Or could this have something to do with it?

Quote:

Attorney Donald Schutte is representing the Martinez family and has notified the city that the family intends to sue. "Obviously she's going to have some pretty significant medical expenses and we'll be looking for the city to pay those," Schutte told the paper. "We don't have anything personal against either the chief or the police department. We just want to know whether or not this was an appropriate use of what's essentially a weapon on a child."

Kid has EPILEPSY...which 50,000 volts in the brain probably don't help. Her lawyer is a former 10th Judicial District Judge...

Ouch. And having epilepsy can sometimes be accompanied by some mood disorders, which is potentially where the argument might have stemmed from in the first place.

So the question I have now is why did the mother have to take the girl to the police station to settle a family argument, and demand CHARGES against the girl when the girl tried to run, and why did it take her daughter getting a TASER to the head for the mother to see reason?

Escalating force: an example of why it's not good parenting.

ANTHONYT

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

This tragic story encapsulates much of my philosophy on liberty.

People see behavior and find it offensive.

They appeal to an authority to stop the behavior with force.

An Authority stops the behavior, using their power irresponsibly.

People realize, too late, that calling in an oppressive authority was the wrong choice.

FREMDFIRMA

Part of that - is that the State attempts to monopolise the use of force, even in ones own defense, or regarding a matter which should not whatever involve the State, part of a larger problem including but not limited to, vilification of self defense, but also including stuff like this.

I will say that if you have failed to negotiate with your child via reason OR force, you've really seriously screwed up - most of the time reason fails with a child is because the adult is being unreasonable, at least in the childs opinion.

All parents should ponder three themes, constantly.
1. Is having it done RIGHT NOW, so very bloody important ?
2. Why does this matter so much ?
3. Is this really about my ego ?

The first two, if->Yes/Then Reason, you'd be amazed what a simple coherent explaination can accomplish as opposed to BECAUSE I SAID SO, followed by, OR ELSE!

But then, in the rare cases where the situation is beyond the parent, often there's no one to go to, no one trustworthy, anyways, ask Maryanne Goldboldo about that one, ehe ?

And that *IS* something we need to fix, socially, legally, politically - as a society, and as individuals.

As for the rest, ponder for a moment that the work which puts food on my table is being "Force" which certain folks can go to INSTEAD of the police, which is both discreet and trustworthy.

Monopolising force leads to abuse, always.

DREAMTROVE

The police have been completely obviated by technology. Can we please get rid of them already? If anyone were really in need of assistance, they'd use a cell phone, or twitter.

Even the existence of police makes people less self-reliant.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

I wonder how the girl is doing now? Was there any lasting injury? (note that I don't know that much about tazors so I'm seriously asking this question)
