I dislike all labels as they are ultimately divisive and used to manipulate. Hyphenated or not. "I'm on you're team and they're the enemy" type nonsense.

But I also feel it is up to other people whether they want to be labeled and what labels and causes they take up. However, some caution: it says more about them than they might intended.

Better for us, ALL of us, to be uniquely Americans FIRST, and still remembering from where we or our ancestors came. For America is an ideal, a mind set, and not to be defined by the color of one's skin, or religion, or culture.

I'm saying that unquestioned loyalty to any principle, even a country, compromises logic. And that seems to be what Good old Teddy is actually promoting there.

I do not identify as "American," except sometimes JOKINGLY when I refer to myself as Scottish-American as a spoof of labels. I do not cherish our government or mindsets as an "ideal." I have no loyalties.

I do this to cultivate my objectivity. You make a nice impassioned argument, but I am unaffected by this passion. Pathos does not sway me.

Racism exists. I hope you're not disputing that. In the above study, racism gave white-sounding names a 50% to FIVE TIMES advantage in call-backs for hiring. Bobby J makes the further logical falsehood of assuming that he can generalize from his own personal experience to all others - statistics be damned, apparently. Suffice it to say that his experience isn't reflective of many others - he is the rare occurrence way out there on the statistical tables when it comes to minorities considered as a whole.

I read the quote and it sounded like a bunch of double talk (surprise, surprise a politician talking in double-speak). But I see your point.
I always felt that the Melting Pot existed no matter what anyone said, we all come from different backgrounds, we all are immigrants. No one here is a true American except for the natives (I'm talking technically).

But yeah, in the end he's pretty much placing the blame on minorities for racism. Funny thing though, it's these self-proclaimed Americans who put the race in racism. Racists remarks about the president, saying he's a Kenyan and an Arab. Yet it is those very self-same differences that make our country great, because all are striving for the one thing we all have in common as a people and a nation - FREEDOM.

To translate, it appears Jindal is actually blaming minorities for causing white people to be racist towards them, and is calling on minorities to end racism by conforming to American life as white people see it. In short, minorities should be more like white people if they want racism to stop.

Hypocritically enough, not even a day went by before Jindal violated his own call to action and proudly accepted being referred to as the first Indian-American Governor by David Gregory on “Face The Nation.”

Incidentally, both Rev Jackson and Louis Farrakhan tell their audiences pretty much the exact same thing. The study shows QUITE CLEARLY that even having a non-white sounding NAME makes you lose the job opportunity - despite the fact that your qualifications are just as good. Let me repeat that in caps, since you can't seem to focus on it:

IT'S BEING DENIED THE JOB ON ACCOUNT OF RACE EVEN THOUGH YOUR QUALIFICATIONS ARE JUST AS GOOD AS A WHITE PERSON'S.

It's extremely difficult for everyone to be "just American" when everything around you MAKES you a hyphenated-American. Try filling out just about any form. Try getting a job, or an apartment, or any of what the article Kiki put up mentions. Try reading the news. Try watching TV or movies. It's there, based on skin color, clothing, vocal style, etc., etc. Refusing to see it doesn't make it not exist. I'm sure there are many people who would like to be considered AMERICAN only, but who are classified Something-American by everything around them.

It's a game to say otherwise. Every single person who chooses to be "only" American but looks different because of their skin is hyphenated, whether they like it or not. The only ones who can pretend otherwise have white enough skin to "pass", as people have tried to do forever in this country. That would not change if nobody kept any of their heritage ever.

I told this story before, about a supervisor I had once who was my friend, a really beautiful, intelligent, neat woman. Susan moved here from New York, had very sophisticated speech with hardly even a New York accent. She went apartment hunting, ended up getting really friendly with one apartment manager over the phone, the woman couldn't wait to meet her, they had tons in common and the woman was really excited about her moving into the building. She went to see the apartment, the woman was standing at the door as she walked up, suddenly looking very uncomfortable. Told her the apartment was already rented, even tho' the sign was still right there in the window (she hadn't had time to pull it, standing in the doorway when Susan drove up), turned around and went right back inside and closed the door. Sue had someone call when she got home; the apartment was still for rent.

It's not about being "just American", and it's a lie and a game to say it is. Rap will always toe the party line, he has no desire to make sense or deal with reality or facts, by now you all know that.
