When will these assholes ever grow up and stop acting like children in a playground fight? What they're proposing is PRECISELY like charging things on your charge card, then when the bill comes due saying "I don't feel like paying that, so I'm not going to". The debt ceiling has to be raised to PAY FOR THINGS THEY'VE ALREADY BOUGHT! How does tha tmake any sense?
Quote:

They are losing the battle over higher taxes on the wealthy, so now Republicans are threatening a political war next year when it comes time to raise the nation's debt ceiling.

With cracks appearing in their anti-tax facade and polls showing most Americans favoring President Barack Obama's stance in the fiscal cliff negotiations, GOP legislators are starting to advocate a tactical retreat to fight another day.

Conservative Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, promised the newly re-elected Obama "one hell of a fight" next year if the president forces through his plan for high-income earners to pay more taxes without agreeing to substantive steps to reduce the nation's chronic federal deficits and debt.

"But there will come a time in February and March where we have to raise the debt ceiling," Graham said Tuesday on "Piers Morgan Tonight" on CNN.

"I will not raise the debt ceiling ever again until we get significant entitlement reforms, because if we don't reform entitlements, we're going to become Greece," adding that the situation presented a chance for Obama to lead. "But if he doesn't lead, there's going to be one hell of a fight over raising the debt ceiling."MUCH more at http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/11/politics/fiscal-cliff/index.html?hpt=hp_

No, we will become Greece if we insist on more austerity measures, which is what put Greece and much of Europe in the position they're in NOW.

Boehner even said it: "Boehner says that any increase in government borrowing to pay its bills"--BORROWING TO PAY ITS BILLS; even he recognizes that it's not about not raising the debt ceiling to pay stuff in the future, it's to pay our EXISTING BILLS. It's just insane.

These right winger have completely lost touch with reality. Everything is "winning" and "losing"--where do the American people and our country come into the equation? Sad truth is: We don't!

"Where are the president's spending cuts?" asked Boehner, R-Ohio, the lead GOP negotiator. They are the $1 trillion in spending cuts ALREADY AGREED TO in the past two years--remember those? So where are the tax increases from the other side? Nada.

Hello,

It's surprising to see the Republicans threaten to cut their own throats in public.

If they cause the nation to default on its debt, or threaten such a scenario sufficiently to cause another credit rating blow, they will be reviled.

They keep fighting the wrong battles at the wrong times. Now is the time to be silent. Now is the time to wait for the enemy to make a mistake.

Instead, they keep marching towards their own special cliff, embracing a long fall towards irrelevancy.

I want them to stop harming themselves, because at some point we will need a strong opposition to a truly ludicrous Democratic initiative... and they will have made themselves too weak to oppose it.

That is my major concern, too, Anthony. It was fun for a while to watch them shoot themselves in the foot, but they've gone so far out by now that I worry about them becoming irrelevant--or splitting into two irrelevant parties!

I, unfortunately, CAN imagine them doing this. The results would be far more catastrophic than this "fiscal cliff" everyone's talking about right now, and would have far-ranging, GLOBAL consequences. It's like they've talked themselves into some kind of alternate universe where all that counts is scoring points and nothing has any consequences...

Struck me as interesting, when I considered it. From what I read here and see elsewhere, it's obvious that the right wingers would very much like to DESTROY the left, completely eliminate them, while those of us not of the right wing--moderates and others as well as left-wingers--are concerned about the right becoming nonviable. Says something interesting about the different mentalities, to me.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Hello,

Sane people enjoy having someone disagree with them, at least occasionally.

Sane people realize that no matter how smart they are, they aren't always right, and sometimes they should be opposed.

I wish there were better opponents in play.

I just found it interesting when it occurred to me. The visceral stuff I read here--and hear elsewhere--suddenly struck me when contrasted with those of us here who have voiced concern over the possibility of the right MAKING ITSELF irrelevant.

Hello,

I think you've noticed something remarkable, Niki. I always took it as a given that politicide was a bad idea, but until now I never realized that some people may have that as an avowed goal. I think many GOPers would indeed be pleased in a world without Liberals. Though to be fair, the reverse is probably true with some. Anyone on the extreme, who believes they have the One True Answer probably feels this way.

It's not just the extreme, Anthony. Remember that Karl Rove hoped for a "permanent Republican majority"--a misquote by the way. What he actually said on NBC News Meet The Press was "Would I like to see the Republican Party be the dominant party for whatever time history gives it the chance to be? You bet." For context, his previous remark was "...there are no permanent majorities in American politics. They last for about 20 or 30 or 40 or, in the case of the Roosevelt coalition, 50 or 60 years." ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6430019) So he was hoping for five or six decades of Republican majority, not a permanent one. The concept is similar.

Whether it's the fringe or otherwise, all I know is HERE, I've heard some version or other of "Kill Democrats" many times, while I don't recall hearing "Kill Republicans" even once. My memory might be incorrect, but that's the perception I got.

For me, it's all of a piece with the "we didn't win the election, so we're gonna secede", and all the "target" and "second amendment solution" stuff we heard earlier. I don't recall hearing much, if any, of that from the left--if it's out there, it IS usually by fringe types, not by politicians running for government, people who represent the party, or main-stream sources. Again, I could be wrong, but it's certainly the impression I've gotten of the difference in the rhetoric between the two parties.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

For some views on the idea of "A World Without Liberals":
Quote:

--There would b prosperity for all...good education...employment...mutual respect and cooperation...and as was always the case in the past..before they abolished all concept of self-responsibility, work ethic, moral rectitude...we would then re-build what was once a great nation.

--Definitely cut down on the stupidity and money wasting.

--it would be Utopian........No racism, no heavy taxes to pay for their entitlements, no more wars, no more hate, and the list is actually endless..............no more stupidity and ignorance.........

--What a lovely, sane world it would then be.

--We'd be much better off.

--and the world would be a better place

--You mean Paradise, right?

--Imagine there's no liberals, It's easy if you try, No one emasculating that sensative and yet masculine guy, Imagine all the searching for a way to live, Not on welfare but to make it and back to the needy give......

--That must be like Heaven is like :)

--The world would be better off without liberals

--There would be more $$ in my paycheck, gasoline would be cheaper, most goods and services would cost less...and there would be less WHINNING on television!!

--It would then define the America we are supposed to be.

--I think most liberals today are very confused about what it means to be an American !

--Other sewer rats would show up to fill the nitch. Look what happened when liberals lost their Soviet heroes, they jumped on the global warming band wagon. If you take one out, two more show up to reinfect the world. http://www.sodahead.com/united-states/imagine-no-liberals/question-228

It may be the source, but for 26 pages it went on like that, with few "No" or "None of the Above" (the choice was "Yes I can imagine a world without liberals" or "No, the world would suck without liberals" or "None of the above".

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Can't find one for "Imagine a world without conservatives"...

There was also an "Imagine a NATION without liberals", which got quite a few more "No"s, but also got

Better to die on the sword of principle than to surrender. I doubt the GOP has it in them to do the right thing and not give in.

FREMDFIRMA

I myself am rooting for their self-destruction - as I pointed out in that little "history lesson" in another thread, they've been nothing but poison from day one of thier little push for NeoFeudoFascism, and no matter what degree of purging or reform happens they always come right back around to it every goddamn time, as well as using their toxic influence to infiltrate and subjugate any attempt to create viable third parties, so why exactly would anyone think they'd clean up their act now if they've been unable and unwilling to do so for well over two hundred years ?

LET them self-destruct, firmly encourage it, I say - only then will a viable opposition rise (cause the power vaccuum will demand it) without their political machine subverting and poisoning it before it even gets off the ground, and THEN we can use it to bulldoze the damn Democrats off their own cliff into the dustbin of history right next to em.

And good riddance to the lot!

Well, all I can say is I'd happily let them die on the sword of principle, if that's what they want. Would probably be better for all in the end. If the difference between "surrender" and "compromise" isn't something they can grasp, they don't belong in government. A government void of compromise is a government that doesn't work, and while some think that would be a good thing, I believe they're very wrong and would find themselves suffering greatly if they got their wish.
