Hello,

I was disturbed by this video on CNN, where a child sings a song about homosexuals not making it to heaven in a Church full of congregants. The child is cheered by the congregants. Someone posted the video to youtube, where a proud parent declares, "That's my boy!"

Later, a news team is denied access to the church, making it seem more like a private enclave of ill sentiment rather than a place of worship.

I think that Christians everywhere need to discourage this kind of behavior, as it not only presents us in a poor light, but it goes against the tone of the religious texts we claim to follow. Even if you actually believe that homosexuals are not going to heaven, that is certainly not cause for merriment and celebration.

If you believe instead, as I do, that it is for God to judge men, then we must wonder why anyone would feel the need to make such declarations and songs. Is it truly about the religious philosophy? About Jesus and his teachings? Or is this simply the meanness of human beings being celebrated in a house ostensibly dedicated to the almighty?

I applaud all those who protest against such small-minded hate and misuse of the doctrine. Opposing hatred is a real reason to celebrate.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I can't watch the video...your description was enough, thank you. As for Christians denouncing it, I don't hear a lot of that. Why is this happening? Because a portion of "Christians" aren't real Christians--that's always been true, but it seems now that this group is more vocal and public than in previous times.

As to why they do it, it goes right back to that same "other" principle which shows its ugly face in far too many religious extremists (and not even extremists) of any organized religion. Bear in mind that these same people see Mormonism as a "cult" and Islam as "terrorism". It's easier to accept the doctrine of those in power than to think for themselves, to THINK about their faith and what it is really about, and let it guide their lives. Hate is fear; fear comes easily to humans, so the "other" is easily feared, ergo easily hated.

Worth a note, Anthony - that my very first month of attending a public education institution was marred by the amount of crap I wound up catching for refusing to mistreat, shun and abuse people with darker skin than me, I thought it idiotic then, and my opinion on that ain't ever really changed.
Consider this - those other kids who threw ephithets at me when they weren't doin worse, they weren't BORN like that.
The words "******-lover" and later (after refusing the pledge) "commie" did not enter their vocabulary without deliberate intent, that hate was not inborn but TAUGHT.

And I think the teaching thereof is a monstrous act of abuse.
Just imagine for a moment, that the kid doing the singing later breaks ties with these insane fuckwads and grows up a tolerant, decent human being - haunted FOREVER by this imagery.

To be brutal about it, my opinion on this is much the same as if they had physically or sexual abused the kid and filmed it, glorified it - cast in that light how can any decent human being support such things ?
While I do not believe in dehumanizing people, I do believe that people can through their own actions voluntarily surrender that humanity, at which point I feel no obligation to regard them as such.

It also once again highlights our ludicrous notion of children as subhuman - cause while this is legally accepted, what if say... you taught your aging, senile father to spout abuse at people for their beliefs, preferences or skin color, how would the law react to THAT then, hmm ?
Think on that for a moment, if you will.

I can't be sure what the law would do in that case, Frem. It's a bit hazy. But any moral human should know it is wrong.

In the banking industry, however, taking advantage of older people financially is a crime we constantly look out for. It's called 'elder abuse' and we regularly stop transactions and report infractions as people try to misuse their elders to gain access to funds, make questionable loans, and otherwise initiate malfeasance.

I know of no such counterpart to protect children. I assume this is because few children have assets of their own to plunder- though certain child stars might disagree.
