Wow (and not in a good way)

While we have been riveted by the 2020 election, the pandemic has continued to rage out of control in parts of the US, particularly in parts of the upper Midwest and northern Mountain States.

At its peak, NY had an average daily rate of 51 infections per 100,000 people. Now, 17 States have infections rates higher than that.

The worst is North Dakota, at 174 infections per 100,000 people. By contrast, the worst country on the planet, Czechia, had 117 infections per 100,000 people at its recent peak.

In addition to North Dakota, 5 other States have infection rates equal to or surpassing that of Czechia.

ND, which currently has a 7 day average of 173.6 infections per 100,000 people, can expect a death rate of 3.75 per 100,000 people daily, very close to the death rate of 3.93 per 100,000 in NY at its peak.

There is no indication yet that ND’s infection rate has peaked. Nor, with the possible exception of South Dakota, is there any such indication for any of the other 16 States with infection rates similar to Czechia.

Sadly, it appears likely that by Thanksgiving there is going to be a full-scale emergency in parts of the upper Midwest and Mountain States similar to the one that engulfed NYC in April. And as the reality of his defeat slowly sinks in, it is highly unlikely that Donald Trump or anyone in his Administration will give a damn.

Though increased antibodies immediately after infection may temporarily help people avoid getting the virus again, research shows the protection is short-lived, a matter of a few months.

Rounding out his comments, Paul then taunted Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious-disease expert, saying, “Dr. Fauci doesn’t want to admit to any of that. South Dakota’s first-time positivity rate reaches a staggering 68%. As hospitalizations typically follow positivity rates by 2-3 wks & death rates increase 2-3 wks following that, you should be able to pick up a used Harley at a nice price for your special someone by Christmas.

The 450,000 number counts how many people are detained before their trials each year in America. However, Lieu uses it incorrectly here: included in that number are not only unconvicted inmates who are too poor to pay bail, but also unconvicted inmates who are being detained preventively and held without any bail.

Doesn't Texas have a lot of private prisons? Yanno, going through this list

and doing a back-of-the-envelope calculation, I got a total capacity of just over 22,000 in private correctional facilities.

And it looks like they weren't included, making the 80% 'unconvicted' figure completely meaningless.

It's always frustrating when a reporter can't seem to get a meaningful piece of information out. This article is like me saying "I ran for 20." 20 ... what? Leagues? Angstroms? Milliseconds? When they start out addressing "the state’s correctional facilities" it sure sounds like they mean all of them. But then they say it only addresses "state-operated prisons and county-operated jails". And that sure leaves a lot of inmates out of the picture who were convicted!
