Bob railed against the Washington team name during the halftime report. The last poll taken on the subject showed 72% of Native Americans are not offended by the 81-year old team name.

He cited that poll, but went on to make a strong argument. I think it is time for a change. How 'bout just The Skins, as they're usually called that anyway. Couldn't keep the Indian picture on the helmets though. Maybe Miley Cyrus?

My old university has permission from the Ute tribe to use their name and some of the cultural symbolism in exchange for some scholarships for tribe members, so I'm in no position to comment.

From a logistics standpoint, if you think about it too hard, I don't know if "red-skins" is so much offensive as it is STRANGE. You wouldn't call a football team "the black-skins" unless you had some odd tastes.

But it's an established franchise, and unless or until customers and tribe members decide not to give their money to the owners and management of the team, they can call the team whatever they want I guess.

Maybe my problem is I haven't lived with the stigma of some of these words, maybe someone else would feel more strongly.

Utes, Seminoles, Braves, Warriors, even Indians ... Those names don't conjure up the same historical racial imagery as Redskins does. In the 1800's they were Redskins and we were Palefaces. Neither is a description of character.

Little Bob seems to be suffering from short mans syndrome. He wants more out of life than to just be known as some sports announcer. He wants folks to take him more seriously than that, it would seem.

So we all should care about what he says we should care about.

Because he cares about it.

And if we don't agree w/ him, we're all evil racists. Who don't care.

But he cares.

Jeeesh! I posted this thread because it's a pretty big story, one of the few being discussed in the verse besides the budget and shutdown crap. I like Costas. The last time he voiced a non-sports opinion he took a lot of crap for it, like who is he to say anything other than the score. He's usually a pretty reserved guy, but if he wants to opine sometimes that's his right. I don't really believe that 20 million tv football fans are gonna be necessarily influenced by him one way or t'other.

They DON'T want social issues like gun control or PC names of teams shoved down their throats during MNF.

There's time a plenty for those issues to be kicked around. NOT DURING THE GORRAM GAME !

He wasn't making fun of his team's coach. He wasn't invested in a franchise which would mock an entire group of people as to represent the city in the fledgling football league.

Yanno something, football sucks! It has become un-watchable. Too many penalties, too many time-outs, too many ref. reviews, too many commercials. 3 1/2+ hours to play a game? I'd rather watch WPT Poker.
