Things a 7-year-old boy expects Mom to put in his backpack: A peanut butter sandwich. Pencils. Maybe even a nice note with a little heart scrawled on it.

Things he doesn't: a flare gun, a .22-caliber pistol, a loaded magazine and, for good measure, 14 more bullets in a plastic bag.

But that's exactly what a second-grader had inside his Batman backpack Thursday morning when he arrived at Wave Preparatory Elementary School in Far Rockaway in Queens, Police Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said Friday. http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/18/us/new-york-backpack-guns/index.html?hpt

Okay, I could say "heeere we go....", but it's not that simple:
Quote:

The mom, Deborah Farley, 53, told police she had been, according to Browne, "out walking the streets of Queens late Wednesday night" with the guns in her son's backpack and she forgot to take them out.

She rushed back to school after dropping him off Thursday and asked the boy what he'd done with the gun, Browne said.

When the boy told her he'd handed it over to a classmate, she finally came clean to administrators, who put the school on lockdown and called police.

My question is: Why did she feel the need for a flare gun, a pistol, a loaded magazine AND more bullets to walk around? Yeah, some protection might be valid, but all that??

Of course, given
Quote:

A search of the woman's home found more ammunition and seven plastic bags of marijuana, Browne said.

I guess she's into having a lot of everything! (Seven plastic bags? Hmmmm...might she have been "walking the streets" late at night to, I dunno, sell dope?

Go figure. If we keep going the way we are, how long before something like this happens INTENTIONALLY, d'ya think?

Definately a case for actual competence and knowledge of safe use and handling procedures being a requirement for purchase.

In fact I might well consider adding live fire range test (safe handling, ability to operate, actual proficiency) to that proposal, as we do ask folk to physically demonstrate competence behind the wheel in regards to automobile operation.

The worst event of this nature I think was that jerk shooting himself in the foot while trying to demonstrate firearms safety to a school class - I ain't even gonna post it cause it's so cringeworthy to me, even BEFORE that he makes two OTHER safe handling mistakes!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_safety#Rules_and_mindset

In the original post case, we might add a fifth - KNOW WHERE YOUR GUN IS.
*facepalm*

Well, just today there were FIVE people shot in three separate incidents at gun shows related to "Gun Appreciation Day".

If only somebody there had had a gun!

I guess, really, as long as they're just shooting each other, we should kind of stand back and give a polite golf-clap...

Ouch, sometimes black humor has a cutting edge, Mikey.
If they'd only hit themselves that'd be less cringeworthy.

I've always been a hardass about safe handling and operation, if that range Sgt hadn't pulled the MPO rep out of there when he did I might well have clobbered him, cause you don't go get in someones face and lay hands on them on the firing line *hissss*
That and this here powder burn scar from a jackass in ohio, who *DID* get roughed up for it after I tossed his piece into the lake, and ironically it went off WHILE I was laying into him for waving the damn thing around like a conductors baton with his finger in the trigger guard.

It's a SERIOUS pet peeve with me that folks who ought to know better set such a damn bad example.
Not to mention endangering innocent people by doing so.
What kind of nimrod loads up at a gun show anyways, that's what snapcaps are for, and if you really need to test fire take it to a freakin proper range, or if one is not available hold out for a warranty or something, damn.

I had a drill for this at one time - you line the fools up side by side, then take a weapon, pop the mag, clear the chamber, and hand it to the guy to your right, who then does the same, till the last guy puts it down on the table.
Then I asked them whether it was loaded or not.
(A little sleight of hand was involved here)
IF I got any answer other than "Loaded!", I then fired it into the sand barrel.
THAT lesson stuck.

Yup. I learned a long time ago that NO gun is unloaded until I've pulled the mag and cycled the action at least three times, locked the breach open, and visually inspected it.

And if I then let the close the breach and hand it to someone else, they'd best not assume it's unloaded until they check it themselves.

One decent lesson my dad taught me: As long as you live, nobody is ever going to hand you an unloaded gun or point one at you. EVERY gun is loaded until you yourself have verified that it's not.

You know how many people are killed each year by "unloaded" guns?

The first three "victims" wounded were found at a gun show in North Carolina on Saturday, when a man was trying to open the case of a 12-gauge shotgun accidentally fired it off. The people struck by the bullet were a retired sheriff's deputy and two other attendees. The shootings occurred at the Dixie Gun and Knife Show, at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh.
....
In addition, it seems a long way down the road in good old Indiana, a man shot his own hand while unloading his .45-caliber semi-automatic. This took place at the Indy 1500 Gun and Knife Show in Indianapolis.

Just too goddamned funny for words...(only because nobody was seriously hurt, mind you)

The guy who wrote the article ( http://www.idigitaltimes.com/articles/14675/20130120/will-sandy-hook-c

) was making a point that, by reporting all these, the media has an "agenda". "Could these recent gun show shootings being linked together in one news story be the work of a larger agenda?" What's humorous about THAT is that he's virtually incoherent in his attempts to write:

"...Thou no one was seriously injured..."

"...who Sandy Hook conspiracy theorist say didn't actually die and in fact was found picture with the president after ..."

"Y bullying and the baby learning to walk may result in some..."

"....relating the need for more regulation at gun show to the ...."

"The reasons advocates of closing the gun show sales loophole have sited are..."

"...but rather to curb gun being acquired by criminals or those without permits, as the sales re happening privately on a one-to-one basis."

"To me, if I were a strong opposed to gun control laws this reporting of non-fatal accidents which occured at random gun shows would be just enough to get my fired fueled back up as it seems ..."

Not only that, he poses the question "do you see what happened at the gun shows today as reason to ban private sales...", when NOBODY is talking about banning private sales, only that they get background checks like all other gun sales!

"International Digital Times"...wow! And naturally, not noticing all that or anything ELSE, there's comments a-plenty about "yeah, it may be a conspiracy..." Seems they're about as bright as he is...

No one one seriously injured? If a guy shot his own hand with a .45, trust me, he was most likely seriously injured.

http://negligentdischarge.com/leg.html

That's what a .45 did to a guy who unintentionally fired it into his leg.

And the funniest thing about these gun show "accidents" is that these are supposedly "responsible gun owners" involved, including an off-duty cop working as a guard.

So tell me again how "safe" our schools would be with teachers carrying loaded guns.

And why don't all gun shows allow people to carry loaded guns, if that's supposed to be so fucking "safe"?

Speaking of "responsible gun owners", here's what one has to say:
Quote:

Count me among the many gun owners who don’t think President Obama is infringing on our Second Amendment rights by proposing a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines.

Since the terrible events at Sandy Hook Elementary School, I have been thinking about guns and my grandfather. There were always guns in my grandfather’s house, and there are guns in my house.

grew up around guns. My grandfather was a hunter, and I am a hunter. Some of my fondest memories of my grandfather are of walking with him in an Iowa corn field during pheasant season, sitting next to him in a duck blind on the Missouri flyway, and the two of us watching a rising covey of quail in the northwest timber pasture.

Guns always had rules. I remember my first BB gun being taken away when I was caught pointing it at something I shouldn’t. When I was a little older, I was allowed to carry a single shot .22 rifle while I followed alongside my grandfather in the field. However, I was not allowed to carry ammunition. I had to first learn to be aware of where my gun was pointed.

“A man who doesn’t pay attention to the muzzle of his gun doesn’t pay attention to anything,” my grandfather would say. Once I was caught pointing my .22 at a barn. “The gun’s empty,” I protested when reprimanded. “Every gun-accident story I’ve ever heard involved ‘an empty gun,’ ” my grandfather would say.

My first shotgun was a semiautomatic 20 gauge. It didn’t take me long to find and remove the wooden plug in the magazine that limited the ammunition capacity to three shells. I knew the plug was required by federal law for duck hunting, but in my young mind, I reasoned, “I’m not duck hunting, what’s the point of keeping my shells in my pocket, when I can carry them in my gun?” Actors in my favorite westerns and war movies always had plenty of ammunition in their guns. Besides, I had a “real” gun now, like the men I hunted with, and I was making up for all those days carrying a gun with no shells.

The first time my grandfather watched me feed five shells into my gun, he looked at me soberly and said, “Nobody needs more than three shells. If you miss with the first two, you’re probably going to miss with the third.”

He told me the story of his Auto-5, and how its inventor, John Browning, became concerned that the gun would be banned because of its five-shot capacity. A compromise was reached to accommodate federal law: Shotguns with five shot-magazines could be used for waterfowl hunting, but that wooden plug had to be placed in the magazine to reduce the capacity to three shells.

Last month, when the shooter entered Sandy Hook Elementary School, he was not carrying a five-round Browning shotgun. He entered that school with a .223 Bushmaster rifle. This gun is designed to hold a lot of ammunition, to fire that ammunition rapidly, and to be reloaded quickly. The feature that makes this gun so lethal is its high-capacity “quick change” magazine.

The shooter’s gun had a box magazine that held 30 rounds. When empty, the entire magazine could be ejected, and another slammed into position in seconds. The only difference between this gun and a military weapon is the removal of the fully automatic functionality that allows for continuous firing as long as the trigger is held back.

Guns like the Bushmaster are designed for one thing: rapid fire, with minimal time needed to reload. It is true that the shooter could have killed children at Sandy Hook with a five-shot deer rifle and a pocketful of extra cartridges, but it would have taken him more time to shoot and more time to reload. In that time, fewer children might have died. Mr. Obama’s proposal to limit magazine capacity to 10 rounds could make a difference in a future tragedy.

It's true, we're not the same society about guns as we used to be, even in the very near past. Do we want to keep going the way we are?

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Given the accounts I suspect the "injuries" in these cases were powderburn and richochet/frag rather than actual hits, and thanks be for it - and that the media didn't bother to check their facts before yanking on the dog whistle of the day, more than likely.

Still no damn excuse for unsafe/incompetent weapon handling, though.
