I also have not had a proper vacation in more than 20 years ... that means, taking more than a day off from work and doing something different than the endless grind. In the past three decades, every time I've traveled it's been back east for "family business" ... mainly to help out big sis, who was caring for mom.

But there are various gradations of "endless grind", because some grinds are so much worse than others. There were a couple of years that were absolutely hellacious ... in addition to our daughter's neurological deterioration into seizure-related dementia, hubby was dx with prostate cancer after years-long struggle with intractable Meniere's and prostate problems, and MIL was dying of cancer in our home. Not only was I incredibly short of sleep all the time from working a full-time job, taking the "early morning" shift with MIL, and preparing the specialized food our daughter required for the ketogenic diet (which one a desperate shot at reducing her seizures), I was emotionally wrung out from being unable to help those I love in any effective manner. If I were to add unrelenting pain on top of that, I don't know what I would have done.

Like I said, some grinds are worse than others.

Wow, that's a whole lot of gose you had to deal with there, signy. Hope things are better for you now.

Again, just trying to get my head wound norms in the US, do you not get so much paid vacation time per year, or was it just eaten up by family stuff?

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

FWIW I too haven't had a vacation in roughly 27 years. It's not like I haven't taken time off from work, but my time has also been consumed helping family members.

There is no legal requirement for paid vacation in this country.

65.7 million caregivers make up 29% of the U.S. adult population providing care to someone who is ill, disabled or aged https://www.caregiver.org/selected-caregiver-statistics ... Since health care and home care aren't government-provided, and home care isn't insurable, either you pay for it personally, which is out of reach of most people, or you do it yourself.

Also, there is a phenomenal rate of underemployment, with people working 2 or 3 part-time jobs which don't have benefits, which means no paid vacation time. And then many really can't afford to work fewer hours.

But hey, this is the greatest country on the planet with the highest standard of living. Because, by definition, we're the best at everything.

Most of the jobs that Hubby has had have only offered the major national holidays paid for (6), and even then most people have to work them.

Mining is one of the few that you get a week after a year, two after five and then three after seven years or so, but he had to start at a new one(they go in and out of business a lot here), so we're back to square one again.

I know a couple people that worked EVERY DAY for the last ten/ twenty years. But they don't have kids. I can't imagine, and don't wanna try!

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

RAPPY- I hope you get a serious chronic illness that not only takes away your money but your capacity to deal with anything more than putting one metaphorical foot before another. AND THEN I hope you have to deal with the illness of someone near and dear to you. AND THEN I hope you come looking for a little sympathy, and I hope that everyone scrapes you off the bottom of their shoes, in the manner that you so richly deserve.

And now you can explain to me why I'm being "unfair".

The no vacation thing really sucks, as does having to care for sick family members with no respite.

I've had care of family members, usually on shorter term basis, but work provodes carer's leave thankfully. 4 weeks holiday year is the minimum for permanent positions. Of course those days are fast coming to an end, with more people on casual or contract work, but I've been lucky, I'll admit it.

I wish you all unexpected windfalls to ease your situations.
