From MSNBC in Feburary, 2009.

"Supporters of programs to provide legal marijuana to patients with painful medical conditions are celebrating Attorney General Eric Holder’s statement this week that the Drug Enforcement Administration would end its raids on state-approved marijuana dispensaries."

But...

From the Seattle Weekly on 11/15/2011.

"Reports are flooding in right now about widespread DEA raids at medical-marijuana dispensaries in the Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia areas. At least eight different dispensary storefronts have apparently been targeted.

The DEA has confirmed the raids, but is refusing to provide any details at the present.

Other sources confirm the dispensaries raided as: North End Club 420, Tacoma Cross, Lacey Cross, Olympia Patient Resource Center, The Healing Center of Olympia, both branches of the Seattle Cannabis Coop and the Seattle G.A.M.E. Collective.

Ben Livingston, board member of Cannabis Defense Coalition says he and others have been expecting this for awhile now, but "This is not a good use of our taxpayer dollars. This is not the change people want in the world. This is not the change people voted for."

More info will be posted as we get it."

and...

From the Long Beach Press-Telegram on 10/10/2012.

"LONG BEACH — The Long Beach Police Department and the federal Drug Enforcement Agency raided seven medical marijuana dispensary sites Wednesday afternoon, making more than 40 arrests, according to police.

The raid at about 1 p.m. targeted two locations that were being used to grow marijuana and two that had been identified by the Fire Department as uninhabitable, police said.

Police didn't provide further details.

Medical marijuana patient Daniel Palafox said he was at the Long Beach Green Room medical marijuana collective, located at Seventh Street and Rose Avenue, when it was raided. He said he saw police officers arrive with riot shields and a battering ram, though they didn't use it.

The 54-year-old, who said he uses medical marijuana for back pain and the effects of past injuries such as a broken leg and torn ligaments, said he was detained with the dispensary employees for 30 to 40 minutes before he was let go."

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

You would think with so many more important things going on the Federales would have other things to look into. I have to wonder... are they getting a cut of the cartel money??? And then I think Indeed they are. The bigger the cartels, the bigger the DEA budget, the bigger the cartels... It's a perfect setup! Kinda like the military!

And with raiding the store-front pot dispensories, get press for fighting drugs, butyou don't have to worry about getting shot or being put on a drug cartel hit list.

Almost seems like the DOJ suckered the states and medical marijuana growers and retailers - telling them that the Feds wouldn't prosecute - and after they had set up a state-approved distribution network, swooped in to make arrests.

Now even the FDA can't get government-grown pot to do studies with.

I agree with both of you; hasn't that been pretty much the impetus from the start? That and politics. Otherwise, why wouldn't the losing battle of the "war on drugs" have gotten through to them long ago? Throwing good money after bad, when it's done nothing to seriously stem the "problem"... And marijuana is the easiest to go after; plus it's convenient for pushing the anti-immigrant agenda and ginning up fear. As they always say, "follow the money"...

It's about money. DEA and prison contractors all profit from it. Lawyers profit too, albeit on a smaller scale. There's no political will to defuse the situation.

Ach, I forgot the for-profit prisons...they may well be #1 who benefit. I repeat:

Too bad Pres. Obama can't take Atty General Holder aside and suggest that he quit hassling the state-authorized dispenseries, like the DOJ seemed to promise back in 2009. Wonder why he's less supportive now than he was when running for office. Could it have anything to do with concern over the states having too many rights?
