I'm sorry, but it's to laugh...you just GOTTA laugh: They're ACTORS, guys, y'know??
Quote:

Unsatisfied with being belligerent at town hall meetings and creating racist signs, Tea Party activists are swarming on Williamsburg, Virginia this summer to ruin educational family vacations by yelling and asking costumed reenactors how to overthrow the government. Ugh.

There's always a guy on a guided tour who's wearing a fanny pack and knee high socks, asking really stupid questions and embarrassing the rest of his family, right? Now add some loud, uninformed right wing zealotry, and you've got Colonial Williamsburg Summer 2010! The Washington Post went to Williamsburg and described the scene there these days, as Tea Party activists take in the sights and look to meet the Founding Fathers in person:
Quote:

They stand in the crowd listening closely as the costumed actors relive dramatic moments in the founding of our country. They clap loudly when an actor portraying Patrick Henry delivers his "Give me liberty or give me death" speech. They cheer and hoot when Gen. George Washington surveys the troops behind the original 18th-century courthouse. And they shout out about the tyranny of our current government during scenes depicting the nation's struggle for freedom from Britain.

"General, when is it appropriate to resort to arms to fight for our liberty?" asked a tourist on a recent weekday during "A Conversation with George Washington," a hugely popular dialogue between actor and audience in the shaded backyard of Charlton's Coffeehouse

Yes, man wearing a wig and dressed up as George Washington, do tell us! The Tea Partiers travel to Williamsburg seeking answers from actors, as opposed to, say, checking out a book from the library. Fair enough. Some Tea Partiers, like Bob Rohrbacher, who was inspired by none other than Glenn Beck to visit Williamsburg, think the members of our big bad government should "all should come here and listen. They've forgotten about America." But the Tea Partiers themselves don't always hear what they want to hear:
Quote:

Sometimes, the activists appear surprised when the Founding Fathers don't always provide the "give 'em hell" response they seem to be looking for.

When a tourist asked George Washington a question about what should be done to those colonists who remain loyal to the tyrannical British king, Washington interjected: "I hope that we're all loyal, sir" -- a reminder that Washington, far from being an early agitator against the throne, was among those who sought to avoid revolution until the very end.

When another audience member asked the general to reflect on the role of prayer and religion in politics, he said: "Prayers, sir, are a man's private concern. They are not a matter of public interest. And nor should they be. There is nothing so personal as a man's relationship with his creator."

(Sigh).

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I like to believe that the Tea Partiers can have fun with everyone else in communicating with these historical re-enactors. I note this: ""A Conversation with George Washington," a hugely popular dialogue between actor and audience" is a hugely popular dialogue, not just for Tea Partiers, but for all comers. Why should the Tea Partiers be derided for enjoying this dialogue, and not others? Why is it the Tea Partiers who need to check out a book from the library, while all other tourists who enjoy this show are presumably normal educated persons?

Sometimes this anti-tea-party rhetoric dismays me. It smacks of 'All Muslims are Terrorists' nonsense. These are just people enthusiastic about certain aspects of American History, enjoying a show about American History. They're not ruining things for anyone.

*sigh*

The Tea Partiers are serious about this stuff; as evidenced by the "when is it okay to take up arms" question. It's not the same, in my opinion. Using the Founding Fathers in an ad endorsing attacking the government is a prime example. I'm sorry, but I see it differently.

As to the town halls, there are tons of videos of people disrupting them, don't make me laugh.

As to SF, yup, they're a sanctuary city, and know what's weird? They haven't blown up or fallen off the Earth...nor is there more violence from all them illegal Messicans...wow.

As usual, I didn't watch the videos. "The only ones being belligerent and disrespectful at town hall meetings" was sufficient to tell me I needn't bother with the first two, given I've already seen the many videos of Tea Partiers being belligerent...AND the "instructions" for them to do so. The other one was an idjit, I certainly agree, and disrespectful...but "belligerent"? No, he was quite calm and relaxed, I saw no belligerence

Which is neither here nor there: You wanna see REAL belligerence, disruption and disrespect?

That's enough, I don't want to spend more time on it.

Annnd Kane provides us with a perfect example of the very behavior we're calling em on, how convenient.

Yanno, if I was gonna cosplay one of the founders, it'd be Patrick Henry, cause he's just awesome, not to mention he was damn near prophetic - almost every word of warning he gave em came true, often far beyond his worst-case estimates.

Normally I lurk on political stuff, but as a reenactor I feel compelled on this one. Please people, keep your wacka-do family at home. I've played everything from a British soldier in WWII to a confederate in the civil war, and CHRIST ON ICE SKATES do we have some crazy and moronic people in this country. People coming up to me when I'm a confederate, "I'll be right there with you guys when Arizona succeeds!" I just repress an eye twitch I've developed and move along.

This comes from the same brand of people who ask me

"it's 92 today, is that wool hot?"

"You can't really know you're being accurate, there were no cameras in WWII"

"Are those real guns?"

"Is that a real fire?"

"you actually sleep in tents?!"

and my favorite "so why are you dressed up like British guys, they weren't in WWII"

"...we need a hood ornament..."

I can certainly see where one would get annoyed with em, thankfully I don't do such as a regular practice, but only occasionally to round out the Confederate body count for civ-war stuff, or as cavalry since I can actually ride a horse without falling the hell off and the beasties like me.
(this is rarely reciprocated, mind you)

Of course, they always wanna do it when it's so bloody hot outside, and them uniforms are murder in the heat, yuck!

At least I can get away with my syphillis shades(1), cause otherwise I'd be too damn blind to know which direction to go since I really AM light sensitive, but not for THAT reason, no.

Reenact, you have my sympathy. From what I read, that's just the sort of thing they were talking about.

I can only imagine what you have to go through. I hope it doesn't take much of your enjoyment in being involved in such things away.

The only thing I can come close with was when we had a booth at the local Renaissance Faire. Our booth sold embroidered shawls, Jane and I had both worked for a year to get enough of them together, they were really gorgeous. CONSISTENTLY people would come in, finger the shawls, then mutter (loud enough for us to hear) "Heck, I could do that!"

They couldn't, nor would they take the time (handwork isn't just an endangered art, it's extinct!), nor did they realize how much work was involved. We put prices up that reflected less than a buck an hour--we enjoyed having a booth, we were both embroidery fanatics, so it was worth it to us.

In the end, we hung a sign on every piece detailing the amount of time spent embroidering it. We didn't hear the muttering as much after that, but it's pretty disheartening when stupid people dim your pleasure in something by being stupid!

And I thank you for giving a perfect example of what I was trying to show by posting this. I have nothing against people "playing" along with you and dressing up, etc., tho' I'm sure you giggled and snorted as much as we did when you saw people's attempts to dress in period (!). But when people bring their politics to something which is supposed to be a re-enactment of a piece of history, I find it sad.

You go, kiddo, enjoy! I'd love to hear more detail about the stuff you've been involved with; out here in CA, we don't get stuff like that. Closest we come is SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) which gave birth to the Ren Faires; they have balls, meetings of Celts, sword fights, jousts, etc., but it's not the same as re-enacting OUR history, y'know?

Frem: A night with venus, a lifetime with mercury eh?

Niki, luckily these people tend to be so mixed in with hundreds of other, interested, appreciative, or at the least less expressive, members of the public who come to see us.

I mostly do WWII, I've only stepped into the CW stuff once for a stint, but I usually get wind of what's going on at those by a few friends who do several eras (one does French & Indian, Napoleonic, WWI, WWII(Brit, Russian, US), and I think Boer War..).

One story in particular came from those who reenacted out at Gettysburg. As anyone who's been there knows, the battlefield has been preserved, but is scattered with memorials to different units. These range from good sized marble tablets to 4 story statues and obelisks. One woman asked a friend of mine "why didn't they just use all these memorials as cover...." lol

Doing WWII is a bit different than ren faire or even CW, the guys who tend to join with the US units are a larger percentage gun/military buffs than deep historians like some others. Ren Faire tends to attract those who are more theatrical, and civil war tends to attract a mix of theatrical, historian, military enthusiasts, and guys who like to do little more than wave a confedy flag and get wasted all weekend (thankfully not to many of them) As part of a British unit, we do a lot of 1st person portrayals which is uncommon in WWII reenacting because the military nuts usually prefer to be what I call "a teacher/curator in funny clothing" Which is fine, and by all remarks understandable as US culture in 1939-45 is not different enough that it's difficult to grasp (they still had refridgerators etc) where as in CW or before that, you have making your own clothes, very different use of language. But for us, the combination of being from '39 and from another culture, not to mention a different military tradition, gives us more license to actually reenact which we thoroughly enjoy.

Like I said though, I love the hobby and the occasional chucklehead which makes me facepalm when they leave will never ruin it for me.

How neat, thank you! The memorials remark made me snort and giggle...sometimes the human brain just leaves me shaking my head!

Yes, I figured there was a difference, especially the firearms part. And definitely Ren Faires are more theater! Mostly, I'm tickled the idjits are more than made up for by the fun; that's half of what it's all about, right?

We had to make our clothes, too, and they had to be period appropriate (no zippers, etc.)...and our booths couldn't have nails or anything modern like that (we were even further back than YOU! ). At least in the booths we didn't have to act the part unless we wanted to, 'cuz back then I was way too shy.

The first-person portrayals must be especially fun; I never had the guts or thought I would be good enough to join the "participants"...tho' the first two years, I was part of a folk dancing group, so we were part of the theater aspect, dancing in the middle of the "street". But actually participating; I didn't have what it took; hence the booth.

I wish I lived where I could see some of this stuff, it sounds really neat. History before your eyes as it were, which isn't most of what Ren Faires are about...money-making propositions they are, fer shore.

I do regret that all our early history is Back East and I've never been able to visit any of it, I think we Westerners miss out on a lot.

Gawd, I love the photo! Except that they look older than soldiers were then, it could be a shot right out of the war (for me, anyway!).

Do you have any shots of the CW stuff? I've seen scenes in movies of such reenactments, always thought it was a neat concept. Especially when done Down South itself, where some stuff I've seen was done in period-appropriate mansions, with people playing southern belles and servants and all. So kewl...

I'm getting downright envious...I wish we had stuff like that out here!

Hee, hee, hee, Frem, you do my soul good. As to animals: Me, too! I spent most of my free time at the Ren Faire hanging around the jousting just to watch the horses.

My best "friend" when I worked at Marineworld was a water buffalo...honest! I'd go there first thing I arrived every day, he'd trot over to the fence and go over my hand and arm with his big black runny nose. I didn't mind it, wiped it off, he was just sooo kewl!

There are few animals in the world I can't get a kick out of and want to touch touch touch... I loved our e-mail exchanges about the horses in Ladyhawke, ANY discussion of animals and I'm off and running...sigh...

Hahaha, Byte - back then just about the ONLY time someone would wear shaded glasses was due to a really bad cause of syphillis causing them to be very light sensitive, and as RE hinted, the usual treatment for it was mercury based, and both toxic and nasty...

Anyhow, it fits with the persona/character I do for em, Corporal Junkett, unit clerk and general dogsbody, and none too very bright - I can actually talk a lot of historically-accurate "period" smack, too, which is always appreciated.

As for animals, I get along with em better than people, the hard part for me with the CivWar folk was figuring out a saddle, since up till then I'd never used one, either the horse lets me ride or they don't, and they usually do - hell, I got one of my great aunts "unbroken" horsies to let me ride him for a few minutes once, when I was a kid.

You also would prolly have been amused at me talking that monster belgian (I think he was a belgian, he was FEKKIN HUGE) into standing next to the fence so I could climb it and then leap onto him from the top rail, which he took with this amused "silly humans" kinda expression - prolly looked like a spider monkey riding a pony, cause I was sooo small, and he was sooo huge, and he didn't even have a bridle or nothing on, so I was having to lay flat against the back of his neck and kinda guide him by leaning this way or that, my great auntie near laughed herself sick while my mother tried oh so hard not to show how horrified she was (she had lots and LOTS of practice, by then) that I was gonna get dumped off and squished.

Just to let you know, the folks at Williamsburg are more than just actors. They really research the period and have quite a back-story for their character. I had a long discussion with one gentleman about his experiences in Lord Dunmore's war of 1774, and the training it gave the Colonials for the possibly pending conglict with Great Britain.

Well the British army did allow in more aged recruits, especially late in the war. However, most of the guys there are under 25, one's like 30 and yeah a few are approaching 40, but hey it's a hobby.

As for the dirt, this was as us during the phoney war setup we did, so everyone would have been pretty spick and span.

here's the confederates I fell in with for my stint in CW. That was a very different experience. Though, these were all northern guys like me.

Do they use horses? It would be double neat if they used horses...maybe even triple neat. Do they have cannons, like on wheels and all? Gawd, I'd love to see it...

yes there were 2 or 3 full cavalry groups out there and also close to 12 cannons on the field (only about half were full sized, some farbs bring out mini cannons call them "mountain howitzers" but they're really just like 1/2 scale models of the real guns,) but some of the real guns were there, man are they loud

Okay, now I'm officially jealous!

To go back to the original issue, however, I maintain that you have given us exactly the perspective the article was pointing out. The cries of "patriotism!" and so forth that I hear from the Tea Party make me shake my head. I don't believe what they think all this patriotic stuff would be if it were actually put into practice as "our forefathers" deigned it to be.

And the obsession with "America as it used to be" and dressing up in Revolution costumes (which you see at MANY Tea Party demonstrations), added to that guy who was putting out the videos with actors portrayed as founding fathers, only enhances my believe that they are living in some self-deluded fantasy that going backward is going to fix everything. I understand it on one level but I don't understand it on another.
