Australian mining mogul Clive Palmer wants to establish an island filled with giant, robotic dinosaurs — and that’s not an April Fools’ joke, the AFP reports. Luckily, though, Palmer appears to have moved on from his original dream of cloning a dinosaur and instead has decided to fill his island with giant robotic ones. Perhaps someone finally showed the billionaire Jurassic Park.

Palmer started his giant dinosaur collection last year, putting two animatronic behemoths — a Tyrannosaurus rex called Jeff and an Omeisaurus named Bones — on his Palmer Coolum Resort on the coast north of Brisbane, Australia. However to make his fantasy of a dinosaur park a reality, Palmer is dreaming even bigger, “If you’ve seen Jeff and Bones, well you haven’t seen anything yet.”

“We’ll have the world’s biggest dinosaur exhibit, with 165 animatronic dinosaurs,” Palmer said. The creatures will soar up to 6 m tall and weigh over a ton and will be able to move their tails and blink. The animals will also be displayed around the resort and are expected to arrive in Australia later this month.

Palmer has certainly proved himself capable of visionary uses of extraordinary sums of money. In February he announced plans to build Titantic II, a replica of the Titanic that will recreate the sail across the Atlantic Ocean — complete with period costumes and a ban on television and Internet access.

Why does he take on these projects? Palmer said recently, “I want to spend the money I’ve got before I die.” Palmer has a lot of money to burn through too. Forbes estimates his worth at $795 million, though he calls himself a billionaire. http://newsfeed.time.com/2013/04/01/australian-mogul-wants-to-open-gia

I could say something about idiots with more money than brains, or the inequality of the world having gotten just too fucking far out of hand, but what the hell...

At least he gave up on cloning them!

Mechagodzilla says " hi! "

But really, this is just stupid. ARE dinosaurs wickedly awesome? Hell yeah they are! And are robo-dinosaurs a neat way to show the world who ran this planet , for 150+ MILLION years ? Sure. But you really don't need a whole frelling park of robo-dinos to paint the picture, do ya ?

How about a travelling exhibit, of say a dozen critters, not an entire dino population !

I guess if you're gonna fund an entire new line of amusement machines like these giant robots, you save $ on making dozens, and not just a few, but man...even I'd get bored after the first 20 or so. No one is gonna care about 165 of them.

*edit - Actually, there already was a traveling museum exhibit , some years ago, of life size and near life size dinos, made by some Japanese company. Wasn't too shabby either, but after the first few minutes of " WOW! Cool!", the effect quickly wears off.

I guess it's a positive that some wealthy bloke is geeked up about dinosaurs, but this ? Fund more digs, is what he could do if he really cared.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen
