Hello,

Why does a War spending bill contain Gulf relief provisions? Is it so that lawmakers will feel pressured to vote YES on it, or so that citizens will feel better about buying bullets and bombs and disseminating them to foreign nations running low on hate?

Are there any nations on Earth that don't tack on extras to their proposed laws in some kind of feeding frenzy? "Hey look, a new bill! Let's stick something we want on it!" Is there any nation that judges each bill on its merits without the ability to attach add-ons?

Finally, is there any chance that congress won't approve this war spending? We could use a few dozen more Ron Pauls to put the breaks on this stuff.

Gotta change the way we do legislation, then, or push for the line-item veto. As it stands, any legislator can ask for an amendment to be added to any bill, and they can throw the most ludicrous things in there. To do away with that, we'd have to do away with the way the rules of Congress are established, how they're written, and how they're acted upon.

But yeah, that's how you get poison pill amendments and and pork added into bills.

I think that's a good question: DOES any other democratic or semi-democratic form of government not do this? I'm sure there are some, but I'm not knowledgeable about that.

If there was a line-item veto, that would be fine, just so long as the legislation got sent back to the representatives for re-vote. It's only fair that the reps know exactly what they are voting for. (Not that they do currently.)

What would YOU do?

Get busy. Find a challenger to them. Work and campaign for them. Get them elected. Hope they are not as corruptible as the person they replace. If they are (and they usually are), start again, from square one.

What I would NOT do is go on a shooting spree about it.

You seem to be very happy when YOUR chosen candidates are elected, and you seem happy enough to pay THEIR chosen "undue taxes" and carry out THEIR "socialistic ideologies". Why are you so intent on denying others (the clear majority, in this case) the same opportunity?

Y'know, for the record, I hated Bush (I know - I can hear your gasps of shock!). But it never occurred to me to say out loud or even suggest that things in this country would magically get better is only someone had put a .50 cal round through his noggin. It never occurred to me because, like him or not, he was more or less the elected President of the country (even though he was clearly NOT elected by a majority).

If you don't like your elected representatives, VOTE THEM OUT.

Here's a hint for you: If you're trying to overthrow your representatives, you might want to look to someone who is actually fairly close to them ideologically, but a little more to your side than to the other side. If you go looking for someone who's 180 degrees opposite of the incumbent, you're almost guaranteed to lose, because this guy got to BE the incumbent by representing the people, and a majority of them had to vote for him at least once, so he's pretty close to what most people are looking for, and at the very least, he's NOT the exact opposite of what the majority of voters in your area are looking for.

And if you don't like your representation, and you have no chance of voting them out, MOVE. Move to a place that's more what you're looking for. I was raised mostly in west Texas, in a VERY conservative, VERY Republican area. I did not fit the mold of that place, ever, and so I left it when it became clear that I could not change it. But before I did, I worked to get several Democrats elected to local, state, and federal offices. Change wasn't coming as quickly as I'd have liked, but it DID come, albeit slowly. A few years ago, that town reelected - in a landslide - a very young, openly gay mayor. How's that for changing attitudes?

Meanwhile, I'd moved on to greener (or, in this case, BLUE-er) pastures, heading out to Austin, a bastion of liberalism in a state full of red.
