And how's that working out for us all ?

Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and policy assistant to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, told reporters Wednesday to expect the Obama administration to quickly propose an economic stimulus package costing a minimum of $150 billion but "more likely" in the $300 billion range. "An economic recovery plan will be the first thing out of the box," he said.

More Stimulus? Analysis Finds Funds for Roads, Bridges Has Had No Impact

WASHINGTON -- President Obama's top economist gave administration support for a new $75 billion stimulus plan that passed the House last month, but a new analysis shows the government has stimulated little in the past year through one of its most vaunted programs -- road construction.
In fact, regions and states that received ample stimulus funding for building roads and bridges had equally high unemployment rates as areas that didn't get cash from the $787 billion recovery package signed in February of last year, a new Associated Press analysis found.
The figures put to the test Obama's argument that more road money would address an "urgent need to accelerate job growth."

WASHINGTON (AP) – Republicans in the Senate have killed legislation sponsored by President Obama to spend $60 billion on building and repairing roads, rail lines and other infrastructure to help kick-start the sluggish economy.

The 51-49 vote fell well short of the 60 votes required under Senate procedures to start work on the bill. The infrastructure measure is the third in a string of Senate defeats for Obama's stimulus-style jobs agenda, which would be financed by a tax surcharge on the very wealthy.

Over $48 BILLION intended for transportation projects, and $27.5 Billion specific to roads and bridges.

Quote:

U.S. infrastructure spending has plummeted since 2008

Now, that’s a chart of all public construction spending, from highways to water projects to public hospitals to schools. So what if we just look at highways and roads? We get this chart:

How did this happen? States and local governments are the biggest part of the story here. They’ve historically provided the vast majority of spending for roads, highways and bridges, and they’ve been pulling back on spending since 2008 as a result of the economic downturn and requirements to balance their budgets. California’s transportation spending declined by 31 percent from 2007 to 2009, for instance. Texas’s fell by 8 percent.

At the same time, Congress hasn’t filled in the gap. There was a one-time $46 billion infusion of transportation spending in the stimulus bill. But that wasn’t enough to offset the drop at the state and local level. Meanwhile, the most recent highway bill out of Congress kept federal spending at current levels rather than increasing it.

We’ve seen various reports arguing that America’s infrastructure is in dire need of an upgrade. The American Society of Civil Engineers gave the nation’s bridges a C+ in its 2013 report card, and said that full repairs would cost $20 billion per year over the next decade, a 60 percent boost in spending. These estimates don’t always take a full account of costs and benefits, but the I-5 collapse will no doubt give these groups more ammo.

And experts say it’s typically cheaper to fix roads and bridges early on rather than wait until they get truly decrepit. That suggests now could be an apt time to invest in repairs, rather than putting them off until later. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/05/24/u-s-infrast

Duh?

We've seen the infrastructure/roads/transportation aspect at work in the Bay Area for ages; they've repaved roads, rebuilt roads that were literally falling down, retrofitted bridges...the signs are all around, if one just opens one's eyes and LOOKS at them...

To begin with, the bridge that collapsed had NOTHING to do with infrastructure...does he not realize this? From the article I posted above:
Quote:

It’s worth being very clear upfront that the I-5 bridge in question wasn’t considered “structurally deficient” in any way — the bridge collapse is being blamed on a truck bumping an overhead girder.

Does he not know this; is he being disingenuous; or did he just grab the photo "'cuz"??

As far as "regions and states that received ample stimulus funding for building roads and bridges had equally high unemployment rates as areas that didn't get cash from the $787 billion recovery package", I'm afraid I'd need some facts and figures to show that the two directly correlated--in other words, if that's too complex, to show that the states and regions which received stimulus funds wouldn't be in WORSE shape if they hadn't received that stimulus, which helped keep them above water until things turned around. If he'd offer any such facts, maybe we could debate the issue...?

Otherwise, the concept that our infrastructure is in really bad shape, and that repairing it creates jobs and BENEFITS US ALL OVER THE LONG HAUL, plus the fact that we've ignored and under-funded our infrastructure dramatically for years, isn't really something to debate, it's just FACTS. So what is his point, or does he have one??

What "lies" did I post? Be specific. Show me what I posted that is factually incorrect, and then show that I *KNEW* it to be incorrect when I posted it, because that is what has been decided upon as a "lie" around here. As has so often been claimed (even by you, if memory serves), if a person doesn't KNOW something is untrue when they repeat it, then it cannot be considered a "lie".

So what did I post that meets your own definition of a "lie"?

Or is it just a "lie" when it conflicts with your beliefs?

Yeah I do. One has zero to do w/ the other.

Money intended to be spent on roads and bridges from the stimulus plan has scarcely been spent on ... roads and bridges.

Do we pay attention to roads and bridges now?

" U.S. According to Federal Highway Administration records examined by Bloomberg News last year, about 18,000 American bridges are classified as fracture-critical, meaning a failure of one part of the structure would probably cause a portion or the entire bridge to collapse. "

Rap twists himself into such a pretzel, it's gone way beyond amusing straight into pathetic, and stuck there. So when BUSH spent money on infrastructure, it was good. OBAMA wanting to spend money on infrastructure can ONLY be "wasted" money...

I won't bother further, it's just too absurd to even address.
