-----------------------

I found this item on ABC's website Frem. Appears that Slick Willy is opposed to the Soda tax. Looks like you got your work cut out for ya.

I'm with you though. Even if I didn't think it's crapola, anything that SlickWilly is opposed to is probably a good idea, ROFL.

Seriously though, I think you're right. It's stuff like this that should, note I say SHOULD, wake people up to the ridiculous abuses of government officials. IF they were more careful with how they spent our money, they wouldn't constantly need more of it, IMO.

When WE run out of money, we have to do without, right?

Not if you're a corporation, you don't!

I'm with Frem - I'm going balls-out on supporting taxes on EVERYTHING people find the least bit enjoyable. Porn? Tax the fuck out of it (literally). Booze? Tax it 'til people feel like they have a hangover BEFORE they start drinking! Any car the least bit fun to drive? Run 'em over with a huge tax! Fast food? Fast tax increase! Movies? Here's your ticket to a feature-sized tax! Gas? Pump up the taxes! Night clubs? Your taxes are on the VIP list! Titty bars? Show us your taxes! Music? The hills are alive with the sound of taxes! TV? Now a short commercial break... for more taxes!

In short, EVERYTHING you enjoy that somebody else might not, get ready to have it taxed out the wazoo. Hey, nobody stood up for smokers, right?

Get ready for so many new taxes and fees you're not just going to be screwed, you're going to be screwed to the floor!

Don't like it? Quit supporting it!

Oh. My bad. I didn't think about it like that, lol. I was just thinking of Frem's thread about the tobacco tax and then the 'junk food and soda' tax, heee!

Anyway, Frem is in 'direct opposition' to SlickWilly Clinton. How's that? It does sound better, to me.

Thanks - we aims to please!

Thing is, many of us are after the same basic things; we're just coming at it from different directions.

And I wouldn't even really mind so much, paying higher taxes for my cigarettes (I'm down to two cigarettes a day now, so I'm not going to be in their target demographic much longer). What I *DO* mind, like Frem, is the lie of it. If you're going to use this money for education, fine. If you're going to use it for treating the medical ills of smokers, fine. But DON'T tell us that and then mop it all into the same general slush fund. Put it in a bespoke fund, a "lockbox" if you will, and KEEP IT ONLY FOR THE PURPOSE FOR WHICH YOU ORIGINALLY CLAIMED YOU WERE DOING IT!

Want a portion of the alcohol tax to go to alcoholism treatment? Fine. Want it to fund alcohol education programs? Okay. Want to fund rehab centers with it? Do it. But DON'T take that money and blow it on 6-Martini dinner parties for your corporate bigwig buddies.

(And please note that when I say "you" and "your", I'm referring to Congress and the State legislatures, not to YOU, Karma!)

Mikey ?

Considering some of the ridiculous shit that excise tax on alcohol is used for...

Case in point: THIS.

U.S. Will Pay $2.6 Million to Train Chinese Prostitutes to Drink Responsibly on the Job
http://www.cnsnews.com/public/content/article.aspx?RsrcID=47976

The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAA), a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will pay $2.6 million in U.S. tax dollars to train Chinese prostitutes to drink responsibly on the job.

Dr. Xiaoming Li, the researcher conducting the program, is director of the Prevention Research Center at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit.

The grant, made last November, refers to prostitutes as "female sex workers"--or FSW--and their handlers as "gatekeepers."

Tell me that doesn't sound a LOT like a fucking excuse for a bunch of politicians and research geeks to get drunk and laid on the taxpayer dime ?

And since he's local, and within spitting range of the Geek Farms operations...
http://prognosis.med.wayne.edu/spotlight/383
I think imma have a personal chat with Doc Li about it in the near future.

Somehow I doubt that conversations gonna be pleasant.

America loves a winner!

Gov't will never have enough. The reach of Gov't for your $$ is ever insatiable. Whether it's taxing college students a 'surcharge' for being a student, imaginary climate crisis excuses, or taxing cigarettes or sodas, it's nothing but more of the same, more Townshend style attacks on our freedoms.

There was a revolution in 1776. Will America rouse itself up enough to put an end to it again?

I sorta think not.

I saw that surcharge thing on the news a few days ago. Is it Rhode Island? Anyway, I saw it, where they're taxing students at all 4 'private' or non-government schools, including Brown.

Sounds like change we can believe in to me! (snort)

I didn't mean this to pick on you Frem, I hope you know that. I guess I should have just added it to your 'someone's gonna pay' thread. I just happened on the article after your thread about supporting the junk food tax, and thought I'd pass it on.

Anyway, like I said before, I'm on your side on this. enough is enough. If they spent our damn tax dollars more wisely, they wouldn't need so much.

They're sending Billy Bubba to the country he and the previous administration so severely fucked ?

Oh that'll be interesting.

See, a while back there was Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a Haitain leader who was starting to get the country back on track see ?

And we couldn't have THAT.
Y'all DO know what happened to him, right ?
Or maybe not, there was maybe 24 hours of coverage before that one got drop shot down the memory hole.

Basically US troops showed up, told him there was a revolt going on, and he better come with them (insert weapons being cocked as a hint) and they took him off to god knows where, which mighta been the end of it had not one of those troops in severe disagreement with what was about to happen had not slipped him a cellphone*, which then forced the issue of dropping him off somewhere ALIVE, rather than out the back of that plane like they were likely planning to do.

*Smart bastard he was about it too, he called several news agencies and a couple politicians who's lines he KNEW were tapped and/or recorded.

One of them was Maxine Waters, who bent a few arms to get him dropped off somewhere safe not only from the forces of yet another US-backed coup, but also safe from US.

And most of them people want him back.
http://www.workers.org/2009/world/haiti_0326/

Given how badly we've crapped on that country, historically, had they the resources and ability, they would be another terrorist threat we'd have to defend against that was inspired by our own actions in the first damn place - and it can still happen that way.

Honestly, you don't GET more of a legit gripe against the US than Haiti has, and if you were gonna try pouring oil on those troubled waters, you NEED someone as slick, as slimy, as Bill Clinton.

If we'd have sent HIM to the UN instead of that maniac Bolton, we'd have allies instead of enemies - what kinda maroon sends a man who offends EVERYONE IN RANGE to perform diplomatic negotiations anyhow - that's one of my worst grievances against the former administration, I'll have you know...

But if you need a snake oil salesman to sleaze a diplomatic solution out of people you've fucked over really badly, hell yes, Clinton is your go-to guy.

I can't say I happen to be thrilled about it, but it IS a smart idea, mind you.

Yeah. He's being sent by the USA's UN delegate as a 'special envoy'. I hadn't read that part when I posted the other. I assumed it was HObamaman sending him, to get him out of the country for some reason, lol.

Turns out though, it's the UN that wants him out of the country. Go figure. In all seriousness, there wasn't anything in the articles I read, (3 so far ) that really said anything about what he was supposed to DO when he gets there.

The UN might want him out of the country so they can stage their own coup here. ;P

And there's always the chance they're sending him down there to do what he does - chase tail. Maybe they're hoping he'll catch something...

In all seriousness, though, the man does still have some good will in some places in the world; if he can do us some good by going there - or better still, do THEM some good by being there - then more power to him. (Of course, you realize I'm not talking about REAL power when I say that!)
