Seriously.
I mean, he'd see something wrong or see someone wronged & he'd use force to stop/rectify it. Conservative, right?
Or he'd preach acceptance or non-violence to avoid destructive or deadly conflict like Ghandi would. Liberal, right?

So WTF was he?

I mean, it's ONE or the OTHER, RIGHT????

My not-so-veiled point here is that I see him as I see my own self- basically apolitical and wanting to deal with each new circumstance as it arises in the most effective way available. No pre-determined mechanical responses. An organic feel for the situation or event.
Hopefully.
Buddhism tasks us to question everything, even our own beliefs.
The whole 'this' or 'that' is a complete fallacy to me.
And one that causes needless suffering to this day IMO.

I can't say. I tried his walking through walls technique so many times it's all a blur now. All I remember is that it was simply the greatest show of its time, and I wanted those dragons on my arms so bad it hurt. However, I'm sure my wife would say that Caine was definitely a liberal.

ps. If I had known back then how bad Bruce Lee got fucked out of that show that he actually created, it wouldn't have made any difference. I didn't become a Bruce Lee fan until years later. I wonder if Green Hornet fans of Bruce knew what happened or if they cared.

But he freakin' killed the Emperor's Nephew for killing Master Po!! How is that 'Liberal'??

PS, Lee had NOTHING to do with creating that series, too bad Dragon: The Bruce Lee story was so full of crap.

Well they needed a dramatic plot device to get Caine to America and that one worked. In that moment of rage and revenge he lost himself. He suffered and atoned for it for the rest of his life. Conservatives rarely truly atone.

Why would they make up the 'creative' aspect, when they could have just shown his reaction to not getting the role?

In another dvd called 'Curse of the Dragon', narrated by George Takei, the same claim is made. Kareem Abdul Jabbar and James Coburn, who were students of Bruce, talk about his disappointment over that show.

Lee had an idea for a western show that was similar, that's all. Then he was briefly considered for "Kung Fu' but passed over for Carradine. It's all here:

A Jewish guy from New York? That Shitzu don't hunt. More likely a conspiracy of racist Hollywood types of that era banding together for their own greedy self-interests. They took Lee's idea and they ran with it all the way to the bank. No tickee, no washee.

Never realized you were from Hollywood. Guess that explains the racism, eh?

It was a great show, and David Carradine was terrific in it. But he was not Chinese. His "half-American" background was clever, but a Hollywood white-wash nonetheless.

Actually, Ed Spielman had friends in Chinatown, some taking Kung Fu from teachers straight from China, and they related the stories of the Shaolin Temple to him, which fascinated him, so he researched it and wrote a screenplay, and about that time was when Lee was pushing his western "Warrior" idea. Warner, I take it, liked Lee's idea enough to bandy it about, but Lee was not yet a superstar, so it stalled long enough for the execs to spot Spielman's script, and saw it as the way to go on such a project. So Lee deserves credit for getting the general idea of a 'kung fu western' noticed. Also, In China, the kung fu craze was gaining momentum, and Warner wanted to cash in on this coming trend somehow.
Bottom line: when Lee got the 'no' on his Warrior idea (1970-71) he bolted for China to make movies. In late '71 The Big Boss was released in China as Carradine was filming the Kung Fu TV movie/pilot.

That's what I learned from your cite reference. It was a very interesting read. In "Curse", James Coburn talks about advising a frustrated Bruce to go back to Hong Kong to get work and become a better actor. He said when you become a star over there Hollywood will notice.

Spielman considered suing Linda Lee over the "concept" allegation made in "Dragon", but decided not to out of respect for her loss of Brandon. It was a smart decision.

The 2-hour tv pilot Kung Fu was an incredible masterpiece. Nothing like it had even been seen before. With the ensuing popularity of the series, I wonder why they never made a big-screen Hollywood movie.

Even critics in Hong Kong questioned why Americans had made a great (if somewhat inaccurate in the details) movie dealing with the Shaolin Temple that rivalled their best efforts.

Okay, truthfully? IMO most of the highly professional crew from the first two seasons left to do other things, and those that remained, along with Carradine, were basically Hollywood hippies that were stoned a lot of the time, and they kind of got a reputation as such. The entire third season was such a letdown from the first two excellent seasons, I conjure any ideas of a feature film were dropped as the series wound down. A lot of the third season looked like it was made & written by film students & trainees. Pity.
If I seem harsh here, it's just that they were part of something so special- to piss that away on overconfident ego & partying seems a crime.

Fascinating information!

Do you have the series on dvd?

I remember Nancy Kwan being in a couple of episodes. Were they good?

I remember an episode with an assassin sent from China. There was an epic fight. Right? Still good?

That was in the TV movie/pilot. But another ep featured one more, if memory serves at this late hour... all the fights choreographed by David Chow in the first two seasons were the real deal. I have his book:

I was curious about Nancy Kwan so I checked IMDB. Turns out I'm not senile yet, as she was in a 2-part episode...

Kung Fu (TV series)
– The Cenotaph: Part II (1974) … Mayli Ho
– The Cenotaph: Part I (1974) … Mayli Ho

Those were the last two episodes of Season 2. I'm a big fan of her work. She was very special, the hottest star in the business for a couple of years, even made the cover of Life Magazine. She had the look, the bod, and could sing and dance.

GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

My recollection is that mostly he'd hang around doing nothing except having flashbacks while the baddies escalated violently, until finally some innocent person or persons would get killed or maimed, and then he'd finally take action in an equally violent response. So I'd have to say he wasn't liberal or conservative, but an avatar of Government.

Of course, it's been almost 40 years since I watched it, so the subtilties may have been forgotten by now.

Takin' a break, be back in a while.

'No.'
'Do you hear the grasshopper which at your feet?'
Caine opens his eyes and looks down at his feet to see a grasshopper there. 'Old Man, how is it that you hear these things?'
'Young Man, how is it that you do not?'"
