Rep. Adam Schiff Speech on House Floor in Response to MAGA-Backed Censure

To my Republican colleagues who introduced this resolution, I thank you. You honor me with your enmity.

You flatter me with this falsehood. You, who are the authors of a big lie about the last election, must condemn the truth tellers, and I stand proudly before you.

Donald Trump is under indictment for actions that jeopardize our national security, and McCarthy would spend the nation’s time on petty political payback, thinking he can censure or fine Trump’s opposition into submission.

ech-on-house-floor-in-response-to-maga-backed-censure

The question, my Republican colleagues, is not why am I the subject of this false resolution for doing my constitutional duty, but why are you not? Why are you not standing beside me, the subject of a similar rebuke for speaking the truth?

Why did you not stand up to Donald Trump, why did you not reject his immorality, why did you not condemn his dishonesty, why did you not speak out when his horde attacked this Capitol, or now, when he treats the nation’s secrets with such carelessness, lawlessness and disdain, why did you hide from efforts to hold him accountable, why were you silent, afraid, unwilling to do your ethical, constitutional duty, why did you cower, why did you cower — and why do you still?

Will it be said of you that you lacked the courage to stand up to the most immoral, unlawful and unethical president in history, but consoled yourselves by attacking those who did?

Today, I wear this partisan vote as a badge of honor. Knowing that I have lived my oath.

Adam Schiff is being rhetorical but I could tell him why. The Trump voters I know were untrustworthy lying sacks of shit before Trump entered politics. That is why Trump voters are now acting as they do. It is perfectly characteristic of their lives. Too bad for the angry white trash who loves Trump but your rotten behavior has and will continue to have rotten consequences for you.

The indictments are making Trump stronger in the Republican nomination fight while he’s taking on more baggage for a general election.

The conventional wisdom is that Donald Trump’s interview with Bret Baier of Fox News on Monday night was a disaster for the former president.

This is a reasonable view, assuming, that is, you believe that it’s a bad thing that he talked about having boxes with his clothes mixed in with classified documents, maintained he didn’t have time to comply with federal demands for the return of documents, and stated baldly, once again, that he won the 2020 election.

But what many Republicans likely saw and heard was a man beset by a two-tiered justice system fighting back spiritedly against unfair charges, and a former president who still fills the screen and never loses his sense of command.

It’s pretty typical that partisans regard their leaders differently than the rest of the public, but the divide between GOP opinion of Trump and the way the middle of the electorate regards him is deep and abiding.

The indictments of Trump are making him stronger in the Republican nomination fight — generating GOP sympathy and making him the center of attention — while he’s taking on more baggage for a prospective general election. This push-and-pull, yin-and-yang dynamic, with Republicans growing more attached to a candidate harder to elect, may yet prove decisive in both contests.

It’s not unusual that, in the course of winning a nomination, politicians create electoral vulnerabilities for themselves by moving too far right or left. Hence, the conventional trajectory of a nominee trying to readjust by coming back to the center in a general.

This is different. What adjustments can Trump make? He can’t get un-indicted for the general election, or jettison his claims about the 2020 election, or reverse all the water that passed under the bridge since 2015. He’s not going to become more polite or give up ALL CAPS TRUTH SOCIAL POSTS.

What Republicans find alluring about Trump is, with some exceptions, what the rest of the electorate finds noxious, and vice versa.

It’s not so much Trump’s positions as his persona — in other words, the GOP isn’t potentially taking an electoral risk to advance an ideological goal or a set of policies, but to associate itself with a political figure it likes and almost no one else does.

Republicans view Trump as a victim, the broader electorate a malefactor; GOP voters find him charming and entertaining, other voters needlessly insulting and controversial; for Republicans, he’s a bold truth-teller, for everyone else, he’s not trustworthy.

This doesn’t mean that Trump can’t win a general, only that there’s a built-in resistance to his candidacy that it will require considerable luck to overcome.

Several times in recent weeks, Donald Trump has said that, if he were elected president again, he would end the Russia–Ukraine war “in one day.” He even claimed in one interview: “That deal would be easy.”

It’s worth noting that he has long believed that international diplomacy is easy and that the failure of many past presidents to strike good deals shows only that they’ve all been (as he once put it) “very, very stupid” and that he “alone” has the right kind of smarts to fix the mess.

He still believes in his unique talents as a deal-maker — after his bargaining tactics with China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran accomplished nothing or worse.

There is nothing new in this. Back in 1988, when George H.W. Bush became president, Trump lobbied to become his arms-control negotiator. He had recently authored a bestselling book, The Art of the Deal, and, though it was entirely ghostwritten and largely embellished, he figured that should give him street cred in the highest realms of deal-making. Bush’s aides laughed off his illusions and instead appointed Richard Burt, a real and seasoned diplomat.

Burt later told Politico an enlightening story about Trump’s notion of tough negotiations. Around 1990, when Burt was beginning a new round of Soviet–American nuclear arms talks, he ran into Trump at a reception in New York. Trump expressed envy of Burt’s position and asked if he’d like some advice on how to cut a “terrific” deal. Burt suppressed a chuckle and said, “Sure.” Trump told him this: Arrive late at the next negotiating session, walk over to where your counterpart sits impatiently, look down at him, poke your finger in his chest, and scream, “Fuck you!”

Needless to say, Burt ignored Trump’s advice, yet nonetheless managed in the course of a year to negotiate the START treaty, which ordered major reductions in both sides’ nuclear arsenals.

Most mortals, following the news, would think to themselves, “Hmm, maybe I don’t know everything there is to know about this subject.” But Trump, upon entering the White House 15 years after the encounter, proclaimed that he knew “far more about foreign policy” than his predecessor and (referring to the leading Islamist terrorist group of the time) “more about ISIS than the generals.”

Quite possibly, he really believed that. Throughout his presidency, as well as before and after, he exhibited a particularly dangerous quality: He knows very little but thinks he knows a lot.

That's only because the people of China, Russia, North Korea and Iran were witness to the American government being just as corrupt as their own government and installing puppet President* Joe Biden* and ending Trump's administration through en masse mail-in fraud ballots and ballot harvesting, thus re-installing a pro-war-machine regime that enjoys painting their countries as comic book supervillains who are pure evil in order to get the dumb American public to support the never-ending wars.

They also witnessed the entire Democrat party switch from an anti-war to a pro-war stance in the course of half a single presidency term, putting on full display just how powerful the American Media is and how easily propagandized the American people are.

All you're doing right now Second is supporting GWB 2.0. The only "upgrade" he got was a blue tie for his $10,000 suits.

MAGA Republicans want you to believe this is a test of President Biden, Attorney General Merrick Garland — even the Department of Justice. That doesn’t mean the rest of us have to repeat that nonsense.

No. The only person who is about to be on trial is Donald J. Trump, and the test of democracy is whether or not the United States can prosecute, even convict and jail, a former leader without everyone losing their minds. Like the rest of the world does all the time, without incident.

At least 78 countries around the world have prosecuted or jailed former leaders just since the start of this century.

I repeat: At least 78 countries around the world have prosecuted or jailed former leaders just since the start of this century. That includes leaders from democracies and allies of ours, such as France, Italy, South Korea, and Israel, where the current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in the middle of his own ongoing corruption trial. A reminder that in other countries even sitting leaders can face justice.

So this notion that the prosecution of a former American president is somehow a corrupt and partisan attack on the “political opposition,” or a sign of democratic dysfunction, is just absurd. All across the world, democracies hold their current and former leaders to account for their crimes.

Former leaders have been jailed or charged all over the world

This federal case is about national security, not just “documents.”

Trump took home nuclear secrets and war plans. He kept them in his resort home, and, according to the indictment, showed them off on two occasions. People have gone to prison for much less than that. Calling that a “documents case” is trivializing it. It’s like reducing Watergate to just a simple office burglary. Trump is accused of stealing some of the most sensitive secrets America has, so this case is about the direct danger his actions put everyone in.

What? Trump could have avoided all the legal drama by returning the top secrets but, no, he couldn't do that simple thing. Instead, he lied his head off that he didn't have top secrets, that he had declassified top secrets, and that top secrets were his personal property. Then he made the biggest mistake of all, boldly lying to the FBI as Trump's manservant loaded boxes full of top secrets onto an airplane flying from Mar-A-Lago to Trump National Golf Club Bedminster. Trump is a wackadoodle.
