I thought this might be interesting for you all. It didn't reasonate as much with me because none of those hot topics are in my lexicon of core beliefs, but I get the gist and it makes sense.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Nice to see you back, MAGONS!

What proof did he offer that George Washington's teeth weren't wooden?

And no. I won't be sticking around to the end. Lose the smug in your voice, or have somebody else do the readings for you who can, mkay.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

One thing I know is that I'm extremely susceptible to new information, with evidence, and a logic that makes good sense of all of it. To me there is nothing more addictive than an AHA!! moment.

That's why I've enjoyed knowing extremely smart people (even the guy who eventually killed himself). That's why I enjoyed university and all its diverse people, and the places where I've worked with so many diverse and intelligent people in one place.

And those AHA!! moments of new information and new insights made my world so much bigger and more interesting, even if sometimes uncomfortable.

But it looks like other people don't share that appreciation.

I consider the source before I open myself to any new information.

Mags is a retard. She always was a retard.

I have no inclination to look at anything she shares other than for a laugh, and I couldn't even get that satisfaction here because I couldn't listen to more than 2 minutes of that smug cunty voice on the video.

Didn't believe the story about wooden teeth, nor the one about mixed animal teeth either, and not the one about slaves teeth.

What evidence was there for any of the that, other than someone's say so?

But I get the point about defending core beliefs. I have a tendency to be very certain about some things, and certainty can get in the way of learning, because learning quite often means changing your mind.

I agree with KIKI: there is nothing quite like the jolt that you get when zapped with new understanding. Unfortunately for me, it happens too rarely. I'm trying to be more open-minded.

I agree with you about 'belief' Signy. Being sold a new belief in place of an old belief is a pretty pointless exercise.

I too have core beliefs as well. So when I discuss things irl, I try to put them out there, as I understand them to be, for testing and mutual communication. And if someone finds my core beliefs to be faulty and can explain to me how they're faulty - with evidenced facts and logic - I certainly try to at least make room for more thought.

For me, many times an AHA! moment is more like tectonic creep rather than an earthquake. Bit by bit my mind is changed over time.

FWIW I have a really poor memory of how I used to be and what I used to think. I FEEL like the same person, but I suspect I'm not. At least I HOPE I'm not! It'd be really unfortunate if after all these years I was still stuck in the same place.

You're talking to a guy who doesn't even know if he believes that George Washington was even real anymore.

"What would you do if I told you George Washington didn't have wooden teeth?"

I certainly haven't had my mind blown, my dude.

What would you do if I told you that everything you've ever been told by anybody in your entire life has just about as much of a chance of being true as being a lie?

I'm not even insinuating that it's all malicious. Most of it is wrong simply because it was misremembered, lost in translation or just a complete harmless fabrication that somehow became "truth" over the years.

I'll bet there are 20 year olds today that think the events of Inglorious Basterds actually happened in real life.

Well that explains a lot.

As does this.

No wonder it takes you so long to absorb sense. And then promptly forget just how delusional you have been.

And this above about the level of mass psychosis currently happening throughout the western world - not able to tell fact from fiction, not able to believe scientific evidence. You are being set up for the return of the despot to make you
'free' again
