Republicans win Governor, Lt. Governor and Attorney General and flip the House of Delegates red.

New Lt. Governor Sears is of Cuban desent.

New Attorney General Miyares is the first black woman to hold the position.

NEW JERSEY:

With 88% of the votes counted, Jack Ciattarelli (R) leads Phil Murphy (D) by less than 1,200 votes. Mail-in fraud ballots are reported to be "slow to be counted" so that one is going to go to Murphy. But it's shockingly close considering the polling aggregate on RCP was showing Murphy with a 7.8 lead going into election day.

Four of seven seats on the Douglas County School Board are open on election night, which means more than half of the board could be replaced.

Johnson County school board election results: Conservatives prevail in several races

Conservative newcomers won most of the school board races in Blue Valley and swept the Olathe races — but were defeated in Shawnee Mission — with all precincts reporting Tuesday.

The school board races were the most controversial in Johnson County this fall, after months of battles over school district COVID-19 rules, as well as diversity initiatives. Several conservative candidates ran in the nonpartisan races for the first time, fighting for what they call “parent choice,” opposing mask mandates and questioning how schools teach students about racism, sexual orientation and gender.

Republican Glenn Youngkin defeated Democrat Terry McAuliffe on Tuesday. This now makes it 11 out of the last 12 governor’s races in Virginia that the party not controlling the White House has won. The lone exception was McAuliffe in 2013, winning with 47.8% of the vote. In 2021, McAuliffe lost with 48.6%. https://ballotpedia.org/Glenn_Youngkin

The out-party traditionally wins the Virginia gubernatorial race.

This pattern is not a coincidence. One year after an election, the base voters of the party that just lost a presidential race are going to be pissed off and wake up each morning dreaming of the next time they can vote against the president’s party. The president’s party’s base, meanwhile, can’t match that level of enthusiasm. The president, whom everyone was so excited to elect the previous year, takes ownership of national problems and sags, or plummets, from their postelection high. This is also the basic structure of why the president’s party typically loses ground in midterm elections the following year.

Washington didn’t give McAuliffe much material to work with. As I write, we are on month… 3… 4… 7?… of congressional Democrats saying they’ll pass a monumental pair of bills any day now. This week? Eh, might have to push it to next week. How does your December look? This meant McAuliffe had little to nothing to point toward as examples of what Democrats can get done if you just give them the chance.

Texas Will Allow Voters to Fix Erroneous Mail-In Ballots

Approximately 1 million Texans submitted their ballots by mail for the 2020 presidential election and about 8,000 of those were discounted for administrative errors. Now the state will allow voters to fix errors and track ballots online.

(TNS) — More than half a million Americans who voted by mail in 2020 had their ballots thrown out and never counted, mostly because of easy-to-fix mistakes. And in most states — including in Texas — voters never knew their ballots were rejected until it was too late to do anything about it.

But that changes in Texas on Thursday when new election laws go into effect that will require county officials to attempt to reach voters before their ballots are disqualified and give them a chance to fix them. In addition, voters will be able to track the status of their mail ballots online, so they can spot any problems early.

"It's a big win for people who vote by mail in Texas," said Remi Garza, the elections administrator for Cameron County and president of the Texas Association of Elections Administrators.

Nearly 1 million Texans voted by absentee ballot during the 2020 presidential election, a record. About 8,000 of those ballots ended up not being counted because of miscues such as signatures that were missing or did not appear to match, or voters failing to sign the outside of the envelope when they sent it in.

Nationwide, 560,000 absentee ballots — almost 1 percent — were rejected during the 2020 presidential election, according to a report from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. Almost 70 million Americans voted by mail during the election. That report showed that while Texas had 0.8 percent of its mail ballots tossed, states with a provision to allow voters to fix common mistakes had far fewer ballots rejected. For instance, in Florida and Arizona, just 0.3 percent of absentee ballots were disqualified.

Texas is now among 19 states that allow voters to fix mail-in ballots, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

The first major test of those changes comes in just over a month when absentee ballots start to go out for the 2022 primary elections in Texas that will include the governor's race and every congressional race. By Jan. 15, absentee voting will be underway in Texas with in-person early voting starting on Feb. 14.

The changes are part of the massive elections bill the Texas Legislature passed in August after months of rancor between Republicans and Democrats.
