We can rebuild our economy but we cannot bring back the millions who could die.

I choose to stay at home because it is the single most important and effective act of personal responsibility I can take to save lives, prevent suffering and contribute to our overcoming this disease as quickly as possible.

I choose to stay home to protect parents and grandparents because I respect them and value their knowledge, wisdom and perspective and because I value their lives and their humanity. I choose to stay home to protect children because COVID-19 is killing people of all ages.

I choose to stay home because I value and respect our courageous frontline nurses, hospital workers and doctors who are selflessly risking their lives and putting their own loved ones at risk every day for each one of us. They are the heroes of today’s disaster just like those who rushed into harm’s way at the World Trade Center to save others on 9/11. I choose to stay home because I understand that in doing so I am respecting, honoring and supporting them with my actions not just my words.

I choose to stay at home because I respect and value our first responders who are also very much on the front lines of this crisis. Even in normal times the vast majority of calls responded to by our firefighters are medical emergencies. Our police officers are equally at risk as they too respond to medical emergencies but also work with our homeless and incarcerated neighbors doing their best to keep these extremely vulnerable groups as safe as possible.

I choose to stay home because I know that the purported choice between public safety and the economy is a false choice. The more widespread the pandemic the deeper the lasting damage to the economy will be. The long-term impact of decimating our health care system alone is unimaginable.

I stay at home because I know that together we can rebuild our economy but we cannot bring back the millions who could die.

Amen

The people who are panicking are bankers. We can rebuild our economy, but we can do it a lot better without the speculators and debt-hawkers.

Dr Sucharit Bhakdi is a specialist in microbiology. He was a professor at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and head of the Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hygiene and one of the most cited research scientists in German history.

What he says:

We are afraid that 1 million infections with the new virus will lead to 30 deaths per day over the next 100 days. But we do not realise that 20, 30, 40 or 100 patients positive for normal coronaviruses are already dying every day.

[The government’s anti-COVID19 measures] are grotesque, absurd and very dangerous […] The life expectancy of millions is being shortened. The horrifying impact on the world economy threatens the existence of countless people. The consequences on medical care are profound. Already services to patients in need are reduced, operations cancelled, practices empty, hospital personnel dwindling. All this will impact profoundly on our whole society.

All these measures are leading to self-destruction and collective suicide based on nothing but a spook.

My comment: Services to "other" patients aren't being reduced because hospitals are empty, but because hospitals are FULL. It's a little hard to ignore the death rate in some nations, but Bhakdi seems to manage!

Politicians are being courted by scientists…scientists who want to be important to get money for their institutions. Scientists who just swim along in the mainstream and want their part of it […] And what is missing right now is a rational way of looking at things.

We should be asking questions like “How did you find out this virus was dangerous?”, “How was it before?”, “Didn’t we have the same thing last year?”, “Is it even something new?”

That’s missing.

No, it's not missing. The virus has been sequenced, we didn't have the "same thing" last year. Apparently he hasn't been keeping up with developments!

Quote:

Dr Joel Kettner s professor of Community Health Sciences and Surgery at Manitoba University ...

I have never seen anything like this, anything anywhere near like this. I’m not talking about the pandemic, because I’ve seen 30 of them, one every year. It is called influenza. And other respiratory illness viruses, we don’t always know what they are. But I’ve never seen this reaction, and I’m trying to understand why.

[…]

I worry about the message to the public, about the fear of coming into contact with people, being in the same space as people, shaking their hands, having meetings with people. I worry about many, many consequences related to that.

[…]

In Hubei, in the province of Hubei, where there has been the most cases and deaths by far, the actual number of cases reported is 1 per 1000 people and the actual rate of deaths reported is 1 per 20,000. So maybe that would help to put things into perspective.

BUT in Hubei they instituted draconian quarantine and social distancing policies, built 16 pop-up hospitals to treat the sick. The death rate was lowered because of policy, not despite it.

Patients who have been tested for SARS-CoV-2 are disproportionately those with severe symptoms and bad outcomes. As most health systems have limited testing capacity, selection bias may even worsen in the near future.

The one situation where an entire, closed population was tested was the Diamond Princess cruise ship and its quarantine passengers. The case fatality rate there was 1.0%, but this was a largely elderly population, in which the death rate from Covid-19 is much higher.

FINALLY! Something I can agree with! IF we can't have "universal" testing we at least need some random testing.

Italy is known for its enormous morbidity in respiratory problems, more than three times any other European country. In the US about 40,000 people die in a regular flu season and so far 40-50 people have died of the coronavirus, most of them in a nursing home in Kirkland, Washington.

Again, he needs to annualize the case fatality rate. How can such a smart person make such a stupid mistake?

Quote:

Dr Pietro Vernazza is a Swiss physician specialising Infectious Diseases at the Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen and Professor of Health Policy.

We have reliable figures from Italy and a work by epidemiologists, which has been published in the renowned science journal ‹Science›, which examined the spread in China. This makes it clear that around 85 percent of all infections have occurred without anyone noticing the infection. 90 percent of the deceased patients are verifiably over 70 years old, 50 percent over 80 years.

I have not seen ANY such studies. One published by China indicated that roughly 30% of the infected population was asymptomatic. not "85%". So ... Stop the handwaving. CITES AND LINKS, PLEASE.

I’m not a fan of lockdown. Anyone who imposes something like this must also say when and how to pick it up again. Since we have to assume that the virus will be with us for a long time, I wonder when we will return to normal? You can’t keep schools and daycare centers closed until the end of the year. Because it will take at least that long until we have a vaccine. Italy has imposed a lockdown and has the opposite effect. They quickly reached their capacity limits, but did not slow down the virus spread within the lockdown.

Not true. The death rate in Italy is finally beginning to heel over, thanks to lockdowns.

Quote:

Prof. Hendrik Streeck is a German HIV researcher, epidemiologist and clinical trialist...

The new pathogen is not that dangerous, it is even less dangerous than Sars-1. The special thing is that Sars-CoV-2 replicates in the upper throat area and is therefore much more infectious because the virus jumps from throat to throat, so to speak. But that is also an advantage: Because Sars-1 replicates in the deep lungs, it is not so infectious, but it definitely gets on the lungs, which makes it more dangerous.

Hello? Respiratory failure being the primary mode of death?

Quote:

Dr Yanis Roussel et. al. – A team of researchers from the Institut Hospitalo-universitaire Méditerranée Infection, Marseille and the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement ...

The problem of SARS-CoV-2 is probably overestimated, as 2.6 million people die of respiratory infections each year compared with less than 4000 deaths for SARS-CoV-2 at the time of writing.

Again, they're comparing annualized deaths to deaths expanding exponentially and only over a three-month period.

Quote:

Dr. David Katz is an American physician and founding director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center

What he says:

I am deeply concerned that the social, economic and public health consequences of this near-total meltdown of normal life — schools and businesses closed, gatherings banned — will be long-lasting and calamitous, possibly graver than the direct toll of the virus itself. The stock market will bounce back in time, but many businesses never will. The unemployment, impoverishment and despair likely to result will be public health scourges of the first order.

No, I had SPECIFIC refutations for most. For example, comparing to-date deaths against annualized numbers of other illnesses? Ignoring REAL LIFE national examples of overwhelmed healthcare systems and high fatality rates? Seriously???

If you have a SPECIFIC argument for, or against, various statements please bring them to the board and stop posting about freedom being sacrosanct when clearly, it isn't.

And, no, I didn't waste my time watching a stupid video about stupid people doing stupid things that proves nothing except that some people are sometimes really stupid.

Why America Can't Respond to the Current Crisis

As the coronavirus outbreak in the US follows the same grim exponential growth path first displayed in Wuhan, China, before herculean measures were put in place to slow its spread there, America is waking up to the fact that it has almost no public capacity to deal with it.

Instead of a public health system, we have a private for-profit system for individuals lucky enough to afford it and a rickety social insurance system for people fortunate enough to have a full-time job.

At their best, both systems respond to the needs of individuals rather than the needs of the public as a whole. In America, the word “public” – as in public health, public education or public welfare – means a sum total of individual needs, not the common good.

Contrast this with America’s financial system. The Federal Reserve concerns itself with the health of financial markets as a whole. Late last week the Fed made $1.5 trillion available to banks at the slightest hint of difficulties making trades. No one batted an eye.

When it comes to the health of the nation as a whole, money like this isn’t available. And there are no institutions analogous to the Fed with responsibility for overseeing and managing the public’s health – able to whip out a giant checkbook at a moment’s notice to prevent human, rather than financial, devastation.

There is no public health system in the US, in short, because the richest nation in the world has no capacity to protect the public as a whole, apart from national defense.

Sounds great. Where do you begin?

Health insurance is a Ponzi Scheme that's been at work for decades artificially inflating the cost of medical care at ten times the rate of inflation to the point that nobody can get any help without it anymore.

Do you even have any idea how much money has gone to pay lawyers, prop up court systems and was given to people over frivolous lawsuits for longer than I've lived?

You might notice the same thing happening right now to your homeowners insurance prices. All of those "ambulance chasers" that call themselves roof repair companies. Those roofs don't get replaced for free. Needless roof repairs is the number one reason that homeowners insurance increases every year. Sometime in our lives, it's very likely that most people won't be able to afford it anymore.

Sure... having a place to live isn't important if you're unhealthy and are about to die because you don't have health insurance, but put a pin in that and tell that to the millions of people who will be destroyed in about 20 years who lost their homes in a tornado or a flood after having paid for homeowners insurance their whole lives and cancelled it the year before because they decided food on the table was more important.

I don't argue with your sentiment, bud. Especially if you don't want to see the Government control it anymore than I do.

I just don't have a clue how you would even begin to fix that problem. Like any other bubble we've suffered through popping in the last few decades, it went ignored for far too long.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

And the only people who believe the "Affordable" part of that name are on the same level of intelligence who believed the "Patriot" part of the Patriot Act.

Cool. Tell your grandkids that when their house burns down and they're out on the street because they couldn't afford their homeowner's insurance because millions of Americans spent decades getting unnecessary roof repairs and put the premiums out of their ability to pay them.

Well, if that's the natural outcome of the American way of doing business, you shouldn't have a problem with it. Because you support all private enterprise, and nothing government run.

Scientific American explained why you are a nihilist.

New research contrasts two very different profiles of human nature:

1) “I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.” – Anne Frank

2) “What’s one less person on the face of the earth, anyway?” – Ted Bundy (and 6ixStringJack)

https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/beautiful-minds/the-light-triad-v
s-dark-triad-of-personality

The dark triad of personality consists of:
1. narcissism (entitled self-importance)
2. Machiavellianism (strategic exploitation and deceit)
3. psychopathy (callousness and cynicism)

There is enough overlap among these three "socially aversive" traits that Paulhus has argued that they "should be studied in concert." Indeed, there does appear to be a "dark core" to personality.

Yup. Because to a simple mind like Second's there are only two personality traits, the world is completely black and white and you are either one or the other.

I'm sure the guy who has advocated that everyone murder their boss and steal everything they own as well as call for the assassination of the President (I'm talking about you Second) is NOT the Anne Frank personality.

No. That's not what he meant, but I had to read it a few times myself to catch what he was throwing there because it's so poorly worded. Once again, in is binary little world, he is making the equation that SIX = Ted Bundy = US Officers in Vietnam he had to answer to, while Second = Anne Frank.

Nuance isn't lost on me. I'm completely able to see all the shades of grey and I don't live in a binary world of black and white.

You'll never once hear me say that I'm Anne Frank. You can go back 14 years in posts here and not only will you never hear me make that claim or anything remotely similar to it, but you'll find mountains of evidence to the contrary. I'm no angel.

But my point is that Second's posts this morning calling me Ted Bundy make the highly delusional implication that he, himself, is Anne Frank.

Sure. I recognize that in Second's binary world of only the two choices of Ted Bundy and Anne Frank, I am Ted Bundy. I'm simply pointing out that in his completely imaginary and hilariously over-simplified world view that he is as well.

The society is unarguably the omnibus of good and evil unparalleled forces. No segment of the society irrespective of its nomenclature, religious or cultural affiliation can presently or will ever claim monopoly of transacting only good or evil. Nature naturally permits dual operation of the two realities; they co-exist, merge, blend, cyclical in succession and never mutually exclusive in any single known entity. Every living individual is a bundle of the two forces, choked by both but with the impelled choice to decide depending on circumstances and self-willed on which force to adhere to.

It is a display of social, spiritual and political ignorant for anyone to continue to identify a particular religion, race, class, ethnicity or even political party as completely evil or completely good. It only appears safer to conclude that a man or group of men are either less evil or less good, and as indicated previously, in as much as there is no known purely good or purely bad men, there is equally no known or established strictly conglomeration of evil or good men. A group only appears good when circumstantially or momentarily, majority of the members, attendees are less evil inclined or in action, and accordingly tagged evil when majority are less good. Less evil obviously does not signify absent of evil or absolute goodness, neither does less good denotes absent of good but just perceived domination of a particular trait by most of the people which deceptively form a canopy for the group.

In other words...

Anne Frank was no Anne Frank either.

Let us see if 6ix can be haughty and display his superiority complex ("an attitude of superiority which conceals actual feelings of inferiority and failure") about this comparison:

Why virus denial resembles climate denial.

Let me summarize the Trump administration/right-wing media view on the coronavirus: It’s a hoax, or anyway no big deal. Besides, trying to do anything about it would destroy the economy. And it’s China’s fault, which is why we should call it the “Chinese virus.”

Oh, and epidemiologists who have been modeling the virus’s future spread have come under sustained attack, accused of being part of a “deep state” plot against Donald Trump, or maybe free markets.

Does all this give you a sense of déjà vu? It should. After all, it’s very similar to the Trump/right-wing line on climate change. Here’s what Trump tweeted back in 2012: “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing noncompetitive.” It’s all there: it’s a hoax, doing anything about it will destroy the economy, and let’s blame China.

And epidemiologists startled to find their best scientific efforts denounced as politically motivated fraud should have known what was coming. After all, exactly the same thing happened to climate scientists, who have faced constant harassment for decades.

So the right-wing response to Covid-19 has been almost identical to the right-wing response to climate change, albeit on a vastly accelerated time scale. But what lies behind this kind of denialism?

Climate denial is supported almost entirely by fossil-fuel interests. As Upton Sinclair put it, “It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it.” It’s less obvious who gains from minimizing the dangers of a pandemic. Among other things, the time scale is vastly compressed compared with climate change: the consequences of global warming will take many decades to play out, giving fossil-fuel interests plenty of time to take the money and run, but we’re already seeing catastrophic consequences of virus denial after just a few weeks.

But I suspect that the disastrous response to Covid-19 has been shaped less by direct self-interest than by two indirect ways.

First, when you have a political movement almost entirely built around assertions than any expert can tell you are false, you have to cultivate an attitude of disdain toward expertise, one that spills over into everything. Once you dismiss people who look at evidence on the effects of greenhouse gas emissions, you’re already primed to dismiss people who look at evidence on disease transmission.

Second, conservatives do hold one true belief: namely, that there is a kind of halo effect around successful government policies. If public intervention can be effective in one area, they fear — probably rightly — that voters might look more favorably on government intervention in other areas. In principle, public health measures to limit the spread of coronavirus needn’t have much implication for the future of social programs like Medicaid. In practice, the first tends to increase support for the second.

As a result, the right often opposes government interventions even when they clearly serve the public good and have nothing to do with redistributing income, simply because they don’t want voters to see government doing anything well.

The bottom line is that as with so many things Trump, the awfulness of the man in the White House isn’t the whole story behind terrible policy. Yes, he’s ignorant, incompetent, vindictive and utterly lacking in empathy. But his failures on pandemic policy owe as much to the nature of the movement he serves as they do to his personal inadequacies.

So the right-wing response to Covid-19 has been almost identical to the right-wing response to climate change, albeit on a vastly accelerated time scale. But what lies behind this kind of denialism?

Trump’s Coronavirus Talk Sounds a Lot Like Russia’s

"Now back at the Brookings Institution and an expert on Russian disinformation, she talked to The Daily Beast about how Russia and China are exploiting the coronavirus pandemic. She (Fiona Hill) began by noting, “The way the president refers to the ‘Chinese virus’ is not helpful. It’s a way of deflecting responsibility for the outcome, and that’s exactly what the Chinese and Russians are doing themselves.”

China’s goal is to head off a huge public backlash in which countries might even try to sue China for reparations. “The Chinese bear a great deal of responsibility for covering up and trying to deny the early outbreak,” she said. “China should be the skunk at everybody’s party. They don’t want to take responsibility for letting a localized virus become a global pandemic. And now with the United States in a prostrate position, they can step in and take on a leader’s role.”

Turning to Russia, Hill said its behavior fits into a longstanding pattern that began with the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. Back then, the KGB launched a fairly successful covert disinformation campaign dubbed “Operation Infektion” to convince people that the virus was really a U.S. biological weapon. That was easy for people to believe because they knew governments experimented on vulnerable people.

“We’ve been in this space a long time where there is a lot of misinformation that takes on a life of its own, and governments use it for propaganda purposes, to deflect from their own shortcomings, and to mobilize the population against an external enemy,” said Hill.

“We’ve been in this space a long time where there is a lot of misinformation that takes on a life of its own, and governments use it for propaganda purposes.”

“We continue to see accounts aligned with Russian State media work to sow discord in the United States by amplifying divisive content,” explains Daniel J. Jones, founder of the non-profit public investigations group, Advance Democracy, Inc. (ADI). “We typically track these efforts to exacerbate tensions in the context of elections, but we’re now seeing these accounts amplify divisive content relating to the COVID-19 global pandemic, to include offensive content relating to race.”

Jones pointed to how Russia’s English-language state-media outlets have played up both sides of the debate over whether to label the coronavirus by its official name, COVID-19, or the racially charged “Wuhan virus” preferred by the Trump administration. State-backed TV channel RT has blown off criticism of the “Wuhan virus”-style branding and wondered aloud whether the debate is “just media-manufactured outrage?” while the Russia-funded In the Now outlet highlighted the racist attacks on those of Asian descent that have taken place since the outbreak.

The European Union’s strategic communications division, which monitors Russian and other disinformation narratives, released a report in mid-March that found Kremlin propaganda was identifying and amplifying coronavirus concerns in order to “to sow distrust and division.” The EU report claimed that, rather than invest in new propaganda narratives, much of Russia’s recent disinformation on COVID-19 was “simply amplifying theories that originate elsewhere, e.g. in China, Iran or the US far right.”

As tensions with the U.S. reached a peak, Chinese diplomats waged a disinformation campaign that exploited a long-running theme in American conspiracy media focused on Fort Detrick, the former home of the U.S. Army’s long-shuttered biological-weapons program.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lijian Zhao led the charge on Twitter with a link to an article written by a Canadian conspiracy theorist that blamed Fort Detrick for the virus, an idea that’s long circulated in domestic conspiracy circles. In 2009, Infowars correspondent Paul Joseph Watson wrote a post for Global Research—the same conspiracy outlet Lijian linked to—falsely claiming that the swine flu pandemic may have originated with a pathogen from Fort Detrick.

Hill recounted her personal experience when she was one of the first people forcefully restrained at a Russian airport in September 1987, when the government decided while her student group was midair that HIV was a contagious disease and everybody entering the country had to be tested.

The group of two dozen students spent a nervous 48 hours in the airport and were then quarantined in their dorm rooms until they got the results. Russia at the time was jailing people who spread STDs, so there was some genuine nervousness about how HIV spread, and about these possibly promiscuous students coming for a year, Hill recalled with some amusement, but as CNN and the BBC covered the standoff, “it was also to show that a capitalist country was the source of this new scourge.”

In 2016, Russia sowed confusion and chaos, said Hill, chiefly through social media. “They wanted Hillary grievously injured if she won. They didn’t expect Trump to win, but the fact that he won under a massive cloud, it’s a perfect outcome.”

The uproar over Russia’s involvement undermined Trump’s legitimacy as a leader, which served Russia’s interests, as did Trump’s denigration of NATO.

“Their goal has been to neutralize the U.S. and keep it out of the international arena as much as possible. The idea that the U.S. has lost leadership is deeply satisfying to Russia,” said Hill, author of the 2015 book, Mr. Putin: Operative in the Kremlin.

“2016 was about discrediting U.S. leadership,” she said. In the 2018 midterm elections, the hacking of systems wasn’t particularly significant. Rather, “it’s the hacking of our minds that is the problem.”

She continued, “There is so much domestic disinformation tied to our own politics that the Russians don’t have to do much of anything to capitalize on what they already did in 2016. It’s basically a force multiplier for them. They don’t have to do anything on the scale of 2016.”

She recalled the disbelief after Trump won the election that the Russians had been so effective using social media. “It was low-cost interference with a high payback. All they did is amplify our own discord. They were just sending it around retweeting—we all know that now—they just circulated around this disinformation to all kinds of groups.”

It was information warfare, Hill said, geared to divide Americans and to break the resolve of government. “The Russians still see us as a threat,” she added, while Russia is seen by Trump “as a tool wielded by Democrats against the president.”

Because the Mueller investigation into Russian meddling in the election was tied to his legitimacy, Trump was hostile to it, said Hill, and because so many people couldn’t believe he would win with such a small margin, he immediately attacked the premise of the investigation.

It should have been framed differently, she said, around the question of “What did the Russians do?” not “What did Trump do?”

“I think we would have ended up in the same place” with Paul Manafort, Trump’s campaign manager, indicted, along with a number of Russian individuals, she said, “but it would have had more credibility.”

Russia is not going to be immune to the virus. Reports show the number of cases climbing and after initially saying the virus was “under control,” Putin canceled all incoming international flights except those with returning Russians, and declared next week a stay-at-home holiday.

“But they’re still geared up to push back on the U.S.,” said Hill, who urges a more rational discussion than what we got during the impeachment process when in her view partisanship furthered the tendency to make Ukraine the issue, undermining the whole idea that there was collusion between the campaign and Russia. “We should be pulling together instead of attacking Ukraine,” she said with some exasperation.

>>>As for Russia’s plans for the 2020 election, Hill said: “I expect them to keep on doing what they already do because it’s proving successful for them. It’s also possible they will hack and dump—like they did with the DNC emails in 2016 and the releases to WikiLeaks. But the most effective approach is simply mining and amplifying all the disinformation that’s already out there in the U.S. political arena, or things like looking for rifts between Biden and Bernie Sanders, any grievance or discord we have that they can exploit. There’s so much potential material out there for them to use. Social media has proved extraordinarily useful—Facebook, YouTube, Twitter all have to police what they’re doing. This is not something that can be tackled on the government level.”<<<

Your poorly programmed NPC brain is only capable of Binary. Ones and Zeros.

I'll state it again because you're stupid. You are Ted Bundy in an either/or situation.

'Cause let me tell ya... You are no Anne Frank, buddy.

You've told us what you feel about Covid-19. What are your feelings on climate change? Is it no big deal, can't do anything about it anyway, shutting down coal will kill industry in Indiana?

You mean the "conversation" where you're threatening people with jail for what they wrote about you? You're getting more like Trump everyday. I look forward to you calling the police and that November election. I really want to know if 6ix can get his "enemies" jailed and how many people approve of the job Trump is doing. Will they have forgotten he ran his mouth for months about Covid-19 being nothing and will they fondly remember his sales and marketing tactics and his self-help tips from The Power of Positive Thinking?

Nope. The I'm referring to the conversation that we were having before T came in and told me to kill myself.

Either go back to that conversation, or fuck right off with your simple-minded bullshit.

It might be as historic as Herbert Hoover vs FDR in 1932 with FDR being steadily smarter than Hoover. Or it might be Bush vs John Kerry in 2004 where an incompetent President was reelected. It was pretty obvious that Bush would get stupider the longer he ruled. Remember second term Hurricane Katrina and the Iraq Insurgency and the Financial Crisis of 2007–08? Trump will get stupider the longer he rules, same as Bush did.
