House Republicans attempted to wrap up their drive to cut billions of dollars from the current year's budget, considering a slew of amendments to legislation that would slash government spending.

Among the items approved Friday, lawmakers approved amendments that would block all federal funding for Planned Parenthood and bar any federal agency from spending money on implementing the new health care law for the remainder of the current fiscal year.

Earlier this week, Boehner raised eyebrows when he predicted budget cuts could cost some federal jobs, adding, "so be it."

However, on Thursday he backed off the tough love stance.

"Listen, I don't want anyone to lose their job whether they are a federal employee or not. But come on! We're broke!," Boehner said. "We've got to make tough decisions and the American people sent their representatives here to Washington to make tough decisions on their behalf.

The White House has vowed to veto the budget if it contains the deep cuts that House Republican are proposing.

Although the 2011 budget up for debate only covers the next seven months, March through September, the clock is ticking to pass something soon. The current stop-gap measure that's keeping the lights on at federal agencies expires March 4.

If lawmakers fail to pass a budget -- or at least another stop-gap measure -- by March 4, the federal government could be shut down like it was during the GOP showdown with the Clinton administration in 1995.

Many amendments were aimed at undoing White House priorities, such as the Environmental Protection Agency's efforts to cut greenhouse gases.

Noting what they want to cut pretty much defines the right, and is picayune in the end anyway...they're still not willing to tackle "entitlements" or the military, which are the biggies.

At least Behner lost out on his pork "backup engine" for the F35. I guess that's something...

So what now; a government shutdown? Won't that be fun and, considering how well it worked LAST time, a real boon for the Republicans.

Politicians are idiots. All of them.

Amen, seeing this bullshit up here in MI and WI too, add more pork, slash vital services, flip the citizens the bird while laughing in their face.

All the money in the world for war, war, war, but homeless shelters, feeding the poor, too bad, suck it up and die!

And folks wonder, they WONDER, why I despise these scumbags so much - especially when the Gov Shutdown "crisis" up here was sparked by Republicans entering a FAKE budget just to cause it and force a tax increase they could loot for more pork while screaming and pointing their fingers at Granholm for it, who's only fault in the matter was the assumption that her fellow legislators MIGHT do the job they were assigned instead of destroying the state for political points and $$$$.

I mean, did it never occur to people that Detroit voted in that scumbag Kwame Kilpatrick because the candidates offered by the other guys were EVEN SLEAZIER ?

That's much of the problem with american politics these days, no one brings their A-game cause all you need is to be a couple shades less slimy than the other guy, and the Republicans have proved over and over that they can ALWAYS suck the bar lower, I mean, what's next,a Madoff/Abramoff presidential ticket - it's almost train wreck fascination, watching the race to the gutter.

Hey, as Boehner said, if Americans lose their jobs, "then so be it."

At least he managed to keep from crying while he said it...

I fail to see where he backed off his tough love stance....Oh, I see....he didn't. That piece is a hot mess. Hilarious.
