Watching Boehner's "boner" was truly amazing...and very dramatic. His "Plan B" having failed to get the necessary votes to pass, the Republicans simply WALKED OUT and went home for Xmas. These people are insane, and we will pay for it.
Quote:

Six weeks after Republicans failed to get out the vote and learned they can't win as a party for the rich, exclusively, Republican leadership couldn't find the votes to raise taxes on millionaires. Who said elections have consequences?

There was never a remote chance that John Boehner's Plan B would become law. It was always a symbolic vote to let Republicans say they're willing to spare 99.7 percent of the country from a tax increase in 2013. Today, the GOP was hoping to stand before a pool of reporters and tell Democrats: It's on you, now.

Instead, opening night for this little bit of theater was a smashing disaster and the symbolism worked entirely in the opposite direction. It was Republicans who sent the message that they'd rather let taxes go up on everybody than raise taxes for the top 0.3 percent of households. It was Republicans who made the symbolic display that they care more about immediate spending cuts in a weak economy than building an off-ramp before the fiscal cliff. And it was Republicans who appeared to have utterly no idea how to cope with the new inescapable political reality that taxes are going up, no matter what.

Plan B was designed to fail, right from the start. In addition to raising taxes on millionaires (Kryptonite to Republicans) it also cut tax benefits for lower-income families (Kryptonite to Democrats). In fact, taxes would go up by hundreds of dollars for the typical family making less than $50,000, according to the Tax Policy Center. As you can see in the chart below, it's really only families making between $200,000 and $1,000,000 dollars (the 97th to 99.7th percentile of taxpayers) who would get a break under Plan B.

Now there are two key dates going forward: January 1 and January 3. On January 1, we're off the cliff. On January 3, the House of Representatives holds the next election for Speaker. In an atmosphere of GOP dissent, Boehner might need Democrats for both votes. He doesn't have enough GOP support to pass a bill that raises taxes, and he might not have enough GOP support to control his own caucus on January 4. The first political reality is that taxes are going up, no matter what. The second political reality is that Boehner will need Democratic votes to pass legislation.

"We've got to make sure that we are not the party of big business, big banks, big Wall Street bailouts, big corporate loopholes, big anything," Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said in November. "We cannot be, we must not be, the party that simply protects the rich so they get to keep their toys."

Jindal's comments were both utterly right and devastatingly prescient. The country would benefit from a party with a conservative, market-driven approach to economic inequality and social mobility. One day, it just might get one. But yesterday, in an attempt to show off how reasonable Republicans could be, Boehner accidentally revealed the stark unreasonableness of a party that's defining itself by a smaller number every month. Yesterday, the party of the 1 percent became the party of the 0.3 percent. http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2012/12/plan-bs-failure-no

- the-fiscal-cliff-but-a-disaster-for-the-gop/266559/

The insanity of it all, and how they looked yesterday, amazes me. If you look closely at "Plan B", as the chart shows, what's in it actually RAISES taxes on some, and CUTS taxes for the rich! It's not just about "raising taxes" as it's portrayed, there's more inside it which does exactly the opposite of what is claimed.
Quote:

Here's the sad story of the fiscal cliff in a couple of tweets. On December 14, Eric Cantor tweeted, "We will not adjourn Congress until a credible solution to the fiscal cliff has been announced."

But on Thursday, Boehner tallied up the votes for his Plan B on taxes, calculated that he didn't have the number necessary for an increase on those earning more than $1 million and then withdrew the measure.

A few minutes later, Cantor tweeted, "The House of Representatives has concluded legislative business for the week. The House will return after the Christmas holiday when needed."

The Republicans will pay for this. The popular perception will be that they preferred to allow a fiscal crisis to happen rather than raise taxes on what is calculated to be just 2% of the population (a position that polls suggest the voters favor). It smacks not only of ideology but also of greed. As the Democrats make a case for tax relief for the middle class, the GOP will be left making a case for giving a break to the rich. That puts the president's party in a good position to retake the House in 2014.

Should we blame the tea party right? Given that these lawmakers were probably the ones who denied Boehner his margin of passage, yes. Never forget that the tea party revolt was aimed as much at the GOP establishment as it was Obama. It was Boehner's job to win these radicals over -- and his failure is what the media will now focus on.

In 2013, the GOP has to have a major rethink about its political strategy. There is one wing that feels that the Republican Party was put on the Earth to reduce the state. But while the theory might have intellectual appeal (it's always nice to encounter a politician who stands for something), it's hard to hold that position and govern responsibly. Excerpts from http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/21/opinion/stanley-boehner-failure/index.ht

Totally insane. And I hope they DO pay for it. Their childishness in walking out has been illustrated over and over, but now it's getting too close to truly damaging the country to be tolerated. And yesterday wasn't the last...today:
Quote:

Check this out: earlier this morning, moments after the House was gaveled into session, Democratic Minority Whip Steny Hoyer tries to make a motion to bring the Senate payroll tax cut extension up for a vote ... but the Republican presiding officer not only refuses, but walks off the House floor and out of the room without even acknowledging Hoyer's request.

So not only are House Republicans unwilling to extend the payroll tax cut, they won't even let Democrats talk about it. I can't think of a more perfect demonstration of the utter callousness of the House GOP: they simply do not care about the harm their actions are inflicting on the country. Don't we PAY these guys to do their job? Shouldn't they sit there and keep at it until they come up with something which won't put us into a recession? The gall of them just to walk out--some even SMILING--when the work isn't done, to take an Smas holiday even longer than working people are, when they've left us in this position, just leaves me simmering.

Boy, you're not alone! Barring that, I'd like to go back to before 2010, when we had Republicans in government who at least knew how to compromise!

With any luck at all, this is gonna hurt them BAD in 2014--I don't care if the Dems take over the House...in fact I'm not in favor of it, I just want people in government who know how to WORK together for the good of the country!

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Hello,

Even if they want to be obstinate, they shouldn't go home with this unresolved. Their obstinate asses should be in their obstinate chairs. They don't get to be obstinate AND take a vacation. If they want to make a principled stand, let them stand, not go home.

There IS no compromise on this matter. We need to cut spending, and drastically, or else anything we do is a complete waste of time.

Obama and the Dems are beyond ignorant on how this fiscal thing works. They blindly want to keep piling on the debt, because it benefits them politically.

They WANT Greece style debt for this country, for many reasons. Disaster and chaos benefits the Dems, because it allows them to use the govt to take over more and more of our lives.

Fundamental change you can believe in.

Harry Reid has had the already-passed original House proposal on his desk since August. Reid wouldn't allow a Senate vote on it, just like if plan 'b had passed, he'd have buried that too.

Your juvenile, defiant ignorance to reality is nothing short of pathetic.

They're not tax CUTS for the rich. It's merely keeping the tax rates the same as they've been, for the past 10 years.

The drop in the economy had ZERO to do w/ the tax rates. Do you even comprehend any of this ? The " solution" Obama and the Dems want will have NO substantive effect on making things better. It won't even pay for the damn INTEREST that's piling on the debt, let alone bring down the debt itself.

But passing feel good laws, because you just have to do something, will actually make things worse. Dems love making empty, moronic gestures, to appease the dumb masses, who continue to vote for them, no matter what.

Ban guns and make 'gun free' zones ? Does zero to save lives.

Tax the rich to help pay down the debt ? Doesn't even put a dent in the debt, and won't even pay for the interest on that debt.

Tax carbon, under the guise that there's some sort of climate change crisis, even though the $ raised will have absolutely zero effect on reversing the imaginary effects of man caused global warming.

One idiotic policy after another, all designed to have the exact opposite effect on the "crisis" they're trying to solve.

Gotta love Sheila Jackson Lee's plan, to turn every school into a veritable prison, with bullet proof glass, steel doors, and barriers that KNOW when there's trouble, and automatically shut on their own. So, how the hell are the cops , firemen or EMT's suppose to get into a school quickly, if there's a crisis ???

Idiots. Morons. Incompetent dumbfucks who have no damn clue , at all.

Ignoring Rap's lengthy screed (because I already know what it says), I'd like to point out that Democrats have ALREADY agreed to a lot of cuts, while Republicans haven't budged ONE INCH on taxes.

March 2011: "This new package combined with the $10 billion in cuts Republicans squeezed out of the continuing resolutions comes to a grand total of $43 billion in cuts."

Remember the debt ceiling fiasco of lsat Fall? "the plan agreed upon by the White House and congressional leaders would, as a first step, include about $1 trillion in spending cuts spread out over 10 years

So where's the compromise?

I'm not asking, Rap, mind you; we all know what his response would be. But to the rational right-wingers amongst us: The Democrats have already agreed to spending cuts; when have the Republicans agreed to ANY raise in taxes??

Frem, how on earth could Joe Biden "trick" the Republican members of Congress to all walk out and leave when they said they'd stay to work things out? I think you give him far too much credit, and the GOP far too LITTLE credit for being able to shoot themselves in the foot.

Mr. Auraptor, you are right, that is dumb........but there are idiots everywhere, how about the NRA Dumb Bastard-In-Chief, Mr. LaPeePee, suggesting that we arm schoolteachers and/or retired cops to protect every single school in America.

1- It flies in the face of the number one thing you guys complain about, irresponsible government spending. It would cost upwards of 7 Billion dollars a year (according to a NBC news analyst). Say, wasn't there armed guards at Columbine? That worked out well, didn't it?

2- What if we do pass a law that enables teachers to carry side arms or other weapons to protect the students. Then what? What's to prevent a teacher from "snapping" and shooting everyone in sight? We could place a machine gun turret on the roof of every school and once a person with body armor is spotted the person up in the "crow's nest" could open fire.

I have a suggestion. Ooooo, this is great!!!! Why don't we plant mines around the school grounds. Once the kids are in, you lockdown and activate the mines. Anyone setting foot on the premises will be blown to kingdom come. Man, I'm good!!!

I'm sure the NRA will love that one.

I agree. The President blew this one. First rule of negotiating - Don't Blink!!! The first one to mention a number loses, even I know that.

Chuck Shumer put it best on Meet the Press Sunday, he said, and I'm paraphrasing - the president ran his campaign on this issue, raise taxes on anyone with income over $250K, etc., etc.; everybody else chillax. He kicked ass. The people have spoken. Get over it, you guys lost.

My guess is they're still bitter and want to muddy the waters some. They rather see everyone suffer (like the rich are actually gonna suffer....yeah right!). They would rather see the country go down in flames, than allow for any prosperity to go to people of color - Hispanics, blacks and others.

Up until about 2004 the number of millionaires in this country was on the upswing. Only thing though, these were new millionaires. "Old" money was losing it's control of the world economy, hence the economic crisis. Redistribution had to look like it was "accidental" and not controlled by the old guard. Money laundering was at a all-time high, and this by internationally well-known banks. Plus the whole secretive derivatives market (also controlled by international banking concerns) and voila, trillions were exchanged and guess who has that money?

Think of it for a moment. Madoff was placing a foothold, albeit a small one, in the greed parade, but he was insuring his family's place in all of this. But his pilferage was a mere bag of peanuts compared to the global heist that took place. Back to the fight here. This has nothing to do with old values, it has to do with old money versus new money and those who were daring to make a move in the new economic dynamic and social construct. The old white guys of the republican party want to remain in power, they began to exploit the moral majority (see Tea Party), the conservatives and now they are being led by the nose (or so it appears).

Of course, I could be way off base here.

The president must remind them who won and why and then shut up. Let them stew a while. By the way, those who say that the president is showing no leadership must be looking by way of the rear view mirror.
