Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

We've been warning about this for decades. Between the demand for ivory in Asia, and "trophy hunters," along with human encroachment on the disappearing wild spaces they depend on, elephants and other "exotic" animals are dying out.

For nothing more than human greed.

Poverty drives the poachers. Greed drives the businessmen. And sheer numbers make the Chinese a dominant force.

What are we going to do about it?

Do you think this might be a good use of the US military? And might the CIA be tasked with tracking down the middlemen?

We don't need the US military. An international fund to hire and train way more people would be good. The CIA probably already knows all about who's involved. Our current president is as anti-environment as he could be, and really doesn't care.

More education in China might help, too. I don't know if they talk a lot about the perils of the ivory trade, but they should.

Trump is anti-environment, but Obama was just as bad when it came to this. I don't see any big amount of progress during his administration - do you?

Do you ever wonder how you can get to one aged rhino, the last of its species, when you start with millions? How do you go from millions, to hundreds of thousands, to thousands, to a few hundred to one ... with everybody seeing the numbers and knowing the direction?

You do it by the thousands, tens of thousands, year after year after year ... by putting off any real action for years ... decades ... until you get to ... the end.

Despite your rabid partisanship, this goes beyond Trump.

BTW, we have zero influence over education in China.

I don't recall any hunting at Trump Tower, nor him carousing around Hunt farms. If somebody gets his daughter to visit the cute elephants, I'm not certain he wouldn't jump on the right side of this. He could surprise some people, just like he's been surprising everybody else.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

This is so depressing.

The people who poach ivory ... THEY'RE not poor.

The African nations themselves say that they want to conserve their wildlife. I'm not sure if the problem is lack of funding, or if bribes open the way to exported illegal ivory.

I guess one solution would be to make living elephants more valuable than dead ones. Pay the nations for each living elephant, or pay them to show demonstrable progress in increasing their elephant herds.

Also, interdict the ivory shipments, if possible.

As long as you insist that everything is the Republicans'/ Democrats' fault, then you fail to grasp the REAL problem with American politics.

I heard that 96 elephants are killed each day for their Ivory.

Is this stat accurate? It doesn't seem correct.

If host countries refuse to enforce rules against Extinction, can UN work toward a solution? Hunt down poachers, Killers?
