Freedom is Important because People are Important

From: http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2011/12/05/smoking-can-make-your-nipples
-fall-off/?hpt=hp_bn10

"Susan flushed. She raised her voice. “Dr. Youn, I took a week off work for this surgery. I had to put my whole life on hold for an entire week. If you told me I’d lose my nipples from smoking, I would’ve quit for good. This is your fault.”

Yes. Seriously. Susan blamed me for the inconvenience."

Hello,

I would blame this doctor for the inconvenience, too. It's important to give medical warnings to people that are both precise and in terms they can understand. 'You may experience some healing problems' does not equal, 'parts of your body could die and fall off' to the average patient.

I am astounded that it took an upset patient to make this Doctor speak to his patients in plain English.

I wonder how many malpractice suits could be avoided with improved communication.

As usual, I can see this argument both ways. And as a result, I don't think very highly of either the doctor's casual dismissal of having to take a week off from work and lack of communication, nor of the woman and her inability to take responsibility for her own choices.

I see two people annoyed because they both wasted their time, of their own fault and doing, and this over a vanity surgery. At least it stopped before it ended in tragedy.

Yes, people need to learn to be blunt.

I've found that one fist full of labcoat, and the other filled with a dental elevator, works WONDERS for physician-patient communication...

But that's just my experience.

I note, in retrospect, none of them damn docs who were refusing to listen to me in the hospital got within arms reach at any time, bah.

If the doctor were honest with the patient he would say "Breast augmentation won't help, men aren't really big on fake boobs. Mother nature dealt you this hand, and your insecurities actually don't come from there, and you can deal with this in therapy. If you want to know what we do here, we stick sacks of jelly in your tits that might leak and infect the large wounds we cut in you."

In case there are any women not aware, here's another thing men actually don't find attractive: makeup. Coating your face in bizmuth, which is a heavy metal extremely similar to lead, only also radioactive, used as foundation, is just a darwin award.

Men are attracted to the same thing as women: active happy confident people. Not confident? Do something you're confident at. Kaylee Frye may not be confident at flirting, but she's confident in an engine room.

I thought I bought a chunk of real bizmuth crystal when I was a kid. It was boxy and terraced and pretty and iridescent, and apparently the real stuff actually does look like that.

But then I eventually figured out it was just treated aluminum leaf over cardboard because it didn't make my arms sore to pick it up. And confirmed it with a density test using string and a glass tube.

There was a study I read once about social norms where people are more likely to trust a woman wearing a subtle moderate amount of makeup than none or really OBVIOUS makeup. But I don't wear makeup because I prefer looking like a hideous hag beast and not having to deal with social considerations like talking and looking at people.

Thank you DT, I have always found it odd that women think men like fako breasts, I mean really. The only reason for that in my opinion is if its necessary, cancer etc. Other than that ... why?

LOL. Agree with everything. Except I think Kaylee is pretty confident at flirting too.

But yes, confidence and happiness do more for attractiveness than anything else. I would throw in good posture too. I think, personally, that is Jessica Alba's beauty secret.

Feh, I think heels are as ridiculous, counterproductive and STUPID as ties.

Seriously, the amount of effort put into such ludicrous things confuses me as much as it prolly does Byte cause we likely view it from the same angle.

I've actually given some flak to one potential interview over having long (manicured?) nails, dangly jewelry and wearing heels - this did NOT impress me whatever and caused me to think she was an accident waiting to happen, especially as she was interested in a post which'd require doing security rounds in the vicinity of heavy industrial machinery.

You should be who you are - not try to warp yourself into what a malicious society would prefer you to be, mentally OR physically.

Hello,

It's not even accurate. Difficulty implies something which will require effort, but able to be overcome. Body parts dying and falling off is not a difficulty in healing. It's an abject failure to heal.

It's like telling someone that inserting a shotgun barrel into their mouth and pulling the trigger could make it challenging to breathe.

Yay Frem! If a girlie shows up for an interview looking like she wants a date, not work, toss her out!

I've never understood why it's that way for normal job interviews. If that's legal (and expected!) then why isn't prostitution legal? It's the same thing, isn't it?

High hells are dumb, they're like wearing a hobble. Posture is much better when you're centered over your feet, not boobs and butt sticking out. Eastern practices teach a difference between inner spiral and outer spiral, posture wise. Outer spiral is good for working on the muscles, but you don't really want to be in it all the time.

Hello,

High heels are most sexy when on boots. Also, they are most sexy when not used for walking.

It's not the heels themselves that are sexy, it's the posture that they force. Of course, if you had good posture the heels would be de trop.

DT, that's interesting about the posture, so that's what the menfolk fancy in the high heel wearing woman? My dad thinks women wearing high heels is sexy, sounds like he's pretty average in his tastes since lots of men appear to agree.

I think high heels are nuts, but some women swear they are more comfy... I wear an 11 1/2...It's like looking at a kangaroo wearing plow implements...and they usually look like that after I'm done with 'em...

I only wear makeup for special occaisions, weddin's and the like... Otherwise it don't fit, makes me itch...And yes, I like chrome. And brass, copper, cast iron, gold, and leather...

Interesting, I wondered if there is a common thread between all the girls, wonder what the common thread with the guys here is?? Do you all have mustaches or wear boots or drive motorcycles or something?? Collect Hello Kitty paraphenalia??

Well, duh. Must be y'all really like to argue

Humans didn't evolve to walk on tip toe, therefore that posture can't be natural, therefore it can't be good posture.

High heels, especially some of the nutty ones out there are a form of social control not altogether different from foot binding or corset wearing. You simply have to walk carefully if you wear them, no running, striding, cutting across lawns.

Chinese men used to find the shuffle that women with bound feet did an incredible turn on.

Re the post. In my experience doctors spend so much time giving you warnings that you are nervous about getting an ingown toenail removed in case of complications.

The only times I've ever worn makeup are for the two weddings I've been in, the school play in eighth grade so my face would show up on stage and a small handful of the times I've performed at singing. Other than that, including most of my singing performances, I don't wear it, I feel quite confident with my physical appearance, I feel I'm pretty and so don't need makeup, plus I don't want to waste my time on makeup, it eats time.

Actually, balls of the feet, that being precisely why the result is attractive. Humans evolved to walk on our toes, but we got fat, and so we slouched back to heels. The heel is really supposed to be a hinge.

Another thing that humans commonly do that we're not designed for is lock our knees. I think that the support ability of these body parts is actually designed for a resting position.

Just trying running. I think if my heels hit or my knees locked it would be pretty painful.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Missed most of this and didn't read the link, but caught blaming both doc and woman. I disagree; while it's correct, I don't expect people to hear all a doctor says, it's human nature and most of us haven't yet evolved past the "doctor as god" stage. But the doctor's been trained and it's his job to be clear. Wait, I take that back; it's also human nature for doctors to be blase and forget that people don't listen, so yeah, I guess I DO blame both, but understand who it can happen. It's a shame, tho'.

People not listening I also put down to not wanting to hear...nobody likes going to the doc, nobody likes having treatment or surgery, so I think there's a natural tendency to gloss over stuff. Doctors treat so many people, it's gotta be rote to give the instructions they do, and they probably mistakenly expect people are LISTENING.

Just human foibles, but I LISTEN now and long ago lost the "doctor as god" mentality--but that everyone should!

No ape I'm aware of is digitigrade. All of them are plantigrade. Some monkeys and lower primates are digitigrade but other than that I don't think it can be argued that humans are or were meant to be.

You're right, we don't walk on heels, either, but rather the entire foot is used for balance.

Well said monsieur! As you well know 'zay are best for 'za fighting!

I believe high heels were designed mainly to create the illusion of longer legs - as with other things mentioned it's to exaggerate female features to attract attention, and not for "social control." As shown by the posts here many women do not feel the need - those that do I'm sure feel it's worth the drawbacks.
