My theory is that mean spirited people that more or less hate humanity in general (aka Neocons, T-boners, etc.) tend to have real persons as their heroes, and nicer folk (most everyone else) have fantasy heroes, or a mix of real & unreal.
Whenever I hear serious assholes talk about their heroes, it's usually an asshole him or herself. Ronald Reagan, Sarah Palin, Chuck Norris, assorted rich folk (asshole or not- it's the money that counts there)...
In essence, they do not admire character as much as achievement.

Many other folk will say Kirk, Sherlock Holmes, Wonder Woman, Mother Theresa, Jesus... in short, people of character (real or not). In many cases the hero's level of good character not easily equalled/emulated by the folk in question and in some cases it's impossible.

Thoughts?

I think you may be onto something there - although I will point out that the malicious are fond of Rands literary spewing, which means the characters are technically fictional even if they are based on a real life serial killer.

My few real life exemplars are as flawed as humanity, and folks most wouldn't expect - people like Momofuku Ando, who mostly wanted to feed everyone, or Samantha Smith, who wondered why it was so necessary for us and the russians to hate each other (and got her "answer" in the form of an oh-so-convenient "accident"..) or even Maryanne Godboldo, who stood up even in the face of horrific odds, because she was a mother.

Yes, but I've never heard "a character from Atlas Shrugged" instead they tend to name Aynnie herself.

Personally these days I kinda feel drawn to Snake Plissken, but that's cause I ain't in such a great mood... heh heh.

Rich folk, like Kerry, Edwards, Pelosi, Reid, AlGore, Kennedy, Clinton... is that who ya mean?

Heroes are real folks, from the 9/11 first responders to Winston Churchill and Martin Luther King Jr.

You want to compare Indiana Jones or Spiderman to 16 year old school girl shot in the head by Taliban thugs ?

Really ?

I'll stand w/ the real heroes, thank you very much.

Growing up, my hero was Luke Skywalker. I think I still have a paper I wrote in High School as to why.

I know its cooler amongst SW fans to claim Han as their hero, but what can I say, while I was never a Boy Scout - I do carry a bit of that goodie-two-shoes thing. Captain America is my favorite Avenger, Cyclops my favorite X-Man, etc. Though Ill stick pick Batman over Superman.

There are many real-world people I admire greatly, but Im hard pressed to think of any Id label as a personal hero. There are certainly individuals I would call heroes - but they are not *My Heroes* in that they were formative in the development of my moral code, ect.

It is an interesting theory - though I think you should have asked the question cold - telling us your intent could color responses (or non-responses, as they were - I guess maybe your theory has already born fruit).

I think it's dangerous to have heroes. You can't put one person up on a pedestal and not lose some of your own humanity in the process - you're making them extra-human, and everyone else, as well of yourself then will seem lacking in comparison. It's living your life vicariously through someone else's words, character, achievements, and ideas.

You can be proud of someone or admire someone - Malala is definitely a good choice for that - but when one person is doing great things, we need to double down on that ourselves. Chances are what you can do for this crazy old world and how is going to be different from anyone else. Try too hard to emulate someone, and you'll lose touch with your own abilities.

From Bruce Lee, I learned that size does not define the ability to defend one's self. From Kwai-Chang Caine I learned that humility is the best way to conduct one's self (having a hard time with that one still).
From Kirk I learned that action must be taken at times. From Picard I learned that things must be thought through. And from Janeway I learned the best of both worlds.

Mal showed me that no matter how low you can get, redemption is possible.

Kirk, Picard and Janeway are fictional charcters from canceled TV shows, they were played by now unemployed actors who sign 8x10's at Comic Cons for $20 a pop. The only thing you can learn from them is how to sign 8x10's all day without your hand cramping, and how to get to the exit at the end of the day without being mobbed by people dressed like Klingons.

How's that for "input?"

Thanks for illustrating my point.

Pretty funny though. Asking who is your hero is starting a fight....

Not answering is is some big brave stand...

Discussing the topic is somehow being afraid of you...

Noticing how angry the reply is... is being ugly....

If you understood irony, you would feel chagrined.

Both Kirk and Picard actually get $75 for their autographs. Janeway, I don't know.

I met Shatner a few days after his 80th birthday. Just waiting in line to see him was electrifying for me. The man has incredible energy and he was very kind and friendly. And Nathan Fillion, well in 30 years of attending sci fi cons, I've never seen anyone greeting the fans with his energy and enthusiasm for three days almost non-stop. They don't do it for the money. Doohan eh? You're very blessed. Regrettably, he's the only cast member I never met.

And yes, sometimes a VERY special situation may arise. A couple of years ago I went to a Vulcan Events con on a last-minute whim. A very small 2-day show, the guest list was irresistible, so I hopped on a plane and flew to Tampa from Ft. Lauderdale. That night at the hotel bar I found myself hanging with Tony Todd (ST/NG & DS9) and Catherine Hicks (Star Trek IV). I might have well been in the Nexus.

Well, as I said before, it was a rare and irresistible list of guests. It included both Sally Kellerman AND Gary Lockwood from the Star Trek pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before". That's Gary Lockwood of 2001 A Space Odyssey. Also there was Jennifer Lien (Kes) and Dean Stockwell (Blue Velvet, Quantum Leap}. I've never really left. Like Guinan, a part of me is still in the Nexus. Perky and bubbly Catherine Hicks forever at my side.

Exactly. Being like them means you won't be like yourself.

It can also give you goals, inspire you to take up their cause... but because of the way the hero thing works, will you ever surpass them? Will you ever reach that same level? Do you want to?

I do not put anyone's views or achievement over my own. I do not strive to be anyone else. I'm unhappy and dissatisfied enough with the world as it is - and that is MY unhappiness and dissatisfaction. It is best not to compare oneself to others.

Don't make me bitch slap you! That's not my point! My POINT IS that as mammals, we take our developmental cues from others of our ilk. If we choose this or that from here or there, we make it our own, and only those doing complete impersonations are not truly themselves. Our 'heroes' can show us a shade of who we want to be, just as our non-heroes show us who or what we wish never to become.

Byte, what if I said your wording & syntax remind me of Signy? Content aside, are you less yourself because you somehow came to communicate in a similarly intelligent fashion? Okay, so Signy's not a 'hero' of yours, but someone somewhere along the line influenced you to be what you are today, even if unconsciously. You could not communicate this precisely if you had no role model(s) to follow. No?

GRRR ARGHHH, I think I'm making a mess of it here. Give the word and I'll drop it.
