Japan has oxygen bars: FOR DOGS.
Quote:

Dogs are slowly replacing human children. In Japan, there are already more households with dogs than there are households with kids, and the service industry is right up there to pamper them. Here we see a canine oxygen bar—just one of the many luxury services available to dogs in Japan, like haute couture and yoga.

The owners of this facility already have about 20 oxygen bars for humans, but decided that our dog friends could benefit from clean air unattainable in cities like Tokyo. The dogs are placed in this glass cylinder and blasted with air for 30 minutes. Then, supposedly, they feel better.

People pay high prices for bottled water.

Is there room on the market for yet another high-priced water in a designer bottle? How about one whose source is in a pristine but ecologically threatened environment? Florida businessman Jeff Moats believes so. Early next year, if a factory and production line are completed on time, his $12 million privately financed startup plans to start selling a superpremium brand of water called Equa in upscale restaurants and trendy food stores like Whole Foods Markets (WFMI). While environmentalists might be concerned, the allure to consumers, Moats believes, will be Equa's purity and minimalist bottles shaped like rain droplets. His source? Brazil's Amazon rainforest, which Moats calls "probably the last place on Earth that holds boundless mystery and mystique."
On certain days we're told to stay indoors because of the pollution.
Quote:

While no air pollution can possibly compare to the smog choking Moscow right now, people in the U.S. are reminded that they can check the air pollution for "code red" alerts in their own city on this site. Code red indicates that ozone or particle pollution levels are high enough to cause health problems.

Suggestions for dealing with "code red" days of pollution:

1. Avoid being outdoors when bad air levels are at their highest, which is typically between 3-6p.m.

2. Don't exercise outdoors during that time.

3. Combine trips and carpool, and avoid fueling up if possible (the gasoline fumes add to the pollution) and don't idle your vehicle.

When you were young, did you ever envision our world coming to this?

"When you were young, did you ever envision our world coming to this?"

Hello,

Well, yeah. In middle school it was Cyberpunk 2013. In High School it was Cyberpunk 2020. The prosthetic technology is a bit behind schedule, but the degradation of the environment, the private mercenary armies, and the Corporations that control the governments of the world are all in place. The economic collapses that turn the U.S. into a 2nd rate power are also on track. The game even predicted the decline of the dollar and the rise of the Euro (which was not yet a currency.)

Sad that a dystopian role playing game I played in the late 80's and throughout the 90's accurately predicted many of the things I take for granted in the year 2010.

Well, yeah, I guess I'm asking the wrong people, for a start. Remember I grew up in the '50s and '60s. Back then, this kind of world WAS unthinkable! Getting out of poodle skirts and learning now to crawl under our desks when the Ruskies came for us were our biggest worries!

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I wrote a Japanese scifi story for my high school English class that featured oxygen vending machines and intermittent water supplies. In 1971.

I'm writing one now about global climate change. It's not pretty. I expect it will come true in about 15 years.

Don't forget Steve Jacksons CAR WARS accuractely predicting the first Gulf War within three months.

Of course, the part of that which didn't (sadly) come true was the mass lynching of corporate lawyers, although, yanno, there's still hope...
