I'm assuming some of you at least have seen ads for this on YT. I'm not sure if they advertise at all outside of YT like on actual TV since I never watch ads.

I would never purchase it myself, but I finally decided to check what they were offering, and I was kind of shocked when it would cost $65/month for what pretty much amounts to Basic Cable and a few local sports stations. The only real benefit I could tell over BC is "unlimited" cloud DVR storage, but it's not as if you're going to build up a library of stuff that you'll have forever once you've recorded it. They could delete whatever they wanted to whenever they wanted to, and you're certainly losing it all when you stop paying the monthly fee.

I guess the other benefit would be the YouTube Original access (I think that would be what they used to call their YouTube Red subscription service?)

So... I guess my question here is, what is Google thinking? Why would they even bother with this?

I mean, if you compare it to the cost these days of Basic Cable, I'm sure it's a good deal. You don't have to rent a box, and they promise there are no additional fees that they throw at you only after you've signed a contract. Hell... back when I cut the cord in the late 2000's, they kept trying to bump my basic cable from around $65 to over $100 and I've lived without it ever since.

But they're not competing with Basic Cable. They're competing with FREE.

My own cable company has been pushing HARD the last few years to give me a "FREE" box that will give me all of the local stations as well as what they claim is a large library of On Demand content. If it weren't for the asterisk after those claims (that I don't bother reading before trashing it), I might have taken them up on the offer even though I really wouldn't use it at all.

But the real case here is Pluto TV.

Honestly, I can't believe it only has 50 Million subscribers in 2021. I think that might be because a lot of people (like me) would assume that it was an illegal app. Who gives away 250 channels for free?

It's described as "ad heavy", but it's also said that people who grew up watching traditional TV wouldn't even notice. What that says to me is that it doesn't have any more ads during shows than the basic cable does, and it would only annoy people who watch all of their stuff on paid streaming services.

Maybe Google knows for sure that traditional Cable TV is dying and wants to be the company that swallows it all? This is a possibility.

I could very much see a future where our Cable Companies end up being little more than the toll collectors on the internet infrastructure as their TV side of the business slowly dies. I mean, I couldn't see kids born after 2000 growing up and paying a Cable Company for their TV like we all did.
