What is “sustainability” in the first place? That is a question the study ducks, noting that it is only advising EPA on how to bring it within the agency’s canon.

The experts take their definition from an Obama Administration executive order of October, 2009, entitled Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy and Economic Performance. It defines sustainability in sweeping fashion as the ability “to create and maintain conditions, under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic, and other requirements of present and future generations.”

The experts say they found the legal authority for EPA to foster sustainable development without further congressional approval in the wording of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, or NEPA. The study says the law, the cornerstone of U.S. environmental policy, declared that the “continuing policy of the Federal Government” is to “create and maintain conditions, under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic, and other requirements of present and future generations.”

So, if I have this straight, FOX's real point is "Nixon, that radical leftist."

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

This all sounds very nice, but whenever the government grabs for more power I get very nervous that I am being duped.

This is really about a new book. Here it is for free.

http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=13152

I don't think this is EPA expanding their regulatory powers. I believe Congress expands or restricts regulatory powers, and the EPA simply enacts them.

The book is about how the EPA can help promote sustainability, take it into consideration, while it is enacting current regulatory powers.

If sustainability is indeed desirable, I don't see why this would be a bad thing.

Hello,

Sustainability is incredibly desirable. So is Peace.

I have known terrible things to be done in the name of maintaining the Peace.

So I get nervous.

I do not trust the government. When they grope for new powers (or suddenly discover powers they always had) I get very nervous.

I hope this is not used to do something sneaky and terrible.

And I am sure enough that it is, to work against it till the evidence otherwise is overwhelming.

Oh, wow. I guess, just like all other agencies, the less "thinking" the EPA does, the better.
