Quote:Originally posted by second: Dr. Anthony Fauci says he would "settle" for a Covid-19 vaccine that's 70% to 75% effective, but that this incomplete protection, coupled with the fact that many Americans say they won't get a coronavirus vaccine, makes it "unlikely" that the US will achieve sufficient levels of immunity to quell the outbreak. With government support, three coronavirus vaccines are expected to be studied in large-scale clinical trials in the next three months. "The best we've ever done is measles, which is 97 to 98 percent effective," said Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. "That would be wonderful if we get there. I don't think we will. I would settle for a 70, 75% effective vaccine." A CNN poll last month found one-third of Americans said they would not try to get vaccinated against Covid, even if the vaccine is widely available and low cost. In an interview Friday, CNN asked Fauci whether a vaccine with 70% to 75% efficacy taken by only two-thirds of the population would provide herd immunity to the coronavirus. "No -- unlikely," he answered. Herd immunity is when a sufficient proportion of a population is immune to an infectious disease, either through prior illness or vaccination, so that spread from person to person unlikely. Fauci noted that "there is a general anti-science, anti-authority, anti-vaccine feeling among some people in this country -- an alarmingly large percentage of people, relatively speaking." He said given the power of the anti-vaccine movement, "we have a lot of work to do" to educate people on the truth about vaccines. "It's not going to be easy," he said. "Anyone who thinks it will be easy is not facing reality. It's going to be very difficult." www.cnn.com/2020/06/28/health/fauci-coronavirus-vaccine-contact-tracing-aspen/index.html The Interview where Fauci said it is "unlikely" that the US will achieve sufficient levels of immunity to quell the outbreak. Do Right, Be Right. :)The reason why Trump won't bother to energetically/competently handle Covid-19 is because, just like you, he keeps thinking of it as the flu, the "Kung Flu" in his not clever phrase. China, which take Covid-19 seriously, will keep its death toll lower than the Texas death toll. Texas shifts back and forth between doing nothing as Trump advises and following what epidemiologists advise: 1) As coronavirus spikes in US, China locks down 400,000 people ... over 18 cases https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/29/asia/china-coronavirus-lockdown-hebei-intl-hnk/index.html 2) What Went Wrong in Texas -- How Texas Governor Greg Abbott squandered his power to get ahead of a coronavirus outbreak. The governor invited Texans to follow their heart when it came to masks and social distancing. Their hearts led them into a COVID-19. surge. https://slate.com/podcasts/what-next/2020/06/how-texas-got-complacent-about-the-coronavirus The Joss Whedon script for Serenity, where Wash lives, is Serenity-190pages.pdf at www.mediafire.com/folder/1uwh75oa407q8/Firefly

It has been for months. I just imagine a picture of Seth Meyers saying it when I see it, because it is something that a stupid and smug person would say. I don't see what that has to do with Ted making jokes that JSF is dead. I said a while back that I was concerned about that after he dropped completely off the board without a word when the stock market crashed. Since then, Ted has brought up JSF specifically to me on no less than half a dozen times, always quipping about it. Stop being a prideful Karen and letting your imbalanced emotions cloud your brain. Quote:Originally posted by JEWELSTAITEFAN: I expect this is nothing new for her. I expect she has encouraged full Government Control at every opportunity, and every turn. More Government control. Bigger Government. Expand Government. Government good, honest working folk bad. She has been a Democrat for a very long time, been a devout follower of all required facets of the Democrat religion, and has chosen to spend her life in a Democrat hellhole. No need to ride anybody right now, this is what they have believed all of their lives. As the DNC (Does Not Care) party mantra goes, never let a good crisis go to waste - get more Government Control out of it, More Government funding, Bigger Government, more expansive Government. As for Nationalized Health Care, Universal Health Care, Government Health Care, etc - this is what the vaunted Italian system is, and they have 1/3 o the ICU beds per capita as the U.S. does. Their Death Panels are overwhelmed with decisions of who to kill and who to treat. Their individual hospitals are overwhelmed with death decisions of who to kill or let die, every floor of these hospitals is overwhelmed with who to kill, and each doctor or specialist is overwhelmed with decisions of who to kill - socialized Health Care is the Utopian model. They also mentioned that some specific hospitals in their nationalized system (like Lombardy) are even more better funded and equipped than other hospitals in the same system - where everything is equal.

Quote:Who Says It’s Not Safe to Travel to China? Sadly, one doesn’t have to look far for evidence of these top-down decisions morphing into outright racism within the general population, a trend that has a long history in the narrative of outbreaks such as this one. Coronavirus shares something in common with other kinds of civil disruption, natural disasters or emergencies that affect localized travel industries: Its destructive power lies not in the actual risk but in the perception of that risk. Numerous experts have said that the majority of people who contract coronavirus will experience it as a respiratory infection they will fully recover from. But the extreme reactions — the canceling of flights, closing of borders and level-four travel warnings — seem more appropriate for something much worse. With the rhetoric surrounding coronavirus, however, it appears the astonishing growth of the Chinese travel market in the past 15 years did little to rid the industry of the impulse to treat Chinese travelers as “others” in the face of doubt and uncertainty. Canceling flights, cruises and locking down borders when it’s not advised by international agencies will be not only an act of economic self-harm but also a wasted opportunity to learn from the mistakes of the past.
Quote: The coronavirus exposes the history of racism and “cleanliness” While the epidemic may be new, xenophobia has been intertwined with public health discourse for a very long time.
Quote:While panic about a sudden, deadly virus is to be expected, some fears — especially in North America and the West — have been based on something other than health. The panic has exposed a deep-seated xenophobia, and with it, a symptom of its own has surfaced: hostility toward East Asian people.
Quote:As the coronavirus spreads, fear is fueling racism and xenophobia
Quote:Toronto Mayor John Tory also spoke out this week about the coronavirus panic. "Standing with our Chinese community against stigmatization and discrimination," he said. "We must not allow fear to triumph over our values as a city."
Quote:‘No Chinese allowed’: Racism and fear are now spreading along with the coronavirus
Quote:An online petition signed by parents in one school district in Ontario, Canada, asked the school board to request parents whose children or whose families have recently returned from China “to stay at home and keep isolated for a minimum of 17 days for the purpose of self-quarantine.”

Do Right, Be Right. :)America’s coronavirus rate is on the rise, racing into uncharted territory even as Europe, Canada, and Japan hold new case rates to about 100 per million residents, or under. What we’re experiencing isn’t an inevitability of the disease, but a staggering failure of policy and public health compliance. But that's nothing compared with the flu, also called influenza. In the U.S. alone, the flu has already caused an estimated 26 million illnesses, 250,000 hospitalizations and 14,000 deaths this season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). www.livescience.com/new-coronavirus-compare-with-flu.html On a personal note: I have no allergies, I take no medicines, other than an annual flu shot and the two pneumonia vaccines and I have not been sick even once in the 21st Century. Quote:Originally posted by 1KIKI: No ... not really. Not anymore than N Italy, or the care homes of GB or Sweden, or the particular hard-hit regions of Spain. To show cause and effect, you need to show that deaths in nursing homes in NYC went up only AFTER COVID-19 patients were moved in, and ONLY in those nursing homes that had COIVD-19 patients. And you need to show that those patients were still positive for COVID-19. And to be really persnickety, you need to demonstrate that the particular strain of COVID-19 that killed nursing home patients AFTER new, positive-testing COVID-19 patients were moved in was identical to the strain of those new, positive-testing COVID-19 patients. What we know - or rather, what * I * know since I follow the facts - is that however named (nursing homes, care homes, long-term facilities, and just plain family residences etc), and wherever they occur on the globe - Washington State, N Italy, Sweden, or NYC - the very elderly and those with multiple medical pre-existing conditions - are most at risk of death compared to anyone else. And, btw there is no cause-and-effect. 'Nursing home' patients in NYC and coupled populations were dying on the front-lines of infection, before anyone else.
