For all those who see the police as the enemy; you're not alone. And in America, it's all too easy to take those feelings out on innocent cops. Narrow minds and black-and-white thinking leave no room for the realities of today, in my opinion. These guys died just doing their legal duty, what they were hired to do; how does that make them the enemy?

Two police officers were fatally shot and another two were wounded Thursday in two separate shootings allegedly by the same suspects in West Memphis, Arkansas, police said.

The two suspects, who were using an assault weapon, were themselves fatally shot, said Inspector Bert Shelton, who is assigned to city hall for the West Memphis Police Department.

The incident began around 11:36 a.m. (12:36 p.m. ET), when West Memphis patrolman Bill Evans made a traffic stop on a white minivan. After the vehicle exited the Interstate onto an off-ramp near College Avenue, Sgt. Brandon Paudert arrived on the scene as backup, Sadler said.

"It is our belief that Officer Evans was shoved to the ground by one of the suspects in the minivan and gunfire was directed at both officers," Sadler said.

The suspects then fled, driving east in the minivan, leaving one man dead and the other fatally wounded.

Within minutes, officers from other agencies -- including the Arkansas State Police and the Arkansas Fish and Game Commission -- began to converge on the area, looking for the suspects, he said.

About 90 minutes later, a minivan believed to be the one that had been seen leaving the shooting site was spotted in a parking lot of a nearby Wal-Mart, Sadler said.

There, it was approached by Crittenden County Sheriff Dick Busby and Chief Enforcement Officer W.A. Wren, who were traveling in the same vehicle, he said.

Both men were wounded in a gunbattle initiated by the suspects, who were using a long rifle and a handgun, Sadler said.

The gunbattle ended after "a very brave, young wildlife officer in his state truck rammed the suspect vehicle, preventing an exit of the suspects," who were killed, Sadler said.

Both wounded officers were taken to Regional Medical Center at Memphis, where they were in critical condition, said hospital spokeswoman Vivian Crawford.

Both of the dead officers leave widows and young children, he said. Paudert was 39, Evans was 38.

I was just about to post on that, Nik.

I was wonderin about the why, yanno ?

But as I have been trying to pound through the thick skulls of the folk around here, this kinda thing, starting what amounts to a war with em, is stupid, all it does is get people killed, all the wrong ones, and then each side uses the casualties as an excuse to go after the other all that much harder until it drives both sides insane.

And you need look no further than Israel and Palestine to see where that winds up, and no further than Biafra to see where it ENDS.

Hell, even though I consider it the most important, let's skip the human cost for a sec and point out that it's not even tactically sensible!

Don't fight a force superior in numbers and equipment head on, cut their supply lines (budget cuts) and clip their officers (get folks up top fired) and force them to surrender instead of having to kill them.

There's a David Drake book in the Hammers Slammers series that specifically addresses this; The Warrior.

The Sincannmo Federation hires the Slammers against the Hashemite Brotherhood and their mercs, but Hammer, iron fisted bastard that he is, sees no need to slaughter for it's own sake, wasting lives and resources needlessly, and so after knocking out their air defense, and most of their armor in a brutal three prong attack, deliberately leaves them an escape route down a narrow, rocky valley out of the killing zone, since they at that point no longer even have the organisation left TO surrender.

His plan was to let them flee and the butt kicking he just delivered fully soak in, resulting in a surrender once they got themselves sorted out and realized they were completely out of other options.

Enter Sgt Samuel "Slick" Des Grieux, a guy who reminds me quite a bit of Wulfie, and the plan sticking in his craw - at which point, against orders he grounds his tank at the bottom of that pass and proceeds to commit a slaughter of epic proportions (which does get him unceremoniously punted from the Slammers, and nearly shot by Joachim Stueben).

Like all the Slammers books, despite being based around a Mercenary company, it drives home rather sharply the lesson that in the end, killing people doesn't solve a fuckin thing, and in fact causes more problems than it may temporarily solve.

But that's a lesson humans seem to have trouble learning, don't they ?

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I feel for the dead and the wounded, and all the friends and families who have suffered emotional trauma due to this tragedy.

I remember an incident that could have ended this way when I dispatched for Hialeah. Thank God it went another route, and no one was killed or seriously wounded.
