Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

This article on CNN, an interview with the Abu Ghraib base commander, is illuminating.

If Obama's policy is NOT to prosecute the torturers themselves, then he should also pardon these torturers. They were just following orders, like everyone else he's not prosecuting.

If Obama's policy is to prosecute the givers of orders, then he has memos showing who gave them, and should bring them up on charges.

If Obama wants to forget this whole mess, he can do nothing and hope that we all forget, also.

Obama has a unique opportunity to solidly define his position on these issues. Whatever he believes in, whatever his policy, he can take an action to support it.

I will wait with interest to see what happens next.

" The issue seems straightforward enough. What the CIA did to prisoners on behalf of the administration of former US President George W. Bush and its appalling legal advisers during the so-called "war on terror" was torture. And torture is a serious crime, not just in the United States, but almost everywhere else in the world. The next steps seem obvious enough: indict the guilty and send them to prison, end of story. Why, as one European legal expert put it, would anyone need to think about it for four weeks? "
