In 1966, New Zealand radio was a government monopoly. A group of Auckalnd businessmen decided that they wanted to hear the music they liked rather than the music the government sanctioned on radio. So they launched a pirate radio station.

The law being what it is, you couldn't just broadcast, you had to have an approved frequency. To avoid prosecution, they broadcast from at sea, aboard the Tiri. They even called the station Radio Hauraki, because they were sailing in the Hauraki Gulf. Now that's what I call pirate radio.

They sailed on 10 Nov 1966 and four years later, they won!! New Zealand radio is now largely de-regulated. Hauraki are making a fuss about their 40th anniversary but I thought browncoats might share the sentiments.

Why? To be a Browncoat do you have to be anti-establishment? Does it have anything to do with ff? Shit, are all Sexpistol fans Browncoats?

They stood up for their independence.

They weren't anti-establishment simply pro-individual.

Nope but the ethos is the same.

My experience of sex pistol fans at the time, was that they were pro pissing off their parents rather than anti-establishment and all that other stuff was their vehicle - now they are just a later genration of hippies, hanging onto their "rebellion" to give them credibility while they live comfortable middle class lives running their accountancy business.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Were they pro-individual or pro-business? Is their programming now dominated by a large corporation, as it is here in the States? Do they allow dissenting voices on their show, or is this just another form of tyranny?

Reality sucks. Especially when it contradicts our cherished ideas.

Not pro-business; they went into it knowing that they would 1. probably lose money hand over fist and 2. certainly get arrested. They are far more commercial now but they are still a relatively small company, not owned by a multi-national like their main competition.

They certainly allow dissent. New Zealand media is far more free than a lot of people realise. We don't have major networks that are mouthpieces for their owners politics to the same degree as the US or UK.

Please note my qualifiers in this post.

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

Sadly, deregulation in the US has led to corporate monoliths shilling for the government on all bands, with few exceptions.

I can't think of a major network that is a mouthpeice for it's owners in the UK? There's the question of Bias on the BBC, but they're hardly the mouthpiece of the government (unless every British government likes being dragged through the mud) who do you mean?

No one can see their reflection in running water. It is only in still water that we can see.

Was thinking more of the UK tabloid press, which often have socio-political agenda.

Ahh, that's very true, I don't think of them as news or anything else, because even the people I know that read them admit that they're BS.

Comics for people to old to read comics, The Daily Dandy.
