No manned spaceflight for at least 5 years, if ever.

But at least we can bomb the Middle East into the radioactive stone age. And Jr Bush bailed out Commie China's $500-billion BK in Fannie Mac.

And it's a great excuse for "Now we can't go 'back' to the Moon."

America loves a winner!

I thought Bush was out of office come next January. Can't we just un-cancel the moon landings and such? What's all this fuss over McCain and Obama then?

Hello,

Is there some reason we're not using SeaLaunch to get people into orbit as needed?

Because the Rockets aren't big enough. Certainly not for a trip to the moon.

Hello,

No, not for the Moon, but for orbit, to get to the ISS in the absence of the shuttle.

Some of the payloads they put up there are heavier than the space capsules we used to pop up into orbit in the 60's.

Hello,

We're clearly talking about different things. I'm talking about ferrying human beings to orbit without the shuttles and without buying Russian ferry boat tickets.

6,000 kg is plenty enough to get a man to the ISS.

No, we're not, I'm just not making myself clear. Though I'd note that a hell of a lot of the Zenit-3SL is actually, yanno, Russian...

Anyway the Gemini Capsule that put the first American into space weighed 3,133kg, the Apollo command module alone was 5,809 kg, and that didn't include rocket motors, propellant or life support systems (which were all carried by the service module which weighed 24,523kg) so 6000kg isn't all that much really. Taking Apollo as the example, 6000kg will get three people into orbit, which is less than crew of the spaceshuttle alone.

Yep , 'Cit' makes himself 'clear' once more...

First , the thing about the Gemini spacecraft putting the 'first' American into space...

Because , you see , the Gemini (TWINS , get it ?) was a 2-man ship that wasn't launched with a solo crewperson aboard ,
but it WAS preceded by the single-seat MERCURY spacecraft program that carried individual astronauts into suborbital and orbital trajectories...

There's a first massive misstatement of facts , but , behold , there are more...

He goes on to say that the Apollo Command Module didn't include rocket motors , propellant , or LIFE SUPPORT systems , and further goes on to elaborate that ALL THOSE were carried by the heavier Service Module...

Hmmm , imagine that , a United States spacecraft designed for an ultra-high-velocity ballistic re-entry , and those danged American engineers didn't think to include a reaction control system (rocket motors) , propellants (hypergolic fuels) , or , Life Support Systems (mixed gases , including oxygen , and an inert pressurant , helium)...(Weight budget , environmental system , 200 kilograms).

How inconvenient for the CM crewmen , then , that the Service Module was always JETTISONED prior to the re-entry (atmospheric interface) being accomplished...

What did they do then ? Hold their breath , in an out-of-control spacecraft , with no chance of modifying the trajectory
along the narrow acceptable corridor ?

Wowee , those American astronauts are even braver than we ever knew !

Thankfully , though , we don't need 'X-spurts' like Cit to design spacecraft for NASA...

See , Cit tells several danged lies in just a couple of paragraphs , while he's being critical toward someone else ; but he says he's just not being 'clear' enough for us simple folk...

Seems where he's coming from should be clear enough for most of us here...

He's not showing anyone anything new...

Go find some new stuff , Cit...

Nobody will be inclined to buy your same-old B-S...

" Planned improvements of the Zenit 3SL include a better management of propellant margins in order to increase
the payload capability to geostationary transfer orbit to about 5,500 kg by early 2002 and over 6,000 kg by late 2002.

Structural limitations of the current vehicle design are reportedly 6,200 kg for GTO and 7,000 kg for low Earth orbit. "

http://www.orbireport.com/Launchers/Zenit_3SL

AnthonyT asked a valid question...

Our local 'TianJiao' Spaceflight Expert , Citizen , gave yet another invalid and irrelevant opinion in response...

As noted above , the referenced Zenit 3SL launch vehicle can manage to loft up to 7,000 kilos to LEO ( Low Earth Orbit ).

Certainly would be enough gross spacelift capacity to put a 6,000 kg Apollo CM , or similar , into a place where it could reach the International Space Station .

But in fact , the Zenit 3SL is far from being a man-rated booster ; which is a different ballgame entirely , from flinging a comsat to a transfer orbit...

Should have saved many of those 'peace-dividend' Titan 2's for just this sort of contingency...

Ask yourself why the Service module wasn't jettisoned until just before reentry. It's because the Command Module didn't have the endurance or rocketry for Orbital manoeuvres you dumb shit. Certainly not enough to make rendezvous with a space station. If you had a brain you'd remember that when Apollo was used to dock with Skylab, it had the Service module attached, because it couldn't do it with out it. So no, the Apollo Command Module wasn't capable of Orbital manoeuvres in LEO, it was capable of falling and changing it's trajectory a bit.

The general point I was making was the the SeaLaunch platform was unsuitable for ferrying astronauts to a space station, and even if it wasn't it would be wasteful because it could never put more than three into orbit at a time. That was fine in the late sixties and early seventies, but it's not so great now. Sealaunch is wonderful for getting to Geostationary orbit (which is why I used the Geostationary payload data fucktard) but offers no real advantage to LEO, which can be reached just as easily and probably more cheaply from ground stations.

Lastly, I wasn't being 'critical' of Anthony, I was disagreeing with a statement he made. Obviously this is something you've not matured enough yet to understand, evidenced by the massive tempertantrum you've thrown across this forum because of one sentence I wrote that was critical of something you copy and pasted from elsewhere. If you're aim was to make yourself look like a colossally immature and stupid tool, bravo, mission accomplished. So how about you go back to lying and generally being a moron on your own time, because the adults are trying to have a conversation, and we don't need the preschoolers screaming and shouting while we're doing it, go to your room!
