purportedly monitored Russian bot activity.

Hamilton 68, which was spearheaded by former FBI special agent and MSNBC contributor Clint Watts, was operated by the Alliance for Securing Democracy (ASD), a "neoliberal think tank" founded in 2017 with an advisory council that includes Clinton ally John Podesta, former Obama-era acting CIA director Michael Morrell, former Obama official Michael McFaul and The Bulwark editor-at-large Bill Kristol.

Taibbi wrote Hamilton 68 "was the source of hundreds if not thousands of mainstream print and TV news stories in the Trump years."

But behind the scenes, Twitter executives trashed Hamilton 68 and deliberated whether they should publicly rebuke ASD.
"I think we need to just call this out on the bulls--- it is,"
Twitter's then-head of trust and safety Yoel Roth wrote in an October 2017 email, later writing in January 2018 that the dashboard
"falsely accuses a bunch of legitimate right-leaning accounts of being Russian bots."

"Virtually any conclusion drawn from it will take conversations in conservative circles on Twitter and accuse them of being Russian," Roth wrote in February 2018.

Mutiny and mayhem in Russia a probable boon for Ukraine

When Yevgeny Prigozhin turned his back on Russia’s war to assail his own military leaders in an armed revolt and march on Moscow, many Ukrainians described feeling incredulity and giddiness.

Ukraine’s military did appear to seize on the momentary turmoil created by Prigozhin’s efforts. Hanna Maliar, Ukraine’s deputy defense minister, announced a multipronged attack near Bakhmut, the city that the Wagner mercenary group had helped capture at the cost of thousands of lives.

Prigozhin shook the Russian establishment when he called Russia’s stated reasons for the invasion “lies” by military and government leaders.

It doesn't seem like that, at all. It seems like you are a highly motivated promoter of conspiracy theories.

Research reveals what kind of people fall for conspiracy theories

People can be prone to believe in conspiracy theories due to a combination of personality traits and motivations.

People who believe in conspiracy theories tend to be insecure and paranoid, suggests a new study.

Conspiracy theorists are also likely to be emotionally volatile and impulsive, according to the findings.

But they're not all mentally unstable, say psychologists.

They found that people can be prone to believe in conspiracy theories due to a combination of personality traits and motivations.

These include relying strongly on their intuition, feeling a sense of antagonism and superiority toward others, and perceiving threats in their environment.

The results of the study, published online in the journal Psychological Bulletin, paint a "nuanced" picture of what drives conspiracy theorists, according to lead author Shauna Bowes.

“Conspiracy theorists are not all likely to be simple-minded, mentally unwell folks – a portrait which is routinely painted in popular culture,” said Bowes, a doctoral student in clinical psychology at Emory University.

“Instead, many turn to conspiracy theories to fulfill deprived motivational needs and make sense of distress and impairment.”

She said previous research on what drives conspiracy theorists had mainly looked separately at personality and motivation.

The new study aimed to examine those factors together to arrive at a more unified account of why people believe in conspiracy theories.

The research team analyzed data from 170 studies involving more than 158,000 participants, mainly in the UK, USA and Poland.

They focused on studies that measured participants’ motivations or personality traits associated with conspiratorial thinking.

The team found that, overall, people were motivated to believe in conspiracy theories by a need to understand and feel safe in their environment and a need to feel like the community they identify with is superior to others.

I told you this before, but it still pertains: I haven't been sick even once in the 21st Century and neither have my daughters, all of which have been vaccinated. In contrast, the Trumptards I know are a sickly bunch dying young, which seems exactly what they deserve because of the way they live. Smoke another cigarette, 6ix. It won't kill you, at least not immediately.

Wrong. The difference is reality is based on fact. Conspiracy is fiction. Facts don't change and fiction almost always morphs into something else. The term is often used to describe beliefs that are not supported by evidence and even contradicted by it

My boosters worked great, thank you.

Its obvious this thread goes beyond your critical thinking skills. All you can do is offer up bone headed lies and insults against America.

So, I'll ask comrade. How's that war in Ukraine going? How is Russia doing? Your boy Putin is up to his neck in shit.

Can you see me laughing comrade?

Putin wants to show his citizenry that democracy is no better than what they have. It's what keeps most Russians from taking to the streets to protest for something better.

Well, as this shit plays out with Trump the checks and balances of our democracy, are showing the Russian people our system and our rule of law is much better than what Putin offers. What he offers is no better than what is offered in the Middle East; bad and corrupt government.

With Trump now indicted more than 4 times, charged with committing 91 felonies and about to lose all his assets, I'd say I've made my point.

I ignored your silly post for a year, and now looking back, what have we found ?

What ' interference ' did the Russians actually do to our election ? To date, nothing. Oh, they " may have " tried , but functionally , there's nothing to show that their actions had 1 iotas worth of impact on who voted for either candidate.

Nothing.

Patton wanted to drive through Berlin and not stop until he reached Moscow. He never trusted the Russian govt. So how is it a shock to anyone that a former KGB man like Putin would change his spots ? Point is, this is nothing new ! Been going on for 70+ years.

She LOST. Get over it.

Special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election between President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has led to the indictments of 31 people and three companies — that we know of so far.

That group is composed of four former Trump advisers, 26 Russian nationals rappy with much more to come. Still think it's much ado about nothing? As I've said, Patton would roll over in his grave reading what your opinion of all this is.

And Trump is his best ally in this.

Yup, and here we go again. That said, Putin is paying for his interference big time.
