I keep hearing from alot of places rumours of there being a new film, a sequel to Serenity. Thing is it don't seem very clear whether it is actually happening or not so i was wonderin if someone would please straighten this out for me. Is there going to be a new film or isn't there?

As far as my memory serves, there is currently no sequel to Serenity in production. All of the actors (with the possible exception of Ron Glass and Alan Tudyk) were signed for a 3 movie deal, but this is (apparently) a standard agreement. Universal have the rights to produce 3 movies, but that is no guarantee that they will. I believe that the contractual obligation for the actors finishes towards the end of this year, which would mean that, if there were to be a sequel after then, there would need to be new contract negotiations.

Joss Whedon would dearly love to make new Firefly/Serenity material, he has stated that again and again. He was very busy with Wonder Woman, but that's been taken from him too :( But in theory he could be free (or at least, freer than he was) to write a sequel.

So - it's a possibility. But not yet a probability. Keep buying merchandise, and don't let Universal think that this is going away.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Alan and Ron were also signed for three movies; just want to clear that one up. Doesn't mean they'll be in three movies, but maybe there will be flashbacks (or prequels)
According to an interview I read with Sean on brilliantbutcancelled.com, the contracts are up in September of this year. This might not seem very hopeful, but there are three reasons I still hope:
1) Joss has said he would release the history of Book and Inara if there were definitely going to be no new films. As he hasn't done this, the possibility is still there.
2) Things in the film industry tend to be pretty hush-hush. Odds are we won't know about a movie until they're already shooting.
3) I have to.

Sorry it can't be more clear-cut than that, but unfortunately the world just isn't clear cut.

I'm a Browncoat. I hold the line even after I've been told to surrender. That's all there is to it.

Also another thing. Joss is writing a comic series Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8. Should be out soon. Dark Horse thinks they will sell 100,000 copies of issue 1.

See http://whedonesque.com/comments/12565
Buffy #1 poised to be a huge seller.

Joss is writing a comic mini-series Serenity: Better Days. 3 issue probably. Set in the timeline of the TV series.

This means to me that Joss thinks there is no possibility of Buffy coming back for Season 8.

But he is holding on Firefly/Serenity and giving us a little bit to make us happy.

He already wrote Serenity: Those Left Behind comics set between the TV series and the movie. 3 issues 9 covers. Available as a Graphic novel now with all 9 covers inside.

Lets all hope and pray that Mr. Fillion becomes a huge star with Drive and or waitress then the studios will have more reason to sink the money into another Serenity flick (rising star = dollars at the box office)

This is the exact reason I wished massive success for Joss & Wonder Woman.
